In an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon last month, RNC Chairman Michael Steele explained his embarrassing spat with Rush Limbaugh by claiming that it was a “strategic” move so that he could “see what the landscape looks like.” The Washington Times reports today that members of the Republican National Committee — Oklahoma RNC member Carolyn McLarty and Texas RNC member Cathy Adams — don’t buy Steele’s explanation:
But Mrs. McLarty said, “I don’t really buy that. I think he just said things in his gut that didn’t come out right for conservatives.”
Some RNC members say they no longer know when Mr. Steele means what he says and when his words are meant to be strategically misleading.
“So what is true? Are you really apologetic? We need to know,” Mrs. Adams said.
It shouldn’t be surprising for Steele to hear that people are questioning the veracity of what he says. In February, he told Glenn Beck that he had “absolutely no reason, none, to trust our word or our actions at this point.”
I don’t think Mr. Steele knows what he means when he says something.

April 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 pmTrying to have it both ways is a Republican trademark; they do it all the time.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 pmI don’t know, it seems to be the tactic de jeur for Republicans these days. If there was a single Republican who made sense on a consistent basis…oops, my bad, they wouldn’t be a Republican.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 pmI often employ “Steele Strategic Speaking” in everyday life.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:44 pmThat is, say whatever comes into my head, and if called to task later on any particular point can smile slyly and say
“aha! you’ve fallen right into my clever ruse!”.
Who is the head of the RNC? R(ush), N(ewt) who’s the C? Oh, that’s Sarah…
Thanks but no thanks!!!

I am one of many women who post comments on TP, and speaking only for myself, I find that offensive.
Please drop that particular line of “funny.” Thanks.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:48 pmO/T – a lone shooter opened fire at an immigration services center in NY this morning. A citizenship test was apparently being administered in the building at the time. It’s being reported that 4 are dead already with many wounded and hostages being held.
Good work Lou Dobbs and all of the other rabid xenophobes out there. Way to ramp up the hatred.

Hey, I can be optimistic. :-)
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:58 pmMr. Steele, you’ll look really stylish in sackcloth and ashes, believe me. Now lick Rush’s cyst one more time and you may leave.
April 3rd, 2009 at 2:07 pmI’ll repeat that it doesn’t make sense for Steele to have said anti-Rushbo statements to test the water. Numerous repubs had already done that in the previous 2 weeks and Steele saw the results.
The difference is the conservative pundits are questioning him on this.
Kind of a bad omen for him.
April 3rd, 2009 at 2:08 pmhey steele…don’t resign. fight to keep your leadership. we love the infighting. please keep that gop compass spinning.
April 3rd, 2009 at 2:12 pm“So what is true? Are you really apologetic? We need to know,” Mrs. Adams said.
Is he truly repentant? Does he need to tear out his hair and rend his garments? Maybe he needs to cut off a finger tip. I mean, when you insult El Rushbo you insult all conservatives and without proper repentance you’re going to burn.

April 3rd, 2009 at 2:16 pmSteele’s position: I am in way over my head, have no clue what I could possibly do to save my pathetic butt but if that wannabe plumber can have more than 15 minutes, I want mine too.

Misogynistic slurs* are no less bigoted simply because you dislike the person you think you limit its venom to. Slurs dehumanize and demonize a group of people (In this case, women and girls on the basis of gender). Intolerance and hate is always inexcusable, you bigot.
*Yes, it’s a slur because gender is the ultimate target (think: fa**** being used to condemn “cowardice” by slamming homosexuality). Just as racists once said the n-word wasn’t a slur because it “only” targeted criminal, lazy, or stupid blacks, the attempt to rationalize such hate only makes one look that more foolish. And, no, it doesn’t matter how popular such slurs are (e.g., b****, sl**, etc.), it’s still hate.
April 3rd, 2009 at 2:44 pmSteele is republican……
If you see a republican’s mouth moving….. HE’S LYING!!!
It is that simple!
April 3rd, 2009 at 2:46 pmI think SNL got it right way back when Steele was first given the post. In his weekend update segment, Seth Myers said (to the Republican Party) “You guys DO know that not just any black guy will do… don’t you???”
So now they know…
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:13 pmCAUGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA
In order to gain the political control they’ve enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.
Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don’t have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and “advocate” the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.
The survival of today’s shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America’s increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.
The idiom “caught between the devil and the deep blue sea” is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.
Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh’s storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:34 pmI find myself feeling sorry for these guys and I kind of resent it. They have a duty not to be pathetic. But, I do like the “landscape” reference to Limbaugh. Poetic.
April 3rd, 2009 at 3:51 pmThe Republicans have never told the truth since Eisenhower left office. Not Republican committee members are finally figuring that out? They suddenly figured out they cannot believe themselves? Wow, what stunning news. They must think they are looking in a funny house of mirrors with sound and are walking in circles, just like they led the country. Wonder how they are liking it waking up to our reality.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:14 pmI am so sorry if anyone took my prior comment in the wrong way. I didn’t mean what some might think I meant with the “C” comment. With Sarah being one of the three “ring masters” of the RNC, I truly meant C for CRAZY for that is what she is. After I left the original post I thought some may have taken it the wrong way. I DO NOT ever refer to women in that manner and I never would. I truly apologize if any of you took it the wrong way.
April 3rd, 2009 at 5:45 pmThanks, obama-biden2009.
I guess I jumped the gun. I’ve been called the c-word a few too many times here, so I’m a bit hyper-vigilant.
I appreciate you clearing that up. :-)
April 3rd, 2009 at 7:17 pmI believe that Mikey will be around for a while. The GOPhers are too afraid to be acused of rascism if they fired him.
April 3rd, 2009 at 8:33 pmI liken the GOP these days to the Titanic and having Steele at the helm is only going to ensure it most definitely will sink. I really don’t think the GOP-ers should be afraid of getting rid of him because it will look like racism. The bottom line is that he’s the wrong person for the job…period. Race if not a factor. I’m a 48 year old Canadian male but if I were to have my US citizenship I’d most definitely be a Republican and absolutely would be 110% behind President Obama. After eight horrific years of stupidity and downright illegal activity (um…torture, ignoring the Geneva convention, Cheney (the worst offender of all…), John Yoo, Armitage, and the rest of the nefarious cabal Barack Obama is like a light in the darkness; an oasis in the desert. Michael Steele should just simply step down. I mean, it’s going to take the GOP years and years to repair all the damage they’ve done and I certainly don’t want them to succeed in any way but they don’t have a “snowball’s chance” under Michael Steele. Or really anyone for that matter. Personally, I’m hoping for a Limbaugh/Palin ticket for 2012. Wouldn’t that be just marvellous?!?!
April 4th, 2009 at 4:42 amWhoa!!! Let me just say it is NOT a good idea to post at nearly 5 a.m. Eastern time. Let me correct a couple of things and apologize. One…”race if not a factor” should have been “race is not a factor”. Worse than that was…”I’d most definitely be a Repubican…” Yikes!!!! Um…”definitely be a Democrat….”!!!! Well, I learned a valuable lesson…don’t post when you’re exhausted and check your posts before submitting them!!! Time for some sleep, I think!!! Thanks!
April 4th, 2009 at 4:47 amI think you ought to rename yourselves stinkprogress.org. You put things out there without even checking to see if it is true or not. I guess you have never heard anything about a little thing called integrity. Its not about republican versus democrat or vice versa. We are all being duped and lied to. We are being played one against another. If you don’t believe me then go to google and type in “the obama deception”, watch it and then bring up the bilderberg group and other things that are mentioned in the documentary. Fellow Americans are not the enemy. International bankers are.
