Pressed By MSNBC, Pence Is Unable To Say What Deficit Would Be Under New GOP Budget

Earlier this week, President Obama challenged Republicans who have been ripping his budget proposal, saying, “Critics tend to criticize, but they don’t offer an alternative budget.” Today, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) released a GOP budget called “The Republican Road to Recovery.” “Here it is, Mr. President,” he said, proudly waving it in the air.

Except this “budget” is short on one key detail: numbers. The AP calls it “a glossy pamphlet short on detail and long on campaign-style talking points.” The budget proposes heavy tax cuts to the wealthy, which have time and again exploded the deficit. Today, MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell challenged Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) to say what the deficit impact of the GOP plan would be. Pence awkwardly tried to change the subject:

Q: So you don’t have the numbers now? About what you’re plan would be in terms of how it would cut the deficit or add to the deficit? You don’t have any numbers on that?

PENCE: Well, it’s really a broad – when the White House a few minutes ago was attacking the numbers in this bill, the tax cut numbers. There’s plenty of numbers in the Republican recovery plan. And we just really believe the President’s plan to raise taxes by nearly 2 trillion dollars on almost every American…deserves a debate on Capitol Hill.

Without details, “how is your plan credible?” asked O’Donnell. “Well, I thought through this morning, we didn’t have a plan, so it may be progress our plan is being attacked,” Pence responded. “This is the broad outline,” he said, stating that the GOP would introduce a bill soon. Watch it:

Pence is unable to specify what the deficit would result under his plan because his plan simply doesn’t say so. The plan contains three charts: “Gov spending as percentage of GDP,” “Future Debt Burden, and “Deficit Under Democratic Budgets.” Yet there is no chart about the GOP budget. Under “Republican Solutions” to excessive spending, the document states:

And Republicans would fully fund our ongoing commitments overseas while devoting the entirety of any savings from reduced fighting to deficit reduction, rebuilding our military, and funding our commitment to our veterans.

In a press conference today, reporters pressed Boehner on why the plan was so short on numbers. “What’s your goal?” “To do better,” said Boehner. “How much?” “You’ll see next week,” he said.

Update David Freddoso at the National Review writes: "I was not the only reporter in the room during the delayed press conference who had expected to see some numbers, at least ballpark. Today's press conference did not provide further details."
Update President Bush described his first budget this way: "It's clearly a budget. It's got a lot of numbers in it."

    – - Of course not. All these clowns have is bluster and their “righteous” indignation. The GOP needs to man-up and face facts; you guys LOST. Now suck it.

What can you expect from a crew who can’t even tell which flabby old white guy is their captain? Maybe they should just settle on that annoying little tween kid

  4. WAYNEBRO says:

Look at the DOW and the Nasdaq. For almost 2 weeks straight now they’ve been up. And many days WAY up. Today the DOW’s up over a full 2 percent, and the Nas is up almost 4!

And its been like that consistently for weeks. Ever since a few days after the President’s State of the Union.

Clearly the President’s programs ARE working. He said it would be a slow steady process and that’s exactly what we’re seeing. Before the SOTU the DOW was down in the 6’s. Now its ready to break 8. That doesn’t happen in a recessed market. It happens during the recovery of a recessed market, but not in one.

So I’m not sure why no ones talking about it (perhaps afraid of jinxing it, lol) but the fact is we’ve seen a strong and steady resurgence of the markets, and we’ve seen solid economic indicators in housing and elsewhere showing us that the President’s plan of STIMULUS, IS working.

Its time for the republicans to either get behind the President on this or get the hell out of the way.

  7. Uncle Ho says:

Don’t you know? It’s still the same piss flows down VOODOO ECONOMICS. You know the one, where cutting taxes on the filthy rich and cutting spending on the poor magically balances the budget.

POOF! No more deficit. Same formula Ronnie (Bonzo) Ray-gun used.

    sarc ON!

Time for me to go for the day.
    Carry on, libs.

Numbers? Shumbers… Republic-nuts don’t need to show no stinkin’numbers… What is wrong with you people? You gotta trust Republic-nuts. Worked for eight years under the Royal Emperor of Crawford, didn’t it?

Just sing along, kids: “I’ve got a loverly bunch of republican-nuts, see them, standing in a row: big ones, small ones, tanned ones, rich ones, some as big as your head…” With an apology to the great Danny Kaye.

The Republican-Emperor’s new clothes-budget. Oh, wait, the Emperor was deposed in late January. All that’s left of the Royal Dictatorship Court are a few motley REpublic-nut Fools, running around and shaking their swagger sticks at the horse flies. Not a pretty picture. GOP, RIP…

  10. Robert M. says:

What’s the use in asking a republican to come up with facts and figures regarding a budget? We’ve seen how the bush-2 tax cuts for the wealthy have “expanded” the U.S. economy. And we’ve seen how the so-called “drug benefit” fulfilled the budgetary estimates provided by bush-2.

Everything the republicans say is a lie intended to cover their own a$$ or protect the ill-gotten wealth of their corporate overlords.

Well, it will take some time to put numbers to it. We’ve only had 8 years to think about this, ya know.

  22. MarkD says:

And we just really believe the President’s plan to raise taxes by nearly 2 trillion dollars on almost every American …

So almost every American now makes more than $250K?

Or does the GOP only consider as truly American those who make more than $250K?

Yes, I know the answer to that second question. But still ..

  23. Hoodathunk says:

dbadass, some bibles are edible, you know. And they can be used to patch holes in the roof of a shack.

There are no charts for a GOP budget nor statistics to back up their plan. Basically, their pamphlet is nothing from GOP attack mode against the Democrats and the Obama Administration. And they certainly don’t have an intelligent budget director like Peter Orszag to crunch realistic numbers to give the American people an insight of their plan. Instead, we get the same Party of No [and the same ones that gave Bush a blank check on any bill that he wanted passed], Boner and Britney Cantor, feeding the usual Program with Empty Promise Plan to rehash their resentment to President Obama’s plan to fix this finanical crisis that he inherited by the former Sith Administration.

Well…I have to admit, I wouldnt mind a slice of that 12 BILLION dollars of american taxpayer money that went missing in iraq…any of your sucessful republican friends know where that might have gone?

  102. Hoodathunk says:

PLC, I think Troll Central has pre-empted you. I think they are working on version 2.7 which includes random handle regeneration.

  103. Hoodathunk says:

    7, 32, 1.5 trillion, a couple of bajillion.

There you go Boner, numbers for your one page budget.

  104. 666lattes says:

  105. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Of course, they know if they pass
    > the outragoues budget of Obama

Wouldnt you mind comparing the cost of Obama’s “outrageous” budget to the cost of the war your hero bush started to get rid of WMD’s that didnt exist?

  106. teri3157 says:

Slightly off topic…long story, short…RE: Trolls!

A number of the “talking point” rethug, conservative christian-type bloggers, call-in’s artist are actually broiler room workers.

I heard an email on air, written to Thom Hartman (Air America) from a regular conservative call-in guy to the show.
He “confessed” his working at a professional broiler room “entity” of the GOP whereas daily “talking points” were handed out and the workers started their posting and call-in’s. The guy said he was paid per post/call. He was taught how to keep people going, how to keep the radio personality going and make sure the topic was swayed to his talking points. The only reason he informed Tom, was because he was leaving the broiler room for another job (he liked Tom).

With that said, keep in mind that entertaining “trolls” (or playing with their heads) is only helping them earn money so they can attend Creationist College and breed more Neanderthal off-spring. WE have the power to “bleed THEIR beast” by ignoring them like the crazy person who lives at the end of the block, reporting their post, thereby, “bleeding the beast” by denying trolls of the emotional dirt they throw in everyone’s face.

Post around them and report them so they can’t earn a living.

But I’ve got this Certificate of Authenticity right here… it says ‘Independent’ and it’s all Gold foil and cool… wait a minute… that doesn’t say ‘Independent’ it says ‘Imperial’ and someone seems to have scratched out margarine underneath that…

Huh, you may be right ralph…

  108. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Hoodathunk, you might be right. I have also noticed major flaws in my TrollBlogger2009 – the lack of grammatical and spelling errors as well as a lack of random topic generation. I may have to abandon the project as it is hard on me to try to think like a troll. I have noticed some signs of deterioration in my own posts, starting with “stupid fingers syndrome”.

  109. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Get the Liberal nazis to shut
    > anyonw up who doesn’t fall
    > in line with the liberal agenda!

I’m still waiting for one of the trolls to tell me about ANY prominent right wing blog that doesnt ban and delete any posters expressing left wing sentiments, or even dissent from the “party line”

  110. SKdeA says:

  111. SKdeA says:

Notice that the liberals don’t waste their money trying to convince, derail or bother the conservative blogs…

  112. Hoodathunk says:

PLC, it takes a hardy soul to be able to generate troll software. Most of the regulars here will probably agree that it is sort of fun to occasionally mimic them but it causes migraines if kept up for more than a post or two.

I believe Troll Central uses the 10,000 monkeys to type the bible method of programming.

  113. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Except this “budget” is short on one key detail: numbers. The AP calls it “a glossy pamphlet short on detail and long on campaign-style talking points.”

Wow, if the AP said that about the Republicans, it must be really bad.

  114. Ape-Man says:

Let’s see if i have this right – now the GOP doesn’t do plans anymore. They have shed members and distilled themselves down until the last remaining Republicans are pure pontificators, devoid of original thought; devoid of experience or skill in governance. Yet they still keep on going and going. Maybe they will eventually slip out of politics altogether, and into the tabloids where they belong.

  115. pastcaring says:

    #120 teri3157 Says:

The mere idea gives me a massive headache. Talking with dinosaurs would be more enlightening.

  117. Bozo The Neoclown says:

plus, here’s the part i find hilarious matt,
the “honor” of accessing certain reichwing blogs actually cost money to participate in the like-minded circle jerks they contain.

  118. Briseadh na Faire says:

And Republicans would fully fund our ongoing commitments overseas while devoting the entirety of any savings from reduced fighting to deficit reduction, rebuilding our military, and funding our commitment to our veterans.

More “trust us” budgets from Republicans. Well, we tried that for 8 years and they destroyed the economy.

But the upper 5% really made off like bandits.

    hmmmmm……

  119. Zooey says:

    kkk,

    Liberal Nazis?

    Please educate yourself. Sheesh…

  120. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Post around them and report
    >them so they can’t earn a living

Although what you’re claiming about these guys getting padi to post sounds ludicrous, these people are such self parodys, I actually tend to beleive it could be true. However, I look at it this way…anyone willing to take the “mental janitor” job of being a troll probably isnt spending his hard earned 10 cents a post on something productive..he’s probably spending it on blow up dolls, online porn, some sort of homoerotic action figures, or oreos to stuff thir face with while playing some violent video game all day. If what you say is true, these people are literally the intellectual equivalent of filthy, mentally ill homeless people pushing around a grocery cart with a broken wheel, picking up empty beer cans of thought.. personally, im happy to help drain the people who are paying for this drek of thier resources, cuz frankly, theres alot more dangerous and harmful things they could be doing with that money than giving it to these blizzards of congnitive dissonance that we know as trolls.. just my 10 cents ;)

  121. Hoodathunk says:

And Republicans would fully fund our ongoing commitments overseas

This can’t mean that the 1% crowd would personally dig into the cash they raped from the government? Xe probably has some mercenaries available.

  122. Badger says:

President Obama challenged the Press to discover whether GOP had an ACTUAL Alternative to his Budget..

the Press took up his challenge….and the answer, so far, is NO…the GOP doesn’t .

    Nice Work…Barack

And isn’t it a Boiler room???

  123. Hoodathunk says:

Boiled or broiled, trolls would still live in a world of bad taste.

  124. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    kellykinsel Says:
Obama promises to end war but sends 170,000 more to war

I think you mean 17,000 not 170,000. But considering how hysterical you are, it’s not surprising that you make typos. What kind of drugs are you on? They’re making you weird.

  125. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Dr. Hussein Matt Says:
kellykinsel, are you capable of a civil and healthy debate or are you just here to flame bait and hurl insults?

I assume that is a rhetorical question.

  126. Hoodathunk says:

CJ, I would not be at all surprised to discover someone is running the equivalent of Troll Central and paying people to harass liberal/progressive blog sites. They have the coin and there are people out there who just may be desperate enough to play the game.

I would suspect a high turnover.

  127. Zooey says:

Troll Central must reek of urine…

  128. Hoodathunk says:

Help Wanted: Trolls to post outrageous and inane things, coherency not required. 5 cents per post with a dime bonus for lasting more than 10 posts. Literacy not a requirement but marginal typing skills needed. Previous history of lunacy a plus.

  129. iamwhoiam says:

Tax cuts for the rich. How refreshing.

    Clowns.

  130. Ape-Man says:

The Trolls are failing to share their ideas, and failing to learn from others ideas, and failing to resolve issues in exactly the same way the Republicans are failing at politics. I submit that trolls and republicans are one and the same.

I actually hope the RNC or some other wingnut group is paying people to troll. If so, they are wasting money that could go to other, perhaps more effective means of “catapulting their propoganda”.

    MORONS!!

I love watching this one term president Obama. He is showing the world how incompetent democrats are when they are in power. They make republicans look like geniuses

When are we gonna start culling the herd by getting the guillotines out and ridding the political landscape of their worthless screeching???

Back when U.S. Citizens were trying to cope with the reality of the demolished World Trade Center, these scumbags were busy blaming everything on President Clinton, because the bush-2 administration had “only” been office for 9 months. 9 months — that’s 20% of a 4-year term in office.

Now, less than 3 months into President Obama’s first term in office, these demented idiots are complaining that he is incompetent because he has not reversed the economic woes their political party of choice created over a 30 year history in which they waged open warfare aginst the American middle class.

There is another word for this psychological syndrome: reprobate — someone who cannot recognize their mistakes and error-filled beliefs.

Can anyone tell me what the deficit/budget numbers were a year ago?

Following the 12 year reign Regan/Bush-1 the national debt was just about USD $5 trillion. When bush-2 left office, that figure was up to USD $10 trillion.

  138. avchavis says:

i’m watching Keith Olbermann right now and the clip with Boehner was just too good! My sides hurt from laughing at the fraudulent rethuglican party trying to pawn off a fake budget – AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHA!

  140. labman57 says:

The GOP’s “alternative” budget blueprint is little more than a plan stating “bigger tax breaks for rich folks” written on a cocktail napkin.

  141. WaltTheMan says:

If Obama’s budget is going to raise the taxes of every American by 2 trillion dollars, I may have to declare bankruptcy. Still that would infuse 640 sextillion dollars into Federal coffers. That would erase the national debt forever (or at least until the next Gooper administration)!

  142. graceland9 says:

As a former English teacher, I can tell you that this “budget plan” is poorly written. Look at this example, from page 5:

“And even community organizers, such as
    ACORN, performing “neighborhood stabilization.”

Not only is it a fragment, otherwise known as an incomplete sentence, but it also begins with “And”, which is unacceptable in a formal document. Furthermore, the tone is decidedly childish. This would have warranted a rewrite in my class.

  143. kwsventures says:

Understand, every time the government makes a new law, regulation and/or tells you what you can and can’t do, you give up a little more of your liberty. It is the snowball affect. But, I have come to realize that U.S. citizens say they have and want freedom, but really they don’t. They want to give the federal government power to handle all problems, thereby giving up more and more liberty. It is a sad situation. Our founding fathers would be embarrassed.

  144. The Moderate Squad says:

Robert M. – Thanks for taking kelly-dim-wit to the wood shed.

No doubt they would have been thoroughly disgusted w/ BotchCo and torture, endless war, wiretapping, DoJ-gate… you prolly got a point… someplace…

    Keep looking. You’ll find it.

  146. The Moderate says:

Its time for the republicans to either get behind the President on this or get the hell out of the way.”

look guy you cant friggin have it both ways, if Rush is wrong that it was Obama’s fault when the market tanked then you “waynebro” cant declare friggin “mission acomplished” when the guy gets lucky and theres a friggin little rally.

This i’m saying in that I voted for the friggin guy and I would sort of like him to succede but we need to be careful not to blindly follow that guy like lemmings off a clif, like we did for Pesident Bush pushing us into Iraq.

I say we need to listen to what the Republicans are saying not brow beat them to kneel and show fealty to this president just like the democrats did to President Bush when he friggin led the charge to invade Iraq. This i’m saying in that this guy is blowing the budget with his wasteful spending and clinging to the Bush Doctrine of rendition, not to mention the party of Reagan was the idea party that pulled us out of the last nasty ass recession caused by Carter.

Theres enough blame to go around for both party’s, I mean take a gander at Barney friggin Frank and his partisan stooges who caused this mortgage meltdown by forcing these companies to lend to deadbeats, we need to act bipartisany like Obama wants and listen to the Republicans pushing for regulation and oversite of these damn crooks.

  147. TRDaggett says:

As usual I come late to the party…

When I saw Boehner holding up their “budget” I was immediately reminded of the commercial with Clara Peller & Co: “It certainly is a big bun.” “It’s a big fluffy bun.” — “Where’s the beef?”.

Sans Clara Peller it’s too bad Helen Thomas wasn’t there to reprise the role with the same question..

[Thanks to Wikipedia for helping refresh my memory.]
