This morning, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously struck down a state law defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman. The Court ruled that the state legislature had improperly “excluded a historically disfavored class of persons from a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification,” and stated unequivocally that gay marriage bans “denies gay and lesbian people the equal protection of the law.”
Rep. Steve King (R-IA) reacted with fury to the Court’s decision, calling the ruling “unconstitutional” and denigrating the “activist judges” who decided it. He called for an constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and pressed for immediate action to prevent Iowa from becoming a “Mecca” for gay couples:
Now it is the Iowa legislature’s responsibility to pass the Marriage Amendment to the Iowa Constitution, clarifying that marriage is between one man and one woman, to give the power that the Supreme Court has arrogated to itself back to the people of Iowa. Along with a constitutional amendment, the legislature must also enact marriage license residency requirements so that Iowa does not become the gay marriage Mecca due to the Supreme Court’s latest experiment in social engineering.
King is so upset that he’s using rhetoric that combines what may be his two worst fears: gay people and Muslims. A sample of King’s long record of bigotry:
– King compared gay people to unicorns and leprechauns. “Unicorns, leprechauns, gay marriages in Iowa — these are all things you will never find because they just don’t exist.”
– King said Abu Ghraib abuse was just “hazing.” King said in a statement, referring to the abuse, “What amounts to hazing is not even in the same ballpark as mass murder.”
– King sought to uphold anti-gay employment discrimination. “The Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) would force employers to hire homosexual employees.”
– King refused to say ‘Happy Ramadan.’ In 2007, King refused to vote for a harmless resolution recognizing the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
– King insisted homosexuality was just a “behavior.” Declaring that “homosexual marriage is not a civil right,” King said sexual orientation “is a self-identified behavior, not an immutable characteristic.”
Despite the broad economic benefits predicted to flow to a state that allows gay marriage, it seems that the specter of gay couples immigrating to his state is too much for King to handle.
There’s the guy who’s having a bad day!!
Hi Steve!!!!!
How ya doin’ there, buddy!??
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:17 pmThey claimed the same silly shit about VT and Ma with civil unions and all. Thing is it never happened and the sun even still comes up and everything is A-Okay
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:18 pmWhy is it that all the scum bukets get elected????
CH CH CHAN CHANGES….David Bowie.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 pmThis man is a demon. I sincerely hope that men like him fade from America, the supposed Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. What’s unconstitutional, moron, is denying tax-paying, loving, consenting individuals the ability to enter a civil marriage. His declaration that homosexual attraction is a “behavior” is also scientifically and medically lacking.
His hatred for all Muslims and unique Americans depresses me.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:19 pmOh and I like that werid shit about leprechauns and unicorns.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:20 pmI suppose before you now it, Kansas will then become a Gay Marriage Medina
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:25 pmwhere did that “K” disappear to? Or shall I say too?
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:25 pmKing: Allowing Gay Marriage Will Make Iowa The ‘Gay Marriage Mecca’
– - New state slogan: “Iowa, where Corn(hole) is King!”
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:25 pmKing would have opposed civil rights too.
Someone’s sexual orientation has nothing to do with his employment, his public life, and his rights as a citizen.
King is an idiot, always has been, and he cannot be repaired.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:25 pmlulz.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:27 pmWith all due respect to Iowa, I just don’t see it as a gay “Mecca”—a place you have to go to get married, sure, but nothing so grand.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:28 pmDescribing the Christian Right, Frank Schaeffer sums up these homophobes perfectly:
“It’s not a big percentage, it’s just a loud percentage. This is the drunk on the subway making all the trouble at the end of the car for all the people on the subway. There’s a hundred decent citizens in there and there’s one ass at the front end who is molesting women. That’s the Republican party now in terms of the loud part.”
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:29 pmIs This the most important thing in the World??? Financial meltdown, impossible deficits, terrorism, overpopulation, global warming, just to name a few Serious issues, and Representitive Don Quixote chooses This windmill?? Republican idiocy digging deeper and deeper, as usual.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:34 pmTwo quick points: first of all, if they draft an amendment and vote on it, the Supreme Court will just declare it unconstitutional again. If Mr. King had read the decision, he would understand what he was talking about.
Secondly, I wonder if he’s ever been to a gay wedding. I’ve been to two (one in CA when they were legal and one in MA) and those guys go ALL OUT. I’m talkin’ huge cake, top-notch food, flowers out the wazoo (figuratively, of course), streamers, flutes and trombones playing, they invited just about everyone they’d known since the first grade. It must have cost a fortune. Now regarding Iowa (go Hawks!) as a gay marriage mecca, that would bring SO much money into the state. Considering it’s the only place west of the Atlantic Coast that has legal gay marriage, every gay couple from WA to KY will want to get married in IA because it’s closer and probably cheaper. His argument is based in fear and nothing else, because the economic argument is so powerful in favor of gay marriage.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:35 pmFunny he should use the word “mecca” when he is so blatantly anti-Muslim.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:35 pmKing said sexual orientation “is a self-identified behavior, not an immutable characteristic.”
And in King’s case, “stupid” is not a self-identified behavior; it’s an immutable characteristic.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:36 pmGay Mecca? Why, do gay people face towards Iowa while listening to Broadway musicals or something?
King’s a big racist bigot, it’s a shame he has to share the good Reverend’s last name.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:36 pmOn one hand, good work by the Iowa Supreme Court. On the other hand, Steve King, yikes. I think we in Iowa should consider the tourism aspect of this situation. I would be happy to see weddings going on all the time!

April 3rd, 2009 at 3:41 pmI would guess, if you live in Iowa and you’re gay, you were most likely born there. I can’t see too many gays moving to Iowa. I mean really! iowa?
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:41 pmWhat’s hiding in this Reich-winger’s closet to get him so upset?

As a proud Iowa Alum, I suggest historic Kinnick Stadium. Not only does Kinnick sell out every Saturday (seating 74,397 screaming Hawkeyes), but it’s also the only college stadium in the country with a pink locker room! How awesomely gay is that?! Not to mention former Award Winning Golden Girl Diana Reed is currently an actress on Broadway and while she was baton twirling at Iowa she also made all of her own shiny sparkly gold sequin costumes. Foxy.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:44 pm.
The only threat I pose to straight marriages, is to closeted husbands.

Well, Mr. King I guess equal rights are not to be equal in your eyes…
….or somehow ‘Gay marriage’ is going to destroy your marriage…
….or just maybe you are another ‘Closeted Gay Republican’
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pmWho won the pool guessing who would be the first to cry out, “activist judges“? I was hoping that a troll would beat the speed of news but, it looks like Rep. King earned the gold medal. Now that the official GOP talking point has been thrown out there, I suspect our trollish pets will join the fray.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pmTo paraphrase FDR…the only thing we have to fear is the people who are afraid.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pmIt’s fascinating that people like that don’t see the blatant discrimination.
The ‘one man, one woman’ thing is too broad, isn’t it? Shouldn’t it be narrowed to opposing-sex-couple that are able to reproduce? No prepubesent or post-menopausal women, no impotent men, no viagra poppers; of course no divorce or infidelity. Also no drug addicts or terminally ill. Include all that and then marriage would trruly be sacred.

__________
Might be kinda big for people to walk around – let’s make that the Gay Marriage Masjid al-Haram…
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pmI have 2 things to say here:
1. Another paranoid, hyperbolic conservative prediction that will never happen.
2. You know we’re talking about IOWA here, right King? Nothing short of free blowjobs or hiring fake tourists is going to get people to come to your flat, boring cornhole.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:49 pmA few notes for King:
1. When gay marriage becomes legal in Iowa on April 24, it won’t be the only place in the country where it is. It’s been legal in Connecticut and Massachusetts for awhile now, and neither state has fallen into the ocean. Furthermore, we are next door to AN ENTIRE COUNTRY where gay marriage is legal (Canada — in case you didn’t know), and they’ve managed to survive.
2. If I was a resident of Iowa, I’d say bring ‘em on. Weddings are big business, and Iowa (like any other state these days) could use the economic boost. But you’d better move quickly before neighboring states legalize gay marriage and grab some of that business.
3. By using “Mecca” in that sneering tone, are you trying to conflate gay marriage with Islam? That’s kind of hilarious, since devout Muslims tend to be a mostly socially conservative bunch and probably agree with you on the gay marriage issue. But we know how much you hate Muslims, so it’s no surprise you’d jump at this chance.
4. Fewer gay couples will be traveling to Iowa (or to Connecticut, or to Massachusetts) to get married when more states legalize gay marriage (and that’s where the trend is going whether you like it or not), so the hordes-of-gays-to-Iowa thing will only last for awhile, if at all. I suggest gritting your teeth and waiting it out. And while you’re waiting it out, you can ponder how loving couples practicing committed monogamy affect you so negatively.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:53 pmand, Mr King, passing a constitutional amendment that is illegal ain’t going to fly far. In case you hadn’t noticed, your state Supreme Court actually understands laws and constitutionality and such.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:54 pmThat’s some funny sheeyat. you really think gays would give up their true mecca, provincetown on cape cod where they can get married on the beach under massachuessetts law for crappy-assed iowa?
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 pmHis argument is based in ignorance as well as fear. Or in his case, I should probably say stupidity instead of ignorance.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 pmAs far as I can tell, most heterosexual marriages are “ruined” by…
(GASP)
HETEROSEXUALS!
I say we call for an amendment banning divorce.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:55 pmThat would protect the integrity of marriage, eh?
(I make no claim whether said proposal would increase murder and/or suicides.)

April 3rd, 2009 at 4:01 pmso, rep. king, can you please explain to the nice people how denying an entire population their rights is constitutional?
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm2. You know we’re talking about IOWA here, right King? Nothing short of free blowjobs or hiring fake tourists is going to get people to come to your flat, boring cornhole.
Hey hey hey! Iowa has a lot to offer! Iowa 80 is the world’s largest truck stop, complete with a full-size truck wash and a Dairy Queen! While you’re in town, be sure to visit historic South Bend, IA, home to the world’s largest statue grotto (although the whole place is pretty cultish…a very very very Christian conservative area so be sure not to bring the gay). There’s also Lake Okoboji, every Iowan’s favorite Summer vacation spot, if for no other reason than the fun hoodie you get to wear while everyone tries to figure out what an “Okoboji” is. And with regard to Iowa being a flat cornhole, it’s actually remarkably hilly and corn falls behind sorghum and soy in production level. I LOVE IOWA!

bit further believes Christ’s remarks clearly define marriage for all those who believe in Christ;i.e., Christians. March 30th, 2009 at 10:04 am
PLCMR is certain that this quote is compatible with the progressive view on gay marriage which PLCMR holds, i.e. that those who want to follow their interpretation of the Bible as prohibiting gay marriage do not have to marry someone of the same gender and those who have different beliefs should be able to follow their own conscience and marry whom they wish. Only such a stance protects freedom of religion.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:11 pmOh, that’s just delicious. Suffer, Steve, you hack. Suffer.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:12 pmSo I guess there ARE unicorns in Iowa!
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:14 pmAnd to whoever it was dissing Iowa up thread as being flat and boring – you’ve obviously never been to Iowa. It’s a beautiful state with rolling hills and gorgeous green fields and meandering rivers, and the people (well, except for King and his army of ditto-heads) have a wonderful self-deprecating sense of humor that you don’t see very often. They got it right in the movie, Field of Dreams:
‘Is this heaven?’
‘Nah. It’s Iowa.’
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:17 pmI’ve been to Iowa, saw LOTS of rolling fields of corn.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pmSuddenly there appears at a downtown Des Moines court house two male leprechauns riding on a unicorn. The one leprechaun shouts out:
“Me mucker an’ oi are ‘ere ter be married!”
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:24 pmHey, Stevie Boy, how about a constitutional amendment banning STUPIDITY!? You’d be the first to go, moron. I’ve been to Iowa; gay people are most definitely NOT going to flock there to get married. No vacation resorts. No coastline. No mountains. No breathtaking scenery for wedding picture backdrops. One stinkin’ Interstate Highway, which is so dangerous that even hardcore bikers doing Sturgis avoid it. Take a pill, bud, and chill out.
I think this guy is channeling his literary namesake and scaring the BeJeezus out of himself.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:26 pmGive it up Steve and officiate at David Dreier (R-CA) and his husbands wedding. It’d be good for tourism.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pmI’m with dbadass. I’m getting concerned for bit’s welfare.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:37 pmI hope that King does not get re-elected. This antiquated mode of thinking needs to be shutdown. There shouldn’t be any place in government for this kind of attitude. It seems as if people like King think they can stamp out ‘the gay’ in themselves by banning and demonizing homosexuality.

April 3rd, 2009 at 5:06 pmOOPS! LMAO! Sorry y’all!
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:07 pmIowa is corn and pigs. Idaho claims taters because there isn’t much else there that can be exported.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:07 pmKing calls the ruling unconstitutional, but it’s very constitutional and he calls for an constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which would be very unconstitutional.
Fine, the idiot can express his opinion, but it makes me angry that he can get away with it.
Equal protection, King…someday you may really need it.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:10 pmWhy would Iowa become a gay Mecca when gay marriage is already legal in Massachutsets and Vermont?

c. Been Raptured and left us atheists looking like fools.
April 3rd, 2009 at 6:07 pmThe Eastern edge of Iowa, i.e. the Mississippi River, is quite beautiful. Dubuque, although unlovely in itself, is set in a beautiful hilly area.
April 3rd, 2009 at 6:21 pmMuscatine is actually quite pretty. My favorite, though, is Sabula. It’s across the river from Savanna Illinois by a towering narrow steel bridge with a spectacular view, and is the only island city in Iowa. It’s surrounded by lovely lakes and bird-rich wetlands.
I can’t say much for any of the state further west, but that part’s quite beautiful.
Why would Iowans wish to progress culturally, intellectually, morally and ethically when they have it so nice as things are?
April 3rd, 2009 at 6:28 pmHey Kewl Kids, feel free to insult King all you want, he’s not my Representative, but please don’t insult our home.
If you want beautiful scenery in Iowa, check out the NE corner of the state. If you want to go to a liberal mecca in the state check out Iowa City. If you want lakes and boating check out Lake Okoboji. If you want to check out amazing church architecture check out Dyersville.
We’re not as backward as some of you are commenting. Oh yeah, we do have a lot of cornfields.
April 3rd, 2009 at 6:29 pmVery true, madstork123.
Iowa is a great place to live, or visit, and is home to many wonderful people. People could learn a lot from Iowa or my home state of Minnesota, just so long as they don’t take their cues from Rep. King or our own national embarrassment, Rep Crazy Shelly(Bachmann).

April 3rd, 2009 at 7:47 pmMadstork123, you give a pretty fair defense of Iowa, at least the river edge. You contradicted almost every one of my knocks. BUT, you still have I-80, and there is no defense for that. By the way, my sister-in-law and her husband have done a wonderful job in their rehabilitation of downtown Muscatine. It is definitely worth the time to go check out Pearl Plaza.
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:55 pmSteve King (R-IA) sounds like an angry closeted gay man– fighting against any rights for gays/lesbians, ashamed of what he is. Is there an airport restroom near his home?
April 3rd, 2009 at 8:05 pmThis is to be expected. This is all part of the end time prophesies. If our churches weren’t full of candy coated self-love and hypocrisy maybe the presence of God would be evident in them. When the presence of God is moving, people (like myself), would become broken, fall on their faces before God and WANT to become like Christ instead of doing what “feels” good. Sin is doing what we want to do…and boy are we good at that. Maranatha ~ Come LORD Jesus, come. Jesus didn’t hate, but people sure listened to Him and amazing changes happened in and to their hearts.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:03 pmI may have misunderstood you, muga1995, and I mean no offense.
That being said, we don’t need to modify our superstitions. We need to eliminate them from rational debate. We must stop looking to what is outside the physical universe and limit ourselves to real, observable, and quantifiable facts.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:32 pmRep. Steve King (R-IA)
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:42 pmI am sure this guy crawled out of a swamp somewhere and I wish he would go home. You talk about polarizing a debate.
His statements did not serve any arguements he was trying to make. He was playing for the right wing “lets see how bad we can get” crowd. This topic deserves a serious debate, not this bullsh#@.
mugga1995:
What are you talking about? What are you trying to say? Do you mean King is saying what makes him “feel good” even if it’s offensive to others? We are all wonderfully and beautifully made by God and God does not make mistakes. I believe GOD makes us all different(gay, hetero, etc.) and that we are supposed to love one another. That’s how people will know that you are his disciple or follower. Your ‘prophet-lying’ has nothing to do with anything. You religious nuts make good christians look bad with all of your nonsense talk.

Not on furthering one groups agenda. Your can be as hard on yourself as you want. But this issue is about law and freedom. Not religion. Don’t force your opinions on everyone else. That’s a different kind of government, altogether.
April 4th, 2009 at 12:09 amWell what do you know? ANOTHER re-thuglic homophobic asshat.

April 4th, 2009 at 10:11 amOld Uncle Dave Says:
“When marriage is outlawed, only outlaws will have in-laws.”
LOL
When in-laws are outlawed,
April 4th, 2009 at 10:17 amI’ll be happy…
Not even marriage would convince most gay people to stay or move to Iowa. Sneaking out in the corn stalks to explore sexuality gets old after awhile.
April 4th, 2009 at 10:39 amThen they get drivers licenses and move to the back seat.
April 4th, 2009 at 10:46 amI won’t claim absolute knowledge about whether homosexuality is genetic, environmental, or choice – but it strikes me that people who claim it’s only the latter must also then admit that their own heterosexuality is a choice.
That’s the best response to these zealots:
“If it’s a choice, does that mean you have other … urges?”
April 4th, 2009 at 1:00 pmGay/same sex marriages have been legal in various countries throughout the world since 2001. I would like to know what negative affect Steve King, or anyone else for that matter, have suffered by this? IMO, Steve King is a bigot and a peddler of hate.
April 4th, 2009 at 2:44 pmCalled: “a supremely important civil institution without a constitutionally sufficient justification” but, is it true?
Suppose two people, aged 14 or less, want to get married, would that be “sufficiently justified”?
Suppose three people aged 24 or more want to get married, would that be “sufficiently justified”?
Suppose three people one aged 24 or more and two aged 14 or less say they “want to get married” is that “sufficiently justified”?
Who decides and on what basis do they decide? Do we agree the Founding Fathers wrote nothing in the Constitution on that?
For over a century, most states accepted “Common Law” marriges that required no government approval.
Many states and countries allow a contractual commitment between adults and between family members to accept specified contractual obligations for another. But, that is not the issue, that right already exists. Is it to force others to call some “white”, “black” or “yellow”, even if some think they are not?
Obviously, they call themselves whatever they want to call themselves, the only ones left to be convinced are “others” but it is not really about convincing but about by law demand the use of a “magic” word that changes nothing.
If someone is accidentally called “old” should we make it illegal and force everyone to call everyone else “young”, which some, including my relatives, would say I am not?
April 4th, 2009 at 8:04 pmI don’t know how in the hell this guy can even be in politics. He clearly does not grasp the concept of the separation of church and state. What this means, Rep King, is that you can throw gays out of your church, but you can’t deny them their rights of State. Get it?
April 4th, 2009 at 11:04 pmMugga says: “This is to be expected. This is all part of the end time prophesies.”
Apparently, you have no idea what the end-time prophesies are about. They are about the end of the idolotrous notions encouraged by the various religions and indoctrinated into the masses by threat of death, hell, shunning, etc etc. The end-times is THE END of these insane machinations.
“If our churches weren’t full of candy coated self-love and hypocrisy maybe the presence of God would be evident in them.”
Even Jesus couldn’t stand the Temple anymore. And, lo and behold, guess what? The end-times have come and brought with it the ‘New Age’. One no longer requires a church, a temple, or a shrine to be one with GOD.
“When the presence of God is moving, people (like myself), would become broken, fall on their faces before God and WANT to become like Christ instead of doing what “feels” good.”
Yeah… sure. This is just another of the end-times baloney that requires revision. Becoming ‘broken’ is not the answer. Having humility is. There is a huge difference. That difference being that ‘becoming broken’ is a false piety and serves absolutely no one (save one’s own egocentricity), including GOD. Having ‘humility’, however, engenders compassion and graciousness in the recognition that WE ARE ALL GOD’s CHILDREN.
And this business about what not doing what ‘feels good’. Are you saying that Christ didn’t feel good about what he was doing? how was living? Are you implying that he was an ascetic, in your view, and that we should all be ascetics?
See what I mean about the end-time prophecies? It is just this kind of insane idolotry that is being replaced, which is why you guys are so freaked-out. What you completely fail to understand is that it is a PERSONAL viewpoint, not a collective one. And since the world has passed you by, of course you feel the world has gone to hell in a hand basket. But it isn’t the WORLD at-large that has actually done so; it is only your WORLD-perspective that has gone down the tubes.
“Sin is doing what we want to do… and boy are we good at that.
No it isn’t. Sin is doing that which one knows to be wrong. Your statement implies that man is never in concert with GOD. That his absolute inherent inclination is to go against GOD.
And, yes, there are many people who knowingly do wrong. But the question is this? Who decides exactly WHAT is ‘wrong-doing’? You say the Bible says. Well, that’s all well and good for you. If that’s what you believe, then you better live your life accordingly. But what about those who don’t believe in the Bible? Or don’t agree with all that is written there? Are YOU, the CHURCH, the various CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS the arbiter of what’s right and what’s wrong? If so, you have set yourselves up as false idols. Which, by the way, the end-times are taking care of as we speak, *lol*
In the end, there is only one relationship. And that is between each human being and their CREATOR. Period.
No one else has the right, the jurisdiction, or the authority to force another to bend to their will. Which is what is so beautiful about our Constitution and Bill of Rights. As the inherent language separates church and State, the laws of the land guarantee every citizen their right to enjoy the same rights as all other citizens.
On the other hand, the church can strip one of their ‘religious rights’ if they don’t tow the line the way the church sees fit.
So, tell me… just who is the actual ‘hater’ here? The church or the State?
Yeah… I thought so.
Maranatha ~ Come LORD Jesus, come. Jesus didn’t hate, but people sure listened to Him and amazing changes happened in and to their hearts.
Sure he did. If he didn’t hate the way things were, he wouldn’t have bothered to act against it. And we’re talking both church (temple) and State here (Rome). He hated them all with such a passion that he got off his butt and tried to do something about it. Of course, it got him killed in the end. But then, that is a quite common occurance. Revoloutionaries often get killed in the act of changing the world.
So… who’s being a namby-pamby candy-coated idolotor here? You are. You’ve got some kind of ‘fantasy’ of Jesus. You’ve placed him on a pedestal. And the end-times are telling you guys that he doesn’t want to be there. Why? BECAUSE IT DOESN’T SERVE ANYTHING. What does Jesus want from each of us? Well, in my point-of-view, he wants for us TO GET OFF OUR KNEES, and our butts, AND CHANGE THE WORLD.
And that includes EVERYONE in it.
April 4th, 2009 at 11:55 pmFriends from Winnipeg and Australia, are STILL cackling over King’s quote that Iowa may become “the gay marriage Mecca.” Say it again, Steve! You’re just too funny!
