Terkel to appear on Olbermann tonight to talk about the O’Reilly harassment machine.
Tonight, ThinkProgress’s Amanda Terkel will be on MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann to talk about her ambush by the Bill O’Reilly harassment machine. For four straight nights, “Olbermann awarded O’Reilly gold, silver and bronze as ‘Worst Person in the World’…for his insistence on speaking at the [Alexa] Foundation’s luncheon.” The show is pushed back tonight due to President Obama’s press conference, so she will be on at approximately 9:50 p.m. ET.
Terkel will also be on The Young Turks this evening at 7:45 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune in.

What Fox did is no different than what 60 Minutes has been doing for a long time. I use 60 Minutes because they have been around a long time. So most of you in here claim Amanda was stalked by Fox News. What has CBS and 60 Minutes been doing for the last forty years? “Stalking”, who the story is about when they don’t want to be interviewed? Do they “ambush” people outside their homes and businesses when they don’t want to be interviewed? How many times have you seen a reporter and cameraman chasing someone down the street shoving a mic in their face as the “victim” repeats over and over, “No comment”. What Fox did is no different than what 60 Minutes has been doing for a long time. I use 60 Minutes because they have been around a long time. CNN, ABC, and NBC have been doing it for a long time as well. I hear the New York Times perfected the stalk and ambush technique.

Nobody is arguing that journalism can get a bit aggressive at times, and it’s not just Fox News. I can recall a number of instances where the unwanted mic in the face technique was used. However, I can’t think of ONE instance where the target wasn’t a recently convicted criminal, someone under investigation for a crime, someone recently arrested/indicted, or somebody in the middle of a scandal. In other words, people who no doubt refused to answer questions in less confrontational circumstances.
60 Minutes (and other news shows) generally contact their sources by telephone or e-mail for comments, resorting to more aggressive confrontation if they can’t get a response any other way (and they’re usually in the company of other news media doing the same). Picking up the phone is cheaper, it’s quicker, and it generally brings better results — if the result you want is information. If, however, the result you want is to get some dramatic footage and make somebody look as bad as possible, then you skip the phone calls and go stake out their apartment, follow them out of town, and attempt to catch them when they are least prepared to respond to you about specifics from a couple months ago (like when they’re on vacation). Then you edit the footage to get the result you want.
Face it — O’Reilly is basically beating Amanda up and telling lies about her just because it makes good television for him. I don’t recall 60 Minutes or anybody else going after a blogger in this manner. But if you have a specific instance of this, by all means — share it with us.

No, I didn’t send any e-mails to Alexa regarding her choice of speaker or regarding anything else. However, if I had, I would have been polite about it and I never would have attacked her personally (or been “not nice” in any other way).
Rudeness has no place here (or most anywhere else for that matter), and I’m sorry if Alexa was on the receiving end of some.
But I found nothing in Amanda’s original post that came even close to inciting anyone to fire off rude e-mails to Alexa. Geez — all Amanda did was post an item that said basically two things: 1) that Bill O’Reilly was scheduled to speak at a fundraiser for the Alexa Foundation, and 2) pointing out that O’Reilly had made controversial comments in the past about a rape/murder victim. At no point did Amanda say anything negative about Alexa, or the Alexa Foundation — much less suggest that people send any hate mail.
I’m sure that Alexa is doing all she can to help rape victims — certainly a worthy endeavor. And I’m sorry that “it happened” to her — rape is a horrible crime and nobody should ever be a victim of it. But does that mean nobody is allowed to say that her choice of speakers leaves something to be desired?

This was the only mention of the story on TP before Bill0 sent his goons out to try and force Amanda into some sort of confession. It didn’t call for any action from anyone. It didn’t attack the Foundation. ALL it did was point out a flaw in Bill0’s character. And that, according to Bill0, was Amanda’s great offense. She, among dozens of others, shed a little light on the darkness of Bill0’s soul.

March 24th, 2009 at 11:15 pmIf I had started a foundation for the parents of kids with autism—just an example—and I booked a fund-raising luncheon with a well-known speaker promoting his/her book (unrelated to autism) and then someone showed me proof that this author had claimed in the past that autism wasn’t real, it was just lazy parents looking for an excuse, blah, blah, blah—
then I think I’d put the integrity of the parents of kids with autism first and confront the book promoter. Whether or not anyone else does that, is their business. But I would certainly not be flattered if the author portrayed me, my organization, and the beneficiaries of my organization as victims because people wrote honestly about what the author said about autism. I would assume that most people who wrote to me to inform me of what he had said in the past were doing so out of concern.
