Think Progress

O’Reilly smears ThinkProgress once again, claims we attacked a rape victim and her family.

Yesterday on The Factor, Bill O’Reilly addressed ThinkProgress in his “Reality Check” portion of the show, “a segment set up to defeat deceit.” And of course, O’Reilly proceeded to peddle deceit, claiming that “far left zealots…attacked a rape victim and her family because they asked me to speak at their fundraiser.” Wrong. We never attacked the Alexa Foundation; we simply highlighted quotes from O’Reilly that were unsympathetic towards a rape victim. O’Reilly has never explained why he implied that women who dress in a certain way or consume too much alcohol should perhaps expect to be raped and murdered. Watch last night’s segment.

O’Reilly also fumed at UPS’s recent decision to stop advertising on The Factor. “Disappointingly, the UPS corporation helped” ThinkProgress “in their evil deed,” O’Reilly whined. “Check is quite surprised. UPS needs to wise up fast.” Or what Bill? Will they be stalked, ambushed, and harassed by your henchmen as well? Please join our campaign.

Methinks the lady doth protest too much.

  2. stateofthedivision says:

The story was a nonstory to begin with. The Alexa Foundation never shared their concern.

Now it’s a joke to people who expect real journalism. It’s BillO in a brightly lit room, fighting his shadow.

    Sad.

  3. Rich H says:

O’Rielly’s just a troll with a TV show.

  4. Brian Crooks says:

Shouldn’t there be some way for someone at TP to get ANY air time on Fox News? I mean, as much as they talk about you guys you would think they’d relish the opportunity to try to corner someone on the air.

Saw a UPS commercial while watching Keith last night. I’ve got some packages to send to family, and I’ll be shipping via UPS and telling them why!

“Far left” You keep using those words Billo, but I do not think you know what they mean.

  7. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

O’rally. Until you can explain your stance that a young male who was repeatedly molested and threatened, possibly enjoyed his captivity, you’ve got nothing!

Again, I say. Let’s dance! Instead of spouting off your opinions, let someone come on your show with a counterpoint.

And, as you’ve been documented saying, “We’ll do it live! We’ll DO IT FCKING LIVE!!!

  17. mk3872 says:

  18. Zooey Lepidoptera says:

    bhayden90,

Trolls: We can’t keep defending him, we got nothing please let it go PLEASE!!1111

  23. misscoleopteramolly says:

I suspect the reason Bill wants to keep this going is because he imagines it feeds his audience with righteous indignation (and therefore boosts his ratings). He hasn’t yet figured out that his audience is a stagnant pool of kool-aid drinkers. Nor has he figured out that the fact he has to make up lies for his bluster and that there’s very little else for him to rail at should be a clue that he’s gone past his sell-by date.

  24. bhayden90 says:

Maybe the TP folks who have been stalked and harassed can go to the courts or the police and deal with this jerk and TP can give us monthly updates on the issue. Or possibly TP can set up an independent site to track this “issue” on a daily basis and rally followers to support the efforts. BUT, using the TP site to track this on a semi-daily basis makes a very effective and very well respected site resemble a cyber tabloid.

  25. krdaddy says:

“listen UPS, you better wise up and sponser my show!”
    yeah…that should work

  26. MapleStreet says:

Let’s accept what O’Reilley said as true and then compare:

At most, TP criticized the Alexa Foundation (and featuring Bill-O was a rather questionable move on the foundation’s part)

Bill-O said Shawn Hornbeck liked it. And that another rape victim asked for it.

How do the scales balance ?

  27. joe cantwell says:

    ___________________________________________________________

Yep — you called it accurately. But I’d like to point out that the terms “far-left”, “hate” and “George Soros” are pretty much givens. Salt and pepper the rant with these and you’re halfway there.

  30. Purple State says:

This is exactly why I have disapproved of these “bullet-point” segments:

    1. Bill stretches the truth by stating they “attacked” the organization he spoke at, but he does not say how.
    2. Bill provides information on other organizations that have contributed to the It Happened To Alexa organization, but states that Zucker and Podesta have not. My question: have Podesta and Zucker’s groups contributed to other organizations sponsoring rape victims? If so, then this should be baseless, correct? You can support a cause without giving to EVERY outlet.
    3. Is Fox still smearing people by using altered photos of people? It almost looks like it in their photos of Zucker and Podesta.
    4. Bill provides no information on HOW UPS supported the cause.

You know, I was always told that arguments needed to be made with evidence, not bullet points. Teachers mark down for providing outlines and not actual reports, right?

  31. RantingTommy says:

silly billy got his panties in a bunch it seems

keep up the good work, TP

if it annoys the trolls, it HAS to be good for America

  32. Tweedster says:

Anyone posting on this thread to whine about the thread needs to find something else to complain about and not up the traffic on the thread. Maybe if you didn’t add you comments to the fray and tried to “boycott” these stories it would be more effective. At least it would be a more effective way to not be called a “whiner” or a “baby…”

  33. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

Bill O’Reilly refers to the ideological differences between progressives and the far-right conservatives as “culture war”. HE is going to fight on that basis. WE have to decide whether we are going to fight back or just let him and the other wingnut pundits beat on us regularly. I say fight. So, these threads exposing and debunking and mocking O’Reilly are one of the ways we can use the ammunition we have to fight. If you don’t agree, ignore these threads.

  34. Hoodathunktick says:

The whole purpose of this is to protest the actions of a purported news program and it’s host. The reason it has been effective is because of the consistent pressure from concerned citizens and posters who are tired of the MSM tactic of burying issues that are uncomfortable.

There is no reason for TP to provide a separate area because this topic is current and continuing. No one makes any visitor to TP click on any given topic. It is personal choice. Sort of like a channel changer and the little button labeled either Power or on/off.

There are two ways to ‘make this go away’. One is apathy. The other can be likened to the Tuna/dolphin business. If this company wants the public to ‘buy its tuna’, they best consider the dolphins.

  35. paz3 says:

O’Reilly had better be careful who he orders to wise up. UPS may be begin to question the entire Fox News Channel, and not just The Factor.

I believe that the decisive election of Obama, despite the charges of “socialist” and worse thrown at him indicate that people are growing tired of partisan rancor, and this may well bite a lot of conservative news outlets hard in the behind as time goes on.

These little bullies and ranters and truth-stretchers may be able to claim that FNC is the highest rated cable channel, but so what? The hard core right is increasingly isolating itself, and when you do the demograophics, they are not the future of this country, nor are they desirable consumers outside of the world of Wal*mart.

  36. bhayden90 says:

This “story” has 24 separate entries in the last 9 days. Perhaps 9, or one each day, would have been enough. That might be acceptable in an attempt to defend TP against this creep, but 24 entries smells an awful lot like an attempt by TP to drive up page views and publicity at the expense of many real issues of the day. It’s not just this particular thread, it’s taking over the whole site. On three separate days, there were 4 entries each. We don’t need silence on this issue, just stop beating us over the head with it.

  37. Hoodathunktick says:

Or more appropriately, if they don’t want to be bugged, don’t call us insects.

No offense, but I was never taught to “just take it” when sucker-punched.

As long as Loofah boy continues to misinform his viewing audience, TP will continue to post his nonsense.
(If you notice the little box on the right, the one that says “What We’re Fighting For”. Underneath it is another box which says “Media Accountability”. Not speaking for TP, but I’m pretty much sure every single thread dedicated to Falafel head falls under that category)

  76. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

Hard to believe anyone would object to activism on the part of Americans. Most progressives have been frustrated by the lack of journalistic integrity on the party of Fox News, and the failure of the media organizations to step in.

In the golden age of newspapers, they policed themselves when it came to journalistic integrity, and for the most part, they did a very good job. Times have changed and now it seems that tabloid journalism has become acceptable.

Now, thanks to the utter failure of journalistic integrity as displayed by Fox News, the people have awakened. We the people that actually want to read this thread, aren’t going to go away. We are like insects, as Bill O’Reilly accurately named us, and we are going to keep biting him until he “wises up”.

Why would TP want to put a lid on this? It’s issues exactly like this that attract progressive to Blogs. If we can expose each and every lie O’Reilly does, we will eventually discredit him so badly, even the wingnuts won’t believe what he says.

I don’t know about the shoe being on the other foot. No one here believes for a second that O’Reilly has somehow turned this around and magically fixed it. Far from it. This is just the opening salvo in a war against Fox News.

We really should thank O’Reilly for it was his style of right wing propaganda that awakened the American people. O’Reilly is the cement that gives the online progressive movement its strength. O’Reilly is more responsible, than any other individual person for motivating Americans to get involved online to defeat Republicans.

The fledgling internet democracy has been born and, for better or worse, it’s not going to go away because O’Reilly tries to blame his accusers for his indiscretion.

  89. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

The can of worms metaphor generally implies that it’s difficult to untangle, as opposed to being difficult to put the lid back on.

The “shoe on the other foot” metaphor would apply if O’Reilly had any evidence that TP did something inappropriate. I have not seen any such evidence.

I think a better metaphor here would be O’Reilly opening Pandora’s box.

  90. Hoodathunktick says:

Has anyone else noticed that none of the other pundits are rallying to Billo’s defense here? Just a handful of raggedy trolls. No solidarity from Sean or Rush or Ann?

Could it maybe be involved with Billo losing two sponsors (i.e. source of paycheck)?

Loyalty is obviously not a Republican trait. Sigh, just the poor insects.

  91. boudin says:

    I have two questions:

As Bilbo Hussein Baggins alluded, has Alexa, anyone from her family, or anyone from the Alexa foundation commented as to whether they think they were attacked by TP? One would think their opinions, and even more their feelings, would be paramount on this matter. I checked their web site and it does not appear to have been updated since before O’Reilly spoke.

Also, how much has Mr. O’Reilly contributed to the Alexa Foundation? Again, their web site is not up to date, but there is no O’Reilly listed among their supporters:
    http://www.ithappenedtoalexa.org/about4.html

  92. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

I think it would be some excellent journalism for TP to interview Alexa and others from the Alexa foundation, and as them their opinion on this subject, as well as what they think of Fox News.

  93. Hoodathunktick says:

Why has the Alexa Foundation been so quiet on this issue?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

It seems like any one of the news media should have interviewed somebody from the Alexa Foundation. Even a no comment would be something.

  101. MrBrown says:

This is what’s pissing me off these days, and probably will all week, with all of these shows he’s going on these people will not hold his feet to the fire for the things he’s saying and doing. They make him look too much like a nice guy to people who may not have cable and only network TV.

And most of his interviewers are women (The View, Robin Roberts this morning on GMA). They wont bring up the fact that he sent that chump Jesse to stalk a woman across state lines?

And I wonder if Ann Coulter will ever call him a Liberal, since he’s always playing the victim…of his OWN words….

  130. pete says:

I realize that there could be legal action and no one wants to tip their hand but, can we drop “smear” and start calling Bill0’s slander, “slander”?

A smear implies that the one doing the smearing is misleading the public about the intent behind someone’s actions or focusing on a bad outcome regardless of intent. It’s mean but not illegal.

Slander is when one makes a malicious false claim that someone did something they did not do. That’s what Bill0 has done, and continues to do, and it is illegal.

  131. Hoodathunktick says:

Silence, you can go to hell for lying too.

Stupid might get you a hearing.

  132. Tim43 says:

    Love to watch this.

O’Reilly is kicking the snot out of you people. His ratings dominate all of your liberal talking heads combined and the tiny little so called victory with UPS has completely unphased him.

In fact, it has left UPS looking like the idiots by supporting such and extremist left wing organization that only cares about tearing down people with opposing points of view.

Good luck in your smear campaign TP. Who is next? Hannity? Beck? Savage? or will you simply pick a fight with a rape victim who happens to be a conservative? How about a working american like Joe the Plumber who happens to NOT be in a union? I know that you hate those non-union working people.

  133. Linus says:

Has anyone seen or heard any comment from the It Happened to Alexa Foundation on this Billofactured brouhaha? Did I miss it? I can understand the Foundation not wanting to be drawn into O’Reilly’s silly conspiracy accusations and his childish tiff with MSNBC (and “he who must not be named”), but the stalking and intimidation of Ms. Terkel (sp?) ordered by O’Reilly is a whole other matter, one that I would have thought would elicit comment from the Foundation. Perhaps their silence it due to a “gag” clause in their contract with O’Reilly for his appearance at their fundraiser — no discussion of O’Reilly and anything relating to or arising from the event? Or perhaps they figure that commenting on one aspect of the brouhaha will draw them into the rest of it? But the Foundation has clearly been used by O’Reilly in his mindless vendetta against all things MSNBC, so shouldn’t they say something? Or should they maintain a low profile and not risk this thing interfering with their mission?

  134. pete says:

You know what? It occurs to me that FAUX viewers like being lied to. They need to be lied to in order to maintain their delusional nationalism, elitism, and bigotry. FAUX is always there to tell them they’re better than everyone else when the facts disagree.

  135. Pachydiplax St. Augustine says:

    Hello Tim43:

Would you like to play a game of dominos?

I was wondering what you expect to happen on Letterman tonight? Will Dave embarrass Billo or will they just be bowling buddies sitting around talking about anything but TP, NBC, Media Matters, Obermann or Amanda.

Inquiring minds want the cart before the horse.

  136. boudin says:

    Timmie, Timmie,

Your comment about “only cares about tearing down people with opposing points of view?” That’s a description of your hero O’Reilly, little fellow. And that part about Joe the Plumber being a working american (sic)? He ain’t employed, at least not as a plumber. And, real working American plumbers hate his ass. See what just happened in Pittsburgh.

You and your thugs and henchmen need to do a little fact checking before you start spouting off. You might consider following the example of the president and find out what you’re talking about before you open your mouth.

  137. spring heeled jack says:

Tim is all decked-out in Factor gear.

  138. pegleg peggy says:

The question in my mind is, Why are the foundation aiding and abetting O’Reilly and his smears?

Here is a copy of a letter sent to the foundation last Thursday, and again yesterday, by the ad hoc group Concerned Citizens Against Sexual Violence, who organized the petition asking the Alexa Foundation to replace O’Reilly as their guest speaker. As yet, the group have received no reply.

    pegleg peggy Says:

    March 31st, 2009 at 4:32 pm

First of all, thank you for posting the link to your letter. Have you considered sending a copy to Amanda or any of the others that Bill0 has slandered over this issue?

Second. I too am perplexed by the Foundation’s silence. It’s entirely possible, and my fervent hope, that the principals are unaware of the implications of this story and/or think that any involvement would damage them. They may have simply decided to keep out of it and that’s their right.

However, as time goes on, something doesn’t smell right. I think that public statements will be necessary to figure out whether Bill0 overreacted to a handful of people who may have been overzealous, concocted the whole thing to provide something to rave about, or (and I really don’t want to go there!) someone from the Foundation decided to team up with Bill0 in his culture war.

There’s one other horrendous possibility that comes to mind but, in light of the Foundation’s silence, it won’t go away. It’s possible that some principal of the Foundation has seen extra money coming in and is willing to let Bill0 make all the slanderous remarks he wants as long as the cash is flowing. And I don’t think those suspicions will go away by themselves.

  143. Jobu says:

Mr. O’Reilly continues to lie about the non-existent “attack” on Alexa and the foundation.

I think a civil suit is in order. Any number of people (Amanda, Zucker, et. al.) have been slandered repeatedly. It doesn’t matter if it is winnable; O’Reilly should be shown to be the compulsive liar he is.

Ever notice that in addition to being breathtakingly stupid, Bill O’Reilly’s trolls are almost all exceedingly vulgar?

  144. marwick says:

    Silence is Golden Says:

He was taken out of context and Terkel ADMITTED IT on the tape.

The whole ThinkProgress blog thrives on misdirection and taking things out of context. If you asked a Thinkprogress blogger for directions from Los Angeles to San Diego, you might end up in Phoenix. This is a propaganda blog.

  145. Zooey Lepidoptera says:

BILL O’REILLY: “So anyway I’d be rubbing your big boobs and getting your nipples really hard, kinda’ kissing your neck from behind…and then I would take the other hand with the falafel thing and I’d just put it on your p***y but you’d have to do it really light, just kind of a tease business…”
–as quoted in a sexual harassment suit filed against him by a Fox News producer, 2004 (Source)

    IN CONTEXT

It’s ok, trolls. We understand that your morality is subjective, and that you’ll excuse anything and everything someone does — as long as they purport to be “against the left.”

We understand that you are lost souls, who need to be told what to do and what to think every moment of every single day. And if someone wasn’t there to tell you what to do, you’d be like lost baby ducks wandering in traffic.

But don’t worry, there will always be a Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly out there to tell you what and how to think. They’ll take care of you.

They wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire, but you wouldn’t have it any other way, would you?

    Baaaaaaaaaaaa…

  148. hstps says:

LOL, look at all your comments saying you’re going to start doing business with UPS, or “go UPS” or “good job UPS.” What a disfunctional website this is.

For those who did not care to do some more research, here you go:

Susan Rosenberg, spokeswoman for UPS, previously issued this statement to ThinkProgress (3/30/09):

We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.”

  149. boudin says:

    hstps,

Would you mind providing a link for that? Being dysfunctional and all, I’m having a little trouble finding that statement anywhere.

  150. dbadass says:

I didn’t make any comments about UPS and my shipping needs. Just who do you think you are talking to? I know O’Reilly to be a f ucking clown and I don’t even have cable

  151. hstps says:

    boudin,

Well being dysfunctional, I thought you might:
    Here you go:http://thinkprogress.org/oreilly-campaign-responses/

    RIGHT ON THINKPROGRESS!!!

    lmao.

  152. hstps says:

    dbadass,

So you don’t watch O’Reilly regularly, but you hate him? Based on what? A few clips on Youtube and what you hear from the internet?

Hate based on no justification is called…prejudice…so, you are prejudice? I guess so.

  153. pete says:

Good evening, dbadass. A big flock of starlings blew through today while a blizrd is blowing just a bit North of here.

  158. bigtoyz says:

O’Reilly loves this. He got you punks puking all over yourselfs. All because his staff “ambushed” poor little Amanda after she checked into a cheap motel with her boyfriend. What got her really upset was the fact that her “butch” found out she was cheating on her, and to make it worse, with a male!!

So O’reilly called you out on not donating to a cause? Do you have a guilty conciensce? If there was nothing wrong about that then why the big deal? You liberals need to grow up!!!
