Earlier this month, former vice president Cheney told CNN that President Obama is “making some choices that…raise the risk to the American people of another attack,” referring to Obama’s decisions to close Guantanamo and end torture. Today on CNN’s State of the Union, Centcom Commander Gen. David Petraeus — whom Cheney has previously called “extraordinarily capable” — said he doesn’t agree with Cheney’s assessment:
PETRAEUS: Well, I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that. I think in fact that there is a good debate going on about the importance of values in all that we do. I think that if one violates the values that we hold so dear, that we jeopardize. … We think for the military, in particular that camp, that’s a line [torture] that can’t be crossed.
“It is hugely significant to us to live the values that we hold so dear and that we have fought so hard to protect over the years,” he concluded. Watch it:
Petraeus: I don’t agree with Cheney that Obama has made the country more unsafe.
– - Mo man is an island. Well, except for Dick Cheeeney.
March 29th, 2009 at 11:57 amUmmm, No man…
March 29th, 2009 at 11:57 amNOW, you tell us…
You have crossed the line of ethics yourself, me thinks.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:00 pmWow, a general saying it’s not a good thing to commit war crimes. I guess it is an improvement. Now, lets get on with the prosecutions.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:06 pmHmm… Interesting
Gen. David Petraeus comments are correct but what I think is more interesting is, now that this topic will be relevant again.
Will Republicans fall in the trap and defend Dick Chaney or will they wise up and tell him to STFU.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:10 pmReliance on violence and “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” blows back on the U.S.
Al Qaeda arose from America’s tampering in Afghanistan. Their beef is U.S. troops in the Middle East.
What will come from Iraq? Already one Awakening Council turned arms on the Iraqi government. When will they want revenge on the U.S.?
We’ve heard the story before. How badly will it express next time?
March 29th, 2009 at 12:36 pmC’mon Petraeus. You kissed Dick Chenny’s ass while he was running the white house. Nothing has changed except your desire to promote your own legacy.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:36 pmHo Hum.
Beefeater,
I think Gen. Petraeus has about the Most Secure Job in America.
He did, however, hedge his remarks…he said…
“Well, I wouldn’t NECESSARILY agree with that”.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:39 pmI didn’t see the TP vid.,is that the interview where John King had his face in Petraeus crotch and blamed Dems. for not supporting the Surge?
March 29th, 2009 at 12:44 pmI guess mark one for Obama… Cheney, you’re wrong.

Beefeater didnt Moveon get in trouble with that. Typical right wing moronic, “if you dont agree with us your against us” bull
March 29th, 2009 at 12:48 pmBadger Says:
“Well, I wouldn’t NECESSARILY agree with that”.
Yeah, I was going to comment on those weasel words, but TP directly quotes him saying something slightly different.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:48 pmhey Beetfeeder, I think you can get a good deal on some left over Betraeus material over at MoveOn.org
https://pol.moveon.org/petraeus.html
March 29th, 2009 at 12:49 pmDeadeye Dick is becoming more and more irrelevant by the day. Unfortunately, 08Dariana, nobody in the GOOP has enough stones to tell him to STFU, not that he’d listen, anyway. He thinks that he’s still running the U.S. government.
March 29th, 2009 at 12:56 pmBeefeater Says:
I’m shocked, shocked I say, that Betraeus would hold to the new company line. It’s not like he wants to keep his job or anything!
I’m shocked, shocked I say, that a moronic troll would throw a patriot under the tank simply because he didn’t toe the line on reich wing propaganda, once. It’s almost like you can’t think for yourself if you’re a right wing stooge or something.
Does anyone else remember Tanquary? It was a similar gin soaked troll with no brains, game, or common sense…
March 29th, 2009 at 1:04 pmif one violates the values that we hold so dear…
…hence, the problem, Republicans have no values, morals or ethics except to their party and them selves.
March 29th, 2009 at 1:07 pmI’ll bet Cheney will on some network newshow (maybe Fake News this time) trying to clean up what Gen. Petraeus said. Just about everything Cheney says is always the opposite of the truth. I’m just trying to be patient and wait for the prosecutions to begin.
March 29th, 2009 at 1:13 pmOnly traitors think Obama has made America less safe.
March 29th, 2009 at 1:14 pmWhile I appreciate Petraeus’ words today, I cannot give him too much credit because I recall too well how he supported the warmongering Bush/Cheney cabal in their illegal war and their torturous methods.
March 29th, 2009 at 1:25 pmThat’s the trouble with being a career general officer in the military. They must constantly shift their opinion to line up with the administration du jour. It’s the only way to guarantee their promotions. Go Along To Get Along. Just look what happened during the last misadministration to Shinseki and the other career officers who dared to go against President Chen–, I mean, Bush. They were gone before their mouths could close behind their disagreements.
March 29th, 2009 at 2:14 pmCheney is evil. Why is he still roaming free?
March 29th, 2009 at 2:23 pmI just CAN’T bring myself to trust this guy. His words mean nothing to me. He was instrumental in helping Bush/Cheney sell this war in the final years of their reign of terror.
March 29th, 2009 at 2:31 pmBeefeater Says:
How can you call Gen. Petraeus “Betraeus” when he was only speaking the truth? Cheney betrayed us all. Bush betrayed us all! Bush and Cheeeeney have no ownership of any bad decisions that were made under their administration. Make sure you put that label on the correct person(s)!
March 29th, 2009 at 3:09 pm(groan)
Petraeus is above reproach. The man is a 35yr veteran of the armed forces…he serves his country, regardless of the commander in chief.
It wasn’t his decision to send troops into Iraq. Focus your justified rage on the chickenhawk politicians that start wars, not the soldiers that fight them.
March 29th, 2009 at 3:17 pmThe military was never comfortable with the Bush torture doctrine. From Powell down, the consensus had always this policy spelled real trouble for our own troops. This was a civilian policy passed down by elected officals, with a legalized justification, the militaries’ hands were tied. The Obama adminstration correctly reaffirmed the longstanding consensus that no form of torture is acceptable, and to their credit. I believe today’s statement was a long time in coming
March 29th, 2009 at 3:20 pmfor PETRAEUS and the military. I hope our military leaders remember this dark chapter in this countries history.
Bush/Cheney have a lot to answer for in the up coming years in the court of public opinion. No politican is going to make their case.
.
Hehehe…
… Centcom Commander Gen. David Petraeus isn’t afraid of Assassin Cheney.
.
March 29th, 2009 at 3:25 pmBeefeater Says:
I am shocked that a moronic troll just said something else worthless and stupid.
March 29th, 2009 at 3:52 pmFlight, Petreaus’ hands were not tied. He had his 20 years in. He could have shown his displeasure with Bush/Cheney by submitting his retirement papers. Perhaps, if the Joint Chiefs had grown a pair and stood up to the chickenhawk neo-CONS the nation wouldn’t have to face this humiliating situation. After all, Bush couldn’t fire his entire cadre of military “advisers”.
March 29th, 2009 at 4:11 pmGood lord, how could anyone ask such a question ? Does anyone think that commander Petraeus would publicaly second guess the decisions of his CIC !
And since you brought up the betraeus episode, I would have to agree with Mark Shields, who said at the time, that people
March 29th, 2009 at 5:41 pmdetest making fun of someones name, especially a respected military hero.
We think for the military, in particular that camp, that’s a line [torture] that can’t be crossed.
So Betrayus, where was your voice when Bush/Cheney were crossing that line?
March 29th, 2009 at 5:46 pmBeefeater Says:
I’m shocked, shocked I say, that Betraeus would hold to the new company line. It’s not like he wants to keep his job or anything!
So you are saying that Betrayus would say or do anything to keep his job, no matter what his morals and ethics told him? What does that say about him as a person and as a so-called leader of men?
March 29th, 2009 at 5:50 pmEnnuiDivine Says:
Petraeus is above reproach. The man is a 35yr veteran of the armed forces…he serves his country, regardless of the commander in chief.
Petraeus is NOT above reproach. He actively campaigned for George Bush while in uniform which is a violation of the military code.
March 29th, 2009 at 5:52 pmMarie Says:
While I appreciate Petraeus’ words today, I cannot give him too much credit because I recall too well how he supported the warmongering Bush/Cheney cabal in their illegal war and their torturous methods.
He not only supported them, he also actively helped them sell the warmongering, which is how he got the name “Betrayus”.
March 29th, 2009 at 5:53 pmfergus, I could agree with you more. That would have been the outstanding thing to do. I believe the Iraq war was disastrous due to the civilian command (war leader Bush).
The military had little control at the beginning. When it became clear the civilian policies were failing, the military leaders were called upon. I don’t think leaving was an option for Petreaus and we should be thankful he stayed. The Bush administration has placed a lot of good people in some very bad moral dilemmas. Petreaus is one of the last standing. I don’t think it is easy when all your choices
really suck. I will give him the benifit of the doubt for now.
humbley flight
March 29th, 2009 at 5:55 pmBilbo,
March 29th, 2009 at 6:06 pmI agree. I am amused by the indignant comments here about making fun of someone’s name — like trolls have not made a campaign out of trashing Obama’s name.
Petraeus earned his nickname because of his statements; Obama was given his nickname because his mother named him after his father.
Beefeater Says:

I’m shocked, shocked I say, that Betraeus would hold to the new company line. It’s not like he wants to keep his job or anything!————————————————————-
Beef, would you care to explain how General Petraeus betrayed us?…Or are you just following the “company line” without any actual facts?
March 29th, 2009 at 8:45 pmThis is disturbing. How long do you think it will take for Petraeus to get an invitation to go hunting with Cheney?
March 29th, 2009 at 8:49 pmHeheheheh – nice of the good general to toss ol’ Dick under the bus. No honor among thieves, eh?
March 29th, 2009 at 10:46 pmThe General, the darling of the neocons will be thrown under the bus now. Getting awfully thin over there in neoconville, isn’t it?
March 29th, 2009 at 11:03 pmWho cares what Dick Shameless has to say anyway?

March 30th, 2009 at 9:24 amThe General Betrayed us is trying to cover his ass, nothing more.
March 30th, 2009 at 9:24 amWhen it comes to Cheney being prosecuted for war crimes unfortunatly we wont see that happen. Not only does he not have a heart but the guy had about five heart attacks. How much more can it take.
March 30th, 2009 at 11:59 amPetraeus has to say this if he wants to keep his pension and not get taxed at 90 percent. Petraeus has forgotten more about the correct way to conduct battle than the Chosen One will ever know
March 30th, 2009 at 1:34 pmCheney should not challenge Obama’s positions relative to national security.
Cheney had incessantly lied about matters related to national security.
Cheney has no credibility.
Cheney needs to be incarcerated.
