Yesterday, MoveOn.org, Americans United for Change, and several other progressive groups began running ads urging “moderate” Democratic members of Congress to “get on board with the president’s budget.” The ads are, in part, a response to Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) and 14 of his Democratic colleagues who are creating what they call a “moderate coalition that will meet regularly to shape public policy.” Bayh responded to the new ads late yesterday, telling Politico that his group of “moderates” should not be targeted because they have “no agenda”:
Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) is also unhappy with the friendly fire. Bayh…found himself targeted by an ad accusing him of “standing in the way of President Obama’s reforms.” “We literally have no agenda,” Bayh shot back. “How can they be threatened by a group that has taken no policy positions?”
Bayh’s claim that his group has no agenda is hard to believe. Indeed, as the Wall Street Journal explained yesterday, the group’s “stated goal is to…protect business interests.” Even before the group was officially formed, their efforts dampened a number of progressive policy proposals and they clearly have aspirations to expand their portfolio:
– Shrinking Economic Recovery: The group’s first significant “success” was “paring down the more than $900 billion economic stimulus bill to $787 billion,” reducing the government’s ability to spur economic recovery quickly. [Roll Call, 3/12/2009]
– Preserving The Bush Tax Cuts: Regarding Obama’s plan to allow the Bush tax cuts to expire, Bayh said, “I do think that before we raise revenue, we first should look to see if there are ways we can cut back on spending.” [Politico, 3/3/2009]
– Delaying Cap-and-Trade: Bayh coaltion member, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), explained that the group might “push for a more lenient phase-in period for a cap-and-trade system and revenue-raising offsets to pay for expensive mandates.” [CQ Politics, 3/9/2009]
– Weakening Bankruptcy Protection: Centrist Democrats “forced changes to a House bill that would allow bankruptcy judges to modify mortgages, ensuring that the legislation better reflected the concerns of the financial-services industry.” [WSJ, 3/25/09]
If Bayh is to be believed and his new group of moderates “literally have no agenda,” then what exactly are they doing? As MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow explained last night, it appears that Bayh and his colleagues have found at least one niche to fill by helping Republicans obstruct the President’s agenda and deny voters the policies they endorsed last November:
Anyone voting against a Democratic agenda voted Republican. Those votes produced a very small Republican minority in Congress. A small minority that now has way more power than they otherwise would because of conservative Democrats deciding to give Republicans as much power as they can.
Watch it:
DINOS = Rethugs in brown shirts & jackboots. The party of NO, No, NO!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:07 pmThe “I hope Obama fails” clique.
Thank God for Bayh!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:09 pmBlue Dogs…this is not what you were sent to congress for; but it may well be what you are sent home for….
March 26th, 2009 at 1:10 pmWhat is the point of forming a group if it has no agenda?
And isnt it Bayhs job, as an elected servant, to represent his constituents, that is, to represent their opinions rather than him try to form their opinion to his?
March 26th, 2009 at 1:11 pm.
Bu-Bayh Evan.
.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:12 pmto represent his constituents,
That’s exactly what he’s doing.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:12 pmBayh was elected to help change the unelected centrist click in DC not to protect it.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pmCSH Says: to represent his constituents, That’s exactly what he’s doing.
So why does he need to change public policy if he is already, supposedly, representing his constituents?
March 26th, 2009 at 1:14 pmThis “coalition” needs to know Progressives, Liberal Democrats and Independents will point them out during 2010 and 2012.
Any Republican disguised as a “Democrat” needs to be booted out of office!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:14 pm“We literally have no agenda,” Bayh shot back.
Doncha just love moderates?
March 26th, 2009 at 1:19 pmHey yall, Im forming a group with no agenda whatsoever, just come on down and we will discuss protecting business and changing the public policy into a business policy and this is not an agenda, no sir. Its just public goodness. Good for the public. BTW Non-business folks are not invited to attend this public policy meeting. Cause you know, its about [wink wink] public policy.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:19 pmDoncha just love moderates?
I’ve seen several posters here claim to be moderates. What are you claiming to be?
March 26th, 2009 at 1:20 pmThis guy Bayh, I’ve always said that I’d rather watch paint dry than to have to listen to this clown speak.

March 26th, 2009 at 1:21 pmThen, by definition, you don’t need to organize.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:22 pmtoss them out of the party. let them be independents or repuglicans
March 26th, 2009 at 1:23 pmYou’re absolutely right, CSH… thank god Bayh has the courage to stand up for the poor downtrodden businesses…
if they didn’t have Bayh’s coalition then they’d only have every media outlet and every Republican on their side… horrors!

March 26th, 2009 at 1:30 pmThis is just a power grab. They want to be the gateway that Obama needs to pass legislation so that when it’s passed they can be on camera when Obama talks about it. People need to call them and let them know this is bullshit.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:30 pmI am completely un-Bayh-assed in my disgust for this ridiculous behavior. They could all run down the street naked and do more good for the country.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:30 pmThese so-called Blue Dogs seem to think they have something to gain by portraying themselves as fiscally conservative. (I also think they like being called ‘Blue Dogs’ quite frankly.)
Thing is, to vote with the Rs they’d be siding with those that supported massive spending under the Bush administration. Not much of that spending trickled to us.
For the good of the country I hope they figure out a way to present Obama’s plan to their constituents in a positive way. The spending in the plan may seem counter-intuitive, but, of course the idea is that it’s an investment in the future, with benefits ultimately exceeding the costs.

to represent his constituents,
That’s exactly what he’s doing
I don’t give a rat’s ass if he represents the KKK or whatever. The point here is that all throughout the Country people voted for those who “represented” themselves as Democrats. If he went to Washington to look out for “business interests” then he is a liar and should be called out for it. Corporations have had eight years to plunder the country.
We need representation not “misrepresentation”
March 26th, 2009 at 1:32 pmWould love to see a list of lobbyists influencing ( buying) senators voting against the American people.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pmSo who is Bayh and his “blue dog” turncoats really working for? The people or business interests? They need to get on board or get out of the way.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:38 pmby his own admission bayh is just a meaningless road block.
he should quit picking up his paycheck if he has no agenda or policy positions. thats not what the country needs right now. either come up with some ideas or get out of the way.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:38 pmCSH, this site is definitely not moderate. It’s a mixture of liberalism, progressivism, and a lot of just plain ol’ left thinking. There’s been a lot of debate here about the Blue Dogs- sometimes in defense- because of their barely blue constituency, but mainly criticism, because TP is largely not moderate.
I think there can be a lot of activism by the rest of the country to really show displeasure at this “moderate” stand that really amounts to obstructionism. To show that this is not time to be “moderate,” but active in repairing this country. Those constituencies aren’t in a bubble, and maybe they will see that their representatives are doing more harm than good.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:40 pmEvan Byah is like Paul Krugman. Two bitter men who were passed over by Obama so now they are in vendetta mode. How sad.

BAYH: Calling to order the first meeting of the Moderate Caucus.

BAYH: Well. we have no agenda.
FRESHMAN SENATOR: Oh. What policy positions do we want to put forward?
BAYH: What, are you some kinda troublemaker or something? Look buddy, our goal is to be a big inert lump in the middle of the road. If you want to do stuff, go talk to Bernie Sanders or Russ Feingold and leave us alone!
March 26th, 2009 at 1:43 pmIf poor Evan just wanted to be in charge of something no matter how useless couldn’t they have made him president of the senate latin club or something? Oh well, at least now we will have a roster so we know who needs a primary challenge next time up.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:44 pm” . . .the group’s “stated goal is to…protect business interests.” ”

March 26th, 2009 at 1:44 pmThis is a bit of an aside: I heard a story the other day about the night of the Indiana primary. The Clintons were hold up with Bayh waiting on the results. It was close and Hillary and Bill wanted details. Bayh, being the well connected politico he is, opened up the CNN.com election page and began hitting refresh. Apparently he didn’t have troops on the ground feeding him info. The Clintons flew into a rage.
The point? Well, I think we generally give Bayh a bit too much credit for being a sharp up and comer. He has survived off his name and little else. And now he’s getting his name out there by being the voice of opposition to his own party’s very popular president.

March 26th, 2009 at 1:48 pmFor just once, I would like Democrats to stop F**king things up. Here we have a majority, and these jerks blow it everytime. I hope the people in their districts let them have it. I tired of this sh*t.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:50 pmCSH Says:

And you know this how? Indiana voted for President Obama and Bayh was a supporter of Obama at that time and he won too.
How Bayh is acting today is much different than he acted when he was running for re-election. Had the people in IN known that he would come in and become one of Obama’s biggest opponents (probably because he’s mad he didn’t get picked as VP), I wonder how the people would have voted.

http://www.sunstateactivist.org/ssablog/
March 26th, 2009 at 1:53 pmBayh is being disingenuous when he says they have no agenda when it has been clearly stated.
Bayh is among those DINOs who remain in the party but keep one foot squarely planted in the repugnican camp — not unlike Joe Liebernam who started out as a DINO.
I expected the usual suspects in the group, but I am surprised at a few of them whose states have suffered so much under the Repugniscum rule that I would have thought they would never align themselves with the repugs again.
It’s one thing to want to work with your colleagues from the other side in a bipartisan effort for the greater good, but when the other side has repeatedly and determinedly shown that it does not want to work with you – and in fact will deliberately work against you – why do you want to be like them? Democrats have a chance to make real changes, good for all Americans, but Bayh and company are not advancing that agenda.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:55 pmDems like Bayh enable the right-wing to fester and spread as much disinformation as they have; suffocating intelligent debate and policy in this country.
Thankfully, people are getting hip to the game, even if they don’t fully comprehend the whole game itself.

Conservadem Evan Byah….what’s up with your wife serving on all those BigPharma boards? Conflict of interest? HMMMMMMMMM. The fair-haired darling of the Conservadems, Evan Bayh’s wife Susan sits on so many boards it is amazing that he doesn’t have to recuse himself from ninety percent of the legislation that he tries to read all by himself:

That’s 40% of the whole Dim caucus which must be regarded as unreliable, on ANY vote…
Forty Fuukin Per Cent of the Dim caucus cannot be counted on to vote with the Dim party?
Is it ANY wonder that people don’t see a hill of beans worth of difference between the Dims and the Pukes???
March 26th, 2009 at 2:18 pmThis Coalition of the Shilling may accomplish the same slowdown in economic recovery that the Republicans and DINO’s can lay credit to during the recovery from the Great Depression. FDR’s caving to the demands to slow spending made recovery efforts take years longer than it should have. The Dems in Bayh’s little corporate circle jerk may have won their elections due to big money donations and having a “D” next to their names but that will NOT be enough to keep their jobs. True, the money is a huge asset during an election cycle, but in order to make it through the primaries you need to show Democratic voters exactly what you have done in their name. This is a time to do what is good for Americans, the corporations have made their wealth off of our backs for long enough. Protecting corporate interests over the needs of struggling families will NOT help their re-election hopes. This idiot’s moderate bullshit ain’t gonna fly with the American people. They voted for change and expect it, not Repub tactics, roadblocks and secret meetings.

whereupon the Pukes revealed their (and his) true colors, returning him to the Senate with a narrow majority…
The Dims should have cut Loserman off at the knees: shut his office, fired his staff, moved his desk to a latrine in the Senate garage…
March 26th, 2009 at 2:23 pmTheir agenda is to garner more personal power. After watching the Dems kissing up Snowe & Specter, they realized that just by being obstructive they, too, could be powerful and get lots of TV time, and money from Repbulican Lobbiests’.

March 26th, 2009 at 3:21 pmI’m not quite sure what Bayh means by the interest of “businesses.”
Every day of the week I go to work and try to figure out how to convince Vendor-1 to wait on getting paid while the businesses I work for pay Vendor-2.
republican policies have destroyed the unionized American industrial base, that created the American middle class, that IS/was the great American consumer society. That is gone, though the memory and habits still linger.
As for the businesses I work for? It’s a toss-up as to how long they will remain open without foot-traffic walking into the showroom and plunking down some cash for the stuff they sell.
March 26th, 2009 at 4:43 pmOf course Bayh has an agenda. He just can’t publicly announce it because it is such an obvious conflict of interest. Any reform of the health care system will cut into his wife’s rather large income since she sits on the boards of 5 health care companies and receives dividends or stock from 2 additional health care companies.
March 26th, 2009 at 4:44 pmThis reminds me of Groucho Marx’s singing the political song,
“If They’re for it, I’m Against It!”
I can’t recall the particular movie, but it’s the one where the Marx’s Brothers are liberating the country of “Freedonia”. Groucho is against some political “upstarts” so he starts a war. There were lots of great songs in the movie like, “We Got Guns, They Got Guns, All God’s Children Got Guns”,and, “To War, To War”.
Maybe this blue dog group is just some sort of comic relief…
March 26th, 2009 at 5:48 pmThe movie was “Duck Soup” and you can see it on youtube.
March 26th, 2009 at 6:16 pmPart 8, the first 2-3 minutes, is the stage production of “All God’s Chillen’s Got Guns” musical. Actually, it’s more relevant to the prior administrations as the plot is all about “Freedonia’s mismanagement by the prior administration, plus, the country is broke so who is going to bail them out?
These bluedogs dogs are no better than lieberman. Damn if they don’t lie like a repug.
It’s time to kick out so-called dems out of office.
And we won’t forget either.
March 26th, 2009 at 6:45 pmBayh: “We literally have no agenda.”
Then why the hell bother?
March 26th, 2009 at 6:54 pmPlease don’t forget the Republican agenda of keeping Al Franken out of the Senate Building as long as possible so that they can continue to prevent President Obama from rescuing America from the crimes of George “The Torturer” Bush and his Republican henchmen.
March 26th, 2009 at 7:59 pmBayh is starting to sound KKKonish, “we have no agenda”??!?!!?!?
Then why do you even have a group, what is their purpose!?!?!
You’ve got to be kidding me, this guy is lookin goofier and goofier daily
March 26th, 2009 at 9:11 pmI know the Blue Dogs agenda: NO MORE GOVERNMENT DEBT. Enough. Is Obama trying to bury the country in debt? Mark my words, if this nutty debt laden budget is passed, we are going to see hyperinflation that will make the past 6 months of economic mess seem like a vacation. Does anyone understand economics?
March 26th, 2009 at 9:14 pmTime for the shocker collar to be put on the blue dogs, and if they don’t respond it’s time for them to be called home and put in the kennel never to run again.

No, as a resident of Indiana I take exception to your flawed statement. He is not representing the citizens, he is working for the corporate interests that have squeezed all the money they can from this state.
Nobody thought we would elect Obama, but we did. Some think we will not get rid of Bayh. We will remember his words and deeds at election time. He was elected by the people and we can send Evan to the unemployment line if this stupidity continues.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:22 pmAnd to think – I once thought Bayh had some potential to be a leader.

I think that Representatives and Senators should have to wear the logos of their largest ten political contributors on the front of their suit jackets. Just like the drivers in Nascar do for their sponsors. That way, when they step up to derail useful legislation, the voters could draw the proper conclusions as to their REAL loyalties and motives.
March 27th, 2009 at 2:13 amI want to encourage all democrats to remember that blue dogs are also part of this big tent and that most of the time, the run with the stream. Not only that, being a democrat means accepting differences within the party. Otherwise, we would be no better than the republicans.
Think about it.
And don’t forget that Evan Bayh has won landslides in a very, very red state and his support of Obama, half-hearted though it was, did indeed help to put our man Obama over the top in the Hoosier state.
Obama has succeeded in building the most diverse and most powerful democratic coalition since FDR. If we want to keep it, then the last thing we need is infighting or the urge to purge.
Think about it.
March 27th, 2009 at 5:48 amAnd just what is a “moderate” some one who can’t decide which country he/she wants to survive in this economical meltdown that the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley (all Republicans) Bill has caused..with the help of several of your so-called “moderate” blue-dog Democrats..you like that..? give it all to Wall Street, no regulations, no questions asked..we (the people, the drones) pick up a few crumbs (when they fall) and then pay for the party out of our crumbs… you think the second world war was why we recovered from the first depression…tell me how does that work..because war is all about spending…building..tanks, airplanes, ships..employment (right here in the good old USA) Is that your plan, another world war to solve our economic woes..or are you in denial? “Spending” on defense contracts is okay?..we don’t even make steel here any more..you think China or Russia will let us purchase the weapons they make (or the steel, so we can make weapons ourselves?) to fight a war with them…? you booger eating moron!
March 27th, 2009 at 1:44 pmThe GOP wing of the Democratic Party cannot be trusted. It helped enable almost 30 years of Reaganomics, which corrupted and bankrupted America.
Bearing in mind that the best humor is based in truth, here’s an accounting joke that explains everything:
The GOP’s balance sheet for America has two sides, with liabilities on the left, and assets on the right. The problem is that on the left, there’s nothing right, while on the right, there’s nothing left.
As they say in Iraq, the GOP and these Blue Dogs still don’t know “Shiite from Shinola.”
My progressive views appear in “The Bush League of Nations: The Coalition of the Unwilling, the Bullied and the Bribed – the GOP’s War on Iraq and America,” by James A. Swanson (2008, CreateSpace Publishing, 448 pages).
You can now download for FREE the entire $25.95 book at http://www.bushleagueofnations.com.
I ask for nothing in return, except that you consider using my book as a resource to help restore and build America. Perhaps, if you are so inclined, you will also pass along the good word. I’d appreciate that.
