South Carolina unemployment surges to 11 percent.

Unemployment in South Carolina reached 11 percent in February, a “dramatic increase from January’s 10.3 percent.” Five counties in the state face more than 20 percent unemployment, with the highest, Allendale County, at 23.4 percent. Even as he is being warned about enusing “chaos,” Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) continues his efforts to block $700 million in federal stimulus aid to the state, a move that could result in at least 4,700 teachers and prison guards being laid off.

Can’t they remove this thunder-turd from office for imperiling the public welfare?

  3. Chris LeJeune says:

And yet the state will love him for it and continue to vote republican. He just has to tell them that it’s the Mexicans fault that they don’t have jobs, that the unions are to blame, and that Obama is a Muslim. Then promise to stop the gays. They’ll line up to donate their unemployment checks to the RNC.

This is what hapens when you vote for anti-union, pro big-business Repugs. I feel sorry for Democrats who live down South.

And yet many in these States like South Carolina with high unemployment rates will most likely blame this all on President Obama and the democrats in 2010 & 2012. Is this another strategic plan designed by the pro-business republicans and their corporate puppet masters?

    So?
In Michigan, the OFFICIAL unemployment is 12%.
    Unofficially, it’s probably twice that.

Yeah, but I didn’t hear anything about your Governor Granholm thumbing her nose at stimulus funding.

  15. paleolib says:

    Uncle Ho
Michigan’s governor isn’t trying to turn down her state’s share of the stimulus, SC’s is. Point taken on unemployment in the midwest. Good to see this region’s govs are generally acting more responsibly than those in the deep south.

  16. larkohio says:

Sandford is being cruel to the people he represents. How are they to eat and keep a roof over their heads? It is not the fault of the citizens of South Carolina that the stock market crashed, but it is their fault for voting this guy into power.

    An “orderly” revolution?

Is that a revolution where we don’t get our hair and lipstick mussed? Maybe punch in and out on timeclocks, and check our pitchforks and torches like library books?

    Yeesh…

joe, I though Shelley had already passed “crazier” some time ago.

She’s forcing us to either revise upward the term”crazy” (probably her intent) or come us with finer gradations in the scale.

    Any suggestions?

The people of SC need to recall Sanford’s ass.

He’s supposed to be acting in THEIR interests, but he’s only thinking about his 2012 presidential run. :P

  21. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

Governor Granholm has taken a lot of $hit lately, but at least she didn’t turn down her (our) share of the stimulus. I agree with Uncle Ho, I think the unofficial tally her in Michigan far exceeds 12%

But, 4700 teachers and prison guards laid off? Trolls (if there any today), please explain to me how this would benefit our economy?
Because even without the highly “criticized” stimulus, these layoffs were still going to happen.
    Anyone?
    Anyone?
    Buehler?

And North Carolina isn’t far behind. IBM (located here in Research Triangle Park) just laid off hundreds of people this week.

  27. Jackie says:

Stanford was voted in by the people it’s their choice to remove him. Each day more people are suffering as they are not getting the help from their own tax dollars. Obama is not Bush and will not be a Dictator but allow the people to have their Contitutional Rights of choice while continuing to offer help as they need it.

What a scoundrel! The people in SC need to protest – they’re not shouting loud enough against Sanford’s objection to receiving stimulus money.

  40. wiley says:

If the reported unemployment rate is 20% in some counties, the actual rate must be at least 25%. What misery.

  41. Uncle Ho says:

To clear up any possible misunderstanding, I did not intend to slight unemployed people in South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio, or ANYWHERE.

To lose your job through no fault of your own is a tragedy anywhere. The doors of businesses are shutting and people are out of work, and finding any job is difficult.

A friend of mine has worked in an automotive parts supplier for 36 years and as of March 6th, unemployed because the place folded. She will get 26 weeks of unemployment benefits, perhaps 1-2 extensions at 13 weeks, but after that, ?
She is three years short of being able to draw ss. I have no answers for her. Unemployment in the Port Huron/St Clair County area is .20%.

  42. Uncle Ho says:

    should be >20%.

  43. NOLIESPLEASE says:

To all unemployed….GROW POT! Canada has a 2billion dollar undergroud pot economy.

Towns in California are growing…they are not going to starve because of the stupidity of the rich bastards (Repugs)who raped the middle class for the last 30years.

Really think about it….how many laws have the republicans enacted to better corporations and how many laws did they provide to protect and better the lives of the middle class.

PLEASE SOMEONE LIST THEM FOR ME….WHAT LAWS HAVE THE REPUBLICANS ENACTED TO PROVIDE A BETTER LIFE FOR THE MIDDLE CLASS????

  45. curious says:

Sanford has his job, so he doesn’t care about anyone else. And this constituents are so dumb they might vote him back in. What they should be doing is having a RECALL VOTE.

This Republican posturing and sudden march to frugality is amazing. Especially when things are so bad in that state. The Republican party still have not figured out why they lost. They still act as if it never happened and things are just the same. By the time they catch on, the unemployment rate in SC might be even worse. People continue to vote against their own interests. Party first. So let them sink.

I’ve got it! From now on, when we go past crazy, we’ll spell it “crazee”. As more degrees of crazy are added, we add more e’s to the word (i.e., “Did you hear what she said today? Man, she’s crazeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”). That should take care of it. XoD

  48. dbearton says:

Looks like the Criminal Bush took a dump on the people of South Carolina. Now their RepubliCon Governor, Sanford, is going to take his turn. The RepubliCons are sure turning South Carolina into an outhouse.

Keep practicing the republican policy of “just saying no” governor, and see how long you last at your present position.

Look around you fool your people are hurting.

Your were hired by these people to help them, and you turn your back on them for your and your parties political ambitions.

    SHAME SHAME SHAME

  52. Scottsdalian says:

Obama should give Sanford a deadline…like one week…and then, if Sanford still opposes, Obama should re-distribute those SC funds to other states that are willing to help their own unemployed.

Let Sanford ’splain himself to his SC constituents after he loses the money. Maybe the SC voters will remember come the next election. Until then…you made your own beds, now sleep in them.

Sorry to be so harsh, but Obama must not beg any govenor to take the stimulus funds – that only empowers those stupidshit govenors.
