Virginia legislature passes bill restricting state funds for embryonic stem cell research.

The Virginia politics blog Not Larry Sabato notes that Virginia’s GOP-led House of Delegates and Democratic-controlled Senate passed a bill earlier this month that prevents the state’s Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund from financing research involving embryonic stem cells. From the text of the bill:

3. That no award from the Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund may be provided if the otherwise qualified business performs research in Virginia on human cells or tissue derived from induced abortions or from stem cells obtained from human embryos, nor shall any award from the Fund be used for such research. The foregoing provision shall not apply to research conducted using stem cells other than embryonic stem cells.

4. That no investment shall be qualified pursuant to § 58.1-339.4 of the Code of Virginia if the otherwise qualified business performs research in Virginia on human cells or tissue derived from induced abortions or from stem cells obtained from human embryos. The foregoing provision shall not apply to research conducted using stem cells other than embryonic stem cells.

Another Virgina blog writes, “We have a short time to make [Gov.] Tim Kaine [D] realize his stance is wrong, and he needs to line item veto Article G paragraphs 3 and 4 in this legislation.”

At least they can continue to experiment with their sperm cells without any Government intrusion, in the back shed, with Uncle Ted…

    Stem Cell Research Living Will

I hereby certify that neither I, nor any member of my family, including but not limited to: children, grandchildren, cats, dogs, etc. and any “after acquired” family will never, ever, under any circumstances (even with my fingers crossed) take or ingest any form of drug treatment or medical breakthroughs that are in any way associated with or connected to Stem Cell research. I am morally opposed to this type of medical malfeasance that our lord and Savior and Dr. Dobson most assuredly rebuke. I declare that I am of sound mind and body (as so it is hence with respect to the aforementioned family members) as we execute this irrevocable document and thusly said, this document shall not be challenged in a court of law. This is so despite the fact that I or said parties, would either now or in the future, be the beneficial recipient of such a repugnant life enhancing treatment . Only the Devil’s greatest tool, i.e. “temptation” could lead us into sinful thoughts of partaking of this reprehensible policy.

No, “Deliverance” was not filmed in Virginia, but you wouldn’t know it from some of the legislation that gets passed…

No problem. Let’s not call them “embryonic” stem cells anymore. How about we call them Xe stem cells?

If some states want to continue in the 16th century – I could care less. That just means more potential business/new jobs/tax revenues for states that are welcoming innovation.

  7. Mr. Evil says:

Why do we continue to be controlled by elected officials that turn out to be nothing more than backward hicks and oafish buffoons? And they aren’t limited to just the Virginia legislature. This is another example that they do not care about human suffering. They only care about all the free corporate money they receive for being good little whores for the super-elites. The politicians in this country are basically indifferent, selfish and callous.

In other words, unless Obama grovels at the feet of the repugniscum, he is not being bipartisan.

John King is a tool at CNN whom I have complained about pretty regularly to CNN mgt.

Amen Cpairs, if Virgina disagrees with the rest of us I invite them to do whatever they feel necessary to continue living in the past. The more states the better, I know Washington is going to hit the ground running in our universities, anything to put us above others is always a plus.

I see the ethics of tossing embryos out in the trash wins out.
    Talk about Right to Life…
… How about the Right to Life in helping people live fulfilling lives?

That’s like tossing out a perfectly good heart because the donor is going to be cremated…
    … What about the recipient?

I personally like the idea of calling ‘em “Pre-Born Christians,” and then peeing in the petri dishes before dumping ‘em…

C’mon guys you know that for wingers, the right to life ends after birth.

They only want the embryos to survive so they can get cannon fodder for more illegal wars.

Come on, gang — as I remind you frequently, don’t lump all of us Virginians in with the unenlightened…

We’re working hard to remind our state legislators that we’re no longer a hard red state, but some of them are forgetting. But trust me, this too shall pass; the legislature of our Commonwealth does not represent the thinking of the majority of our citizens, and we’ll have another chance to fix it later this year during our state elections…

Biotech was to have been America’s growth industry. Bush stifled it in favor of financial innovation.

Those Virginia State legislators will need to keep subsidizing MCV and the nearby biotech incubation project.

Sorry to have offended you, but Virginia seems to be the home of many backward thinking persons — you have my sympathy and support in your efforts to educate them.
