MSNBC announced that it has hired liberal radio host Ed Schultz to anchor its 6 pm hour starting on Monday. The current anchor, David Shuster, will co-host the 3 pm and 4 pm hours with Tamron Hall and substitute as host of Countdown With Keith Olbermann.

Working with the public relations firm that was responsible for the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth campaign, wealthy conservative Rick Scott is crusading against health care reform. However, as the former head of Columbia/HCA, Scott was at the center of “the nation’s biggest health care fraud scandal.” “He hopes people don’t Google his name,” said John E. Hartwig, a former deputy inspector general at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Israel’s new “hawkish nationalist” foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, declared yesterday that Israel “would not be bound by a U.S.-backed understanding to work toward establishing a Palestinian state.” In a “blunt and belligerent” speech, Lieberman said “those who think that through concessions they will gain respect and peace are wrong, it is the other way around; it will lead to more wars.”

Gen. David Petraeus said yesterday that “American commanders have requested the deployment of an additional 10,000 U.S. troops to Afghanistan next year” and that he is awaiting President Obama’s final decision. Petraeus acknowledged that the troops-to-population ratio is “significantly lower than the 20 troops per 1,000 people prescribed by the Army counterinsurgency manual he helped write.”

9: Number of American troops killed in Iraq during March, the lowest monthly total since the war began, according to icasualities.org.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) is today introducing legislation “to set up a permanent federal commission on women just weeks after President Barack Obama created an interagency council to focus the government’s policies towards women and girls.” Women Count, which has a petition urging Congress to support Speier’s bill here.

President Obama, who is attending the G20 summit, “is enjoying a 61% job approval rating at home for handling foreign affairs, up seven points since February.” Obama’s economic approval rating “has slipped slightly, from 59% in February to 56% today.”

At the National Republican Senatorial Committee’s spring dinner last night, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said that “Republicans shouldn’t oppose President Obama as a reflex and should praise him when he succeeds.” “I also think its important for us to nod to the president when he’s right. He will not always be wrong,” Romney said.

Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR) told The Hill yesterday that “he intends to approach Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) on the Senate floor this week to see” if they can craft an alternative to the Employee Free Choice Act, which Specter effectively blocked last week. “I see this time now as really an opportunity for compromise or for a new approach on addressing some of the issues that revolve around that issue,” said Pryor.

If Al Franken is still ahead after Norm Coleman exhausts his options in Minnesota State courts, Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R) “will have a choice: sign the election certificate that will allow Democrats to seat Franken in the Senate or play to the Republicans whose support he’d need in 2012 by withholding the certificate while Coleman challenges the election in the federal court system.”

And finally: President Obama’s limo is “nicknamed ‘The Beast’, and it seems it was designed for wide American roads.” Yesterday, administration staffers struggled to “park the Cadillac outside Downing Street for the President’s meeting with the Prime Minister, eventually managing an unwieldy three-point turn.” Watch the tricky maneuver here.

Stand up to Bill O’Reilly! Join our campaign.

I have nothing against Ed Schultz but I hope MSNBC isn’t going to give Schuster the boot. Schuster has done a great job in that time slot. He has not been afraid to point out to guests when they are lying and his Hypocrisy Watch is terrific. MSNBC shafted Dan Abrams and now it seems like the same fate is going to happen to Schuster.

Scott represents the epitome of why we should rid our nation of for-profit healthcare. That he is now getting paid to work against reform says it all.

    PEACE

On his first day as s foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman said that “those who want peace should prepare for war.” -NYT 4/2/09

    Is this Joe’s brother?

    WTF?

Pair this with recent news from Israel that soldiers’ reports of mayhem, violence & killings of women & children in Gaza this winter have been ‘dismissed’ by ‘Natantheyahoo’ as false and you begin to see that Peace is just another dirty word to today’s Israeli army.

Why don’t these same people ever complain about the military being socialized? Because it works? These morons will vote against their own best interests over semantics…. Sheesh!

Should its tyres be punctured, the car can still drive at up to 60mph

Pretty cool. I want one of those….. i guess all I need is 250,000 bucks… the NRA assault gun folks will certainly back my personal need for the rocket propelled grenade launcher. And I’d like to request a turret, please…

After the last court decision in favor of Franken I would think that Coleman is done.

Not enough pressure on Pawlenty to do the right thing and certify this contest. Pawlenty is holding the whole process hostage.

I’m super excited for The Ed Show, but why not put him on at 6 as a lead-in to Keith instead of re-running Hardball? Or, if you want to re-run Hardball because a lot of people miss it because they’re still at work, why not put on Eddie at 10 ET instead of re-running Countdown? I, too, really enjoyed Shuster on 1600.

Hey cagey you need closer to $500,000 for a Beast of your own. And for the record “The Beast” does not have rocket launchers it is equipped to withstand attack from rocket propelled grenades.

I’m excited about Big Eddie getting a shot at the bigs. According to Keith Olbermann last night the line up is going to be Schuster from 3-5, Ed @ 6, Tweety @ 7, the Keith followed by Rachel @ 9. I’d love to see MSNBC put Stephanie Miller on at 10p.

  11. Zimzone says:

I went to college with Ed & have known him for 30+ years.

Those of you who listen to his radio show know what to expect.
For those of you who haven’t, be prepared for a new profile in news analysis. Ed will call a spade a spade, regardless of Party. He’s not afraid to question authority. He’s not afraid to ask the tough questions in an interview.

Congratulations, Ed. You’ve worked hard and long for this opportunity. America needs multiple voices & viewpoints. Ed will give us this.

I don’t always agree with Ed, but I’d rather listen to someone pursuing the truth than Hate Radio & TV Terrorism.

Wouldn’t it be great to see him go toe to toe with Hannity?

Faux News and the righties will get their knickers in a twist over Ed Schultz – but so what? At least one channel is leaning left, compared to all the others who continue to be far right, and leaning right (CNN hires too many former Bushies, in addition to their own rightwing advocates.)

David Schuster will be on with Tamron Hall for two hours in mid afternoon, followed by Hardball, followed by Schultz, followed by a Hardball re-run, then Olbermann, then Maddow, and a rerun of Olbermann after that.

  14. Pennsylvanianne says:

Congrats to Ed Schultz. I’ll be watching. While some may bemoan David Shuster’s switch to other time slots, we should remember that Shuster made the comment about Hillary Clinton “pimping out Chelsea,” not exactly his finest or most accurate moment. David’s usually pretty good about taking politicians to task who deserve it. Hope there’s room for both.

They love to scream “you libs are just getting a taste of your own medicine. It was oaky-doaky when folks did it to poor Geo W Botch… blah… blah… blah…”

There was point at which Botch had a 90% PLUS approval rating… one of the highest, if not THE highest. of all time. NINETY-F’in-PERCENT.

People DID NOT go after poor Georgie the way Krauthammer wants to go after Obama right out of the gate. It was only after folks realized a turnip had been installed in the WH that his rating dropped.

So when the trolls show up and start sneering and taunting, just point at that 90% plus approval rating and asks, “What’s up w/ that?”

I compare Obama to Hercules who had to clean the Augean stables after years of neglect.

I just copied from the article. But its not worth any real discussion. I think the comment on the rocket launchers may be inaccurate, but it sure is James Bondsey – cinematic in its indiscriminate violent potential.

This is why TP needs a retraction for the UPS thread. If TP doesn’t address its misrepresentation of the comment by UPS, it doesn’t have the moral authority to criticize campaigns like the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.

    UPS SAYS:
Susan Rosenberg, spokeswoman for UPS, previously issued this statement to ThinkProgress (3/30/09):

We are writing to clarify our statement of last Friday because it appears to have been misinterpreted. UPS has not “pulled” any advertising from Fox News nor has the company taken a position on the “Think Progress” campaign. Our intent on Friday simply was to note that UPS does not have any pending advertising plans with the O’Reilly show.

Krauthammer: “It’s a little early to declare a presidency failed-although I would like to do it”

Ah… leave an “out”, so that your comment cannot be pinned down one way or the other. He can say that he did not “declare a presidency failed”, yet he can also say that “I would like to do it”. Have your cake and eat it too?

Making the comment itself seeds the idea, regardless of his teetering qualifications, thus perpetuating and even supporting Rush’s comment, while being able to declare that he does not support it, thoguh he would like to (and, thus, DOES support it, in theory at least).

Oh, what a tangled web we weave (and in so few words… bonus bingo points!).

    hack gag choke

OK. First of all, bobwurst, that’s the same sort of false equivalence that we get stroppy about with trolls — including backup. If TP did something wrong, it matters not at all whether O’Reilly did as well.

I’m also in reluctance agreement with backup about the UPS post, and this is not the first time I’ve observed and criticized this kind of hyperbole from TP, along with occasional deliberate or inadvertent misreading of a statement by some politician or pundit. Absent a clear statement from an advertiser that “we are pulling all ads from The Factor because we are disgusted by O’Reilly’s behavior”, TP has to be very careful about attributions — and they have not been careful at all.

It’s the misleading headline, Dr Moth Matt.

However, TP DID POST the entire UPS statement so that the reader could make up their own mind. But reading only a headline and going off half-cocked with faux outrage is what the right-wingers seem to do best.

Hmmm….Nolies: “it’s a littlee early in the day to shove a baseball bate up Krauthammer A-hole, although I would like to do it” NOW!!!

    F***en IDIOT Krauthammer.

Romney missed his kool-aid ration. What would happen if all the righties thought for themselves, for just one day?

I don’t know if anyone caught this, but a new Pew Research Survey came out showing approval of Republicans at its lowest in 15 years of their surveys:

Sure makes the right-wing rhetoric seem like… well, obviously no one is buying it.

Obama’s Blackwater? Jeremy Scahill on Triple Canopy, the New Lead US Mercenary Force in Iraq and Israel

The Obama administration has confirmed the hiring of mercenary firm Triple Canopy to take over Blackwater’s contract to protect US diplomats in Iraq. Part of the firm’s job will be to protect the “monstrous” US embassy in Baghdad.

    http://www.democracynow.org/2009/4/2/obamas_blackwater_jeremy_scahill_on_triple

The military used to protect diplomats. Contracting out function after function is what incapable managers do.

  62. Mia Kulper says:

MSNBC announced that it has hired liberal radio host Ed Schultz to anchor its 6 pm hour starting on Monday. The current anchor, David Shuster, will co-host the 3 pm and 4 pm hours with Tamron Hall and substitute as host of Countdown With Keith Olbermann.

This is great to have Ed Schultz getting TV time.

But instead of booting David Shuster to the lesser hours as a cohost, I’d prefer to see him move into Hardball and cohost with Chris Matthews instead.

David Shuster is gutsy and tenacious and Chris Matthews needs adult supervision. I can’t bear to watch Hardball most of the time.

But the Ed Schultz thing… excellent!

    TP didn’t report on:

    Israel FM rejects Annapolis deal

Israel’s new ultra-nationalist foreign minister has said it is not bound by a US-sponsored 2007 agreement to reach a peace deal with the Palestinians.

“The Annapolis conference, it has no validity,” Avigdor Lieberman said.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7977002.stm

So far, no comment from new PM Bibi Netanyahu.

But TP did post on Ann Coulter’s latest manifestation of mental illness.
