Gingrich’s Fantasy War: Taking ‘Preemptive Actions’ Against North Korean Missiles With Lasers

Late last February, North Korea announced that it was preparing a rocket launch in order to — allegedly — put a communications satellite into space. While U.S. and allied officials widely believe “the launching is a cover for testing technology for a long-range missile that could carry a nuclear warhead,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates said last Sunday that the U.S. has no plans to militarily disrupt the launch.

But Newt Gingrich believes military action is necessary. Last night on Fox News, Gingrich said “we should be very worried,” referencing a “novel” he read about a nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack which “could eliminate all electricity production” in the U.S. “[W]e would go back to a pre-industrial era overnight, in seconds,” Gingrich warned. “It’s a very serious threat”:

GINGRICH: I don’t think North Korea should be allowed to launch missiles. I think we should take whatever preemptive actions are necessary. The idea that we’re going to suddenly be shocked one morning as one of these missiles has a nuclear weapon and does something that dramatically changes America I think is a very dangerous idea.

Continuing his fantasy, Gingrich then likened a lack of action on North Korea (and Iran and Hamas) to what “we did in the 1930’s about Adolf Hitler and Nazism.” He argued that “changing the regime is the only way to change the behavior,” but if all else fails, the U.S. should use lasers to wipe out the missile. Watch it:

As the Washington Post noted, “North Korea’s missiles are inaccurate and decades out of date,” and experts “agree that North Korea is probably years away from putting nuclear warheads on long-range missiles that could hit the United States.”

Moreover, the International Crisis Group has warned against overreactions of the type Gingrich displayed:

“[A]n overblown response would likely jeopardise the Six-Party Talks to end North Korea’s nuclear program. What is needed is a calm, coordinated response from the key actors to raise pressure on Pyongyang to return to the talks rather than a divided reaction that only fulfils the North’s desire to widen splits among its neighbours. [...] An overreaction to the test that prompts the North to abandon the Six-Party Talks would strengthen hardliners in Pyongyang.”

Gingrich appears to enjoy engaging in hyperbole as of late. Just last week, he warned that President Obama’s policies are taking the U.S. toward “dictatorship.”

Also catch the quote from a NYC paramedic who reported seeing a plane hit the tower but heard “nothing”. The military has a lot of hi-tech weapons out there, and I hate to think who they’re aimed at.

    Please……Newt!

  39. jjm says:

Republicans especially Gingrich will say ANYTHING to keep their name in the news. It’s a bit pitiful to see them trying to claw their way back into power by any means.

  40. wiley says:

I think 9/11 does need a thorough investigation, but a website that argues for life on Mars from those stupid pictures is just poisoning the well.

  41. SKdeAnt says:

OK, we could use lasers to take out their launch. We would be complete jerks to do so, and open ourselves up to any other country doing the same (or worse) to us.
NK is not about to nuke us, they know they would be instantly squashed by us, China and Japan combined.
But the craziest part of this is that soemhow, Newt thinks that there could be an electro-magnetic pulse ony within our borders? How the heck does he suppose that would happen? I believe that the EMP would be a global occurence if it happened at all, so NK would be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Of course, Newt doesn’t really believe any of this, it is not any kind of threat, he is just stirring up fear. Go GOP!

  42. 666cicadas says:

Sorry folks, for contributing to the derailment of the thread, but 9/11 truth is still very important and hasn’t been brought up in a while.

    Hoodathunktick Says:

“And just what could be investigated?”

The physical evidence is just a red-herring and isn’t necessary for an investigation. All the molten steel, thermite etc. is not important when they could begin with who was in charge of NORAD (Dick Cheney) on 9/11 directing the jets (who were conducting excercises for hijacked planes striking buildings) away from the real planes.

And why investigations of the highjackers were cut off by the Justice dept etc.

There’s plenty to choose from. All of the conjecture w/ no proof is a complete waste of time (IMO).

    CB_Brooklyn Says:

“Take a serious look through the link. Put predeterminations aside.”

I did and it smells like misinformation to me, so I’m calling it out. I thought it was pretty cute of it to mention a warning about “misinformation”, though. They get cute points for that.

  43. Hoodathunktick says:

Why can’t Republicans restrict their fantasies to diapers and hookers?

  44. pbeeg says:

CB, you’ve uncovered the truth: Barack Obama was indeed born in Kenya. And then he moved to America, gave birth to a hologram that he deceptively called Barack Obama, and started his half-century-long career of fiendish deception.

And his voice is done by James Earl Jones!

  47. Mathazar says:

I’m sure there’s some people here who can remember M.A.D., and I’m sure the North Korean’s know that the instant a missile is launched , we’ll be tracking it to it’s apparent destination.

If any harm should come to America or it’s allies, they must know that we could bomb them to the stone age,( pretty close to where they are now ), using conventional weapons of course, to avoid contaminating their neighbors.

To think that we should be concerned about an imaginary EMP, from a third world village on the other side of the planet is ludicrous .

Well, if its these 300 some odd transformers Newt is talking about it doesnt need to be an EMP weapon

The next solar maximum is expected to occur in 2012. New Scientist reports that Mike Hapgood, head of the European Space Agency’s space weather team states, “We’re in the equivalent of an idyllic summer’s day. The sun is quiet and benign, the quietest it has been for 100 years,” “but it could turn the other way.”

The modern electrical high-power grid magnifies the impact of solar flares. Since the grid is linked into major aspects of modern society, the effects of another Carrington event would be devastating. The National Academy of Sciences report states: “A severe space weather event in the US could induce ground currents that would knock out 300 key transformers within about 90 seconds, cutting off the power for more than 130 million people.” The New Scientist states: “According to the NAS report, the impact of what it terms a “severe geomagnetic storm scenario” could be as high as $2 trillion. And that’s just the first year after the storm. The NAS puts the recovery time at four to 10 years. It is questionable whether the US would ever bounce back.”

points his heinie toward the kite. spreading his cheeks he emits a

powerful laser ray that instantly hits the kite and causes it to burst

into flames and fall harmlessly to the ground.

  54. pete says:

It sounds like Newt is getting his information re. EMP from Jack Van Impe. If you are not familiar with Mr. Van Impe, he’s a televangelist with the disgusting habit of saying “Praise Jesus, it’s coming”" and weeping in joy at the prospect of half the World’s population being killed in the Tribulation. He too is wrongly convinced that any atomic explosion anywhere near the U.S. would destroy civilization.

An EMP would be very costly but it’s not the World ending event some would have us believe. Plus I think we should be more concerned with the people directly affected by a nuclear blast. This growing obsession with the effects of EMP is distasteful, because it ignores the horrifying reality of what a nuke would do to people, and it’s fear mongering at it’s worst.

Sure, the North Koreans are going to shoot off a nuclear missile at South Korea or the US. So in retaliation they get wiped off the face of the earth in a heartbeat. Or the Iranians launch one at Israel knowing damned well their country will resemble glass before the dust can settle. What is it about the North Koreans and Iranians? Maybe they have some sort of fetish to experience nuclear annihilation themselves? MAD works, and has kept us all alive since the early days of the Cold War. Nukes are a waste of time and money.

  64. wiley says:

Newt is a neocon, and not to be redundant, but he has close ties with defense contractors that would profit from Star Wars. Comic book threats are second nature to this guy— this isn’t the first time he’s hyperventilated over North Korea.

When the Rumsfeld Commission report was released in July 1998, it quickly emerged as a critical weapon in the drive to shift the debate onto terrain more favorable to missile defense supporters. The report’s key finding was that “rogue states” like Iraq or North Korea could acquire long-range ballistic missiles capable of hitting the United States within “five years of the decision to acquire such a capability,” not the ten to fifteen years estimated by U.S. intelligence agencies. House Speaker Newt Gingrich quickly trumpeted the report’s findings, proclaiming that they represented “the most important warning about our national security since the end of the Cold War.”

Upon closer inspection, the Rumsfeld panel looked less like a balanced assessment and more like a 1990s variation on the infamous “Team B” panel of the 1970s — a team of outside experts brought in by congressional hawks to second-guess the CIA’s official estimate of Soviet military strength. In the case of the Rumsfeld panel, it looked at the same data used in the 1995 National Intelligence Estimate and reaffirmed by a prior independent review convened by former Reagan CIA Director Robert Gates.
