Last night on Fox News, host Sean Hannity and Newt Gingrich got together to discuss the Obama administration’s new financial system oversight and regulation plan. Naturally, Hannity was particularly outraged, bringing out his tired old trope that it “moves America down the road to socialism.”
Hannity then asked Gingrich to “explain” to his audience “how dangerous this power grab is.” Instead of using the standard, well worn-out and relatively benign “socialism” charge, this time, Gingrich raised the stakes and painted the plan in particularly frightening terms — “dictatorship“:
GINGRICH: We are seeing the biggest power grab by politicians in American history. The idea that they would propose that the treasury could intervene and take over non-bank, non-financial system assets gives them the potential to basically create the equivalent of a dictatorship. [...] Look, it absolutely moves it towards a political dictatorship.
Watch it:
Scary. However, the plan’s actual goal is to “restore faith in the financial system” and institute new regulations to ensure the “healthy function of financial markets and the steady flow of money to borrowers” — not create a dictatorship.
Moreover, don’t be afraid when Gingrich says the plan calls for the government to “intervene and take over non-banks” and “non-financial assets.” This doesn’t mean your local grocery store. This aspect of the plan is actually referring to AIG, which is technically a “non-bank” because it sells insurance. Yet lack of regulation of AIG’s derivatives and credit default swaps trading is a major cause of the current financial crisis and something Obama’s plan will address.
As has been demonstrated time and again, the right wing has nothing to offer but demonizing attacks on progressive policies. Seeing that Gingrich has escalated the game to “dictatorship,” what will be next?
Right Wing multiple choice question –
Obama’s budget means he is a:
A: Fascist
March 26th, 2009 at 11:03 amB: Socialist
C: Dictator
D: Teleprompter addict
Newt thinks all Americans are stupid and fearful enough to fall for his economic terrorism
too funny
March 26th, 2009 at 11:03 amFinancial Regualtion Plan Will Creat A “Dictatorship” Like The One George Bush Wanted.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:05 amShorter Gingrich: BOO!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:05 amNice one, Newton.
So now Obama’s moving us toward socialism, fascism AND dictatorship.
All at the same time.
Y’know… I’m beginning to think there’s an upside to this Faux News thing. Wingnuts go on there and feel perfectly comfortable to say anything they truly believe with no immediate consequences.
But we get a glimpse into what they REALLY believe.
And how ridiculous they’re capable of getting. If they were restricted to normal TV outlets where they had to speak guardedly about their ideas, we’d never get confirmation on how crazy they really are.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:06 amAnd the other sign of the Newt’s “dictator” coin is:
1. Greedership
2. Bleedership
3. Corporafornication
Someone needs to have the citizen’s back and Newt ain’t it. There is no parity between the public interest and the big money boys purchased influence.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:06 amI’m missing something.
They’re proposing something similar to the FDIC system (also started as a result of a very sour economy).
Banks love the FDIC (despite the resulting restrictions on their activity). Banks advertise FDIC as it makes their customers more likely to deal with them.
So does this mean Banks aren’t capitalist enterprises but rather are socialists ?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:09 am@ralph the wonder llama: yes we get to see what they really believe, spouting off non-sensical statements as if they were truths. but the really scary part? a lot of americans feel/believe the same things. just as non-sensically. just as unjustified and fraudulent. An aquantance of mine from high school asked me why I was an Obama supporter several months ago and said “Ain’t he a Commie?”. be very afriad.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:10 amOMG! My sides hurt from laughing! This is just unbelievable. How does Obama go from being a socialist to the far left, then to a fascist on the far right to a dictatorship? WOW – Newt really has nothing else constructive to say!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:10 amIs this the same guy who wanted a “permanant Republican Majority” ??? Isn’t that a form of dictatorship????
One thing is becoming very clear….all American idiots are grouped into one catigory….REPUBLICAN PARTY.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:12 amIs this moving toward “dictatorship” or actually restoring REGULATION, a much needed reform in the banking and financial industry.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:12 amThe Newtmeister disappointed me. He forgot to mentinon that President Obama is secretly the Anti-Christ. How Could he have left that Important Fact out?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:13 amMore lies and distortions from these wrong wing turds. Obama is doing the right thing for long term stability. Actually he’s not doing enough to bring about true progress for the non-rich, which is almost all of us. These hysterical mutterings from newt are laughable.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:14 amThey will stop at nothing to maintain the ill will that has us in this disorder to keep their pockets padded. The bottom line, call it what you will be it dictatorship, Nazism, authoritarianism, autocracy, coercion, despotism, fascism, garrison state, reign of terror, totalitarianism, tyranny, unlimited rule BUT KNOW THIS… greed, cruelty, harshness, hatred, indifference, meanness, mercilessness…WILL NEVER PREVAIL.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:14 amFor the past 8 years when we REALLY did have a dictactorship, the silence from Newt about that is deafening.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:14 amNEWTIE: Look, it absolutely moves it towards a political dictatorship.
Been there, done that.
Does the name George W. Bush ring a bell, Newtster?
Please run for president!! Please!?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:14 amSeeing that Gingrich has escalated the game to “dictatorship,” what will be next?
Something puerile and with religious overtones, no doubt…
March 26th, 2009 at 11:15 amJinx, Unka Ho! :-D
March 26th, 2009 at 11:15 amI think Gingrich must be one of those guys yelling loudly inside a tent that’s been pitched on the chess board landscape that Michael Steel was talking about.
Or not. Also.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:16 amThe fact that he referenced Pantloads screed disqualifies him to talk to anyone but the nitwit duo: Beck/Hannity. If Gingrich is the best and brightest of wingnuttery they are indeed doomed.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:17 amNewt just wanted to remind us all why the Republicans were replaced last November
March 26th, 2009 at 11:17 amIt must be good for America if these guys are hysterically scared of it. There’s a correlation there.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:20 amkonflikt Says: An aquantance of mine from high school asked me why I was an Obama supporter several months ago and said “Ain’t he a Commie?”. be very afriad.
I hate to stereotype, but I’ve noticed through Facebook, how many people who are either uneducated or came from uneducated families themselves and never out grew their cultural indoctrination (including my own relatives) really buy the crap they sell on televised news and never once stop to question it – even when it conflicts with reality. It’s why I am convinced that the Republicans worked hard to screw up the education system to make people hate learning, and thinking… Without rampant ignorance, they’d have gone extinct years ago.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:22 amYOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Gringrich talking about dictatorship? What utter balls! I need a drink!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:23 amHiya Zooey!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:23 am(:-D)
Lets face it, the Republicans have no options. There only answer to every problem is give the rich a tax break or start a war.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:25 amTheir only course of action is to try and make Obama look bad and hope they can keep the radical base appeased.
First of all, poor Newt continues to labor under the misapprehension that anyone (other than bobbleheads)is actually listening to him. His entire approach has become sadly irrelevant.
Secondly, someone should remind him that if our goal (after W) is to rebuild America, whipping up manaical hysteria is a bad way to start.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:26 amHey Newt….why don’t you watch this video from 1946 describing what to look for when trying to find fascist/dictator.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23X14HS4gLk
Once you have viewed this short 9 min movie done by the Government at the time….tell me who is the fascist party and the dictator?????
My friends…please pass this movie on…it will shock you becuase what you are to look out for …..is instilled into the REPUBLICAN PARTY OF TODAY!!! Watch it and tell me it’s not so.
PASS THIS MOVIE TO OTHER BLOG SITES!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:26 amNo Newt, the only way America could become a dictatorship would be if the GOP was still running the show.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:30 amThe local frootloop RW talk radio host (Brian Sussman on KSFO) yesterday was wailing and moaning about the Obama Plot To Put The Nation Under One World Currency [OMG! That's almost OWG, iddn't it?]. He said, “What’s next, ‘666′?”
They really are in serious need of neuroleptics.
I felt like calling him and explaining that if Obama really is the anti-Christ, there’s not a damn thing Sussman can do about it (or the coming Tribulation), so he might as well hope he’s raptured, and if not, just bend over and enjoy it. But I was driving at the time, and really had better things to do that assuage his fears….
Cheers,
March 26th, 2009 at 11:31 amRantingTommy Says:
Newt thinks all Americans are stupid and fearful enough to fall for his economic terrorism
not so funny that almost half of them ARE…
March 26th, 2009 at 11:32 amPeople called FDR much worse. IN retrospect, most notable historians say he SAVED capitalism, he didn’t destroy it. So too for Obama. If he DOESN’T do what he is trying to do, we are in for a world of hurt!@
March 26th, 2009 at 11:32 amSeeing that Gingrich has escalated the game to “dictatorship,” what will be next?
Well, the ultimate form of dictatorship is institutionalized slavery, and the only thing worse than that would be turning some slaves into food.
Now where have I seen that kind of thing before…..?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:34 amthese guys remind me of the witches in Macbeth — except they are never even remotely correct.
Isn’t there ever a reference to their track records at being right(other than in name)?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:36 amSo the regulatory proposal allows torturing of deceptive derivative traders and suspension of their right to habeus corpus, while tapping every wired, wireless and other communications in violation of the first, fourth and fourteenth amendments?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:37 amWow.
Gingrich and the other right wing-nut, economic terrorists (such as Limbaugh, Palin, Hannity and the list goes on…)
March 26th, 2009 at 11:40 amshould be sent to an island…far, far away! The poison that they spew infects our whole World…. You would think they would get the message that we don’t want them since they were voted out of this last election!
Actually AIG, using a fairly new law became something of a thrift [S&L] so it could be regulated by OTS
March 26th, 2009 at 11:41 am
But hey, I am just an uneducated, unhappy, friendless, Stalinist insect with nothing better to do all day
March 26th, 2009 at 11:42 am.
Gingrich thinks America should have been attacked…
AGAIN!

March 26th, 2009 at 11:42 amGingrich warning us about the evils of a dictatorship is a little like Hugh Hefner warning us about the evils of extramarital sex.
It causes thinking people’s BS detectors to go off, at which point they ignore him. The only people who will listen to him and take his word as gospel are the kool-aid drinkers who are already firmly in the camp of “let’s grasp at anything we can to discredit this administration”.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:43 amSomeone please help me understand the complexities, or, well, simplicities of the minds of these people on the fake news channels. Did Hannity or any of the other conservative’s ever mention dictatorship during the 6 years that the republicans held control of all three branches of government, all the while alienating anyone who disagreed with the most dangerous policies ever known to a civilized nation? I’ll take a link please.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:43 ami agree with tp that we shouldn’t be afraid of obama’s
plan to rescue the economy. but when you
combine gingrich’s hysteria about “dictatorships”
with organized, right wing and well armed militias
who are bored with shooting animals and are looking
for any excuse to shoot people then i for one tend
to get a little worried.
**
the bottom line is that fox news is taking a page
from the militia movement’s propaganda machine
and using it’s own “news” version of the “the turner diaries”
to foment violence against liberals and progressives.
that’s something we should all worry about.

I suspect Newt is largely ignored no matter what he says, other than FoxNews audience and some of the fellow lunkheads inside the Beltway. There’s undoubtedly a significant percentage of Americans who have never even heard of the guy.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:45 amThe correct answer is:
E: All of the above
March 26th, 2009 at 11:46 amToo bad that number isn’t 100%.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:48 amBy the way, did anyone hear the mention of Thinkprogress last night on Countdown?
March 26th, 2009 at 11:48 amHey Newt (and righties),
The “Chicken Little” act is gettin’ mighty f’in tedious.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:49 amIt should surprise no one with even a modicum of sanity that phrases like “dictatorship & power grab” used to describe Obama by ChristoTalibanist Rush Limbaugh foot soldiers like Newt are pouring forth right now. Ahead of the very real possibility of those same charges being levied against BushCo. (Keep the pressure up everyone. Don’t stop calling and demanding justice.)
It has been S.O.P. with that ilk for over 30 years to attack in the very same way they themselves have behaved.
First it was Dobson so many years ago who said basically, those who hate our intolerance are themselves intolerant.
Now its morphed into a belching feted Republican sewer pipe gushing calls for “revolution – dictatorship – fascism – socialism – behind enemy lines – well armed – power grab and on and on from the greatest hypocrites in modern American history.
If there is a bright side to this dark cloud of stench, its that it proves just how pants-wetting, knee-knocking afraid these ChristoTalibanist Republicans really are.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:50 amI hope it does. You see, we have to fight them over there on Wall Street, so we don’t have to fight them here on Main Street.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:51 amDon’t Republicans ever get so dizzy they just fall down?

March 26th, 2009 at 11:52 amFear, Fear, Fear….You will die if you vote Democratic. You will go broke if you vote Democratic. You will be oppressed if you vote Democratic.
For once let’s pick a problem and work on a solution. Let’s get some ideas together, discuss the concerns and benefits of the ideas and try to make good policy.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:55 amWOW, maybe we should just SHUT DOWN THE COUNTRY fool??
March 26th, 2009 at 11:55 amNewt the clown, question for ya?
So, when did the Obama Admin. try to pass the Patriot Act and when did his Admin try to pass the Military Commision Act?
Ooooohh, that’s riiight!
That was YOUR TEAM!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:56 amif members of congress — whether they be right wing, left wing, or chicken wing — actually TOOK THE TIME TO READ THESE BILLS a lot of this BULLSHIT could have been avoided.
CONGRESS: do your jobs!!! L2READ!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 11:56 amlet me see, you want the administration to be held accountable for these zoombied investment houses and yet have no authority to regulate it. oh, we can give them money and hope for “self-regulation”!
you gop talking heads should think this through before you speak: either you give people the authority, or stop holding them responsible. you can’t have it both ways, dudes.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:58 amNewt = a slimy little lizard.
The Repukes are just so desperate that they will say any ridiculous lie at all….
…waaaa, waaaa, waaaa, we lost power, people voted us out, we’re not happy now…
….waaaaa, waaaa, waaaa.
Fcuk off Newt, crawl back under your rock.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:58 amDontcha just love love former RWer Frank Schaeffer’s analogy of the right??
“It’s not a big percentage, it’s just a loud percentage. This is the drunk on the subway making all the trouble at the end of the car for all the people on the subway. There’s a hundred decent citizens in there and there’s one ass at the front end who is molesting women. That’s the Republican party now in terms of the loud part.”
March 26th, 2009 at 11:59 amHow is everyone enjoyed this dictatorship thing so far?
The beauty of the internet and how out of touch many Republicans are is that they have less and less ability to disavow past statements or make shit up without getting ANY flack about it. They still lie and contradict themselves regularly, but more people have access to the actual footage, audio, etc., and it really does make their lies harder to propagate outside of the circle of cretins that would believe them if they said urine makes a good facial rinse.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:04 pmIs Newt on the no fly list yet? Someone get a swatter!

No, just the “Butt Boys of the Corporatocracy” list.
March 26th, 2009 at 12:15 pmThis is what Newt Gingrich has to offer? Fearmongering! This is the man who led the “1994 Republican Revolution”. How pathetic!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:16 pmYes this is the same guy who wants one party rule. Go figurer. These people really believe that they are the choosen ones.
Yeah right the choosen ones who will ultimately destroy this country. Oh wait, this is the party of doom and gloom.
Pres. Obama came into office with an olive branch, bi-partisanship, blending some of this ideas to accommodate the GOP. They thru their leader became the party of NO.
They became a party of “who cares” about main street, we just want to get back into office so we can control everything. Now they have prompted up more insane commentators, in my opinion, inciting and spewing treasonous overtures.
He belongs to the Doomsday Party….

March 26th, 2009 at 12:48 pmYou know, I heard from my neighbor that Obama’s the anti-Christ!
March 26th, 2009 at 12:51 pmOh yeah, we forgot that one.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:05 pmFunny that Hannity, Gingrich et al weren’t crying “Dictator” when Bush asserted broad “unitary executive” powers or when the Repubs gutted with The Posse Comitatus Act.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:06 pmits really really amazing that these fools don’t realize we had a similar regulatory structure set up since the great depression.
its funny that gingrich played a major role in dismantling that structure in one of the biggest market driven power grabs in american history. there was no possibility for a single entity to become ‘too big to fail’ under glass-steagall.
then again, im no economist.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:17 pmIs it just me or do these republican ass-wipes atribute their own goals to that of the current president.
I have always believed that Bush/Cheney and one end-game in mind, which was the complete take over of the United States of America. Hell, Tom Delay and turd-blossom admitted they were only interested in one thing, a permanent republican majority – a.k.a. a dictatorship.
NEWT – state reptile of Georgia.
March 26th, 2009 at 1:22 pmNo, it’s not just you. Projection is a big part of the modern conservative psyche.

Regarding this so-called issue. Someone needs to ask one of those talking heads to do a week’s worth of broadcasts without their teleprompter. They would be lost without it.
I’m betting Billo uses a teleprompter. Limbaugh doesn’t need to because he has his notes right in front of him.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:04 pmThis is really quite insidious and alarming. Repugs are employing tactics that would never have been tolerated when Bush was president and took dictatorial powers unto himself, placing himself above the laws, corrupting the justice dpeartment, started an unprovoked war, and tortured prisoners.
Now that a Democrat (an intelligent black man no less) has begun to effectively deal with the enormous sh!tpile left on his doorstep, the traitors are gathering to rehearse their talking points and getting their jackboots polished.
As long as their media whores continue to give them an outlet, they will subvert our government. They, who walk and talk as fascists, are pointing fingers at the opposition.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:07 pmThis teleprompter nonsense is just too stupid. Does Obama use a teleprompter when at a town hall meeting? When at a press conference answering questions on all topics?
March 26th, 2009 at 2:08 pmavchavis at #9
Gingrich is exploiting that the American public doesn’t know the meaning of socialism or fascism – they just know they’re “bad.” The newt is too smart to be so stupid himself, but he knows how to demagogue and pander.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pmnot so much Obama’s budget, but the USA’s budget. Continuing the Iraq occupation, excalating the Afehganistan occupation and increasing drones attacks on Pakistan. 800 military bases World wide, an excessive military budget whithin the worse economy crisis…
March 26th, 2009 at 2:11 pmThe USA is bankrupt and continues to do everything to go down hill. It will not Fix the economy. It will destroy the USA as you used to know it.(it has been going like this for years now, that why I said ‘Not so much Obama’s budget’)
FACISM… well the USA become a FACIST STATE when Bush was placed (Not elected) as president. He walked all over the Constitution and the Bill of rights without any consequence.
War Criminals are still walking freely and speaking freely.
Obama’s dragging his feet to appoint a Special Prosecutor, thus owning Bush’s War Crimes.
Obama promised CHANGE… the only Change I’ve seen so far is how quickly Mr. Oabama ‘Changed’ his discourse regarding “Change came to Washington”…
Go on USA! Keep on this track!
PS. The US was a dictatorship during Bush’s 8 years if you take in consideration the last memos revealed las week or so, which were dismissed by their administration just weeks before leaving office!
March 26th, 2009 at 2:19 pmNewt’s efforts, as well as the circus at Fox News, are applying a basic rule of progaganda for the public. Repeat an accusation, over and over, even if not true, and it may stick. Fortunately, the counterpoint to this type of propaganda is information, wide and open, and people who know what socialism, fascism, dictatorship looks like, will see that Newt and his circus are only preaching to their own choir.
March 26th, 2009 at 2:50 pmThe entire Republican party including Rush, Cantor, Reilly, Hannity and others are jumping on the Goebbels Nazi bandwagon of the “big lie”. They are with McCarthy and Father Coughlin, excessive charged language (in this case conflicting ism’s) fear mongering and nothing positive.
March 26th, 2009 at 3:28 pmAlthough I might not agree with everything Obama suggests, one thing that makes Obama different than Bush and all Republicans is that he is trying very hard to reach to all groups, and I do support him for that.
Mr. Gingrich, That’s not dictatortship … !!!
Simply, the majority of Republican politicians are refusing to help Obama and participate in his plan ,because some already said they want to see Obama fails.
The time that Obama spent talking about the economy since his election is more that what Bush spoke about the economy in his all 8 years of presidency.
This is nothing but’Get scared of Obama’ message sent to GOP base that’s already scared to death.
March 26th, 2009 at 3:42 pmyeah…isnt Obama that president whose lawyers told him that he could hold american citizens indefinitely without trial, and could read the emails and tape the phonecalls of any american citizen at any time without a warrant? someone help me out here…newt???? anyone?

March 26th, 2009 at 4:38 pmI saw Dick Armey spewing something similar today. They are too stupid to realize that most of us have read books and done some of our homework since the last century and realize that their deregulation is the cause and not the cure. They should have kept up. It is easy to figure out. You can even get a good run down in Rolling Stone April 2, edition.
March 26th, 2009 at 5:52 pmWTF!
Publicly held companies! Not privately held companies!
Shareholders have rights!!!!
March 26th, 2009 at 6:37 pmThe Contrast is amazing. The country voted Obama by a wide margin. The person we get in the white house is articulate, steady and in command of his office, a natural leader.
March 26th, 2009 at 8:14 pmAs you watch the Republicans and their behavior, who do you want handling the affairs of this country? .
The Republicans are creating a long term image problem for short term political gains. They have been running the country the same way.
I hope Obama’s economic ideas work. Unfortunately, I don’t believe he has a clue about economics. Never in history has massive government debt helped any economy in the long run. His budget ideas are going to bury us, wreck the dollar, drive interest rates higher and kill our growth prospects. Please, read a book on capitalism, the greatest long-term wealth building system in history. Massive debt is not the way to go. But, I am afraid, citizens are going to find out the hard way.
March 26th, 2009 at 9:22 pmkwsventures Says:
On face value I couldn’t agree with you more. Ask yourself if the last 8 years have been healthy capitalism? If so why are we at this point. The system has been abused, the engine has been fed garbage and not been maintained. It is very sick. If it is not repaired it will not run! The capitalistic system is it’s people, well educated and in good health.
FDR took this country from complete desperation to the producing and fighting powerhouse that completely crushed the Axis powers. No minor accomplishment, but lots of government debt. In the long run this countries economy took off.
The interesting thing about FDR is that he used the capitalistic system to its fullest. Contrary to popular belief he put capitalism center stage as a model for the world to see.
Capitalism must be exploited for the entire country, not just a select few. That is what FDR can teach us. When capitalism is talyored for a select few (Reaganomics) the system will fail. Witness the present .
March 26th, 2009 at 10:03 pmRecessions are like forest fires. They wipe of the overgrowth, allowing the forest to rebuilt. Unfortunately, the federal government wants to save the economic overgrowth, the companies that should file bankruptcy, the losers, turning them into taxpayer funded welfare “zombie” companies. Japan tried the same thing and it was an utter failure. In 1989, the Japan stock market hit 39,000, 20 years later in it at 7,500. Why? Taxpayer funded welfare tried to bailout the losers, instead of letting them die and allowing new innovation to take up the slack. Jeez, has anyone read a book on capitalist economics, the greatest wealth building system in history? Has anyones studied economic history? Socialism, communism, statism, welfare and rest do not work. They kill growth. They kill innovation. They kill motivation. But, I hear guy’s like Obama, who have never even run a lemonade stand, lecture us over and over on economics and how to get out of the recession. Amazing.
March 26th, 2009 at 10:29 pmThe Republiscum Channel is always on top of the big stories aren`t they? and the Newt is in their top Ten shows, especially when touting Jonah Goldberg who has as much credibility(none) as any REICH wing talking head these days.
March 26th, 2009 at 11:54 pmkwsventures, I can’t argue the point. The question here is would it be pratical to let a company like AIG fail. They are the insurance company of insurance conpanies. The effects of GM failing would politically be to painful. These were both viable companies at one time. The trick is to bring back the viability without burning them down. Consider this point. The real enemey of good, healthy capitalism is monoply and size. I think if you check basic economics the economies of scale begin to fall off rapidly at some point with size. What would be so bad if we just broke these companies into smaller viable units. More competion, more managable and easier to regulate.
March 27th, 2009 at 12:12 amI think you must also come to the realization that CAPITALISM does have its limits. The over capacity in car manfacturing is going to let many new facilities idle. A resourse has been expended and these facilitites have no chance of producing.
A resoure has been expending for nothing.
I think Obama has shown the initive to put this country on a path to recovery. There will a lot of dynamics, changes and I think a better future. The last 8 years were bleak for most people I know, and calitalism was not working for us. The future of this country is a stake. Lets keep talking. New ideas are the key.
He’s right and more and more people are becoming aware of it. True blooded Americans will not let that happen. Count on it.
March 27th, 2009 at 2:37 amGingrich only shows his ignorance of the problem.
Something many of us shared with him.
But, after much reading of convoluted English,it is, NOW, “obvious”, that the problem was the failure to regulate and limit the gambling by non-bank institutions on “Hedge Funds”, Chairman Greenspan said once “Nobody knows what ‘Derivatives’ mean!” Perhaps, he knows by know.
It is simple, an investment in a Hedge Fund is like buying a ticket at the Horse Racing counter, and win or lose a lot.
Our Noble, Highly Educated and Grossly Overpaid finance leaders invested on the assurance, for example, that the oil futures would go up, and, Guess What? They made a Killing and laughed all the way to the bank. But, they never noticed that their winnings (”earnings”, is the misnomer) almost killed America! Small detail?
Not only that, their gamble involved over $642 Trillion, about the GNP of the world.
Why? Because of a lack of regulation, which was prevented by Greenspan and Rubin who told the lady (Ms B. Born) in charge of such regulations to stop and, according to the New York Times, berated her efforts.
Now that we know what happens if you leave the Bank Vault wide open, the use of proposed regulations, yet to be approved, is presented as dictatorial control like the Nazis.
They need to read more or hire an Economics Professor to teach the details, with some homework. For example, if we put no regulations, what would prevent the same abuse again?

The issues he could have mentioned is whether the Fed can properly balance the support and the control of financial goals.
A. Will they favor new regulations that will give them a chance to do all that they did, again?
B. Will they reduce interest rates and profits in favor of growth and jobs to let US compete with other nations?
Here is the Trick Question: Can this balance be adjusted by any set of regulations or formulas?
Or, should the FED be allowed to make all the proper winks and nods to the right people to insure his selection and spring another October Surprise repeat?
