Reid To Critics Of ‘Moderate’ Democrats: You’re ‘Very Unwise And Not Helpful’

In recent weeks, a number of progressive groups and commentators have criticized Sen. Evan Bayh (D-IN) for his attempts to organize his fellow Conservative Democrats into a new Blue Dog-style caucus that will work to “restrain the influence of party liberals in the White House and on Capitol Hill.” Now, however, Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is telling the Bayh critics to back off. This morning at a breakfast briefing with reporters, Reid called the critiques “very unwise and not helpful“:

reid_bayh.jpg“I think it’s very unwise and not helpful,” Reid said Friday morning. “These groups should leave them alone. It’s not helpful to me. It’s not helpful to the Democratic Caucus.”

Reid, who said he hadn’t seen or heard the ads, added that “most of [the groups] run very few ads — they only to do it to get a little press on it.”

Later, Reid said he had “no qualms” with Bayh’s new Blue Dog-style coalition and told reporters that “‘any public statements’ Senate moderates have made have been helpful.” But as Rachel Maddow noted earlier this week, at the moment, the only result of Bayh forming his group has been to give Republicans “way more power” than they otherwise would have.

Reid’s comments appear to grow out of a fear that progressive criticisms of Bayh and his fellow Conservative Democrats might upset them so much that they would vote against Obama’s agenda out of anger. But some of Bayh’s allies are already indicating that they may be opposed.

What should I do with my criticisms of spineless majority leaders who get consistently rolled by an unpopular minority party?

  3. LiberalVoter says:

The Democrats really need to change their leadership. Reid might be a good person but he is the wrong choice for Senate majority leader. I wonder if anyone has reminded him he is the majority leader?

I just heard the California Republican Party leaders on the radio. They were saying Schwarzenegger had moved to the extreme left. That is what the Republicans call the middle? The extreme left? I see the Democrats are still letting the Republicans control the message. Very sad.

I am admittedly baffled by this group. They are in a position to take some actions that will beneficial in the long run, but choose to be obstructionist, instead. They are proposing to join a group with no budget plan and one which has stated clearly that their goal is only to bring down Democratic numbers. It is an odd and counter-productive manner in which to garner publicity and try to give the conservatives in their base something to rally around. But how do you rally around a flag pole with no flag?????

I’m getting really tired of politician’s and pundits telling us that it’s unhelpful, unpatriotic, unwise or un-anything else to criticize and speak out.

I don’t even mind conservatives criticizing when they have some kind of rational behind it.

But the idea that we should just STFU because it calls attention to something is unwise and unhelpful.

I see the radical rightwing extremists and so called Christian right are all up in arms and interpreting recent comments by China and Treasury secretary Geithner suggesting we may need to change the “reserve” currency as a move to a one world currency.

Question: Since the US dollar has been the “reserve” currency for decades wouldn’t these radicals and Christian zealots have to admit that the US dollar has been the “one world currency” for years and years to support their argument?????

I agree Guido! If the republican’ts want to cry socialism lets give it to them! These fear mongers on the right have been crying communism and socialism since the 1930’s whenever a democratic bill suggested anything regarding higher taxes on corporations or social programs for the poor and yet we have not become a socialist country.

Their cries of communism have changed since the fall of the Soviet Union (Thanks to Ronny Raygun *rolling eyes*) so now they cry socialism in connection with Hugo Chavez….Their cries ring hollow except to all of their idiotic supporters.

Whats their budget plan? More of the same from the last eight years? More tax cuts for the wealthy? More subsidies for the Oil companies? More tax breaks for the poor corporations? It seems their way reeks of fascism.

Sorry I’m late to the cabal meeting everybuggy but I just flew in from Africa and boy are my wings sore! Reid you should shut your effing piehole. This sorry excuse for a majority leader seems to only find his balls when he’s knocking President Obama or progressives. Hey Harry, America voted for change this past November. That means his initiatives are deeply important to the majority of this Nation’s citizens (remember the citizens Harry?). Your BFF’s in the DINO crowd are yesterday’s news. They won’t be around for long and hopefully neither will you. The LAST thing this Country needs right now is obstruction of the Presiden’t agenda by corporate-owned members of his own damned party. Mr. Reid, is Senator Bayh and his little club holding their secret meetings on the taxpayer’s dime? During the workday when they should be working their @sses off for the American people at a time in our Nation’s history when we so desparately need relief from HMO costs and pharmaceutical bills? Do you know what I think is “not very wise or helpful”? Having a majority leader who doesn’t fight for American citizens and coddles a pack of corporate owned crybabies who only care about big money donations and their own relevence over the needs of American families! What are you going to do to control your party sir? Sorry, silly question, you’ll probably bend over to the minority like you’ve been doing for the last couple of years. What concerns me and I’d say many progressives is HOW THESE DINOS VOTE! It would be one thing if they were honestly moderate Dems who try to work to sway some of their Republican brethren to vote for the budget but that is not the case. Their sole objective is to throw a wrench into healthcare reform much to the glee of their corporate overlords and to stand WITH the Republican minority.

Amen. I want to hear specifics. All they ever say is the want to govern off their core values. Well what are they? How much is to much government? What departments would they eliminate? What social services would they cut and how much? How far do we move religion into government? Do we mandate noon prayer? How much privacy do we have to give up to be as they say safe?
How far do we cut wages so corporations gave fulfill their need for greed? How many and who dies because of no health care? Who’s kids do not get an education?

Why is the term “moderate” always seem to apply to spineless, corporatist pigs who support, in the end, the greedy ruling class RepubliCAN’Ts?

O/T: Terrorist Obama is the biggest terrorist in the world now, having inherited the title from Terrorist Bush in late January 2009. Obama is committing war crimes in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan. Obama continues to support imperial zionist Israel, by providing military aid, such as cluster bombs, napalm and white phosphorus bombs to drop on Lebanon and Gaza. Imperial war crimes we can believe in…

Why is TP afraid to talk about current US imperial aggression and colonial occupation around the world?

I, too, think we should have term limits. The term should be 12 years. But before we do that, we need to take the house from 2 year terms to 4 year terms. A two year term is ridiculous. Because of the short time span most house members spend 50% of their time fundraising to get ready for their next run. So, if we did that, it would mean two terms for Senators and three for congresspeople.

It’s fitting that these dems are quite literally exactly enough to make the remaining Dems on equal footing with the Republicans. In other words, it’s like it was distinctly planned to deadlock the Senate for the sake of the Republicans.

  96. Marie says:

Senator Reid: You are not helpful to me. You are not helpful to Democrats of America.

Yesterday I received a call from the DSCC asking for a donation. I will parapahrase what I told the caller, “if I had money to donate I would not do so, because some of those dollars would go to Evan Bayh’s group, who, while they claim they have “no agenda,” have clearly stated their plans to oppose Obama.
I have no money to donate because my family is negatively affected by the George Bush economy.
I support the president and his proposals, policies and programs, and I want him to have time to put them into place; whether or not they will be effective will be determined later. I have no sympathy nor will I support, in amy way, the intraparty opposition”.

  97. wags camponotus saundersi says:

He’s praying for his response, give ‘em a minute.

He must not be trying hard enough. Maybe he needs to sacrifice some kind of livestock for it to work.

  98. Marie says:

For most of the Bush term, when we spoke out against the administration’s drastic and disastrous policies, we were essentially told to sit down and hut up, it would all work out in the end and we were not being helpful, because we were in the minority and needed to be supportive and bipartisan.

I won’t tolerate the same response from a fellow Democrat while we have a Democratic majority.

Either that or my talents as a ceratopogonidae must be working!
Hmm. Not a bad choice after all.

  100. buzzbomb says:

Reid is a spineless wimp who can F#ck off with the rest of the obstructionist “moderates”. I’ve hated Reid because of his limpdicked response to Bush policies over the years, but this takes the cake.

  101. pastcaring ceratopogonidae says:

Either that or he’s ripping pages trying to find a response that will just decimate us.

  102. Kryptik says:

For most of the Bush term, when we spoke out against the administration’s drastic and disastrous policies, we were essentially told to sit down and hut up, it would all work out in the end and we were not being helpful, because we were in the minority and needed to be supportive and bipartisan.

I won’t tolerate the same response from a fellow Democrat while we have a Democratic majority.

The stark irony here is that it’s still pointing the same way it was under Bush: we’re told we have to sit down, shut up, and cater to Republican’s wants and needs, and if we don’t, we’re being prissy ‘purity trolls’. The only difference here being that we’re being told this now by a group of splinter dems who seemed to have split off solely to make sure Dems have to keep catering to Republicans.

  103. wags camponotus saundersi says:

I’m sure it will amount to something like:

Corinthians 3:24 – And the Lord sayeth “NO U”.

  104. Marie says:

    kryptik, that is the fact.
It was unacceptable when we were in the minority, and it is unacceptable today.
Repugs are still in control, even when they are not.
Reid has to hear from us.

  105. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

Daryll, I suspect you are still lurking, hiding in the dark shadows as a Christian Pharisee would be expected to do. I warned you that if you showed up and I was around that I would oppose you with zeal. I am self-employed, with a variable schedule. You will never know when I am here if you show up without facts, logic, and reason to support what you post or if you attempt to bring your pseudoChristianity to bear on political issues.

  106. 5th Estate says:

    Senator Reid:

Donate the expense of your health-care, per diem allowance and and other long term benefits, and the automatic 4700-dollar raise you just received from your constituents to help them, and then we can talk about who is helping whom.

Otherwise piss-off,and enjoy your impending unemployment, you pontificating sanctimonious empty suit! Every else I know and respect here at TP could do your ‘job’, practically and politically, better than you.

  107. Marie says:

Well, I feel a wee bit better, I just telephoned Reid’s office and gave his staff person my opinion.

  108. wags camponotus saundersi says:

    RaptureReady Says:

Truckload of non-facts, personal opinions, gross generalizations and outright lies.

Lying is a sin, Daryll. Better get your house in order.

  109. Marie says:

Who is this raptureready idiot, and how did he get here?

  110. pastcaring ceratopogonidae says:

    #116 RaptureReady Says:

    Your insight is….
blindingly stupid and inacurate and unsurprising.

  111. Brittanicus says:

Illuminate these Senators names on every billboard across the United States. These should be recorded and go down in history along with traitor Benedict Arnold.

Don’t let these lawmakers distract you from major issues, such as E-Verify and imminent AMNESTY?
They are the ones who sold out American Workers by stamping out the federal E-Verify, to identify millions of ILLEGAL ALIENS IN THE WORKPLACE. With 10 million American jobless, these legislators left the door open for foreign labor. REMEMBER THEIR NAMES IN THE NEAR FUTURE. THEY REMOVED IT FROM THE STIMULUS/ OMNIBUS SPENDING BILL

    “because I am his child.”

Why don’t you try growing up… and with a little less blasphemy?

  113. wags camponotus saundersi says:

Why don’t you try growing up… and with a little less blasphemy?

    Then he’d have no schtick…

  114. 666cicadas says:

    RaptureReady Says:

“refuses to here constructive reasoning from the opposing party.”

We can’t hear what’s not being said. Name one Republican criticsm of Obama that didn’t also apply to Bush.

  115. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

cRapture Ready (and his gestating elephant) Says:
Dictatorship: President Giggles and his clown force ensuring that all programs are overtaken by Government. President Giggles and his clown force refuses to here constructive reasoning from the opposing party.

Finally, something Parodyll and I can agree upon. Bush was a clown, surrounding by other clowns to ensure all programs were taken over by Republican governing ideas. They refused to hear constructive reasoning from the Democratic party.
    One question:
When did you start referring to Bush as “giggles”?

  116. Marie says:

    I missed something people:
Can someone tell me what’s with the insects in the names?

  117. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

    Marie,
Bill O’rally referred to ThingProgress as a blog full on “insects”. Thus, we’ve changed our “nicknames” to represent said label!

  118. speshuled67 says:

HARRY REID IS PISSED!!!! i think…

i know he’s not a fire-brand, but harry, COME ON

  119. Junius Brutus says:

Someone should start a D.C. chapter of Pussies Anonymous and invite Harry Reid to be a charter member:

Hi, I’m Harry Reid and I am a big fat pussy.

  120. SHRED says:

GOD DAMN IT what pathetic little twerp Reid is.

How much longer can our country takes this RW tilt?

  121. po says:

Yes, let’s coddle the little conservative democrats and give them back their position of influence because criticism will just lead them to vote out of revenge, not the public interest. Great argument there. I think we should all cave to this extortion.

  122. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

Daryll, those are not definitions. You basically just said that liberals are… If you gave answers like that on a civics test, you would fail. If you gave answers like that on an intelligence test, you would… Never mind.

You might want to check on which party is in favor of protectionism, for starters.

  123. Yankeluh says:

Harry Reid was a boxer, hunh? Then he should have used some head protection because he is brain dead. We need to dump this gutless bastard and get a leader that will kick some ass and get this party in line. Tom Delay was a crook, but he could keep the republicans in line. Where are the old statesmen who realized that the Democratic Party stands for the people of this country and not for business. All of these damn democrats that ran on Obama’s coattails and now are stabbing him AND US in the back. I am sick of them. No more donations to the democratic party committees until the leadership shows some guts.

  124. kuvasz says:

Well maybe, Senator Reid it is not the Democratic Caucus that needs helping.

  125. Marie says:

    DRxJapanese Beetle

    Thanks!
A piece of good news that UPS dropped O’Lielly.

  126. Rodeskawler says:

How dare anyone stand in the way of Sand Dune Harry and his favorite hiding place for his head?

In case Harry and the other millionaire’s in the legislature haven’t figured it out, we voted for real change and real reforms.

Americans have the right to be disappointed when fake Democrats finally expose themselves, especially when we worked so hard to give this goober the majority he claimed he would use to bring about changes.

It’s not just time for new Democratic leadership. It is time for real Democratic leadership. This goes for NAFTA Nancy too.

  127. curious says:

Maddow is correct. It will give the Republicans more power to ruin again what they have already ruined. And Bayh will be helping them. The Democrats are so used to bending over and taking it, they can hardly wait to do it again. Habit is difficult to break.

Progressives will end up shooting themselves in the foot. And the rest of us as well. They are so accustomed to thinking in Republican terms they have forgotten to be liberals. LIBERAL. LIBERAL. Look how impressive the Republicans have been. Look what they have left behind. By all means business as usual.

  128. Tim43 says:

Smartest thing that I have ever heard Reed say.

  129. AlexLawyer says:

Reid is right! We owe it to the Wall Street bankers and weapons manufacturers to continue Bush’s major policies; Obama and the majority of congressional democrats are serving up the same old sour, toxic wine in stylish new bottles with appealing labels. That’s change we can believe in, isn’t it?

  130. flight says:

The Democratic Party is big enough to hold the Blue Dogs under the same party umbrella. Reid and company will have to accomidate and that is the way the system works best. The Bush Republicans would never allow this. I don’t want to see the Democrats make the same mistake. Look where the country is right know!

  131. dbearton says:

Like the RepubliCons and DINOS, it is time for Reid to go.

  132. EugeneDebs says:

RupturedRetard says something utterly stupid as usual. RR look into some adult education. Your stupidity about communism is inane, pointless and has nothing to do with the healthcare issue. MOST of the industrial world has nationalized healthcare and very FEW of them are anywhere near communist. You are stupid RR. Why bother to come here just to prove how stupid you are day after day. We already know what a moron you are.

  133. EugeneDebs says:

    gopny Says:

at least theres one demento demo with an intact brain.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Well there certainly ARENT any conservoTARDS with a functional brain much less an intact one. You are nothing but an ignorant brainwashed troll. Stupid, brainwashed and without a single shred of decency. Go sit in the corner and STFU

  134. EugeneDebs says:

    gopny Says:

bayh , one of the three sane blue dog demos, come on over to us, baby, you know you want to be a republican.! dont fight it!
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

No he doesnt. The lobotomy it would take for morons like YOU to make sense just isnt that attractive.

  135. hillary1 says:

I’ve been a Democrat all my life, but one of the charges leveled against us over the years is blatantly true: we are a party of wimps.

There’s consensus, and then there’s capitulation. God forbid anybody get mad at us or anything.

  136. hillary1 says:

Eugene, just ignore the trolls. Everytime you respond to them, you’re playing into their hands.

  137. hillary1 says:

Oh, and btw, Harry Reid is absolutely useless. Is there NO ONE ELSE with better leadership qualities to assume this post?

  138. Saty13 says:

The formation of a group of “renegade” Democrats is evidence that “corporatists” have realized that they won’t be able to maintain as strong an ownership stake of our government or further advance their greedy corporate agenda if they continue to rely heavily on the discredited Republican Party.

For Corporations to continue to have their way with the American people, Democrats must be more forcefully ambushed, manipulated, blackmailed – whatever it takes. The Democrats in this group must be the easiest to bribe.

  139. Bush_is_a_Moron says:

Harry Reid, you’re a spineless fcuk. As for Evan Bayh {{spit}}, I just can’t find the words to describe my loathing of that cretin. Even the flea on my dog’s @ss has much bigger balls than him. When are the people of Indiana going to flush this big brown lump down the crapper where he belongs? If they aren’t going to do it, then we as dems need to find a way to rid the party of this cockroach.

  140. sacopenapa says:

Reid, get your head inside a Congressional Toilet and flush it!
