Days After Calling For Laser Attack On North Korea, Gingrich Says Obama’s Foreign Policy Is A ‘Fantasy’
On the heels of a North Korean missile test last night, President Obama said in a speech today in Prague that he wants to put forth an agenda “to seek the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.” “This goal will not be reached quickly — perhaps not in my lifetime,” he said. “It will take patience and persistence.”
When Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace asked Newt Gingrich about Obama’s speech the morning, Gingrich linked Obama’s goal to what he called former President Carter’s “fantasy view of the world”:
GINGRICH: The president’s in a world where Hamas is firing missiles every day into Israel, Iran is building nuclear weapons, and the North Koreans today during — basically during his speech fired a missile, and he has some wonderful fantasy idea that we’re going to have a great meeting next year. [...] I just think that it’s very dangerous to have a fantasy foreign policy, and it can get you in enormous trouble.

It’s ironic that Gingrich is calling Obama’s foreign policy a “fantasy,” given that just last week, he contrived an imaginary war plan in response to North Korea’s planned missile launch. On Fox News last Wednesday, Gingrich said that the United States should use lasers to preemptively attack North Korea’s missile (before it launched) in order to prevent a North Korean nuclear electromagnetic pulse attack on the U.S.
Earlier on the segment this morning, Gingrich said that he would have taken out the missile on the launch pad, though his specifics for how to do so were notably vague: “There are three or four techniques that could have been used, from unconventional forces to standoff capabilities.”

9-11 was probably an act of war. But I’d bet just one plane would probably be not. A couple planes without a skyscraper is tricky but I’d think not. All I can suggest is NATO be forced to retaliate if two or more *coordinated* targets in a member state comprising a death-toll of more than 1000, or one target of 10000, and maybe a dozen of 100 or more, be successfully launched linked to a foreign government. You want to leave room for leeway but at the same time you don’t want trigger-happy NATO members to dissolve/hijack the alliance.

It would need to be a system that hits the missile on launch, not re-entry. One assumes that on re-entry the bomb is armed so the gamma rays from an air burst would still knock out the electrical grid. I also find it hard to believe that a missile launched from a ship from a couple hundred miles off-shore could be intercepted. I also find it hard to believe that a terrorist group could obtain a ship and missile to launch an attack without a State sponsor.
Instead, this is Newt being at his looney “best”. It sounds more like a solution looking for a problem. Any nut can do that.

As to the topic…the threat is to our SATELLITES. That’s the Achilles heel of our military. A pulse weapon in orbit could knock out our spy satellites, and our military would be Blind.
Only an idiot or crazy person thinks that North Korea would attack Alaska with a missile. If they get one , it’s to DETER us from attacking them. Although thousands of conventional artillery pieces pointed at Seoul is a pretty good deterrent already.

It means the world to me that the president is seriously working on the reduction of nuclear arms and making complete disarmament a goal. I don’t expect to see us reach zero in our lifetimes, but our current arsenal is about half of what it was in the seventies. We can make significant cuts, adhere to the NPT, and do a better job of tracking fissile material.
