Iraqis execute six gay men in past 10 days.

An Iraqi defense ministry official reports that at least six gay men have been shot dead in two separate incidents during the past 10 days in a Shia-controlled part of Baghdad. The official said today that three bullet-riddled bodies of gay individuals have been identified in Sadr City:

“Three corpses of homosexuals have been recovered in Sadr City. Two of the bodies, found on Thursday, had pieces of paper attached on which was written the word ‘Pervert.’ The third body was retrieved on Friday,” the official said.

Other dead bodies had the word “puppies” written on their chests. Puppy is a derogatory word used by residents in Sadr City to refer to gays. Witnesses told CNN that a Sadr City cafe, which was a popular gathering spot for gays, was also set on fire.

    – - Umm, if gay Iraqis are summarily killed just for being gay, why are gays gathering in a known popular spot? Isn’t this like ringing the dinner bell for homophobes?

TP, please be more careful with your headlines.

“Iraqis execute six gay men in past 10 days” makes it sound as if the government has officially carried out capital punishment.

While it’s technically accurate , in the sense that it was very likely that Iraqi citizens carried out these crimes, and that it could be said that these men were “executed”, it is misleading.

    You can do better.

Just think what we could have accomplished with the resources that we have flushed down the toilet in Iraq. It’s appalling.

I just finished reading Hooman Majd’s “The Ayatollah Begs to Differ”, about modern Iran and I highly recommend it. One of his central points is that Sharia and democracy can mix well, but the “democracy” is definitely going to look different from Western democracy.

Of course, Iraq is not Iran, but it is possible for a tolerant Islamic state to exist. If the Iraqi government condones or actively carries out homicides like this, there can be no pretense about “democracy.”

Welcome to America– that is, America under the rule of extreme right-wing christian theocratic law, as envisioned by the likes of Dobson, Huckabee, and just about any southern republican politician that you care to name. Robert Heinlein wrote a book in which he described a period of time in an unnamed country which had theocratic law. He called the time the “crazy years”. It’s a fairly prophetic view of today’s current events in the Islamic countrys and a warning of what we would face if the wingers ever get their way.

Gays were much better off under Saddam Hussein’s rule.

    -GSD

Before the Gulf War, it was tolerated with a blind eye. Afterwards…

“The authoritarian nature of the Ba’athist government makes it difficult to gather definitive information about what were the Ba’athist polices with regards to sexual orientation or gender identity. In the United Nations, the Iraqi delegation cited religion, despite being a secular state at the time as their reasoning for opposing efforts to have the international body support gay rights.

Yet, homosexual practices between consenting adults in private were not officially made illegal in Iraq until 2001, when it was made a capital crime. Prior to that point, Iraqi gays and bisexuals who lived during the 1980s – 1990s have since reported that a Ba’athist crackdown on homosexuality and establishments known to function as gay bars took place in the 1990s.

This is also around the same time that the Ba’athist regime lost the first Persian Gulf War, and faced an uprising in northern and southern Iraq, and this crackdown may have been part of a larger attempt by the government to appeal to Sunni and Shiite social conservatives as the early 1990s.

The practice known as “honor killings” were also legalized in the early 1990s, and thus a LGBT Iraqi could face being executed by their kin for bringing dishonor to their family.”

The only two countries in the region that actively tolerate homosexuality are Israel and Turkey…and Israel is the only one that allows for civil unions.

The longer the thread the slower things can get. I don’t have speed issues because I have a fast PC and a fast connection (Cable).

Clearing out your browser cache, cookies, history, and deleting temp files regularly should help.

    ———-

This has nothing to do with Sharia law, but has a lot to do with Iraqis customs and their way of life..
It is just totally unaccpetable to be a gay in their society.

This killing was not done by their government or by an order of judge or a court based on Sharia law or any law, it was simply a cultural thing.

Do you have evidence to support your claim that it was a Sharia law…?!!

Iraq is more Conservative society than some other Arab and Moslem countries like Lebanon for example.
    It is a tribal one.
Such act of being a gay is considered a dishonrong one to the whole tribe, which all carry the same family name.
Something that is very hard for us to understand in the USA.

Sharia law has nothing to do with Democracy..This killing is strictly a cultural thing.
Maliky,Bush or Obama can do nothing about it.

The dishonoring killing is not limited to one sect, religion,or a group in Iraq….it is a society’s order.

  53. dbadass says:

    Hi Agkcrbs
Wanna have a serious talk now?

  54. Rob says:

This wasn’t Iraqi law that instantiated this. The Iraqi police and the coroners suspect that it was their families that did this because nobody has claimed their bodies.

What’s even crazier is this story about how the government is executing gays. Kind of weird that Iraq implemented the death penalty in 2004? I mean, people are killing each other in the street, you’d think death penalty wouldn’t be much of a deterrent to commit crime. Anyway, a number of people are believed to have been “coerced” into pleading guilty to crimes they didn’t commit. Certainly not a good time to be gay in Iraq.

  55. Jacks says:

Misogynistic killings are called “honor” killings there so I’m guess these homophobic killings are similarly “virtuous.”

We need to stand firm when it comes to intolerance and hatred, whether that be on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, color, or any other trait. How can we possibly root out terrorism, when we turn the other way? Bigotry is always inexcusable, and no bigot should be able to hide behind “culture,” “religion,” or “tradition.”

  56. e_to_the_pOTATO BUG says:

    sacopenapa ,

hmm while browsing I couldent help but take issue with your passive aggressive comments. Ive been gay all of my life and I cant tell you how annoying it is to have ignorant citizens such as yourself try to tell me how I “should” be.

You see sacopenapa I am in the profession of truth , that is , I study life and I hope to one day correct it entirely. When I hear the hatred and small minded blithering from individuals such as yourself I frequently question why we even allow such people to exist on earth.

When people like me stop the aging process , finally , when it is humans that give men everlasting life and not god , when the greatest promise of all religion is given to mankind by man himself , When all of your hatred , all of your selfishness and all of the lies that are your religion are laid bare – just what will you be then?

Your reality is based on your paradigm , your paradigm on beliefs , these beliefs can be based on either opinion or fact , truth or lie. The information system you use to make judgements and create your reality , namely your religion , is inherently based in lie and opinion . It also bears the hallmark of the ignorant – What is this hallmark?

That you cannot incorporate new information into your reality whenever it challenges the basic concepts of your religion.
Views cannot be changed with new truth and new fact.

“Why are you talking about my religion Amathius? I was talking about gay people! ”

I know you will ask – It is because your religion defines you.
its hatred consumes you and when it comes down to it the only thing you can do for your race is obstruct it. You can draw a straight line from the variance in development of the western world as compared to the middle eastern world based entirely on the freedom of thought. Religion has ruled entirely in iran and iraq for all of recorded history and it shows.

There will come a time when people will be shown the falsehood of your religions , when god will be shown to be nothing more than a reflection of ourselves , When people will have to take responsibility for thier world , thier brothers and sisters and future generations and you / people like you due to the inherent incapability of your broken reality to incorporate new information – will be left as dust in the past.

Afterall , jesus christ and the prophet did not spread thier words to encourage peace among mankind , they did so to spread fire upon the earth.

    Sincerely yours.

George W. Bush set out to remake Iraq in what most Republicans consider a democracy, i.e., a violent, theocratic, intolerant, misogynistic, homophobic, socially Darwinian, segregated nightmare. It appears that he’s succeeded.

I’m not gay. I’m a man. I’m outraged! Being gay is dishonoring to the entire tribe? We in the U.S.A can’t understand this? This justifies murder? I don’t need to understand this type of “cultural” mindset. This type of “cultural” mindset needs to be removed from the population, by lobotomy, if all else fails. Ignorant 7th century tribalism. Usually they are afraid that we will just steal and free their women but now they start to murder those men who have no interest in enslaving their women? What the F*** is wrong with these morons?

  80. Amathius says:

If a wise man argues with an idiot , you cant tell the two apart.

As is stated and as is proven fact – You cannot argue with truth or fact against opinion and lies. The latter can imagine any justification such is the human mind. Though one exists in reality and the other in human imagination.

Unfortunately , religion , at least those who have been allowed to speak for it , do not operate rationally . To make a religious fanatic listen one must use blunt tools , use changes which cannot be argued with and which cannot be debated. One way or the other , tolerance for such beliefs must be brought into the spotlight and questioned – just as the united states confronted the south over its use of slavery the use of religion on the ignorant is nothing more than a form of mental slavery , with the educated handlers gaining the most from it (see the GOP or Iraq , Iran , etc etc). As the world advances , religion will become more and more obstructionist and defensive as well as outright murderous.

What can be done ? Well simple. One method is to stop the aging process through genetic engineering and therapy. Religions greatest gift (or promised gift) is everlasting life. This is the sole ability of god alone. Grant this – and the precepts upon which the figure of god is based ceases to exist , the fact that it is just an amalgamation of those traits which we dare not take upon ourselves is laid bare. You create an impossible contradiction (even though that is already aparrent for those who learn enough)

Therefore a “blunt” instrument is created which cannot be argued with or debated. A catalyst for change that arguement could never acomplish and against which any amount of phrasing or rephrasing could not guard against. Future generations would see that all of this mess is nothing more than frivolous archaic custom , a dangerous one at that , to be disposed of like hazardous waste.

Barring this – your wasting your time debating them.

“In Islam’s defense, they did give us advanced science, arithmetic, and medicine. Which is more than Christianity has ever given the world.”

On its own, without the petrodollars provided by the technology of the infidel West, Islam has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to advance the human condition since the 6th century.

  82. Grugnur says:

Finally, progress is being made in Iraq! Now if we could only execute child molestors in the US! But, unfortunately, we punish people who mistreat animals more than a queer that molests a human child. I tend to doubt that the Obama administration is capable of the progress that the Iraqis have made, considering Michelle Obama has a queer eye and both Barney Fudd Franks and Nancy Pelosi are anal deviants.
    Love, Grugnur

  83. Try2keepup says:

As a registered independent I am waiting for evidence the GOP had anything to do with this. BTW, it is irrelevant what Americans think about homosexuality. In this case, it is only relevant what Iraqis think about homosexuality. Hand-wringing accusations that Bush or Obama had any influence on these murders is just stupid.

My GOD you are ignorant. What was the point of that post other than to show just how stupid you are and how twisted and sick you have become. Do you LIKE being an ignorant bigot? Is it your aim to be the most dispicable depraved ignoramus in the world? Go back to blowing lepers on the docks fool. No one else is ever going to care what comes out of your mouth

George W. Bush’s version of democracy and freedom.

  86. Bill Perdue says:

This is nothing new, and it’s the result of the US invasion and occupation and nothing else. The US has been arming and training both Sunni police and Shiite militia to target one another’s communities for ethnic cleansing. Both found time to hunt down, humiliate torture and murder GLBT folks. One young man, 14 years old, was hacked to pieces for being effeminate. (Not all that different from the murder of King a little over a year ago.)
    http://www.blackvoices.com/boards/news-and-sports/bvcaucus/bv-caucus/-/28424/message/1

When Obama took office he inherited the mantle of war criminal from Bush who got it from Clinton, the ever so heroic mass murderer of half a million Iraqi children. Watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf83udJfbMs ONLY if you have a strong stomach – it’s horrific.

That’s why it’s unlikely that Obama will do anything meaningful to end this problem. The terrible inter communal strife in Iraq is just what the US government and military want because it divides Iraq while Texaco/Chevron and others establish hegemony over its petrochemical industries.

What Obama should do is order an immediate airlift to safety and asylum for everyone threatened with persecution, jail, torture and death and he should do the same for threatened GLBT folk in Jamaica, Uganda, Afghanistan, Poland and Nigeria. But he won’t, not in a millions years. Nor will he take even basic steps like ordering order Hillary Clinton to broadcast that US embassies and consulates everywhere in the world have an open arms policy towards granting asylum and protection for GLBT folks in danger of violence.

These easy humanitarian steps will never be taken. The US wants instability in the region. That’s why there are over a million dead in Iraq. That’s why the US finances zionist ethnic cleansing in Palestine and why the murder of civilians is increasing in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The dreadful truth is that dead GLBT folks are just ‘collateral damage to Obama and the Pentagon.

Uhm..wow….gee, invading an entire country, disbanding its armed forces, and executing or imprisoning the upper ranks of its policy makers wouldnt have ANY effect on how its citizens start behaving afterward..right?
