Steele on Limbaugh gaffe: ‘There is a logic behind it,’ ‘it’s all strategic.’

Earlier this month, RNC Chairman Michael Steele famously called Rush Limbaugh’s antics “incendiary” and “ugly,” resulting in a conservative backlash against the new GOP leader. Ultimately, Steele apologized to Limbaugh and has since cut back on his media appearances. Yesterday, however, in an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, Steele said it was all part of his master plan:

STEELE: So if I do something, there’s a reason for it. Even, it may look like a mistake, a gaffe. There is a rationale, there’s a logic behind it. [...]

Q: There’s a rationale behind Rush, all that stuff?

STEELE: Yup, yup. … I want to see what the landscape looks like. I want to see who yells the loudest. I wanted to know who says they’re with me but really isn’t. … It helps me understand my position on the chess board. It helps me understand, you know, where the enemy camp is and where those who are inside the tent are.

“It’s all strategic,” Steele claimed. Watch it:

Steele also left the door open to running for President in the future. “I would think about it. I have to have a very long conversation with the wife and kids,” he said.

Uh, no… stewarjt’s comment had nothing to do with race.

It was an observation on the hapless campaign that Michael Steele would likely run, if his performance as RNC chair is any indication.

Why did you immediately assume that Michael Steele’s race had anything to do with it?

I said “hapless” because Michael Steele has been a laughingstock as RNC chair. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you haven’t been paying attention.

So there must be some other reason you are giving him a hard time for maybe wanting to run for President. He has every right to do that just like anybody else does.

    Zoeey,

Do all of you only talk to people that agree with everything you say or do you actually get out and relate to many different types of people?
    __________________________________________________________

I can’t speak for Zooey, but I’ll take a stab at answering your question.

No, I don’t only talk to people who agree with everything I say. That would be incredibly boring. In fact, I don’t even think I KNOW anybody who agrees with absolutely everything I do — even the most like-minded thinkers disagree on a few issues.

I am a progressive, and most of my opinions tend to lean to the left. Yet I have friends and even family members who are on the opposite side of the political spectrum (I even lived in Orange County, CA for eight years). We are capable of having lively and interesting discussions where we air our points of view and listen to each other’s — conducted in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

Here on TP, I also enjoy sharing my viewpoint and listening to the thoughts of others. There are some conservatives who post here regularly with intelligent arguments and I like reading and responding to them (Keltoi and backup are a couple of examples). Even though we usually (but not always) disagree, we can have interesting discussions without attacking each other personally.

And then there are people who only have the capability of parroting tired right-wing talking points, and these people will never engage in any kind of development of their arguments and never rebut flaws others find in their logic — they just think that by repeating the same talking point over and over and over again, it’s going to sway somebody. Or they think that if they can have the last post on a subject, they somehow have “won”. These people are tiresome — both here on TP and in person. And it’s these people whose ability to relate to others different from themselves I question.

    Evil thrives on apathy.

I just think going after a foundation that is trying to help rape victims is a battle that might have been served better another way.

What foundation are you refering to? I see BillO being “gone after”, and deservedly so. Do you mean that because he appeared at a benefit that we should then back off of him? I am pretty sure that one could find worthwhile causes that (to use a hackeneyed but easy example) the Nazis supported. That does not mean that one ignores the things that are wrong-headed. There’s not a balance where one can weigh enough good deeds to balance out the bad deeds.

But enjoy your day. Being mad all the time takes years off your life.

You presume too much. I think that most people here are in a rather pleasant mood most of the time.

Ummmm… This is not a sporting event. Our country elected a new leader. In a sporting event you can go out and party after your team wins the championship and wait until next gaming season to start all over. This is a matter of governmance, which never ends — there is no “win” or “lose” in that whole matter, unless you are bound up in partizan politics to the point of viewing it as a football match.

Technically this is an ad hominem — you attempt to argue that the other person’s positions are not worth consideration because (insert an attack on the person, and not their position).

While many here are highly educated, actually education means nothing. You could have 27 degrees for 48 schools, and it means nothing if you still cannot think or present a rational argument. People with no formal education are not, by virtue of that lack of a piece of paper, unintelligent. talk about an elitist attitude (yes, that is mean derogatorily) — to presume that one or more pieces of paper indicate a greater intelligence. How shall we compare the “great thinkers” of history to modern education? Almost all of such figures can be found to have no education that even resembles our modern western university model. And even some who did very poorly (as I recall, Einstein was a lousy student with poor grades).

  130. snowcker says:

tpafla is right to a certain extent. The man is likely not an idiot by the strict definition of the word. Idiots don’t make it through Georgetown Law. He is however a prime example of the Peter Principle: “people rise to the level of their incompetancy.” Fortunately for him, the Republican Party has sought to make him an exception to the rule.

The man was apparently a good foot soldier for the Republican party in a fairly blue state with a large black population. His addition to the 2002 Maryland republican ticket as the lt. gov. candidate likely did its job in moving votes to the republican ticket. His time in office was not exactly marketed with high achievements and praise.

One of the problems with the republican party is they don’t get that Dems, Independents and yes even a portion of Republicans respect Obama based on the content of his character not on the color of his skin. As such we’ve seen the promotion of Steele, Palin and Jindal within the party.

The fact that these people are becoming exceptions to the Peter Principle seems lost on the base of the Republican party. As a result you get Jindal’s weak response to Obama’s address of congress; Steele being anti-pro-anti-abortion, kissing Limbaugh’s ass and poor management at RNC headquarters; and Palin, well don’t get me started.

This rhetoric is generated at the leadership levels. Until their leadership stops with the “enemy” and “game” and other such divisive nonesense we will continue to see the followers parroting the attitude: which is, obviously, the danger with all the “we want you armed and dangerous” kind of rhetoric that they are cavalierly tossing around — it may not ’stick’ with the majority, but there WILL be a group of people who “hear” those “orders” a little differently form the normal person, and who will take such comments as explicit permission or even as marching orders.

Sorry, this is OT, people; but someone pushed the experience button.

After high school, Obama studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science.

After working at Business International Corporation (a company that provided international business information to corporate clients) and NYPIRG, Obama moved to Chicago in 1985. There, he worked as a community organizer with low-income residents in Chicago’s Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the city’s South Side.

Obama entered Harvard Law School in 1988. In February 1990, he was elected the first African–American editor of the Harvard Law Review. Obama graduated magna cum laude in 1991.
After law school, Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer, joining the firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School. And he helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign.

Obama published an autobiography in 1995 Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. And he won a Grammy for the audio version of the book.

Obama’s advocacy work led him to run for the Illinois State Senate as a Democrat. He was elected in 1996 from the south side neighborhood of Hyde Park.

During these years, Obama worked with both Democrats and Republicans in drafting legislation on ethics, expanded health care services and early childhood education programs for the poor. He also created a state earned-income tax credit for the working poor. And after a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.
In 2000, Obama made an unsuccessful Democratic primary run for the U. S. House of Representatives seat held by four-term incumbent candidate Bobby Rush.
    source

He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992 to 2004.
From 2004-2008 Obama was a State Senator, and he campaigned for President of the United States.
    Well. He wasn’t a cheerleader.

  159. FrJackHackett says:

Just gettin’ in on the grammar question. I think punctuation has to be part of overall grammar. “Jim’s a friend of mine” and “Jim’s new car” show that the first sentence is using an apostrophe for a contraction and the second indicating a possessive form for a proper noun. One could argue that it can be figured out without the punctuation but the punctuation certainly does make it clear. It’s even more noticeable in possessive situations when you have to distinguish between the singular and plural possessive: e.g. Mother’s purses (multiple purses owned by one woman) vs. Mothers’ purses (multiple purses owned by more than one woman). Haven’t consulted a grammar text for this but is that even necessary?

  160. FrJackHackett says:

I went up the page to find what started the grammar question and I have to say, with all respect to joe cantwell, that device of ending a sentence, particular one meant to be on the insulting side, with an “isn’t it” or an “aren’t you” is really not meant as a question even though it is put in the word order for a question. It’s meant to be added emphasis, like “you’re quite the piece of work, aren’t you.” It’s a different way of saying what I think the Brits put this way: “You’re quite the piece of work, you are.” That’s definitely a better way to put it to avoid the appearance on paper of actually asking a question. In speech, however, we say that so it’s clearly not a question. See what I’m getting at here?

    Fair enough.

I think as you become more familiar with our regular commenters and our personalities, you’ll recognize that joe cantwell is almost always delightfully tongue-in-cheek and yet frequently very insightful. I consider myself a fan.

And as far as your observation on grammar goes, a skillful writer can certainly bend the rules to get away with ending a sentence with a period, as you note. But if one fails to demonstrate skillful use of language, such a usage looks an awful lot like ignorance.

Our friend to whom joe directed his comment had not, in my estimation, demonstrated such a command of written language, even though his comment had begun with this message to the community at large: “you make it obvious none of you have anything that resembles an education”.
