Coulter Falls For Fake Obama NASCAR Story That Limbaugh Said No One Would Believe

coulter.jpgAs an April Fool’s joke, Car and Driver magazine posted a made-up story on its website claiming that “President Obama had ordered Chevrolet and Dodge out of NASCAR after the 2009 season.” The magazine “pulled the fake story” after it “turned into a sizzling Internet topic,” especially on anti-Obama right-wing websites.

As Media Matters notes, one person who took the joking claim seriously was Ann Coulter. In her Human Events column yesterday, Coulter wrote:

If Obama can tell GM and Chrysler that their participation in NASCAR is an “unnecessary expenditure,” isn’t having public schools force students to follow Muslim rituals, recite Islamic prayers and plan “jihads” also an “unnecessary expenditure”? Are all those school condom purchases considered “necessary expenditures”?

Coulter’s gullibility is especially funny considering that on his radio show yesterday, right-wing icon Rush Limbaugh mocked those who would fall for Car and Driver’s April Fool’s Day joke:

Every professional practical joker such as myself knows: If you really want to pull something off, don’t do it on a day where people are going to immediately doubt it. It’s absolutely silly. Car and Driver has a phony page on the website saying Obama has banned Ford, Chevy, and a bunch of others from NASCAR.

Well, now, who’s going to believe this? Well, that’s not the quite proper way to ask it. All good comedy requires an element of truth in it, and obviously there are people that believe this could come down the pike. But it hasn’t yet. Run this story tomorrow, if you want to play a practical joke on people.

As of this posting, Human Events has not corrected Coulter’s column.

I read Coulter’s column this week — and found it to be full of her usual drivel. She will glom onto anything in print to bolster her vitriol and really doesn’t care if it’s true. And if she’s cornered with the truth, she’ll play the victim and complain that she’s being picked on while inventing lies that liberals allegedly tell.

Not only did she fall for the NASCAR story (and don’t look for any retraction or acknowledgement that she was suckered), she posts more crap that she apparently made up on the spot. I mean, really — what public schools are forcing students to “follow Muslim rituals, recite Islamic prayers and plan jihads”? Did I miss something?

Ann Coulter is a joke. There’s not even really any way one could parody such a person — is it possible to be more extreme or bizarre than the original in this case?

I agree Ann Coulter is such a joke she’s hardly worth anybody’s attention. But this item serves more to make us laugh than to enrage us.

During the presidential campaign last year, Ann Coulter was asked in an interview why she constantly referred to Obama as “B. Hussein Obama”, and she replied, “because it’s funny!” (apparently she never learned a joke loses something with each retelling).

Well, some of us think this pompous self-righteous slinger of evil getting punked by an April Fool joke is pretty funny, too. And I suspect that’s why Matt Corley posted this — because it’s funny.

TP doesn’t shine a spotlight on Coulter very often — most of us agree she really isn’t worth it. But don’t deny us an occasional laugh like this one.

But the line between religion and culture is often blurry. There are strong indications that religion plays a central role at TIZA, which is a public school financed by Minnesota taxpayers. Under the U.S. and state constitutions, a public school can accommodate students’ religious beliefs but cannot encourage or endorse religion.

TIZA raises troubling issues about taxpayer funding of schools that cross that line.

Asad Zaman, TIZA’s principal, declined to allow me to visit the school or grant me an interview. He did not respond to e-mails seeking written replies.
    .
    .
    .
Journalists whom Zaman has permitted to visit TIZA have described the school’s Islamic atmosphere and practices.

“A visitor might well mistake Tarek ibn Ziyad for an Islamic school,” reported Minnesota Monthly in 2007. “Head scarves are voluntary, but virtually all the girls wear them.” The school has a central carpeted prayer space, and “vaguely religious-sounding language” is used.

According to the Pioneer Press, TIZA’s student body prays daily and the school’s cafeteria serves halal food (permissible under Islamic law). During Ramadan, all students fast from dawn to dusk, according to a parent quoted in the article.

    ________________________________________________________

I haven’t been able to find any reference to anything remotely close to what she’s blathering about. I remember a story a year or two ago about a school finding a place for a Muslim student to pray privately during her lunch hour (don’t remember where, though), but it’s really a stretch to spin that into following Muslim rituals, reciting Muslim prayers, and planning jihads.

It’s possible it’s a result of MUSH (Make Up Sh!t Hastily). I suspect Ann uses that technique a lot.

Nowhere in the article to which bit links is it alleged that any students are “forced to follow Muslim rituals, recite Islamic prayers and plan jihads“.

The article refers to a charter school in Minnesota that serves low-income Muslim students, mostly Somali immigrants, and is sponsored by Islamic Relief USA, a San Francisco-based Muslim charity.

The article includes this scary-sounding background on the charity:

Islamic Relief-USA, the school’s sponsor, is compared to the Red Cross in several TIZA documents. In 2006, however, the Israeli government announced that Islamic Relief Worldwide, the organization’s parent group, “provides support and assistance” to Hamas, designated by the U.S. government as a terrorist group.

Of course, the Israeli government could have no ulterior motive at work to cast suspicion on a group that “provides support and assistance” to Hamas, now, could they?I mean, it’s not as if humanitarian aid to Palestinians could be described as such or anything.

I dont think you really understand the liberal view of seperation of church and state. I am a serious lefty. I am also a religious person. I have no problem with religious accomodations made at a school. I went to schools for decades where they didnt serve meat on Friday as an accomodation to the Catholic Church. I have no problem with an area being set aside for VOLUNTARY PRAYER. As long as school administrators or teachers are not leading that prayer IN CLASS where everyone must either join in or seperate themselves. I personally dont get why anyone would be so weak in their faith that they needed a government imprimateur on or advocacy FOR their religion. This school seems to me to be skirting close to the line. Is Coulter spewing rhetoric based on fallacy anything new?

  93. jedzep says:

Faulting Ann Coulter for believing every nut-job theory that falls in her lap, would be like me falling for every single one of her half-wit, boneheaded quips about liberals and socialism.
Oh, wait a second, I do beleive her. I watch Fox News, and they tell me that there is a liberal agenda against America. That’s why I watch Fox. They make me scared and want to have an enemy. That’s also why my new enemy has become the people who question Ann Coulter and her viewpoints.
What logical person could actually think that Obama wouldn’t try to destroy the automotive industry through Nascar regulations. Ann was right. She always is. I like the fact that she knows she’s never wrong, and that if I disagree with her, she will always set me on the “right” path towards compliance. I also will applaud Ms. Coulter, because in her alternate universe (in which we all reside) this issue is very important to all of us who oppose Socialism, Marxism, Education, Health care, and a brighter future.
Ann, please keep yapping away, changing history, diverting attention from the real issues, keeping communism out of America, and keeping us heading down the road to the American dream. You are an American hero.
You are the most disputed hero in modern American history. Mankind, in it’s mere essence, has been eternally graced by your superior and infinite wisdom.

Did the School of Jihad just pop up in the last two months, or was it started during the Bushwhacked Administration? Maybe it was one of Bush’s faith-based initiatives…

Is Glen Beck the result of unnatural acts between Coulter and O’Reilly? Or maybe Joe the plumber is their demon love spawn.
    Just wondering.
