TAKE ACTION: Tell O’Reilly’s Advertisers To Stop Supporting The O’Reilly Harassment Machine

billo.jpgFox News host Bill O’Reilly employs producers charged with the specific mission of ambushing and harassing those who have said critical things about him. O’Reilly has not only stalked and accosted ThinkProgress deputy editor Amanda Terkel, but he has also targeted at least 40 other individuals in much the same way.

If O’Reilly wanted statements from his opponents, there are alternative, more responsible ways of eliciting responses. Amanda was never asked to appear on The O’Reilly Factor, nor did the show ever reach out to ThinkProgress for comment prior to their decision to stalk her.

This isn’t “journalism” — it’s a mafia-style harassment operation. It’s a campaign of intimidation and an unethical practice that amounts to an invasion of privacy. As Amanda said of her own altercation with O’Reilly’s crew: “It was incredibly disturbing. The rest of the weekend, I was constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering how long they had been following me, if they’re still following me.”

We need to shut down the O’Reilly Harassment Machine. And the best way to do that is to demand that O’Reilly’s corporate advertisers — those who are helping to fund this operation — issue a clear statement explaining their opposition to O’Reilly’s brand of “ambush journalism.”

Click here to tell O’Reilly’s advertisers to stop supporting the O’Reilly Harassment Machine.

Update AT&T has responded with this statement from spokesman Michael Coe:

AT&T continually evaluates our advertising efforts to make certain that we are reaching consumers in effective and meaningful ways. We also make every effort to ensure that the content of the programming on the stations and outlets on which we advertise is in keeping with our corporate values and philosophy.

No word on whether O'Reilly's Harassment Machine is "in keeping with" AT&T's "corporate values and philosophy."

Update Mr. Coe from AT&T called to complain about our automated email campaign, saying it is “harassment.” ThinkProgress noted that if he thinks receiving e-mails is harassment, he will surely think that stalking and accosting a person on vacation is outrageous. Hopefully, AT&T and the other advertisers will use their influence over O’Reilly to urge him to end his practice of “ambush journalism.”

OK its on now….speeking of NOW they need to stand up for and with these poor raped child of the right that have been abused by a Conservative upbringing and the one this Prevert is attempting to help, we also need to make sure OUR contributions to the charitable event EXCEED that of the Prevert. If the Prevert holds another event of the like we must show up at the event in greater numbers with greater contributions and blow him away, show him we can do even better at what he does. Its so much fun to beat these people at their own game. (I use the word “prevert” because of the closed court dox’s and I can’t prove the real word applies) but I know one when I see one!

  5. pete says:

There are two other tactics that would seem to be more effective. One that everyone can do and one that the victims of corporate media need to do on their own.

    1. As horrific as it may seem, cancel cable and tell your provider it’s because you refuse to support corporate news. I haven’t had cable in many years and seldom miss it. This would have the dual benefit of putting the pressure on cable news to provide a better service and cable providers offering ala carte service. If I could pay for only the stations I want, I would sign up in a heartbeat.

    2. His victims, and those targeted by other disgusting creeps in the media, need to start suing for slander.

  26. WAYNEBRO says:

A better way to stop Oreilly is to simply make sure if you’re writing about him that you carry some sort of video recording device with you at all times. A cell phone with a good built in video recorder is best.

Just have it with you and when his reporters show up, start filming.

Then, when you get to where you’re going, upload the recording of the ENTIRE ambush interview onto YouTube.

BEFORE Oreilly’s goons get to edit it, and show it.

That way he’s going to get tired of airing interviews that are already aired all over the internet, and in their entirety. Plus he’ll not be able to embellish or lie, because the video will be right there on Youtube, hours and even days before he ever gets to air it.

  27. McWars says:

Advisory to trolls: Stop bringing the word “journalist” into this. We’re talking about the tabloid, mush-brain news corps that has done wonders for your room temperature IQ. 32. Realness says:

Not just the intentions, but the results, watchdog. Lets get back to objective reality: it sure felt good for the republicans to have a free-for-all the last eight years in their corporate and military circle jerk, while everyone else are the bills. Hmmm, I seem to remember intentions being good post 9/11 for all of the lies and ensuing invasion. The only people who felt good are the upper class as they got richer.

Looks like the GOP is the winner for no impulse control. Please educate yourself. It’s sad to see a small cog like you trying to defend people who have no problem stealing from you, using you, and laughing all the way to the bank.

To be truthful AT&T was already on my list of companies to try and avoid, but its good to know that AT&T supports someone who blames rape on the victim.

  48. pete says:

Personally, I’m a moderate. I’ve never joined a political party and have registered as an independent my whole life. Over the years I’ve probably voted for more Republicans than I have Democrats. And yet…

I’m proud to say that I see the rot in the GOP. It began, in my experience, when I saw Ron Reagan humping Fallwell’s leg. And it’s gone downhill from there.

Do I hate Republicans? No. However, I do hate those who have contributed to the downfall of our country. I hate those who went to war with the wrong effing country. I hate those who have raped our economy. I hate those who use petty personal differences for political gain. And I really, really, hate morons who can’t see the damage that neoconsrvatism has done to our economy, innocent people, and our standing among civilized nations.

I spent 40 years convinced that our government didn’t order the torture of prisoners. I spent 40 years convinced that our government didn’t hold people in secret, indefinitely, and without trial or hope of acquittal. I spent 40 years convinced that we, as a nation, had the right to condemn others for their abuse of human rights.

All that has been pissed away. Your damn right I hate what’s been done to our country and those who perpetrated crimes in my name. I hate those who turned the U.S.A. into a rogue nation and I’ll never again be culpable in my silence.

  49. wags says:

Why can u all have a good discussion w/o getting personal and spewing your dislike for the opposing view.

If you want a good discussion, you have to hold up your side of it.

  50. McWars says:

Speaking of “playing the victim,” Fixed News actually posted a letter from an AIG honcho in which he claimed he had nothing to do with the credit defaults, and the talking heads treated it as a sob story and “support” that Wall Street is being unfairly victimized.

  53. Realness says:

Dogfight…if you can hold one thing in that atrophied brain of yours, you’d understand by now that there’s a great deal of criticism on here of the Democratic Party, to push it towards more liberal/progregissive/leftward/etc. In your black and white child mind, you actually think that you can dismiss the Democratic party for a few statements you heard from some AM radio station? school bell’s ringing…

  54. wags says:

With a name like Dogfight you seem to come ready for ‘attacks’. We had 8 years of opposing view ruling the land and the results are incredibly damning for those rulers. Yet we have Republicans calling the current government fascists and calling for impeachment of President Obama all the while forgetting how Republicans called any criticism of Bush anti American. It strikes me as incredible how many people are blind to this hypocrisy. Bill O’Reilly is but one cheerleader for this kind of hypocrisy. Here we have Dogfight complaining of attacks and name calling. Bill has been calling Democrats and Liberals and Progressives all kinds of names for years. Me too. I find it frustrating in the extreme to have my time ruled by the idiot box. Even if I decide to watch something informative on PBS I generally find myself online checking related sources and confirming, or refuting, their information.

your company supports and sponsors a program on the fox “news” network called “the o’reilly factor”. this program has waged a campaign of stalking and harassment against individuals (many private citizens) who have had the temerity to disagree with it’s host on his controversial opinions. “tof” then takes the video tape of these attacks, edits them to suit it’s purposes and plays them on their program. (the latest victim of this pogrom is amanda terkel. i hope you will take the time to read here story here.) this is a gross misuse of the public airwaves in order to support a partisan, right-wing political agenda. no responsible corporate citizen would sponsor such terror tactics. unfortunately at&t does. because of this i will boycott at&t’s products and services. i will not allow a penny of my money to go your company until “the o’reilly factor” stops these tactics or at&t withdraws it’s corporate sponsorship of. i hope you will pay close attention to this situation and do what is necessary to remedy it. at&t’s success as a company depends on the patronage of an american public that believes in fair play and the right’s of the individual against the will of the powerful. remember that these individuals, grouped together, represent a majority of your customers. please don’t risk losing them and jeopardizing at&t’s future success for something at&t must surely know is fundamentally wrong. i respectfully ask that you to have the courage to stand up and do the right thing.

    Gee Watchdog #116

What the F* does the Bracero program have to do with Reagan passing the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986?

It does have one thing in common. Rich land owners wanted cheap labor to harvest their crops. They wanted to exploit the workers and drive down wages. Sounds a little republican doesn’t it?

  86. misshusseinmolly says:

Mr. Coe from AT&T called to complain about our email campaign, saying it is “harassment.”
    __________________________________________________________

If Mr. Coe plans to continue to support such an inflammatory and divisive person, he can expect this sort of thing.

I remember once upon a time when Ann Coulter was more offensive than usual (which says a lot), and advertisers on her website were targeted as a result by people who were fed up. Many of them advertised through a service that chose websites with the volume and the demographic they wanted, and they had no idea they were advertising on Coulter. Many of them took action to ensure they no longer would.

Mr. Coe (is he an actual decision maker or just a mouthpiece?) or his AT&T people can now decide if Bill O’Reilly represents their “corporate values and philosophy” or they can decide they will not spend their advertising dollars there. It’s a free country and they have a choice.

Oh, and another thing — Mr. Coe should be happy he’s just getting e-mails. His customers COULD be switching to Verizon in droves. Which scenario would he rather have?

  87. Hoodathunk says:

    as for this gem:
Your absolutely right! No one but a liberal can justify getting out of a debt problem by going deeper into debt.

your stupidity shines bright, as there’s a helluva lot more wrong than just a ‘debt problem.’ i don’t want to burden you’re simplistic mind, but there’s de-regulation, illegal wars, lobbying… the list goes on and on. instead of just smearing your stupid over a thread, you should actually read something. You can start with the spending we did that helped to get us out of the Depression, and the backslide prolonging action when FDR decided to balance the budget too soon. Start there, please.

  91. Hoodathunk says:

AT&T continually evaluates our advertising efforts to make certain that we are reaching consumers in effective and meaningful ways. We also make every effort to ensure that the content of the programming on the stations and outlets on which we advertise is in keeping with our corporate values and philosophy.

That’s all you got? My definition of ignorant different than Webster’s? You must not read your fellow troll dropping. Not much of a watchdog. I have seen the policies of the Republicans. I have seen the ideology of the Republican. If I disagree with them then I am closed minded? Seem like if those policies did well and the ideology was less centered on personal choices then I might be closed minded not to agree with them. If, on the other hand, the policies were a failure and ideology leads me to call homosexuals perverts and put the blame on rape victims, then I would be open minded to see the problems with those policies and ideology.

Tell me, why won’t the right put up their their ideas? Because even they would have to admit upon being pressed that their is more to it than meets the eye. President Obama is attempting to transform the budget process to something we can relate to away from the abstract.

Just what is your plan to cover the debt? That’s right, your party can’t admit it without being thrown deeper into irrelevance — you want to make the population suffer just to make a little progress on the balance sheets, while we want to invest in shoring up indicators of wellness and shore up the balance sheets in the long term and in full.

See, that isn’t so black and white, is it?

You don’t think maybe some of that “rot” showed itself during, oh…lets say the Nixon years?

Yer damn right illegal wars helped get us here. Are you saying that all of the billions (trillions?) Bush put in as “emergency funds” didn’t contribute to our problems?

and lobbying by banks and corporations to further deregulate the market has and is one of the central problems of our corrupt economic system.

the debt created is a symptom- among MANY – of this corrupt system. Unemployment, falling consumer confidence, depreciated housing market, etc- A symptom of an illness. I’m not sure if you’re brain has progressed enough to grasp analogy, but I thought I’d try anyway.

  117. Tweedster says:

    watchdog:

Illegal Wars and lobbying got us here? Not the housing bubble created by our socialist mortgage system? And
loans that got bundled into marketable securities? sounds kinda like a debt problem does it not?

If you don’t realize that illegal wars cost a LOT OF MONEY, and that lobbyists lobby for GOVERNMENT FUNDED SUBSIDIES, then no, you don’t fully understand the scope of the problem. And if you don’t realize that by stopping all spending does NOTHING to create jobs and get people back to work, then you don’t fully understand the problem. If you think cutting taxes for those who are making more money than they need and believe that this will ease the deficit, then you don’t fully understand the problem. I could go on, but you are a boring a-hole.

  118. tizzdogg says:

While I think O’Reilly’s harassment “journalism” is terrible, I feel like he started doing it as a reaction to what the right perceives to be Michael Moore’s tactics, which always get them up in arms. They can always point to Farenheit 911 or whatever and say “see the crazy left does it too!” to justify these stunts.

I think there’s something worse about the way O’Reilly does it, but I can’t quite put my finger on what the difference is. Can anyone help out here?
Perhaps it’s because Moore does it in the context of more serious investigative journalism, and uses the street confrontation just to add a bit of humor to his movies. But I think O’Reilly would say they do it for the humor value too (even if it’s more mean-spirited). Perhaps the difference is just that O’Reilly is not very funny?

  119. pete says:

I might add, WAYNEBRO, that I was raised to believe that “conservative” meant cautious, thoughtful, and unwilling to mess with success. I still think that’s a pretty good approach to life. And it took me a while to realize that the neocons are reckless, greedy, radicals who don’t have a truly conservative ideal to share between them.

  120. McWars says:

WOW, “socialist mortgage system.” Private companies in their innovative streak come out with pick-a-payment-no-interest loans and the private brokers say “Sign on the dotted line, nothing to worry about!” and a year or two later the monthly payments skyrocket.

    You call that socialism?

Clearly, we’re talking the largest failed business decision in American history, and overinflated home values drove people with stagnant incomes to exotic loans, because traditional fixed-rate loans were becoming out of their reach when you put 2 and 2 together. Did gluttony exist? Certainly, but scope of these defaults disprove the notion that bad decision-making on behalf of consumers caused the crisis — but it makes for an easy talking point to avoid the dirty work & analysis for you right-wingers!

Also, it doesn’t help that the chair of the public-private organization, or the Federal Reserve, endorsed these “innovative” loans.

Black-and-white doesn’t work very well, trolls.

Of course, if your dad is part of this management, take him out to the woodshed and talk to him by hand. He will thank you for it someday.

  176. Ojore says:

Added my name to the letter campaign. To think I almost switched to AT&T a few weeks back. Yikes.

  177. klittle32 says:

PERSONALIZE YOUR EMAIL! It makes a big difference.

This is something I have learned and strongly encourage everyone else to do as well. Even the subject line of your email- personalize it so that the recipient actually takes a moment to look at your email (before they likely dismiss it). The more time you can get these people to spend with their eyes upon your words, the better.

These email campaigns really can produce results, folks. Keep it up and spread the word!

  178. Hesperion says:

Ahh, Boohoohoo…AT&T is complaining about being “harrassed” by people (they were probably eavesdropping on for Bush) who are sick and tired of their corporate Mouth O’Loudly bullying anyone that he doesn’t like using his employer’s money. What would they do without him? He IS the fascist, rascist, corporate megaphone after all. Sorry if their continued support of him is inconveniencing AT&T’s flab-assed corporate officers. Finding out that these things come back around IS painful huh?

  179. khamak says:

Capital One has blocked the antiOReilly emails: This is what I got back.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

  180. Inferno Silver says:

It will be my pleasure to support this initiative completely. Glad I’ve been away from AT&T for a good couple years now.

  181. Obamatonidiot says:

If you hate Bill O and Fox so much stop watching!!! It is the only non socialist supporting news network out there. Go jerk off to CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, ABC,CBS NBC, or better yet get all of your facts from John Stewart. If you don’t have a television then go read the New York Times, LA Times, San Fran Chronicle, Chicago Tribune or just about any other print media. All you people are so wound around the axle about anyone who might disagree with you you will demonize them. You left wingnuts don’t have a problem screaming our opposing views but cant stand it if anyone voices theirs if you dont like it. If you think O’Reilly, and everyone else at fox is so full of BS and you believe that everyone knows that then what are you worried about?

  182. dbl.r says:

AT&T is my land line carrier, and if Mr. Coe thinks that my E-Mail is harrassment, then I guess my continued monthly payments are harrassment also. I guess Mr. Coe would rather that I change to another carrier….
If that is the case, then all he has to do is inform me of that fact and I`ll be more than happy to oblige him…..
Bill-O`, has had his producers stalk judges also, which I find very disturbing….

  183. peterocks42 says:

Wahhh wahhh, Listen to the Liberals cry! Get over it loons, and that dumb airhead Amanda needs to go and get a man,she might shut-up for awhile! Geuss you whiney liberals are scared because FOX blows you Jokesters away in the ratings. You wanna censor somebody make it Oberjerk! I have NEVER seena more TOXIC VILE LIE SPEWING piece of S**T in my life. F**K MSNBC,and all the trash that works there. Have a nice day, losers…

  184. jmk says:

AT&T’s Mr. Coe should be scolded for his nonsensical characterization of this email campain ad “harassment.”

I googled “Michael Coe AT&T” and his email address popped right up: mcoe@attnews.us

It would be harassement if someone were to wait outside his office to follow him in his car, then stick a microphone in his face for “comment.” Oh, wait, the FIRST time is “journalism” – it’s the SECOND time that makes it harassment.
