Sanford: It would be ‘fiscal child abuse’ to accept millions of stimulus dollars for education.

As Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) continues to wage an ideological war against $700 million of sorely-needed stimulus funds for his state, he has become more and more desperate to stave off his critics. Tonight on Glenn Beck’s Fox show, Sanford claimed that accepting the funds — 80 percent of which would fund education in his state — would be akin to “fiscal child abuse”:

BECK: But your point, if I’m not mistaken is, no, no, no, you’re taking care of the children in South Carolina by not taking it. Can you explain that? [...]

SANFORD: Since we don’t have any of this money that’s now being dispensed from Washington, DC; since we’re going out and printing money and we’re issuing debt to solve a problem that was created by too much debt; since that’s taking place, and since those costs will be borne by the next generation, in fact it is sort of fiscal child abuse to do what we’re doing.

BECK: Yes.

Watch it:

It’s unclear whether South Carolina student Ty’Sheoma Bethea will agree that denying her crumbling school the stimulus cash it needs to rebuild — or that firing 4,000 state teachers — is protecting her from child abuse.

I doubt many of Sanford’s “critics” watch Beck’s show.

  2. misscoleopteramolly says:

So lemme get this straight — it’s fiscal child abuse to go into debt to educate children, but it’s NOT fiscal child abuse to go into debt financing pointless wars?

Seems to me it’s the other way around. Debt is debt, but in the latter scenario we’re pouring our money into a black hole, and in the former, we are investing in our future (with a much great chance of getting a return on our investment).

Why can’t Sanford just be honest and say, “Republican debt is good and Democratic debt is bad”? We all know this is what he means.

  3. wiley says:

I’d like to know what South Carolina’s debt is. Who do they owe and for what?

  4. realpatriot says:

If he takes the money and helps to educate the children of the state of s. carolina..
perhaps one of those children will lead us out of the wilderness this un-educated boob, who said or did nothing over the past 8 years help allow to happen…
wait…maybe he doesn’t care if America ends up ruled under China….
    No that’s Un-American…
Beck and Sanford, STFU and go start your own country, maybe in Texas or Alaska…

pick out a shopping cart and a nice bridge to live under, South Carolina.

  8. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

So then I guess Sanford would agree that the Bush Administration committed “fiscal child abuse” for the 8 years when he doubled our national debt from $5 trillion to $10 trillion.

  9. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Sanford’s vision of an ideal world… keep them dumb and on the plantation. He doesn’t want the poor folks in SC getting an education. Education is not a problem for the rich because they can pay for private education. As for the fundies, they home school.

  10. CParis says:

Seeing that this republitard is posturing for the conservopundit crowd and hoping to get RushHannity’s support for his presidential bid by refusing stimulus funds, I can’t wait to see how he fares in the 2012 South Carolina GOP primary. I’ll bet there will be a huge turnout for the “anyone but Sanford” candidate.

    I smell mendacity!

  12. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

What is “fiscal child abuse” is the fact that Sanford and previous Republican governors of the state have starved the education system in SC to the point where they are dead last in rankings. I think that depriving the children in your state of a decent education is “fiscal child abuse”, don’t you?

  13. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Guido – their hypocrisy makes me sick. And then they wonder why they are becoming more and more marginalized each day.

  14. pastcaring ceratopogonidae says:

Fiscal Child Abuse from the party that knows exactly what it’s talking about?

  15. Cats r Flyfishn says:

CParis – Would Sanford be stupid enough to run as a presidential candidate in 2012? Omg, I can’t stop laughing. How foolish of him to even think that any state other than a few southern states would even vote for him. He wouldn’t stand a chance unless SC is planning on forming a new nation, a nation of dumbf* *ks.

  16. Zooey Lepidoptera says:

Gov Sanford: Protecting the children of South Carolina from that great nuisance called education.

  17. MapleStreet says:

Yep – the plantation mentality survives in Charleston (Sanford is from a well-heeled lowcountry family).

Charleston, where the offices of the board of education are referred to as the Taj Mahal while a school within sight of the board is crumbling.

And when a volunteer group wired an inner-city school for internet, the school was then converted to a charter school and the low income folks were kicked out.

  18. nanlichi nasschagii says:

Hells bells, I just realized that I am a child abuser. My two boys don’t seem to mind the abuse though, and have pretty solid jobs.

The poor abused nanlichis know where to go if they need someone to do some landscaping, or clean their windows. Thanks Sanford, for the supply of cheap labor! Heaven forbid they be abused with a good education.

    And Beck just sucks.

  21. Whenwillthisnightmareend says:

This ideologic is idiot logical on it’s face. How, tell me will he protect the children of his state from repaying this “debt”. Regardless of whether or not South Carolina accepts this stimulus money for the education of its children, all citizens will bear the burden, whatever that is, of repaying back this debt. So by not taking South Carolina’s fair share of stimulus funds for the Education of its children, they will still be burdened by the repayment, I guess in higher tax burdens for later generations. However, those children will be at a definite disadvantage when compared to all the other children whose states used those funds to educate them for higher paying jobs in their later years.
Come on now, who are you kidding, Gov. Sanford,(republican, SC), You are damaging those you should be protecting. It’s that simple!

  22. Above the Clouds says:

Just to refresh my memory–what exactly does the Republican Party stand for any more? Where does Sanford’s stance help promote the GOP in any way? I don’t recall SC being a model for anything–let alone education.

  23. dixie blood says:

    #22 – Whenwillthisnightmareend,

Actually the children of SC will be on welfare and not owe a dime to the debt. Sad, but, true.

Of course, SC will continue to be a backwater swamp swarming with stupidity and Sen. Linseed Graham(cracker) will be their leader.

  24. StratRat says:

Sanford has a point: I mean, what has education every done for Republicans? The GOP cult is comprised of badly home-schooled, spirit worshiping, uninformed clods.

Education? We don’t need no stinkin’ education – just lots of bible thumpin’.

  25. barfly says:

It’s pretty obvious he’s using the recession as an opportunity to improve his state’s bottom line, by making conditions so deplorable, the poor move to a different state.

The neighboring governors will complain, but what can they do? Attempt to race him to the bottom? Or try to capitalize on the situation, by allowing his governorship to self-destruct, and try to entice some of the fleeing businesses to also resettle in their states?

  26. Pelotonpro 048 says:

North Carolina schools rank 23rd overall in the U.S.A. Mediocrity is apparently acceptable but federal aid is not. That may also explain the number of registered Republicans in that state. Why are the Gops so afraid of teaching a new generation of Americans critical thinking skills?

  27. dixie blood says:

    #26 – barfly,

I’m thinkin’ he hopes the poor will try to make it to a “new and better world” in NOLA.

  28. dixie blood says:

    #27,

It’s South Carolina we are discussing….

  29. wiley says:

They’re not all asleep at the wheel. I found this editorial in a S.C. newspaper:

Unfortunately, South Carolina is not one of the 18 states that allow for recall of the governor. The governor of South Carolina can, however, be impeached by a two-thirds vote of the House of Representatives.

Where can I sign the petition to put this in motion?

  30. dixie blood says:

I’m also surprised that the RePugniScum governor would not LOVE boat loads of money to continue funding the completely corrupt educational systems in SC.

I enjoy the lecture The Republican Sanford is giving on fiscal prudence! The only administration that had balanced budget for the last 30 years was a Clinton, running a surplus (he was a Democrat). President Obama is spending in order for our children to have an economy, and there isn’t a choice. The biggest problem during the Great Depression was the 3 years the government did practically nothing to help the economy,
and that prolonged the recovery. All politics are local, and Sanford’s job is the state of South Carolina’s business. Mixing it with national Republican politics may very well cost him his job, if the electorate of his state has any commen sense..

On another point, StratRat, you have stooped to a conservative Republican’s level. Lets change the tone. Thinking a thought is one thing (I have your same thoughts on the subject). Putting those thoughts into words is called crass. They spelled it this way for a reason.

I can’t get over the fact that these righties have child abuse on the brain. 54. curious says:

If I understand this mental midget, it is educational child abuse to want educated children. He wants them ignorant or desperate enough that the military is their only option. This way they can fight Republican wars and work for slave wages in Republican dead end jobs. If there is no educated populace they are middle class or upper middle class. Which is what they want.

That guy Sanford. Just how does anyone stand someone who is nothing but a political party? An ideology with no humanity to soften it. He would rather have a one party second rate country.

  56. Carol A says:

Gov. Sanford can’t run for another term. He’s not concerned about re-election. His argument about generational debt is total BS. He’s grandstanding, denying South Carolinians federal stimulus dollars in order to paint himself as a fiscal conservative. He’s considering a presidential run in 2010. Like a strict father spanking an attention-seeking child, Sanford has convinced some South Carolinians that he’s inflicting the pain for their own good. I call BS on that! South Carolina is a high proverty state to begin with, ranking well below most states by most measures. Sanford is another Republican who benefits from keeping the people poor, undereducated, and desperate. People of SC, it’s time to get out your pitchforks march on Columbia!

  57. Purple State says:

First off, I think we can do without the “this is South Carolina we’re talking about” comments. There is no perfect state in the Union, and South Carolina is still part of our country. It’s the governor that is turning the money down here.

Second of all, am I mistaken here, or did Glenn Beck act as if he was the conductor in his own personal orchestra when Sanford dropped the “child abuse” moniker? It’s as if he had planted that seed in the conversation himself.

Offering money, denying money, whatever. Just don’t associate either with child abuse.

  58. pete says:

    Purple State Says:
…did Glenn Beck act as if he was the conductor in his own personal orchestra when Sanford dropped the “child abuse” moniker?

I noted that too. My first thought was that it looked rehearsed. Now that I think about it, I’m wondering if it was rehearsed of if Becky actually wrote the “answer” he needed to “prove” how evil all those “libruls” really are.

  59. bonat says:

SANFORD NEEDS TO BE IMPEACHED. I lived in Columbia, SC for 2 years on assignment and hated every minute of it. It was like stepping waaaaay back in time. It is child abuse to deny kids a decent education. If some of those schools that I saw were in any other place they would be torn down and a new school would be built. All those teachers are going to be laid off because of Sanford’s political posturing? What a crime.
