O’Reilly Defends His Assault On ThinkProgress: I ‘Just Presented The Facts’
As ThinkProgress continues to wage an action campaign against Bill O’Reilly’s harassment machine, the Fox News host is getting increasingly belligerent in his attacks on TP, the Center for American Progress, and CAP’s founder and CEO, John Podesta. On Wednesday, O’Reilly lashed out, calling TP and CAP part of a “well-financed, well-coordinated cabal” that will “go after your sponsors, they’ll go at your house, they’ll go after your family.”
Last night, O’Reilly defended his attacks, reading letters from viewers condemning the “far-left hate machine.” When one viewer asked if O’Reilly was worried about a lawsuit for his slandering of Podesta, O’Reilly insisted he had “just presented the facts”:
O’REILLY: Gary Stebnitz, Madison, Wisconsin: “O’Reilly, how in the world do you expect to avoid a lawsuit after your attack on John Podesta?”
Now, I want you to write this down, sir, so you can read it to all of your Kool-Aid crew out there in Madison. Podesta is running a hate Web site. Everything we said about him was true. We used no ad hominem attacks, just presented the facts. Got it?
As he read the letters, the screen showed CAP’s logo with the title “HATE MACHINE” underneath. Watch it:

– O’Reilly on ThinkProgress: “They’re insects, OK?” [3/25]
– O’Reilly on Podesta: “This smear merchant, character assassin John Podesta…” [3/25]
And as for the “facts” O’Reilly presented, he repeatedly insisted that CAP and NBC News were affiliated. First he insisted that “elements at NBC News” paid Amanda to write about O’Reilly and that Amanda “was obviously used by NBC News.” Two days later, O’Reilly switched gears to declare that Podesta — and, by some sort of transitive property, President Obama — is in control of NBC News:
O’REILLY: And Podesta’s mainstream media is, of course, NBC News. That’s the outlet Podesta uses. … A well coordinated, well financed cabal attacking dissent, it’s a pretty big story, especially because it involves Podesta, who has access to the president and NBC, which along with its parent company General Electric is grossly misusing its power.
Despite his frantic tirade against CAP’s “well-coordinated, well-financed cabal” the night before, O’Reilly insisted last night, “I’m not a conspiracy guy.”

In this post, Amanda 1) said that Bill O’Reilly was going to speak at the Alexa Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping rape victims, and 2) quoted Bill O’Reilly verbatim on comments he made about another rape victim in the past. THAT’S ALL SHE DID. In other words, she did her job — reporting on little ironies like this is what she does.
Now Bill is exploiting Amanda and TP to boost his profile among the kool-aid drinkers, which is no surprise — that’s how he operates. But when he lies and then constantly refers to his lies as “facts”, it’s starting to look like lawsuit time.

There are a couple of reasons for this. First, it’s pure projection. We hold up a mirror, Bill sees himself in the mirror and sees hate, Bill doesn’t recognize himself and assumes the hate is coming from the holder of the mirror.
And second, people like Bill and the trolls who post here like to throw the word “hate” around for the same reason they like the words “racist”, “fascist”, “socialist”, etc. It’s random invective they fling without feeling any obligation to define their terms or justify the usage of the word.

Ants steal your picnic PB&J’s when you aren’t looking but they also overwhelm crop-destroying locusts and can lift 100 times their own body-weight and though their societal structure is rigid each ant knows its job and does it well for the good of the community.
Cock-roaches consume garbage and thus remind humans to keep their domiciles clean. New York roaches especially like glazed donuts and thus can help humans keep to a healthy diet.
So, all in all, being compared to an insect can mean being compared to rational, social, productive creatures who are in the majority, preserve society for the common good, who like to have some fun (see; donuts and PB&J’s), benefit other animals (see; honey, consuming garbage and crop-destroying locusts) and who obviously shag a lot (hence their numbers).
Given these fundamental characteristics they have not only survived for 150 million years but will also survive for another 150 million years.
So to be be compared to insect is really not an insult but a compliment–as long as the comparison is being made by someone who knows what they are talking about.
Otherwise it is only intended as an insult, but if the ‘insulted’ doesn’t ‘get it’ because the insult isn’t supported by fact, the ‘insult’ fails.
I’m just sayin’.

March 27th, 2009 at 3:02 pmI keep seeing and hearing TP, MSNBC and others asking why O’Reilly does this when it is so obvious he hasn’t so much as toe in the reality pool, that he is easily proven to be a liar, hypocrite and a fraud by his own words.
They keep asking why he does this.
It is really very simple. For O’reily, Rush, Fox and all to survive they have to keep their audience. This isn’t about gaining an audience. FOX had a ready made audience from Rush’s conditioned base when it started.
The trick is to keep them and to do that they cannot allow the reality of their lies and spin to take hold in their viewers/listeners’ minds. Thus the need for reality free demonizing and stalking. It’s the same thing the right began doing years ago to control their followers minds. They demonized any source of information which did not go along with their ideology in lockstep. That is why most right wingers will not trust, NBC, CBS, NPR, PBS, the NYT, LaT, BBC, WP… the list is endless. Outside of Olberman and Rachel, which are really only recent developments, anyone with half a brain knows those media outlets are not “liberal” – many of them pimped for the war and rarely did any of them ever try to expose Bush’s criminal activity, and then not until after the damage was done. MSNBC kicked Donahue, its highest rated show, off the air because they didn’t want an anti-war Iraq voice to be heard. The NYT and WP pages are full of neocon pablum.
Anyway, all the demonization has left millions of our fellow Americans under the spell of FOX, Rush and Sun Myung Moon’s media. That’s who the right trusts. Today they have more outlets on the net but they are clones of the aforementioned. One only needs to listen to local right wing Rush wannabe radio to confirm this. Notice how liberals have been critical of Obama? They are giving him a chance for the most part but they are also critical. You did not see that with Bush and the right until Bush became such an obvious liability that they had to try and get way from him. For the first 5 years it was “Bush can do no wrong.”
This is all about information control, controlling what a conservative will allow in their minds. A right winger may say they read the NYT and tell you because of this they look at “both sides” but in truth they are preconditioned not to accept anything negative about their ideology, as Rush and company define it for them. Information control is a mind control technique. Cults thrived on it.
O’Reilly knows he is full of it, he knows he has been caught in lie after lie, he knows KOS ins’t the KKK, and Amanda isn’t a villian but he has to tell those old folks who listen to him that he is being lied about by evil forces or his viewers may actually look into it and see the light. It’s all about information control, a mind control technique.
Between what O’reilly does and now what Beck is doing, they are taking the country to a dark place, but Rupert does not care, he wants ratings. Ratings equal “good” in conservaworld and O’reilly and all are trying to hang onto what they’ve got. Beck is a way to gin up the same people they have always fed off of. I bet if you did a survey you would not see new viewers tuning into Beck, just the same captive audience, the old Rush conditioned radio audience that FOX has depended on since day one. These are people who must be told daily that they are being persecuted by dark un-American forces. Reality be damned.
