Bill O’Reilly Scheduled To Appear On The View And Letterman This Week
We have good opportunities to keep the heat on Bill O’Reilly this coming week. On Monday, he is scheduled to appear on ABC’s The View:
We can’t imagine that O’Reilly’s insensitive comments about the rape and murder of 18-year old Jennifer Moore — and his subsequent stalking of Amanda Terkel — would go over well with The View’s audience. (You can email The View here.)
Then on Tuesday, O’Reilly is scheduled to appear as a guest on David Letterman’s show. (You can contact Letterman’s show by emailing cbsmailbag@aol.com):
O’Reilly has never explained his comments about the rape and murder of Moore, nor has he explained why he thinks it was appropriate to stalk Amanda for two hours while she was on vacation.
O’Reilly needs to be held accountable for his “ambush journalism,” which is an effort to target, harasses, and intimidate his opponents. O’Reilly’s producers have also accosted approximately 40 other victims. Last week, O’Reilly said on his show that Amanda was “certainly a villain” and referred to all of us at ThinkProgress as “insects.”

He can’t why he blamed a young woman for her own murder, he can’t excuse or explain his treatment Terkel other than to accuse her of being a “villain”, “smear merchant” and “tool of the left-wing cabal”. He’s got no argument, only vitriol – but he will I assure you try and pretty up his image with this little media blitz.
It probably won’t work for those who already dislike him, but for his base – it’ll be like pablum.

Now then, regarding our penchant for extortion and character assassination … I’m sure you have some examples to share? AFter all, the blog itself does detail Bill’s “alleged” transgression so one can not really accuse us of making it up.

Dave should ask O’Reilly (and feel free to include these and other questions in your e-mails to Dave):
Did you extend an invitation to Amanda Terkel to appear on your show?
If so, when? If not, why not?
Why did you send two goons (use that word) in a van to follow her? Did they try ringing her doorbell to see if she was home? Did they try to catch up with her when she first emerged from her home? Why did they follow her for two hours across state lines?
Has he made (or will he make) the entire interview available on line, or will viewers only get to see what little he showed in his TV program?
Do you think women who get raped and murdered do so because of the way they dress?
Do you think that children who are abducted and sexually abused enjoy having that done to them?
I’m sure there are more answers we would like, but I’d like to hear Bill-O answer those questions.

For News Corp. (NWS) Chief Executive Rupert Murdoch, all of the news lately has been bad.
Investors are growing tired of Murdoch. His $5 billion purchase of Dow Jones & Co. was not about creating shareholder value. It was about gaining political influence. The offer to the Bancroft family, which largely stopped caring about Dow Jones generations ago, was so off the charts that they would have been insane to turn him down. Since then, News Corp has been working feverishly to cut costs through layoffs.
Shares of New York-based News Corp are down 32 percent this year, under-performing rivals including Time Warner Inc. (TWX) and Viacom Inc. (VIA). The reason for investor unease is simple: Murdoch is still in love with the moribund newspaper business. Add to that his strained relationship with his children and the fact that though there are shareholders, News Corp remains a family business.

We’re driving people into the arms of O’Really? Funny—my concern for people who are driven into the arms of O’Really over this incident is the same as the concern I have for the disabled. I nearly quit working for a disabled woman who had Fox news blaring during the “Countdown to Iraq”, or whatever that vulgar war-mongering episode was called. She was bitter and angry almost all of the time. She was evangelical. She couldn’t wait for the world to be destroyed, and she wanted all Arabs to be destroyed with nukes first.
I liked her, but I can’t help but thinking she would have been happier if she didn’t watch Fox news. I didn’t have to quit because she died of a stroke in her sleep after having a pleasant evening watching the Superbowl. I’m glad she had a good night and didn’t die with O’Really railing on at about 50 decibels in the background. It saddens to think that with the demographic of his audience, that a lot of people who have managed to live into their seventies and eighties might die with O’Really ranting in the background instead of loved ones in the foreground and the television blissfully OFF.

NBC is THE NEMESIS, so no fresh bold and steaming pieces of Bill O’Reilly’s ‘humanity’ for them to help their ratings by his presence, no SIR!
Just as Jim Cramer felt he had to do quick PR tour in light of Jon Stewart’s, so to does Bill. Their own Bully pulpits don;t provide enough comfort or strength–in other words Bill is worried, like Cramer was.
The View is a smart choice because its a highly-rated women’s show.
Letterman is a smart choice being also a ratings leader in its time slot.
And, Bill O needs face up to a broader and more diverse viewership/audience and quite unfriendly hosts.
Which also means he’s feeling the pressure.
It will all depend on who the hosts address him and how he responds. He’s going to try to be charming and appear very reasonable—he’s done it before.
It should be interesting.

Thank you for making another point. I have heard O’Reilly’s comment about Ms Moore and while I think it ill advised, I, and probably 90% of the rest of those that heard it, don’t think for one second he was advocating rape. In the military, they taught me how to be aware of my surroundings and not place myself in a bad situation. Does that mean if I did place myself in a bad situation I deserved to get shot? No, but the reality is, it could happen. The first thing you learn in ANY self defense class is how NOT to put yourself in a situation that compromises your safety…its called common sense and I believe that was Bill0’s point. But you kids keep twisting it any way you want to and further deminish the seriousness of the crime. One woman that was brutally raped has already suffered as a result of your irresponsible tactics. What Ms. Terkel did was wrong. I saw her interview; she says now that she was ambushed by Fox, because she did such a poor job of defending her actions.

We can’t say for sure that she would still be alive today had she not been on that street. Had the car not been towed, her friend might have driven drunk, wrecked and killed them both. But chances are good that the murderer who happened upon her on that street would not have come to her house to rape and kill her since there is no indication that he knew her and targeted her. Following your reasoning, the police are wasting their time telling women to avoid being out alone late at night and to be aware of their surroundings to make themselves less likely to become victims. For some reason, you seem to think that I supported young women dressing provocatively and getting drunk on Manhattan streets.
This is odd, since I simply pointed out that, as you say, the young woman’s choices may have contributed to her rape and murder, and O’Reilly chose to focus on those factors rather than on the more compelling, and definite cause — that a rapist chose to attack her.
That was basically my reasoning, and I don’t see anything either there or in my original comment that might lead a reasonable person to conclude that, Following (my) reasoning, the police are wasting their time telling women to avoid being out alone late at night and to be aware of their surroundings to make themselves less likely to become victims.
