On March 11, Sens. John McCain (R-AZ), John Thune (R-SD) and Mel Martinez (R-FL) met with a group of Hispanic business leaders in the Capitol’s Strom Thurmond Room as part of an effort to reach out to Hispanic voters. National Journal is reporting that several participants in the meeting said McCain got “angry” while talking about immigration. At one point, McCain reportedly began referring to Hispanics as “you people“:
“He was angry,” one source said. “He was over the top. In some cases, he rolled his eyes a lot. There were portions of the meeting where he was just staring at the ceiling, and he wasn’t even listening to us. We came out of the meeting really upset.”
McCain’s message was obvious, the source continued: After bucking his party on immigration, he had no sympathy for Hispanics who are dissatisfied with President Obama’s pace on the issue. “He threw out [the words] ‘You people — you people made your choice. You made your choice during the election,’ ” the source said. “It was almost as if [he was saying] ‘You’re cut off!’ We felt very uncomfortable when we walked away from the meeting because of that.”
Thune, Martinez and McCain communications director Brooke Buchanan disputed the idea that McCain lost his temper. “It was a spirited discussion, but this sort of incendiary-type way that some people are characterizing it just doesn’t fit at all the tone of the meeting,” said Thune.
Regarding the use of the phrase “you people,” Buchanan said it was “in response to a question about people in general who had voted for Obama and was not meant to refer to Hispanics.” To imply otherwise is “character assassination,” said Buchanan. But, as National Journal notes, “one person’s straight talk is another person’s vitriol”:
But one person’s straight talk is another person’s vitriol. “My hands were shaking,” one source said. “I was nervous as no-end.” The senator’s comments went on for several minutes at least. And by the end of the meeting, another participant, who had supported McCain in last year’s presidential election, was so shaken by the display of temper that he decided it is good that McCain isn’t in the White House.
McCain has lost his temper over the issue of immigration reform before. In 2007, during a private meeting on the issue, a heated McCain told Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), “f*** you.” Echoing Thune’s current defense of McCain, McCain spokesman Danny Diaz dismissed the spat with Cornyn at the time as a “spirited exchange.”
Yeah, that’s right. GET OFF MY LAWN! You People!
snark
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:51 pmmccain lost his temper?
are you sure?
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:53 pm“Character is what you are in the dark.” -Lord John Whorfin
Seem appropriate, McCain seems to always be in the dark….
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:53 pmThat’s one way to outreach. Why didn’t he just say “Thank’s to YOU people, I lost the election.” The fact that only white guys and the Religious Right voted overwhemingly for Mccain and he lost evryone else doesn’t matter. When it comes to Repugs, It’s never THEIR fault, it is always somebody else’s fault.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:54 pmOh yeah, the GOP is sure gonna get those Hispanic votes. Couldn’t we just talk some aliens into kidnapping the old, white males in this country? Then we would never have to hear from the GOP again because it would no longer exist.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:56 pmReferring to people of color as “you people!” in the Strom Thurmond room. How appropriate!
Old White Man, it’s long past time to step aside, get on that golf cart with Pappa Bush and ride away.
PEACE
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:56 pm“(A)nother participant … was so shaken by the display of temper he decided it is good McCain isn’t in the White House.”
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:56 pmWhere was the participant when news stories were published before the election about McCain’s infamous display of temper? Didn’t those stories give him pause even a little bit? Well, now this participant knows. Too bad he didn’t vote for the candidate who’s cool under fire. But that’s OK. We’re glad McCain isn’t in the White House, too.
This is disgusting. Imagine if President Obama went to a Southern State after a hurricane or went to Appalachia after the recent ice storms and told a gathering of rural Whites “You people made your choice” as a justification for not helping them. The right wing would be up in arms–and rightfully so. The message that this sends is that McCain was only “supporting” the Hispanic causes because he was pandering to get their vote. If he really truly cared about immigration reform, he wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss their concerns.
I’ll go ahead and give him a pass on the “you people” line, though, because as a Black American I’ve heard that line over and over and over and I genuinely think there are a lot of White people who just don’t understand that it can be offensive. If we jump on people every time they refer to a group as “you people,” we’ll end up blue in the face before they understand what’s offensive about it. So I’ll let that one slide but the rest of this thing is really disturbing.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:57 pmMcCain did a pretty good job of keeping a lid on his famous temper tantrums when he was a presidential candidate. I guess now he feels he can relax and be himself.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmRudyard Kipling once said, Everyone is more or less mad at one point. Unfortunately for McWorse, he’s mad on Way too many points. And to think, this is the Best the Republicants had to offer last November.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmThe cracks are beginning to show. I think insane McCane needs to retire right away. What is it with all of these old men in Congress? They just don’t want to let go. Anyway, immigrants need to be patient with our president. Pres. Obama hasn’t been in office 100 days yet. Change takes time.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmI’m surprised McCain didn’t force a bunch of them to clean his limo while he spoke. Spit.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmOn an unrelated topic, how will this affect Mitt Romney’s urge to champion immigration reform as a way of pandering to Hispanic voters? We all know he doesn’t really care about immigration reform, but this can’t help the cause.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmThis is just John’s way of helping out. His way of forming a ‘better union’.
Remember “Fight! Fight! Fight!”? That’s how he does things.
April 3rd, 2009 at 4:58 pmGotta wonder just how many of “those people” the McCain’s employ across their 10+ houses and driving their 12+ cars.

“You people” refers to those being addressed at hand…
… Every Key Note Speaker knows this.
When addressing a Collage Graduation Class, “You People” refers to the Graduates.
When addressing the AFLCIO, “You people,” refers to unions and their members.
When addressing the SEIU, “You people,” refers to the members of the Service Employees International Union.
When addressing ANY audience, “You people,” refers to the audience at large.
And in this case, “You people” refers to the Hispanic crowd Mc(R)age was addressing.
.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:06 pmWe all should be very happy that McCain is not president.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:06 pmA McCaine/Palin administration would be one nightmarish incident after another.
McCain is hot-headed, rich, angry, old, white man.
Brian Cooks says:
It could have been worse. He could have called a black man boy.
THEN we would REALLY see fireworks. He would definitely would have to resign.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:06 pmIf the Republicans are like viruses in the machinery of politics, then McCain is a planters wart.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:07 pmIt may only be a matter of time before the Republican party alienates everyone except wealthy whites and easily-swayed whites who lack critical thinking skills. Is the timing right then for the formation of a new political party to take the place of the GOP as they drift further into the insanity and racism that currently typifies them and their base?

April 3rd, 2009 at 5:13 pmI really don’t understand what McCain hopes to accomplish now. Given his heightened national profile after the campaign, you’d think he would have some kind of path worked out for how he’d like to bring his career to a close.
It could be minority leader, national party chairman, even Governor of Arizona.
Immigration doesn’t seem to be a strong issue for him, at least not with the Latin community, so I’m curious as to why he would attend this event.
I hope he finds his way. I believe he was a good man and can be again, but most of what he’s done lately has been a real disappointment.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:15 pmThere are 14 people dead right now at a shooting in NY, and this website starts bashing McCain and the GOP again.
When are you people going to get it right?
What about talking about immigration and the economy and what we could do to address this kind of problem or prevent it in the future? What liberal policy would prevent that?

Well…a liberal policy that might REALLY stop shootings in this country is really really strict GUN CONTROL LAWS…but we don’t want to talk about that, do we?
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:15 pmWhatever happened in Binghampton sounds like hate crime directed at people taking citizenship classes.

April 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pmNo offense, but maybe you should try to learn to find that kind of news at a general news site.
:]
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pmBecause this is not a general news site.
It’s a blog that focuses on progressive politics.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pmThe Captiol has a Strom Thurmond room?
WTF?
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:37 pmWhy would it be a story here?
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pmMcCain did his best to lie and suck up to minorities during the election as he thought if Bush could do it so could he. Look McCain is as racist as they come and he knows it. But for a vote he’s do anything. He got less minority votes then Bush so it didn’t work. McCain will never let go of the fact he lost the election and will blame everyone for it. It was the title he wanted and he could care less about the people. Look for GrandPa McCain to lose the Senate election and he’ll really show you how he feels.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pmpast…I do see it on the news. That’s where it stays? Okay. I’m sorry.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pmralph…thank you.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:38 pmDuring the campaign, I was filled with despair at the prospect of McCain/Palin winning. So glad, so glad, so glad they lost. Can you imagine what kind of meltdown this man would be in with the stresses that the president has to deal with? And he goes ballistic in a situation that is of relatively little consequence for the world.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:40 pmMcCain seems a bit angry to me.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:42 pmThe shooting story is also still developing, with little real information available and confirmed.
If and when TP does cover it, I’d prefer that they do so with something to add to what everybody else is already reporting, rather than simply add to the noise out there at the moment.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 pmhtspts or what the elf-a-bet soup of troll’s name it is, has a point, it’s the attitudes of those in power, like mccain, who feel free to vent their feelings at minorities, immigrants and others on the fringes of society, that make room for the lunatics with guns to go and shoot people. When you run a campaign like grampy mchateful did, calling President Obama a socialist, a marxist, a terrorist, with fox news and cnn constantly complaining about liberals letting “illegals” run free in our country, sooner or later some idiot with an NRA protected gun is going to kill people. For the good of the country, of course…

I tried. Too many rednecks here in AZ yet. Lots of Dems moving in from Midwest, Northeast, etc.
Repubs here in AZ DEEPLY slashing our education funding. Guess they were embarassed by only being 48th or 49th in per student spending on education. Guess they are gunning for Mississippi or Alabama or whoever has the current glory of having the stupidest kids in America. Remember – stupid kids are future repubs!
Soon…soon.

Wow.
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:56 pmWhy would you hold a meeting with an ethnic minority in the Strom Thurmond room? I mean c’mon really you got to be kidding.
April 3rd, 2009 at 8:03 pmYep, the shooter is a right winger alright. How do I know? Because he lost his job at IBM and then decided to plan a massacre (turned to guns & religion) at the local immigration office, you know, the people he blames for taking his job. Well, thanks to union busting and other nice little “We hate the American worker and want to employ slaves around the world so we can profit!” jerks of the right wing party, we get these kinds of domestic terrorists in our nation lashing out!
The shooter should have showed up at the RNC or Glenn Beck’s office instead to gripe and go on a rampage. See? Would have made more sense if you ask me.
April 3rd, 2009 at 8:07 pmScottsdalian may be making a valid point. But it should be remembered that the McCain temper is well documented and falls in a line with McGrumpy. But the facts behind the shootings won’t be known for quite some time.
But I also see an association with the McCain story which could make it on topic. Specifically, the people who were shot were doing everything right – obtaining legal immigration, working hard, studying hard, taking a citizenship test, etc. only to be blown away.
OTOH the shooter – while motives are presently unknown, it is not unreasonable to guess that one likely scenario is the shooter was pressed by the current economy and inflammed over the angry statements towards immigration. Of course, both repubs and hate radio have directed fire towards immigrants.
While McCain may have seemed more moderate than many repubs on immigration, he has still shown his temper on numerous occaisions. Additionally, the trifecta of hate radio, repubs as a group, and McCain as an individual, have done an extremely poor job of differentiating between legal and illegal immigrants.
So McCain getting upset and degrading into a schoolyard argument against “you people”, whether meaning the people there or hispanics as a whole, is very potentially part of the same string as the strings pulling the shooter.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:12 pmHow right you are, MapleStreet.
It’s long past time to stop allowing the media to keep spreading messages of hate. And it’s time to enact more limits on the purchase of weapons. We can’t eliminate violence in any society but, we have to try to limit the lethality and stop media figures from promoting armed rebellion as a “right”.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:21 pmI realize that facts are still emerging hourly about the shooting, but I seem to recall a report this afternoon on NPR mentioning that the shooter, who was Asian, had some connection to the immigrant center.
I don’t think it will turn out to be as simple as a crazed right-winger or another Bernie Goldberg fan.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:34 pmBut it should be acknowledged that you make some excellent points, Maple Street.
You too, pete.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:35 pmJohn McCain has a dirty mouth. He always has, even as far back as his academy days. His stretch in Hanoi did him no good.
He is a man with a barely controlled temper. And a man with a bigots soul. It is is very difficult for him to stay in check, and sometimes the pressure is too great. And he is old. He has little respect for most people including his own wife. And often his prejudices get in the way. This is the real McCain.
His campaign was filled with this dislike. That is one of the real reasons he was not elected. That and his lack of ideas that were always regurgitated from old, tired, failed policy’s. He is what he is.
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:45 pmpete Says at #117:

How about this as an option: Rather than limiting the rights of people to buy guns – that whole Constitution/Bill of Rights stuff about arming militias, blahblahblah – why don’t we simply limit the ammo.
Tax the ever living shit out of each bullet. Rather than buying bullets for a few bucks a box…add about a $500 or $1,000 in taxes on each box. Folks can still own all the damn guns they want…it’s just going to cost them a shitload of money to actually shoot the damn things.
Heck…we could probably balance the Federal budget with the “Bullets Tax”.
Don’t recall that “piece of paper” (a/k/a the Constitution) saying anything about ‘ammo-ing’ a militia!
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:48 pmThanks, ralph.
But? I realize that the complexity of the issue led me to a misstatement. Rebellion is a right that no government can take away. The oppressed will always turn on their oppressors but, that doesn’t excuse the freaks who call for more guns, defiance, and violence.
People are capable of cooperation if they give each other the chance. Inflammatory crap, like the Becks and Bachmanns are spreading, works against our ability to compromise.

That’s not a terrible idea. After all, cartridges(bullets) are weapons. However. I tend to look at the type of weapon.
As an example; there are weapons that are designed for a primary purpose of killing large numbers of people. The so-called “assault weapons” and high capacity handguns for example. Despite being a lifelong hunter, and shooting enthusiast, I can’t think of a legitimate reason for a civilian to posses an M16 or a handgun that holds 18 rounds.
I have no problem with hunting weapons or target weapons that are optimized for their purpose. What I object to is the loosely regulated purchase of military-style weapons which are optimized for killing people.
April 3rd, 2009 at 10:03 pmpete,
You would make one lously Consertive Republican sounding like this about guns. I agree with you that their is rearonable gun ownership and their is unreasonable. The government has the right to make that distinction!
As for reading this about McCain, he was definitely not presidental material.

Good try kwsventures, but your arguement doesn’t hold water.
1.) The debt being incured right know is an attempt to
perserve finanical infrastructures. The existence of
these orginizations is too critical and would take years
to re-establish. Lossing them would severely cripple our
long term economy. Not good for our children.
2.) The book keeping of the Bush adminstration didn’t
seem to bother your side. Keeping expenditures off the
books kept the publics eye off costs of the Irqi war.
This was dishonest and to Obamas’ credit, he stopped the
practice.
3.) The Republicans seemed to forget that any country need
to be taken care of. We have just witnessed 8 years of
neglect, and a federal government that is disfunctional.
These are expensive problems, and to survive as a modern
democracy, there is no choice, the problems need fixed.
4.) If you are trying to point to any recent Republican
presidents as fiscally responsible, you better turn off
the FOX news channel an read a little history.
5.) The country was handed to President Obama in very bad
shape. Bush was handed the country in great shape.
Don’t try to put this mess in Obama’s lap. You will look like an idiot and will get called on it every time!

April 3rd, 2009 at 11:48 pmAlthough I am not a registerd Democrat nor an Obama supporter, I hope he will elevate the status of the presidency and the USA to newer heights nationally and globally. I accept the fact, as should the GOP, that Obama is our nation’s leader and that we should look ahead to the next four years with a renewed hope for a better America. It seemed to me that in the last eight years our democratic form of government turned into a demagoguery with Bush and the GOP cronyism. Please Mr. Obama, show the world that we can progress into the second decade of the 21st Century and not regress to a past of global fear, turmoil and Armageddon.

April 4th, 2009 at 12:15 amMr. McCain separates the world, in his small mind, as between everybody else and himself. Even the window dressing caricuture of a wife that he carted by his side while he campainged for the most important position in the world is one of “you people” to his sick mind. She’s nothing more than a “c*nt” to him (he exposed that little nugget in a “spirited rant according to some reports during the campaing.
He is the military equivalent to the civilian brat born with a silver spoon in his mouth. That’s why, despite his actual shortcomings in average military officer characteristics, and who really knows what other transgressions besides destroying several multimillion aircraft, he made it to the point of almost manipulating his way to the POTUS.
Let him continue to rant. He exposes his true nature with every continuing blurt that is logically to be expected from him. He’s a sorry-assed, disgruntled loser.

I vote that we start referring to the Republican’t party as “you people”.

April 4th, 2009 at 1:29 pmThis older white female is mighty tired of older white males who seem to think they are “entitled” to tell everyone else what to do, and what to think. Theyhave done such a terrific job of leading this country for the past eight years…right. I watched McCain during the campaign and it didn’t take long to figure out what kind of individual I was seeing. After doing some research on him, I couldn’t believe that he was even in the running. It amazes me to think that the republicans feel that we would be stupid enough to vote that sick old man into office. They are sooo out of touch with the general population.
I’ve enjoyed reading this site and decided to check in and joy in. I appreciate much of the insight of many you and your information is always looked forward to.
April 4th, 2009 at 3:29 pmbutterfly mom Says: Referring to people of color as “you people!” in the Strom Thurmond room. How appropriate!
Old White Man, it’s long past time to step aside, get on that golf cart with Pappa Bush and ride away. PEACE
We are all people “of color” mostly of different shades off-white and most of us are happy to have whatever shade we have.
Most of the people that maintain the 11 homes of Sen. McCain probably got a pay raise by way of an apology. I don’t think McCain, or W. Bush, ever gave a verbal apology, for anything.
Pope John Paul II apologized 182 times, even for things that happened centuries before he was born. Reluctance to forgive implies a willingness to continue conflict -not smart.
I was once told “Hispanics”, you know, people from the land of “Hispania”, do not admit being “people of color”, not for lack of accuracy but, lack of reasonable meaning to the term. To acknowledge to be that which applies to everything on Earth or Mars, where everything is “of color” is too meaningless to include in a vocabulary. There may be other meaningless terms in life but I tried not to clog my memory.
Poor Sen. McCain is too old to notice he is too old to notice that he lost his temper much too often and we are left to wonder not the “color” of the Republicans but “what were they thinking” when they concluded Sen. McCain was the best Republican in the U.S.A. What does that say about their ability to know people, even their “non-colored” people? You know, people without color (my physics teacher would give me an “F” for using such a dumb and meaningless term).

The best thing that can happen to McCain is to get another cancer and just passed away in the desert of Arizona. He’s to old,to decrepit and to out-of-touch to be for real.If it wasn’t for the votes he bought with his wife money from the hispanics voters of Arizona he would not be in the Senate today. To rant against hispanics will cost him his seat if he decides to run for Congress again.Oh,I forgot he’s to stupid to know who had supported him in the past.Thank God he lost the election and his pick for VP was the pits. The Governor is a liar (remember the $150,000 clothes thing),the daughter is a ho,the sister-in-law an indited thief and the daughter’s baby grandmother a drug dealer.WHOW.What a family.Just what the USA needs in the White House and the racists complain about Obama.REEEEEAlly.
