Petraeus: Israel might decide to attack Iran.
At a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing today, Gen. David Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, said that Israel may take “preemptive military action” against Iran to prevent it from developing a nuclear bomb:
Army General David Petraeus told Congress that “the Israeli government may ultimately see itself so threatened by the prospect of an Iranian nuclear weapon that it would take preemptive military action to derail or delay it.”
While Iran insists its nuclear program is intended for peaceful power generation, Petraeus, the head of U.S. Central Command, said “Iranian officials have consistently failed to provide the assurances and transparency necessary for international acceptance and verification.”
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor declined to comment to Bloomberg on Petraeus’ comments, which come a day after the new Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, warned that President Obama “must stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons—and quickly—or an imperiled Israel may be forced to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities itself.”

Even more importantly, this is NOT something that the world can allow to happen, even if it is a unilateral attack by Israel, as estimates by nuclear scientists show that something like 3 million people will die within a couple weeks of any Israeli attack on the Iranian reactor from radioactive fallout, and millions more will die over longer time periods from radiation sickness and starvation, as the fallout contaminates their food supplies. And let’s not forget a major portion of the world’s oil supply being permanently eliminated due to radioactive contamination. Only a criminally insane fool would launch such an attack….in other words, Netanyahu. Maybe we should preemptively attack Israel to prevent its use of WMD. It seemed to be a good enough excuse for Bush.

If they enter Iraqi airspace, it becomes the duty of the United States to shoot them down in order to protect the Citizens whose country the U.S. is occupying with its military forces.

Imagine that Iran had one of the world’s largest nuclear arsenals, the region’s most powerful air force and army, and financial and military support from a powerful nation, China or Russia, perhaps. What would be the Israeli reaction? Would they meekly accept Iranian domination of the region, or would they take steps to protect themselves, such as developing their own nuclear and space program? And if they did, would they think it was fair and equitable to face economic sanctions and military threats from the world to stop their program? Based on their past history, I’m betting the answer is no.
The world stood by mute while the nuclear club ballooned in the years following the Second World War, as not only the victorious allies, but smaller nations like Israel, Pakistan and India developed their own nuclear weapons and delivery systems. It seems rather hypocritical now to say that it was OK for those other nations to develop weapons, but it is no longer acceptable. Yes, it will mean that some nations we don’t like or trust get nukes, but the same is true of Russia and China, who have been pointing those weapons in our direction for decades. If we follow the anti-Iranian rhetoric, we should have started preventive wars against Russia and China decades ago.
