Rep. Ellison: ‘I Am Skeptical Of The Troop Escalation In Afghanistan’

Roll Call reports today that “anti-war Democrats have been largely mum on President Barack Obama’s recently unveiled policy for Afghanistan — partly because leading liberals don’t yet know where they stand.”

But Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim member of Congress, is clear about his position on the issue. Yesterday, Thinkprogress interviewed Ellison and asked where he stands on President Obama’s plan to send 17,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. Afghans have “seen a lot of foreign powers come to their country — whether it’s the Soviets, the Brits, and now the Americans — and I think they want to see their country finally have peace,” Ellison replied. Ellison told ThinkProgress that he is “skeptical” of the troop increase:

I am skeptical of the troop escalation in Afghanistan. I have my doubts about whether that’s what’s needed. But if troop escalations is what’s going to happen, and if it may in fact be the right thing, the real question is, what are they going to be doing? If they’re just going to be taking it to the “enemy,” I am confident that it will be a failed effort. And I don’t say that with any relish. … The best course of action, I think, is to have an increase in civilian efforts to improve the lot of the average Afghan, with a clear goal to move things into the Afghans as fast as possible.

“We should be trying to exit Afghanistan, too,” he emphasized. “I don’t think we should have any long term plans there either.” Ellison said the U.S. should work to develop agriculture and provide basic security in the area. Watch it:

Ellison was also critical of Obama’s policy of launching “Predator strikes” — or bombing suspected terrorists through remote-piloted aircraft — in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The attacks regularly inadvertendly kill civilians and are deeply unpopular among the public. Ellison said the strikes inflame anti-American sentiment:

I think Predator strikes have not contributed positively. We’ve just heard so many bad things about them. They must really be killing the American image in the mind of the average Afghan. … I think that you need a human being to go see whether or not the strike is actually targeted at a true hostile enemy, rather than a wedding party — which has happened all too often.

“So really, it’s like you cut one head off, and three pop up,” Ellison said of the Predator strikes’ effect on terrorism.

  2. angels81 says:

I think any congress person talking about tactics is a stretch. Policy is your game not military tactics. I don’t know how predator drones make sense from a military tactic point of view, and I don’t think Ellison does either. I agree with Ellison when it comes to more troops, but I don’t have a better answer to say what we should do. Obama at least seems to have some kind of plan.

  3. tombaker says:

yes, mr. klaat – you’ve made your point.

    such as it is…

    the thing is,

    for us anyway…

    thoughtful does not equal treasonous.

Keith Ellison is an excellent Representative from and for Minnesota. He more than makes up for Bimbo Bachmann who is a complete looney-toon.

I am pleased to hear him air his concerns and glad that this kind of thing can happen within the Democratic party. After all, it was the rubber-stamp republicans who aided and abetted GDumbya in creating the mess to begin with. We need more Ellisons and we need no Bachmanns.

We could also do without a Klatuu as well. Trolls like it are so boring and ignorant.

We’re talking about a country where 80 percent of the people can’t read. Moving things to the Afghan people isn’t going to get us very far very fast.

  6. Jackie says:

Ellison has a point as the same thing was said by the Iran rep. The US needs to train the Afghanistan army and let them take care of their country. Bush ordered countries to be like the US and that wont happen. President Hamid Karzai is a Bush puppet and Unicol Oil employee. He was given that job to do as Cheney ordered and now he’s sucking up to who he can to keep the money that’s coming in. Not much of the money goes to the people as Karzai is taking as much for himself and the rest goes for Cheney’s oil pipe line. Once Karzai doesn’t get money he will leave and come back to the US to his job at the Oil Company.

    THINKPROGRESS GOT OWNED!!!

THEY ALSO got PUNKED BY UPS.

And all you left wing dings started saying “oh im doing business with ups from now, not fedex”

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!

    UPS SAYS:
Susan Rosenberg, spokeswoman for UPS, previously issued this statement to ThinkProgress (3/30/09):

We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

I agree with most of the posts so far. Ellison has brought up valid issues concerning Afghanistan. Where we part company, is when he starts talking about military tactics.

Well I’m against both of these wars so that’s where I stand.

  12. WillowOrchid says:

It really depends what the troops do, doesn’t it? With knowledgeable commanders, good interpreters, and well behaved troops it could go well. The war never was against Afghanistan, just Hezbola & Taliban.

I wish the Gov’t had offered a higher bounty of Bin Laden, like 1 Billion dollars. It would have saved a lot in the long run. A lot of money and lives. But Repugs/Conservatives don’t do Long Run.

  13. angels81 says:

hstps, nobody here ever said that UPS had pulled its ads from faux news. The issue was O’slime ball, and UPS has said they will not be advertising on the O’ Slime ball show in the near future.

just like all you ninnes who voted for Obama after he told you to vote for him?

just for all you ninnes who dissed Rush but has never listed to a full radio show of his after the democrat party told you about him?

Proof: At 8:22PM EST, a UPS advertisement came on Fox News. Between 8PM and 9PM, O’Reilly is on. So much for your campaign? I think so.

Face it, you guys got punked pretty bad…you were quick to make a false assumption…then FOX called UPS, UPS got angry at you! So what are the effects of your pathetic attempt? Your wasting of everyones time? Your spamming of people’s inboxes? What is the effect of that?—Your time…you wasted…your time.

    Good for you UPS!

Obama at least seems to have some kind of plan.

I trust that Obama has the intelligence (both personal and the information about the circumstances) to make good judgements about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I also believe he has the best interests of America and the World as his goals. I support him and hope his plans succeed.

But, then again, that’s how I felt about the Bush administration efforts.

Ellison’s view seems more consistent with those that opposed our involvement in the Middle East under Bush.

  18. wiley says:

I have no problem with his objection. It appears to me to be thoughtful and carefully phrased.

  19. Marie says:

I like Keith Ellison and I think he is an intelligent person who represents his constituency well.
But he was asked this question because he is a muslim.

Frankly, though, I don’t think representatives are any more informed than any of us who post here – so opinions from representatives on matters on which they have no control or inside information is interesting, but not any more informed or valuable than something one of us would say.

  22. WillowOrchid says:

Actually, the person who notified us of UPS’ comments also pointed out that there had been A UPS commercial on O’Rs that day.

You: klatuu or htsp or Blaaart!, or just plain old Duuuuh, whatever your moniker, might trying reading the entire statement.

As for listening to a full hour of Rush, as several people commented & quoted the other day (I paraphrase):

“I don’t have to actually eat a shit sandwitch to know what it is.”

Rush is a shit & peanut butter sandwitch, probably cut in 4 triangles instead of 2 manly rectangles.

It would have been absurd to swear-in a non Christian on the Christian Bible. Why not use a dictionary or Churchill biography, any type of “big book” well respected by most people.

  23. angels81 says:

Klatuu Says: What the hell is your point? I know some of you repugs have problems reading, but UPS NEVER said they would stop advertising on Faux. What they said, and was reported by TP was, that UPS had know plans of advertising on O’Reillys show in the near future. Try reading troll.

  24. 08Dariana says:

    backup Says:
    Minor question
So you believe all these things under Bush?

“I trust that Obama has the intelligence (both personal and the information about the circumstances) to make good judgements about the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I also believe he has the best interests of America and the World as his goals. I support him and hope his plans succeed.”

But, then again, that’s how I felt about the Bush administration efforts.

Could you clarify that for me?

  25. backup says:

We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

hstps. I thought it was kind of a stretch, but it was a tough sell at the time:

    backup Says:
I disagree with the tactic of stalking someone for an unauthorized interview. But, I would hesitate to claim victory this statement:

At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.

It does not say we are going to stop advertising on O’Reilly’s show, it says they have no plans to continue to advertise.

I could make the statement that I have no plans to continue breathing, that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop. It just means I have no plans.

It’s very possible that the efforts directed at the sponsors have paid off. But, I would wait for a more definitive statement.

Otherwise, this statement stretched into the headline: “BREAKING: UPS Announces It Will Stop Advertising On Bill O’Reilly’s Show”, could backfire on TP’s credibility, if O’Reilly gets a statement from UPS that it hasn’t ruled out future sponsorship.

    I disagree with this.

ThinkProgress is a great site. Great format. With a huge amount of content.

TP was a little too aggressive with the O’Reilly sponsor campaign. Everybody makes mistakes. This is just one of those.

(BTW, the more content you generate, the more likely you’ll misstep).

    It happens.

  44. tombaker says:

Thanks for the on-topic thought, Ape-Man.

There are clearly questions of quality and quantity when it comes to these matters, and I think that’s what Ellison was getting at by bringing up the drone attacks.

Ellison’s critique is thoughtful and constructive, and it deals directly with some of the real-life challenges in Afghanistan, rather than waving them off with a blanket commitment to one extreme or the other.

I’m sure there are sane and responsible Republicans, like Chuck Hagel, who would lend similar insights in their evaluation of current plans.

  53. tarazan says:

Ellison is making very good and realistic points regarding the Afaghanistan war.

Soviets before us sent 10 times the amount of troops that we have now,but were unbable to control the country.

In the Nineteen Century British troops were all wiped out in a total and humiliating military defeat in Afganstan.

India was also defeated in Afghanstan.

Soviets kept telling their people that they were winning the war in the eighties of last century and at first Soviets sent small number of fighting units, later the number grew to reach almost half a million soldiers.

After 8 years, Soviets finally reached a conclusion to withdraw from Afghanstan, after losing over 15,000 soldiers, and the country went bankrupt.

You can’t laugh at what Ellison said, because his points are valid.
If one asks what are the goals in Afghanstan, and how to achieve them, one will hear hundreds of different descriptions and solutions of Afghanstan war from the same party leaders, and the same adminstration officials.

This war in Afghanstan started in late 2001,now we are 2008. Bush then addressed the nation and said that Taliban are on the run…and they were smoked out.
That was 2001,now we are sending more troops.

Unless our goals are crystal clear,we will be still there in Afghanstan by the end of Obama’s second term….but at a higher cost.

    afhgan will be Obama’s Vietnam.

We Americans are so naive to believe we can control that country and make it a democracy. Many have tried to conquer it none have succeeded.

We are always in a war on something. Too much money for the few not to be in some kind of war and as long as the populace does not protest in the streets it is clear sailing for corp profits.

Only a complete economic meltdown in America and the middle class losing its ability to buy buy and buy some more stuff from china and Europe will American imperialism end.

Look how the Germans lined the streets to congratulate their soldiers during the first years of world war two and called their soldiers heroes.

I was hoping we had learned our lesson from Vietnam but we did not.

Vietnam was the beginning of the end of America as we had known it. What we sow we reap or is it weep.

This is a republic and we deserve our leaders the day will come when Americans might look into the mirror deeply. They wont like what they see as we are an imperialist nation and don’t have a clue we are. Not a clue.

Even the mass media (corp sponsors) is in on the imperialism as are the major universities for industrial military grants. $$$$$$$$$$

Most Americans actually have been convinced that we need these 700 military bases around the world and this mega military budget for our freedoms. Brainwashing works we Americans are living proof of that.

  65. tombaker says:

I agree, RU -The traditional Loya Jurga is the only political order Afghans will accept. The tribes’ check against the Taliban is probably the best that can be hoped for, and that does indeed hinge on opium revenue.

Buying up all that opium could serve several good purposes – political control over the region, debilitation of international narcotics cartels, and providing steady cashflow in the world’s poorest place.

Righties might just get on board with that – after all, they don’t count it as “spending” if it gets paid out as blood money to corrupt foreign militias. Then again, they seem to prefer synthetic opiate analogs to support their bad habits. If you could guarantee them a minimum level of death and destruction, I think they’d go for it.

Worth consideration – anything that would end our military commitment there is.

Well I guess so in the eyes of some of the idiots on here.. Really you can’t blindly follow ANY leader look where it got the Republicans,The Nazis,The Romans etc etc etc.. Question Authority.

No new ideas, no common sense and no real leadership except your demagogues Druggie Rush and O’SillyO the sex phone stalker. You FAIL! You guys have got to stop taking what O’SillHO says as gospel! Now you all look like goons too!

  83. backup says:

ralph. you have to admit that questioning the UPS reply last week wasn’t very popular:

    Dr. Moth Matt Says:

    B-cup rants
    Or this:
At this time, we have no plans to continue advertising during this show.

    Become this:
UPS announced it will no longer advertise on The Factor

Well, B-cup, are pretending to be stupid or are you really stupid? What’s the difference? Please attempt to spin this.

AS to the fuss over UPS, etc. You will always get an equivocal response from corporations in a campaign like this. Rest assureed that one thing I am certain corporate sponsors hate is controversy. They may not provide either side a definative response, but will take steps to avoid becoming further involved. So, you can in the end win, but you’ll never receive a letter from their headquarters saying that they believe you to be correct.

  90. Ape-Man says:

I’m not sure yet what to think about these drones. The problem with killer drones is similar to the problem with capital punishment.

One problem with killer drones is a posible future full of killer drones in sky day and night, keeping us ’safe’ from the growing number of ‘territs’ that lurk among us, trying to avoid drones, and deploying drones in return. So drones are easy for now, if a bit expensive, but thay paint a very bleak future.

So if they like using these drones, why don’t they just tag their targets with something non-leathal, like a radio-active marker or dye, so the authorities can go in and bag them. They don’t need to vaporize everybody in the visinity. It’s like they’re fishing using dynamite. Would you accept that sort of thing here, or would you insist they find a better way to catch bad guys within the ‘homeland’ if innocent people were getting hurt or killed occationally by errant drones?

  91. RUCeriousDragonfly says:

Al Qaeda has safe haven in tribal region of Pakistan & Pakistan has nuclear weapons. That is the reason for the USA being in Afghanistan.

    And…

The right, for the most part, embraces basic Judeo-Christian ideals and would not promote nor defend the propaganda techniques that were perfected in godless communist and socialist regimes.

I wonder if Mr. Breitbart has ever met our friends Klatuu and “The One’?

Here’s some ripe “basic Judeo-Christian ideals” for ya, Andrew:

All you flaming liberals would shit and piss your pants and call for mummy if Obama gave you what you want.

I disagree with that. Ellison has raised some concerns that are valid. I agree with the stragety but I have some missgivings about it. Mainly, that it is late in the game for this. I hope it works, I truly do. Its our last chance to get it right im my opinion.

    Become this:
UPS announced it will no longer advertise on The Factor

Well, B-cup, are pretending to be stupid or are you really stupid? What’s the difference? Please attempt to spin this.

I think stretching the UPS comment was a mistake and TP should probably run a full thread retraction tomorrow.

    What do you think?

I think you are as stupid now as you were the last time you said these things. I don’t see where UPS has said anything different than they said the first time which was:

UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

Since they had UPS ads on O’Reilly the week they said that, then I take it to mean that they are discontinuing advertising on O’Reilly, either that or it was just one big coincidence that they had no pending advertising for O’Reilly after the controversy came up.

If it turns out to not be the case, then I will be writing to UPS again. BTW, they wrote me back a very nice e-mail in response to the one I sent to them thanking them for not advertising on O’Reilly.

  220. Xisithrus, Hemiptera says:

Well, UPS may be cutting back on advertising because of economical concerns, IIRC Murdochs NewsCorp lost billions and Im pretty sure his revenue comes from advertisements, such as from UPS.

  221. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    kwsventures Says:
Surprise, surprise. Finally, a liberal democrat that says something, gosh, anything against Obama’s ideas.

First of all, Keith Ellison is far from being a “liberal” Democrat. And second, if you haven’t heard any Democrats, liberal or moderate who disagree with some of Obama’s policies, then you haven’t been listening. Unlike the lock-step lemming party, Democrats often disagree with each other and talk about their disagreements. It can be rather messy at times but I would rather be a messy Democrat than a lock-step lemming Republican following my party off the cliff. Because being able to disagree with your party leadership means that people are honest in their views. Whereas having to conform to your party’s views, no matter whether you agree or not is inherently dishonest.

    Bilbo. you say this:

UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

But, the TP headline was this:

BREAKING: UPS Announces It Will Stop Advertising On Bill O’Reilly’s Show

And then, Susan Rosenberg (UPS) feels compelled to respond back with this:

We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

O’Reilly’s wrong about the stalking, but TP overplayed with the UPS comments. That’s just what happened.

To rectify the situation, and maintain their credibility, TP should just do a quick “Oops” thread, and concede they were wrong about the UPS comment. Everybody makes mistakes. This is just one of those situations where you admit it early and move on.

  224. The Republic of Hymenoptera Stupidity says:

Sorry, but you’re trying to pass off your own assumptions as “facts” here and they’re not. They’re just your assumptions about what happened here.

    “That’s just what happened.”

Neither you or I know what really happened behind closed doors at UPS over this issue. Only the top brass and Susan Rosenberg knows what decisions were made at UPS and why she said what she said.

My ear hears someone trying to back pedal and save face and not offend O’Rally, BUT I’ll admit – that’s my personal opinion. You’re entitled to your own opinion but you’re not the final word on what TP should or should not do, or what ACTUALLY happened here.

Sorry… but yer not that important.

And it’s not like corporations EVER lie, huh?

I disagree with that. Ellison has raised some concerns that are valid. I agree with the stragety but I have some missgivings about it. Mainly, that it is late in the game for this. We should have had more troops there from the start. But Rumsfeld’s disastorous attempt to re-organize the Army and Bush’s indifference to the situation there prevented that. I hope it works, I truly do. Its our last chance to get it right im my opinion.

    I agree somewhat.
President Obama has changed the fruitless and baseless war on terror to actually investigating the progress thusfar.

Obama has drastically altered chimpy’s war against bin Laden. The mission has changed. I believe President Obame is playing it smart and has sent in troops to get the real picture, the big picture. He didn’t go gung ho. Especially since chimpy installed his puppet government.

Dems Investigating Bush Administration Role In AIG Collapse
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/01/dems-investigating-bush-a_n_181868.html

A House oversight panel is investigating the role Bush administration officials and regulators played in the collapse of American International Group. The first step of the investigation begins Thursday, House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Towns (D-N.Y.) tells the Huffington Post, when the committee hears testimony from former AIG CEO Hank Greenberg.

In November 2004, the Bush Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission agreed not to prosecute AIG for allegedly helping companies fudge their books. In exchange, AIG agreed to host a government-appointed auditor in company meetings. At the time, Greenberg said it brought “finality to the claims raised by the SEC and the Department of Justice.”

Towns said that Greenberg should be able to identify Bush administration officials involved in the decision-making around the settlement. Towns added the committee wants to know what Bush administration regulators knew about AIG’s credit default swaps and other highly risky positions that brought the company down.

Asked if he would be directly pursuing Bush administration officials, Towns said: “No doubt about it. That’s the reason I want to talk to Greenberg first. He might even point some folks out. That’s of great interest to us.”

Leahy Bails on ‘Truth Commission’ Plan

    By Charlotte Dennett
    April 1, 2009

    http://consortiumnews.com/2009/040109b.html

Editor’s Note: The U.S. government seems paralyzed at the prospect of holding ex-President George W. Bush and other senior officials accountable for war crimes, even as Spanish investigative judge Baltasar Garzon initiates an inquiry under international law regarding torture sanctioned by Bush’s lawyers.

In this guest essay, investigative journalist and former candidate for Vermont attorney general, Charlotte Dennett, describes a meeting with Sen. Patrick Leahy in which he acknowledges the failure of his plan for a “truth commission”:

Those of you following the George W. Bush prosecution trail will be interested to know that Patrick Leahy’s “truth commission” is a no-go. I was in a meeting with Leahy and four other Vermonters on Monday when he broke the news to us.

We had asked for the meeting to learn why he supported a truth commission over the appointment of a special prosecutor.

Halfway through the allotted 30 minute meeting (with him taking up much of the time explaining why he was not generally opposed to prosecution, since he had been a DA for eight years and had the highest conviction rate in Vermont), he told us that his truth commission had failed to get the broad support it needed in Congress, and since he couldn’t get one Republican to come behind the plan, “it’s not going to happen.”

It was a sobering exchange. The meeting had begun with our expressing serious concerns about ongoing dangers to our democracy, with the trend going to executive power while damaging our Constitution.

“We are a nation of laws,” said Dan DeWalt, who had helped organize 36 Vermont towns to vote for impeachment of Bush on town meeting day. “If we have a system of justice, why not let it take its course? It seems to many Americans that the rich and powerful don’t have the same system of justice, and they’re getting away with torture, murder, fraud, and Ponzi schemes.”

By the end of the meeting, we were beginning to wonder whether anything at all was going to done – by Congress, by Attorney General Eric Holder, by President Barack Obama – to hold the Bush team accountable for its crimes.
    (continued)

    Dear Senator Lahey,
    No guts, no glory!
