Roll Call reports today that “anti-war Democrats have been largely mum on President Barack Obama’s recently unveiled policy for Afghanistan — partly because leading liberals don’t yet know where they stand.”
But Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim member of Congress, is clear about his position on the issue. Yesterday, Thinkprogress interviewed Ellison and asked where he stands on President Obama’s plan to send 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. Afghans have “seen a lot of foreign powers come to their country — whether it’s the Soviets, the Brits, and now the Americans — and I think they want to see their country finally have peace,” Ellison replied. Ellison told ThinkProgress that he is “skeptical” of the troop increase:
I am skeptical of the troop escalation in Afghanistan. I have my doubts about whether that’s what’s needed. But if troop escalations is what’s going to happen, and if it may in fact be the right thing, the real question is, what are they going to be doing? If they’re just going to be taking it to the “enemy,” I am confident that it will be a failed effort. And I don’t say that with any relish. … The best course of action, I think, is to have an increase in civilian efforts to improve the lot of the average Afghan, with a clear goal to move things into the Afghans as fast as possible.
“We should be trying to exit Afghanistan, too,” he emphasized. “I don’t think we should have any long term plans there either.” Ellison said the U.S. should work to develop agriculture and provide basic security in the area. Watch it:
Ellison was also critical of Obama’s policy of launching “Predator strikes” — or bombing suspected terrorists through remote-piloted aircraft — in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The attacks regularly inadvertendly kill civilians and are deeply unpopular among the public. Ellison said the strikes inflame anti-American sentiment:
I think Predator strikes have not contributed positively. We’ve just heard so many bad things about them. They must really be killing the American image in the mind of the average Afghan. … I think that you need a human being to go see whether or not the strike is actually targeted at a true hostile enemy, rather than a wedding party — which has happened all too often.
“So really, it’s like you cut one head off, and three pop up,” Ellison said of the Predator strikes’ effect on terrorism.
Let’s ALL go to Afghanistan! make it a tourist haven!
April 1st, 2009 at 8:12 pmHAPPY st. stupids day!!
I think any congress person talking about tactics is a stretch. Policy is your game not military tactics. I don’t know how predator drones make sense from a military tactic point of view, and I don’t think Ellison does either. I agree with Ellison when it comes to more troops, but I don’t have a better answer to say what we should do. Obama at least seems to have some kind of plan.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:14 pmyes, mr. klaat – you’ve made your point.
such as it is…
the thing is,
for us anyway…
thoughtful does not equal treasonous.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:19 pmKeith Ellison is an excellent Representative from and for Minnesota. He more than makes up for Bimbo Bachmann who is a complete looney-toon.
I am pleased to hear him air his concerns and glad that this kind of thing can happen within the Democratic party. After all, it was the rubber-stamp republicans who aided and abetted GDumbya in creating the mess to begin with. We need more Ellisons and we need no Bachmanns.
We could also do without a Klatuu as well. Trolls like it are so boring and ignorant.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:21 pmWe’re talking about a country where 80 percent of the people can’t read. Moving things to the Afghan people isn’t going to get us very far very fast.
http://www.pufferfishblog.com/
April 1st, 2009 at 8:23 pmEllison has a point as the same thing was said by the Iran rep. The US needs to train the Afghanistan army and let them take care of their country. Bush ordered countries to be like the US and that wont happen. President Hamid Karzai is a Bush puppet and Unicol Oil employee. He was given that job to do as Cheney ordered and now he’s sucking up to who he can to keep the money that’s coming in. Not much of the money goes to the people as Karzai is taking as much for himself and the rest goes for Cheney’s oil pipe line. Once Karzai doesn’t get money he will leave and come back to the US to his job at the Oil Company.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:26 pmTHINKPROGRESS GOT OWNED!!!
THEY ALSO got PUNKED BY UPS.
And all you left wing dings started saying “oh im doing business with ups from now, not fedex”
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
UPS SAYS:
Susan Rosenberg, spokeswoman for UPS, previously issued this statement to ThinkProgress (3/30/09):
We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:29 pmI agree with most of the posts so far. Ellison has brought up valid issues concerning Afghanistan. Where we part company, is when he starts talking about military tactics.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:31 pmhstps,
there’s something right there…
….on your shoulder….
–oh! yeah! – it’s a big honkin’ CHIP..
nice.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:31 pmmay not have been a major victory….
but it’s been worth it to see the hysterical ninny fest it prompted.
billO’s lucky to have all those ninnies backing him up.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:33 pmWell I’m against both of these wars so that’s where I stand.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:33 pmIt really depends what the troops do, doesn’t it? With knowledgeable commanders, good interpreters, and well behaved troops it could go well. The war never was against Afghanistan, just Hezbola & Taliban.
I wish the Gov’t had offered a higher bounty of Bin Laden, like 1 Billion dollars. It would have saved a lot in the long run. A lot of money and lives. But Repugs/Conservatives don’t do Long Run.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:34 pmhstps, nobody here ever said that UPS had pulled its ads from faux news. The issue was O’slime ball, and UPS has said they will not be advertising on the O’ Slime ball show in the near future.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:35 pm@tombaker
just like all you ninnes of thinkprogress who supported the mass email camping that may result in possible legal action against TP (from UPS)?
just like all you ninnes of Colbert who submitted his name to NASA after he told you to do?
just like all you ninnes who voted for Obama after he told you to vote for him?
just for all you ninnes who dissed Rush but has never listed to a full radio show of his after the democrat party told you about him?
April 1st, 2009 at 8:37 pm@angels81
Proof: At 8:22PM EST, a UPS advertisement came on Fox News. Between 8PM and 9PM, O’Reilly is on. So much for your campaign? I think so.
Face it, you guys got punked pretty bad…you were quick to make a false assumption…then FOX called UPS, UPS got angry at you! So what are the effects of your pathetic attempt? Your wasting of everyones time? Your spamming of people’s inboxes? What is the effect of that?—Your time…you wasted…your time.
Good for you UPS!
April 1st, 2009 at 8:39 pm@tombaker: Spelling isn’t your strong suite is it?
April 1st, 2009 at 8:40 pmI trust that Obama has the intelligence (both personal and the information about the circumstances) to make good judgements about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I also believe he has the best interests of America and the World as his goals. I support him and hope his plans succeed.
But, then again, that’s how I felt about the Bush administration efforts.
Ellison’s view seems more consistent with those that opposed our involvement in the Middle East under Bush.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:40 pmI have no problem with his objection. It appears to me to be thoughtful and carefully phrased.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:42 pmI like Keith Ellison and I think he is an intelligent person who represents his constituency well.
But he was asked this question because he is a muslim.
Frankly, though, I don’t think representatives are any more informed than any of us who post here – so opinions from representatives on matters on which they have no control or inside information is interesting, but not any more informed or valuable than something one of us would say.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:44 pmbackup says: For once you said something that made sense. You lost me on the ” that’s how I felt about the bush admin, but hey. what can I say.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:45 pm@KLATUU!!!!
LOL!!!!!
Angel, your response?
April 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pmActually, the person who notified us of UPS’ comments also pointed out that there had been A UPS commercial on O’Rs that day.
You: klatuu or htsp or Blaaart!, or just plain old Duuuuh, whatever your moniker, might trying reading the entire statement.
As for listening to a full hour of Rush, as several people commented & quoted the other day (I paraphrase):
“I don’t have to actually eat a shit sandwitch to know what it is.”
Rush is a shit & peanut butter sandwitch, probably cut in 4 triangles instead of 2 manly rectangles.
It would have been absurd to swear-in a non Christian on the Christian Bible. Why not use a dictionary or Churchill biography, any type of “big book” well respected by most people.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:47 pmKlatuu Says: What the hell is your point? I know some of you repugs have problems reading, but UPS NEVER said they would stop advertising on Faux. What they said, and was reported by TP was, that UPS had know plans of advertising on O’Reillys show in the near future. Try reading troll.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:51 pmbackup Says:
Minor question
So you believe all these things under Bush?
“I trust that Obama has the intelligence (both personal and the information about the circumstances) to make good judgements about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I also believe he has the best interests of America and the World as his goals. I support him and hope his plans succeed.”
But, then again, that’s how I felt about the Bush administration efforts.
Could you clarify that for me?
April 1st, 2009 at 8:51 pmhstps. I thought it was kind of a stretch, but it was a tough sell at the time:
April 1st, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Man oh Man! you lock step Obama bots need to get over yourself..Just because someone disagress with POTUS every once in awhile doesn’t mean they are a traitor.I spent SEVERAL months helping with the Obama campaign in my area and I’m very disappointed in many of the routes O has been going.Does that make me a traitor for voicing my discontent? Well I guess so in the eyes of some of the idiots on here.. Really you can’t blindly follow ANY leader look where it got the Republicans,The Nazis,The Romans etc etc etc.. Question Authority.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:55 pmhuh.
breaking: ed schultz got the job!
The Ed Show, to follow Rachel Maddow…
i feel good about that… even though i was wishing for sam…
… good thing it’s summer coming… my lefty radio schedule is all messed up… ch-ch-ch-changes………..
April 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pmangels81 Says:
April 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pmIMO I don’t take what B-cup say seriously seems like his simply taking a popular stance among Democrats and exploiting it, wich has mix opinions wich soon will mean Dem vs Dem.
stuff it, righties!
you’re all just lying anyway.
Ed goes on MSNBC Monday!!!!
April 1st, 2009 at 8:58 pmEliHarold, you say you were an Obama supporter? You must think we all have stupid written on our foreheads. If you had been aronud here for awhile, you would know that we don’t walk lockstep with Obama. You came onto this site, just like some rightwing troll.
April 1st, 2009 at 8:59 pmi should add:
congratulations big eddie!
April 1st, 2009 at 9:00 pmbackup – you’ve already created one black-hole-tar-pit today
couldja just leave it at that?
April 1st, 2009 at 9:01 pmKlatuu: Were you smart enough to get my point? Didn’t think so.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:01 pmNeedless to say, if Obama hadn’t escalated the troops levels in Afghanistan, the trolls would all be condemning him as a foreign-policy wimp.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:04 pmProof that this website is basically trash.
A user of ThinkProgress.org, WillowOrchid , commented:
April 1st, 2009 at 9:05 pm
To Angels81: What a splendid typo:
“Strong Suite”, good one. Right up there win “dew process” and “undo hardship” over at C&L.
Ever read “Mrs. Wallop” by Peer DeVries? Very funny.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:06 pmThe trolls run here saying, ” see! we told you”. with the lie that UPS would stop advertising on faux. What would happen to these clowns if they had to stick to the truth? How would they make their point? The truth is a hard rock to chip threw for the trolls.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:07 pmthen shouldn’t you have somewhere else to be?
April 1st, 2009 at 9:09 pmKlatuu: So, typing is not my strong suit. You still can’t refute my point, so you attack my typing instead. What a stupid tool.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:10 pmkind of “obsessed” behavior if you ask me.
won’t find me stalking righty websites….running my mouth in a juvenile manner to try to piss people off…
…that’s like the little boys who brandish boogers to make girls scream on the schoolbus….
April 1st, 2009 at 9:10 pmThe trick is to differentiate the Taliban proper from the specific folks they are after. That’s what Obama said he would do, but not enough people are aware of this to make an informed opinion.
The Bushies didn’t do that.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:11 pmAngels81: I like your occasional typos. Also, you make plenty of valid, intelligent points.
As a secretary I once used witch for which on a somewhat important letter. My boss thought it was hysterical. Good think, I mean thing, he proof-red the letter!
“Klatuu” is the sound the toilet makes just before it clogs up and overflows.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:13 pmI disagree with this.
ThinkProgress is a great site. Great format. With a huge amount of content.
TP was a little too aggressive with the O’Reilly sponsor campaign. Everybody makes mistakes. This is just one of those.
(BTW, the more content you generate, the more likely you’ll misstep).
It happens.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:16 pmThanks for the on-topic thought, Ape-Man.
There are clearly questions of quality and quantity when it comes to these matters, and I think that’s what Ellison was getting at by bringing up the drone attacks.
Ellison’s critique is thoughtful and constructive, and it deals directly with some of the real-life challenges in Afghanistan, rather than waving them off with a blanket commitment to one extreme or the other.
I’m sure there are sane and responsible Republicans, like Chuck Hagel, who would lend similar insights in their evaluation of current plans.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:17 pmKlatuu, Maybe you are a typing whizz and a great speller. You still can’t speak in a intelligent manner about the issue of this thread. Now I ask you… Which one of us is the dumber? My vote goes to you.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:23 pmwait – so sorry – and i’m sure i’ve already been corrected -
but ed schultz is on at 5e, not after rachel…
and shuster is moved back to afternoon… wow…
so, sam still has a chance!
April 1st, 2009 at 9:28 pmKlatuu, before we move on to more BS, please answer were anybody on this site said that UPS was stopping advertising on faux news. The issue has always been about O’Reilly, and UPS has said they have no plans to advertise on O’Reillys show in the near future.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:29 pmAcknowledge your mistake by making a post on the front page, and we will call off the right wingers tomorrow.
The tactic he used is used by many news casters and commentators. It only became an issue to all you left wing ding bots after Amanda Turkey faced the criticism.
Sorry, but if you playing in the field of politics, then you have to be ready for that sort of thing. BTW, her title “I was ambushed, harassed, followed”–totally out of line–she is looking for sympathy, and you were stupid enough to give it to her.
But my real issue is not with her, its with Faziz, the owner of this site for deceiving people into believing that UPS canceled on O’Reilly as a result of the erroneous campaign (which still includes the little UPS tidbit). A FALSE CLAIM!!!!

LOL, THINKPROGRESS GOT PUNKED BY UPS!
Remember over the weekend when all these left wing-ding-bots got all hyped up over the whole UPS thing?? Well it turns out that the entire thing was false. Mr Faziz or w/e the hell his name is, made it seem that UPS canceled on the O’REILLY SHOW as a result of the email campaign. NOPE!!!! What credibility does this website have now if its managers are deceiving their own readers? None.

April 1st, 2009 at 9:32 pmThinkProgress has now attained that value of TRASH that Digg is.
Klatuu, still couldn’t answer the question that this thread is really about, could ya?
April 1st, 2009 at 9:35 pmKlaat’s hallucinating, because he thinks there is something treacherous hiding in Rep. Ellison’s comments – either that or he’s making the most ham-handed attempts to sow division I’ve ever seen.
And this all-consonants person is worse-off than he.
I’d take a backup-fueled quicksand thread,
over this perverse stink-fest, anytime.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:40 pmKlatuu, you really are a funny guy. Sitting here drinking Bloody Marys, and the Little Red head egging me on to play with the trolls, Its really been fun letting you show what a fool you really are. You haven’t made ONE point that has anything to do with this thread, but you have been fun. Me and the Little Redhead thank you.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:41 pm@angels81 what do I need to give you my twitpic site that shows me going door to door and at all of the MoveOn parties I threw? and a copy of my ballot that I scanned when I voted for Obama? (I live in Oregon we have mail in voting) I’ve been coming to ThinkProgress since it’s inception. So STFU.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:44 pmEllison is making very good and realistic points regarding the Afaghanistan war.
Soviets before us sent 10 times the amount of troops that we have now,but were unbable to control the country.
In the Nineteen Century British troops were all wiped out in a total and humiliating military defeat in Afganstan.
India was also defeated in Afghanstan.
Soviets kept telling their people that they were winning the war in the eighties of last century and at first Soviets sent small number of fighting units, later the number grew to reach almost half a million soldiers.
After 8 years, Soviets finally reached a conclusion to withdraw from Afghanstan, after losing over 15,000 soldiers, and the country went bankrupt.
You can’t laugh at what Ellison said, because his points are valid.
If one asks what are the goals in Afghanstan, and how to achieve them, one will hear hundreds of different descriptions and solutions of Afghanstan war from the same party leaders, and the same adminstration officials.
This war in Afghanstan started in late 2001,now we are 2008. Bush then addressed the nation and said that Taliban are on the run…and they were smoked out.
That was 2001,now we are sending more troops.
Unless our goals are crystal clear,we will be still there in Afghanstan by the end of Obama’s second term….but at a higher cost.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:49 pmafhgan will be Obama’s Vietnam.
We Americans are so naive to believe we can control that country and make it a democracy. Many have tried to conquer it none have succeeded.
We are always in a war on something. Too much money for the few not to be in some kind of war and as long as the populace does not protest in the streets it is clear sailing for corp profits.
Only a complete economic meltdown in America and the middle class losing its ability to buy buy and buy some more stuff from china and Europe will American imperialism end.
Look how the Germans lined the streets to congratulate their soldiers during the first years of world war two and called their soldiers heroes.
I was hoping we had learned our lesson from Vietnam but we did not.
Vietnam was the beginning of the end of America as we had known it. What we sow we reap or is it weep.
This is a republic and we deserve our leaders the day will come when Americans might look into the mirror deeply. They wont like what they see as we are an imperialist nation and don’t have a clue we are. Not a clue.
Even the mass media (corp sponsors) is in on the imperialism as are the major universities for industrial military grants. $$$$$$$$$$
Most Americans actually have been convinced that we need these 700 military bases around the world and this mega military budget for our freedoms. Brainwashing works we Americans are living proof of that.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:52 pmoh… i see there’s a preoccupation with idjits to have noticed my mistake… whew.
April 1st, 2009 at 9:54 pmwow. that rachel – what a woman!
interviewing colin powel AND queen noor!
i know!
she IS having quite a day!

April 1st, 2009 at 9:56 pm“klaatu surrounds them…
..they are frightened….”
puh-leeeeze, mr. klaat – how special did your mother tell you you were??
April 1st, 2009 at 10:01 pmThe only troops we need in Afghanistan are the ones that can secure an area to enable the rest of the troops to get the hell out.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:03 pmIf we want to do some good, propping up a puppet government that barely controls the capital isn’t going to cut it. Let the Afghan people decide who they want to have govern them.
Guaranteed, it’ll be warlords. Buy their opium from them, and you control them. Let them take out the Taliban.
Barada nikto, mofo!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:04 pmEli, I read your first post again so let me try to clarify whats going on IMO.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:07 pmThe posts that slam Obama are not from us, the regular posters on TP. They are from the Trolls that show up here as well to try and hijack threads while the adults are having the discussion. Your point is taken though. I heard alot of the same stuff from friends about this today.
But if you read the posts slamming Rep. Ellision AND the others concerning O’Reilly, you’ll see the pattern I’m talking about.

April 1st, 2009 at 10:13 pmWeep Weep Weep.
ThinkProgress has now attained that value of TRASH that Digg is.
tarazan Says:
As I understand it we’re not targeting Afganistan (because history has shown that they’re very powerfull).
We’re targeting extremist there with the help of the Afganistan military, I think that’s what pres. Obama said last time that he’ll also send 4000 spec. units to continue training the Afg people.
I think it makes the plan more doable if in time the Afganistans people can defend themselves from radicals.
But I do not believe it’s worth the cost or the time (it could take 4/6 more years of war and bloodshed) and I do not think it’s worth it.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:14 pmI particularly enjoy it when wingnut trolls make embarrassing spelling errors while assailing the intelligence and/or spelling skills of others.
(Hint: it’s “strong suit“,not “strong suite“, genius. Must be doubly embarrassing to make the same mistake twice.)
April 1st, 2009 at 10:15 pmI agree, RU -The traditional Loya Jurga is the only political order Afghans will accept. The tribes’ check against the Taliban is probably the best that can be hoped for, and that does indeed hinge on opium revenue.
Buying up all that opium could serve several good purposes – political control over the region, debilitation of international narcotics cartels, and providing steady cashflow in the world’s poorest place.
Righties might just get on board with that – after all, they don’t count it as “spending” if it gets paid out as blood money to corrupt foreign militias. Then again, they seem to prefer synthetic opiate analogs to support their bad habits. If you could guarantee them a minimum level of death and destruction, I think they’d go for it.
Worth consideration – anything that would end our military commitment there is.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:17 pmYou’re right. If we left it to angel to post insipid remarks, wed never get the job doen.
Good thing you’re here to handle the lion’s share of that load.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:18 pmI see our favorite fake-Progressive troll is in da house.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:19 pmNobody here is badmouthing Ellison. One of the trolls has Beck dissing him. We’re not Beck supporters.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:19 pmhstps Says: FLAGGED – OFF TOPIC – STFU
April 1st, 2009 at 10:19 pmI see Mr. Support Obama is going for an even more inept interpretation of Mr. Klaat’s inept and failed attempt to impugn hypocrisy.
Smooth.
And classy.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:20 pmI see the trolls have been busy since I stepped away from my computer. Still spewing nonsense hstps, klatu, backup? You rightwingnut crazies are always full of unimportant information. The GOP has crashed and is burning and now I know why. Because it’s made up of silly clowns like yourselves. No new ideas, no common sense and no real leadership except your demagogues Druggie Rush and O’SillyO the sex phone stalker. You FAIL! You guys have got to stop taking what O’SillHO says as gospel! Now you all look like goons too!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:20 pmEr, dumbass, did you read the last line…
April 1st, 2009 at 10:21 pm“Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.”
TomBaker, perhaps we could find use of all that opiate as enemas for our righty buddies.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:22 pmIt doesn’t matter what UPS says now. The fact remains – we got their attention. We got up under O’SillyO’s skin and we’ve pissed you trolls the fu<k off! Mission accomplished! Say what you want now…it just rolls off like water on a ducks back! Byatches!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:23 pmYou’re not fooling anyone.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:27 pmwell, my 2 cents – i’m going with angels on Eli’s opening remark…
there’s just too much protesteth-ing with that one… especially with his defending statement…
know what i mean?
but oh well…
April 1st, 2009 at 10:27 pmWhy don’t my comments show up here?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:29 pm[i like this one - he's "there are spiders in my pancreas" crazy]
April 1st, 2009 at 10:29 pmEllison is a good dem but he seem to be forgetting that Al Qaeda has safe haven in tribal region of Pakistan & Pakistan has nuclear weapons. That is the reason for the USA being in Afghanistan.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:29 pmThe (Not the ) One says:
April 1st, 2009 at 10:30 pmNothing, as per usual
Just STFU
oh man… what siren call brought out this new crop?
waaay too stoopid to actually deal with… not?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:31 pmEllison is correct. No one has ever “won” in Afghanistan. Ever.
But wait, there’s more. When the right winger’s get their hands on this you can hear it coming. “He’s a Muslem.” Glenn Beck will go to town on this. “Can you tell me you are not working with our enemies?”
April 1st, 2009 at 10:33 pmralph. you have to admit that questioning the UPS reply last week wasn’t very popular:
I think stretching the UPS comment was a mistake and TP should probably run a full thread retraction tomorrow.
What do you think?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:33 pmthis true patriotic American soldier ??
April 1st, 2009 at 10:33 pmWTF? You’re just a sissy troll.

April 1st, 2009 at 10:35 pmPerhaps ‘The One’ has seen too much matrix.

Buying up all that opium could serve several good purposes
I’ve also always wondered why we don’t do this, it’s not like the stuff is useless.
AS to the fuss over UPS, etc. You will always get an equivocal response from corporations in a campaign like this. Rest assureed that one thing I am certain corporate sponsors hate is controversy. They may not provide either side a definative response, but will take steps to avoid becoming further involved. So, you can in the end win, but you’ll never receive a letter from their headquarters saying that they believe you to be correct.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:35 pmI’m not sure yet what to think about these drones. The problem with killer drones is similar to the problem with capital punishment.
One problem with killer drones is a posible future full of killer drones in sky day and night, keeping us ’safe’ from the growing number of ‘territs’ that lurk among us, trying to avoid drones, and deploying drones in return. So drones are easy for now, if a bit expensive, but thay paint a very bleak future.
So if they like using these drones, why don’t they just tag their targets with something non-leathal, like a radio-active marker or dye, so the authorities can go in and bag them. They don’t need to vaporize everybody in the visinity. It’s like they’re fishing using dynamite. Would you accept that sort of thing here, or would you insist they find a better way to catch bad guys within the ‘homeland’ if innocent people were getting hurt or killed occationally by errant drones?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:35 pmAl Qaeda has safe haven in tribal region of Pakistan & Pakistan has nuclear weapons. That is the reason for the USA being in Afghanistan.
Hmm. So Al Qaeda has access to Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, and that’s why we have …whaa?

OH LAWD, RUCeriousDragonfly, I think The One has been taking Beck’s word as gospel! ROTFL! The trolls are really hyper tonight!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:38 pm#95, The One..
Yes, I do in fact want more…it’s hilarious. You mimic the insane rhetoric of the far right so well.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:40 pmDrones are great, when you know that “The One” is “The One”, and you use them to take out “The One”, but when they’re used recklessly, they’re as bad or worse than boots-on-the-ground occupation.
[have another bump, T.O. - the spiders are coming]
April 1st, 2009 at 10:40 pmThey,ve been hyper for a few days now FAC. WAY too much caffiene and lord knows what else!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:41 pmOh, shit! It’s THE ONE!!!!!
*pisses in aroma bath*
April 1st, 2009 at 10:41 pmi think you all need to go back and read ellison’s comments again… and remember that most all that he wants has already been covered by president obama…
April 1st, 2009 at 10:41 pmI’d make out with them, T.O.
Do you want to?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:41 pmAww, lookie, T. O. is trying out a strawman on us. A very old and well discredited one at that.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:43 pmFAIL. Try again T. O.
I’d invite them in for dinner. Unless, of course I was having pork.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:43 pmLet me ask the Uno, where were you in February 69 when I was in Nam?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:44 pmtom. would you really make out with them? Even with the beards?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:44 pmSays Andrew Breitbart: A digital war has broken out, and the conservative movement is losing. Read the comment sections of right-leaning blogs, news sites and social forums, and the evidence is there in ugly abundance. Internet hooligans are spewing their talking points to thwart the dissent of the newly-out-of-power.
And…
The right, for the most part, embraces basic Judeo-Christian ideals and would not promote nor defend the propaganda techniques that were perfected in godless communist and socialist regimes.
I wonder if Mr. Breitbart has ever met our friends Klatuu and “The One’?
Here’s some ripe “basic Judeo-Christian ideals” for ya, Andrew:
All you flaming liberals would shit and piss your pants and call for mummy if Obama gave you what you want.
Good thing your side would never “promote nor defend the propaganda techniques that were perfected in godless communist and socialist regimes”.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:44 pmEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!! Tom! I just spilled my beer on that one. God, thats funny!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:45 pmPiss off bomberklaatu.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:48 pmYes, sir! Captain One, Sir!
Any word from Colonel Beck as to our position?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:49 pmThe part I don’t like, T.O., is the awkward and amateurish, completely transparent and ridiculous way you’ve employed the tactics.
Very clunky and crudely-fashioned, as though by someone who is gripped with meth-based paranoia, and may in fact believe has spiders in his pancreas.
Backup – the very day that a real-life al qaeda dude shows up at my front door I will make out with him, beard and all. And he won’t like it, either.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:49 pmHow about we oppose corporate fascism instead?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:50 pmralph. come on. I know you’re good for it. TP went too far with the UPS comment and should run a retraction.
What do you think?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:50 pmSomething tells me “The One” has never served a day in uniform.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:51 pmHmm, now you’ve got me thinking Tom, perhaps I’ll invite them in for dinner, serve pork but tell them it’s veal!
April 1st, 2009 at 10:51 pmthere ya go RU. and don’t forget to keep a sack of spiders handy, to scare them with after dessert.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:52 pmI don’t think you can know that for sure. We’ll see.
I would personally have to draw a line on making out with the Taliban. But, I might put out some feelers to see if they were on board with wife swapping.

April 1st, 2009 at 10:53 pmlike i said, backup – “the day they show up at my door”, as the folks like Mr. One like to conjecture will certainly happen.

April 1st, 2009 at 10:56 pmDoes that mean I have to stop wearing the ribbons?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:56 pmKlatuu’s post about Ellison swearing in on the Bible must have been deleted, but didn’t he swear in on the Q’uran?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:56 pmif you’re afraid of that actually happening, Mr. One,
you really are in-sane.
seriously.
wanna make out?
April 1st, 2009 at 10:56 pmC’mon, tough soldier boy, what units are/were you in? What duty stations? Medals? C’mon, spill it.

April 1st, 2009 at 10:58 pmWe’ll do like your hero Bush and all neoconservatives do. We’ll torture them for no reason just because they look like Muslims. OR we’ll go into the totally Democratic inner city and round up the gang bangers and tell them to get their automatic weapons and ammo and go shoot the crazy neo Nazis who are a danger to all brown people.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:58 pmI believe if your sorry stupid ass was in those towers I’d thank W for blowing it up. I hate people like you who have destroyed this country and it’s reputation more than I hate the Taliban.
April 1st, 2009 at 10:58 pmThe One. come on. It’s a joke.
I understand that Islamic Fundamentalist Intolerance is a real problem. But, to be fair, so is Fundamentalist Christian Intolerance.

April 1st, 2009 at 11:00 pmThe One. I’ll listen to you. What is your solution to the problems with Islamic intolerance?
April 1st, 2009 at 11:01 pmTo all the trolls who are off topic on this thread…I will join your off-topic status by asking you a question…if you are sooooo right re: UPS then explain just what your captain was talking about on his show.

April 1st, 2009 at 11:04 pmwatch out TBA – backup works the arlen specter style – he’ll tarpit you in a NY minute with his question-begging.
however, to his credit, he’s a downright lefty compared to captain mantastic, and several big cuts above the T.O.’s, and the rest of the mixed nuts.

Unfettered, unchecked power to be abused at their discretion.

April 1st, 2009 at 11:09 pmThe One. Let’s break it down. Do we support Obama in his efforts to intensify the efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Or, do we pursue a tact more along the lines of Rep. Ellison?
April 1st, 2009 at 11:10 pmJust stop now T.o. – you’re embarrassing yourself.
April 1st, 2009 at 11:11 pmgeez, pastcaring, all I asked for was a couple of duty stations, anything…? He’s got nothing but some crapola about a song.

I disagree with that. Ellison has raised some concerns that are valid. I agree with the stragety but I have some missgivings about it. Mainly, that it is late in the game for this. I hope it works, I truly do. Its our last chance to get it right im my opinion.
April 1st, 2009 at 11:21 pmIf anyone’s interested, I’m chartering a fund to assist those, like The One, who suffer from PMSD.

It afflicts tens of thousands of chronic methamphetamine abusers worldwide, and leads to advanced paranoia, persecution complexes, and watching the Glen(n) Beck Show.

I think I’ve heard Obama is a non-Christian enough at this point. It’s like there’s only 5 points of attack they have to fall back on because nothing is of substance.
As for UPS, I thought that they were clear from the get go that any current stuff was wrapping up and they’re not planning to continue on the show. Doesn’t really prove that TP’s campaign has done nothing, although I’d agree they jumped the gun there.
It’s been, what, a week? Things like that don’t change instantaneously.

ralph. you have to admit that questioning the UPS reply last week wasn’t very popular:
Dr. Moth Matt Says:
B-cup rants
Or this:
At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.
Become this:
UPS announced it will no longer advertise on The Factor
Well, B-cup, are pretending to be stupid or are you really stupid? What’s the difference? Please attempt to spin this.
I think stretching the UPS comment was a mistake and TP should probably run a full thread retraction tomorrow.
What do you think?
I think you are as stupid now as you were the last time you said these things. I don’t see where UPS has said anything different than they said the first time which was:
UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.
Since they had UPS ads on O’Reilly the week they said that, then I take it to mean that they are discontinuing advertising on O’Reilly, either that or it was just one big coincidence that they had no pending advertising for O’Reilly after the controversy came up.
If it turns out to not be the case, then I will be writing to UPS again. BTW, they wrote me back a very nice e-mail in response to the one I sent to them thanking them for not advertising on O’Reilly.
April 2nd, 2009 at 1:00 amWell, UPS may be cutting back on advertising because of economical concerns, IIRC Murdochs NewsCorp lost billions and Im pretty sure his revenue comes from advertisements, such as from UPS.

First of all, Keith Ellison is far from being a “liberal” Democrat. And second, if you haven’t heard any Democrats, liberal or moderate who disagree with some of Obama’s policies, then you haven’t been listening. Unlike the lock-step lemming party, Democrats often disagree with each other and talk about their disagreements. It can be rather messy at times but I would rather be a messy Democrat than a lock-step lemming Republican following my party off the cliff. Because being able to disagree with your party leadership means that people are honest in their views. Whereas having to conform to your party’s views, no matter whether you agree or not is inherently dishonest.
April 2nd, 2009 at 1:05 amOoops. I forgot to remind TheOnePussy that this ‘geriatric’ veteran had to take a break to put his 11 week old son to bed…Heh.
April 2nd, 2009 at 1:13 amBilbo. you say this:
But, the TP headline was this:
And then, Susan Rosenberg (UPS) feels compelled to respond back with this:
O’Reilly’s wrong about the stalking, but TP overplayed with the UPS comments. That’s just what happened.
To rectify the situation, and maintain their credibility, TP should just do a quick “Oops” thread, and concede they were wrong about the UPS comment. Everybody makes mistakes. This is just one of those situations where you admit it early and move on.

Sorry, but you’re trying to pass off your own assumptions as “facts” here and they’re not. They’re just your assumptions about what happened here.
“That’s just what happened.”
Neither you or I know what really happened behind closed doors at UPS over this issue. Only the top brass and Susan Rosenberg knows what decisions were made at UPS and why she said what she said.
My ear hears someone trying to back pedal and save face and not offend O’Rally, BUT I’ll admit – that’s my personal opinion. You’re entitled to your own opinion but you’re not the final word on what TP should or should not do, or what ACTUALLY happened here.
Sorry… but yer not that important.
And it’s not like corporations EVER lie, huh?

I disagree with that. Ellison has raised some concerns that are valid. I agree with the stragety but I have some missgivings about it. Mainly, that it is late in the game for this. We should have had more troops there from the start. But Rumsfeld’s disastorous attempt to re-organize the Army and Bush’s indifference to the situation there prevented that. I hope it works, I truly do. Its our last chance to get it right im my opinion.
I agree somewhat.
President Obama has changed the fruitless and baseless war on terror to actually investigating the progress thusfar.
Obama has drastically altered chimpy’s war against bin Laden. The mission has changed. I believe President Obame is playing it smart and has sent in troops to get the real picture, the big picture. He didn’t go gung ho. Especially since chimpy installed his puppet government.
Time will tell.

repugs are so upset that the London protesters aren’t relating the economy downturn to President Obama. The msm and the teabag repugs have planned, for a weeks, with glee, that President Obama’s “honeymoon” would be over.

April 2nd, 2009 at 6:47 amYou forgot that Ellison is a Congressman, it is part of his job and duty to question the government…
It is in the Constitution.
Congress also approves the budget, declares war.
Ellison represents a district in his own state…Not only Ellison alone has that right but all of other states representatives do.
I wish Congress members question government even more than what they are doing these days.
The more the Congress questions government, the better for the country.
Ellison must know that Obama’s handlers are all Zionists, and thus want perpetual war with Arabs, using the USA as a proxy, both militarily and financially.

April 2nd, 2009 at 8:51 amI’m surprised anyone still thinks the Afghanistan invasion had anything to do with “fighting terrorists.” Very effective propaganda.
Dissent on this ill-advised escalation will grow as it becomes obvious that this is a quagmire-in-the-making.
Rep. Jim McDermott has some well-considered thoughts on the matter:

April 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 amI find it hard to believe that anyone still thinks that dressing a dog up in a tutu, teaching it to dance on it’s front paws and smoke cigars makes it anything but a dog.
Come up with all the rationalizations you want and then go check and see if they were used with Viet Nam. We all know how well that worked out.
April 2nd, 2009 at 10:15 amThis is the one place where I part company with the President.
I do understand why his policy is what it is but I would hope that he is not the same bullheaded buttmunch that the shrub was.
If he were to have said b4 the election that he was getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan we would now have president McMarionette. And that would have been the end of life as we know it.
And he has said that throwing more troops in there is not going to be an open ended response. So there is hope.
But Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) is a very courageous man. Kudos to him!!!
April 2nd, 2009 at 11:52 amI think Predator strikes have not contributed positively. We’ve just heard so many bad things about them. They must really be killing the American image in the mind of the average Afghan. …
The problems is that they’re sometimes not only killing “the American image” in the mind of the average Afghan, but that they’re sometimes killing the average Afghan.
