Bachmann: The Serve America Act will lead to ‘re-education camps for young people.’

bachmann.jpgLast week, Congress passed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which expands AmeriCorps and increases volunteer opportunities at home and abroad. Appearing on Minnesota’s KTLK this weekend, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) joined in the right-wing frenzy over the bill, claiming that it could lead to “re-education camps for young people“:

I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically-correct forums.

Listen here:

Bachmann’s over the top rhetoric isn’t new. During the presidential campaign, when then-Sen. Barack Obama was promoting a national service plan, Investor’s Business Daily and National Review’s Candace de Russy claimed that Obama was seeking to create “re-education camps.” (HT: Dump Bachmann)

In Michelle’s case it would not be called re-education but just education camp.

It’s not like the Jesus Camp she attended.

Mandatory service? At least they wouldn’t be wandering the streets, broke and out of work, thanks to republican economic policies.

  5. Ms_Joanne says:

Good lord, if anyone needs re-education it’s Bachmann.

There should be a test for people running for government. In this case, a test for mental deficiency. Honestly, some of what I have heard out of the mouths of elected officials of late is appallingly stupid.

And all of us get to suffer the ramifications of people like her.

I think Michele Bachmann missed the first round of education. Will she use her new one world currency to bribe her way out of Obama’s re-education camp? Or will she shoot her way out in a last ditch effort to save her gun and ammo?

I’d be more embarrassed is she was in my voting district, but Bachmann has turned into a holier than thou christofascist. She barely won last year, and would not have w/o National RNC funds.

The nice thing about Reps is they’re up every 2 years. I’ll do what I can to make sure she doesn’t return in 2011.

Now where is he getting that kind of idea? Faux “News”, Glenn Beck, Rush Limpballs, Michelle Bachmann, etc, etc, etc.

Isn’t this the same as screaming Fire in a theater? Isn’t there a law against such incitement?

It’s irresponsible comments like these by the likes of people like Ms. Bachmann, Mr. Beck, Mr. Hannity, Mr. O’Rielly, Mr. Liddy, Ms. Malkin, and others that inflame those who listen to them in their basements rubbing their guns and grenades. And when one of these idiots goes off and commits a crime everyone goes quiet as if they had no responibility at all. It’s funny how hip hop/ rap music, video games, rock music, and be blamed for crime and violence, but the word of a U.S. Representative or a radio host or commentator for a major cable network gets no blame.

Oh I get it they’re Rushpuppetcans.

The so-called mainstream media does not play back any of the vile shit said by right/white winged radio or tv after one of these acts are committed out of fear of the machine. Imagine if Keith Olbermann told listeners to aim for the heads of “jack-booted government thugs” because they wear vest, and by god someone actually did it. Suppose Rachel Maddow wrote a book listing who she thought were the 100 people ruining America and some idiot tried to follow that kist and went into a church and killed, the world would go mad.

But when the FOX crowd does it, crickets.

Re-education camps my ass, Jesus camp now that was something that needed to be looked into.

#31: Our young capitalists should not be exposed to radical concepts such as “Volunteerism”.

Lemme tell you a story. A couple of years ago I had to go for some physical therapy. One of the gals who did the PT did sports therapy at local grade/high schools (in one of the richest areas of Chicago’s north shore). She told me the story of a women who went ballistic that HER CHILD would NEVER be serving soup to THOSE PEOPLE. They wanted to live like that!

    I was disgusted beyond words.

She also told me the story of a 9 year old kid who took $1300 to school in his wallet. They knew this because he lost his wallet. The school found it.

Too much money. Too little sense.

  36. songoterre says:

Bachmann must realize that *if* her argument is valid, the arguments put forward by liberals that any government money allocated for faith-based social initiatives is a threat to the separation of church and state (due to the possibility/likelihood that preaching/conversion efforts would take place as the services were delivered to individuals.)

The liberal argument does have, as a significant aspect of its support, the constitutional force of the separation-of-church-and-state behind it. Michele’s seems to be supported by little more than partisanship and some lack of intelligence.

I’m a Minnesotan who lives just a few blocks outside Crazy Shelly’s District. I was appalled from the very first time I heard her speak and was certain that she would never be elected. Alas, the people of the 6th District are a combination of the wealthy and the unsophisticated. One could even say ignorant. Crazy Shelly herself identifies them as “the most pro-life district in the country”. But? They are not bad people.

Most of her base are “good Christians” and all that’s needed to secure their votes is to claim the mantle of a “good Christian”. And, she benefited from gobs of cash from the RNC (for vile attack ads) while the local press has utterly failed to report her batsh!t crazy rants.

I’m afraid that we can only hope she continues to rant and the local press will pick it up. I regularly let the local media know what I think. And, there’s always the chance she will visit a psych ward and they won’t let her leave.

BACHMANN: I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service.
    __________________________________________________________

And do you have any evidence for this other than your “belief”? I have a few reasons for thinking your “belief” is based on batsh!t insanity.

    1. Even those people who think it’s a great idea to require some sort of national service for America’s youth for a year or two (sort of like the Mormon church requiring missionary service of their young people), admit that putting all of our 18 to 20 year olds to work would be logistically impractical and financially unfeasible.

    2. Even the most likely requirement of service, reinstatement of the military draft, isn’t likely to happen anytime soon. It would be political suicide for anybody who tried. And if we can’t even reinstate the draft (a concept that has been accepted in the past), how in the world could we instituted any kind of required service that hasn’t been tried before?

    3. How in the world do you leap from “let’s increase volunteer opportunities” to “young people will be put into mandatory service”? This is like interpreting “we have brooms available for neighbors who would like to sweep their walkway” as “neighbors are hereby required to perform extensive landscaping of their property.” It doesn’t even make sense.

But making sense hasn’t ever been a priority with you, has it Michelle?

  91. KateWords says:

Which means she’ll soon be trying to introduce legislation to “prevent” this non-happening from happening, using her favorite “have you stopped beating your wife yet?” tactic to give her fantasies a sense of validity…

  92. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

This woman has gone from being mildly entertaining to downright dangerous. It’s people like her who encouraged the guy who killed three policemen with an assault weapon. If she was a Democrat and we had a Republican president, she would be in jail right now for sedition. Encouraging an armed revolution is sedition and I wonder why she is being allowed to do it. Homeland Security and the Secret Service need to have a serious talk with this wackadoodle.

  93. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Squeaky Wheels Says:
I’m from Minnesota and while yes, Bachman is embarrassin on one level, on another she’s more fun than a barrel full of bible-thumping monkeys.

You don’t find her calling for our populace to be “armed and dangerous” to be just a little scary?

I fear for our country. If the right keeps it up, we will soon be in another civil war in this country.

  94. Hoodathunktick says:

Pete, you might want to reconsider on the rodent.

  95. Ape-Man says:

The Bachmanns of the world are busy DE-educating everyone. Heven forbid they be RE-educated.

  96. Hoodathunktick says:

BHB, I agree, I fear for us as well. Not a civil war but there will be a lot more blood before there is peace. The unstable minority in the Quisling Quarter will make itself much more known before the means of quieting it is found.

Bachmann, Hannity, Beck and company will have things to answer for before it is done.

  97. pete says:

Hoodathunktick. Don’t get me wrong. There are rodents I would pick over Crazy Shelly and a VERY FEW I would not.

  98. Libellula saturata Annie says:

  100. Serg909 says:

wow she has to be some kind of crazy and ballsy to shoot off her mouth like that (pun intended)and then go face these Dems she just called traitors and or Commies i cant see how a woman like this could have even be elected to be the person that cleans up dead animals. She likes throwing the propaganda word around how about her fellow right wing chistians calling for respect for religion then calling the pope the anti-christ or associating islam with a western ultra right Govement system i.e. islamo fasism. Propaganda indeed but i guess we should belive her she would be an authority on it seeing as she uses it at every turn to oppose progress and stifle reasonable dissent.

Oh wait, Joe McCarthy. Never mind.

  108. MapleStreet says:

I can’t get over the irony that philosophy is sorely missing from the schools nowadays. A good course in philosophy would lead people to not only examine new ideas but, even more importantly, examine the foundations of both new ideas and their own internal presuppositions.

Of course, to Bachman, that would really be scary.

  109. MapleStreet says:

    Oh, and about re-education camps.

Can I draw an analogy with the civics demonstraitons that kids are forced to be a part of while in school ?

  110. Bluestocking says:

I believe that there is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concerns is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically-correct forums.

    ************************************************

Good grief…could Bachmann possibly be any more paranoid??

Funny…I don’t recall Bachmann saying even one word in protest against those mysterious internment camps which the Bush administration gave KBR a contract to build right here at home. It really would not have been that difficult at all for the Bush administration to put those facilities to a similar use, or perhaps one infinitely more sinister than what she seems to be insinuating — yet as far as I know, she never even went as far as questioning the need for this project, let alone objecting to it. So facilities which could potentially be used to incarcerate political protesters against their will are okay, but volunteer education camps to which people go by choice in order to provide service to their country are not? Uh, huh…riiiiiiiiiight. Gimme a freakin’ break, lady…

We can all declare that she is insane and make fun of her – and we all do – but seriously, this woman is dangerous.
She is a Congressional representative and whether she is calling for an armed and dangerous populace, or declaring Obama a secret fascist, or that he plans to indoctrinate our youth into a reorganizaiton camps, reminiscent of Hitler’s Youth camps, she is a danger to the general public. Her words have weight in some circles, and the actions they may take in response to her delusional fear mongering must be stopped. Her peers must speak to her; her constituents must speak out; and she must be forced to realize the terrible impact of her words.

    Faire

  116. pete says:

I agree, again, Marie. I email my Rep. every time Crazy Shelly rants and I urge everyone to do the same. I also send tips to local media outlets (I live in Mn but not the 6th District) who, regrettably, seem to blindly accept her explanations of being “misquoted” or “taken out of context”. Sigh…

  117. dbearton says:

Bachmann needs more then re-education. She needs to be placed in the lockup ward for mental illness.

  118. pete says:

I can’t help but wonder; is all the bat scat from the Reichwhiners a response to Obama’s warm reception abroad and high approval at home? I think the truth, that Obama is popular and capable, is driving them “around the bend”.

  119. labman57 says:

The GOP has nothing meaningful or substantial to offer the American public regarding economic or foreign policy, so instead they resort to the same juvenile name-calling that failed them during the 2008 election campaign. All they can do is point their finger at Obama, sneer, and smugly proclaim “Don’t trust him. He is not one of us. He is un-American. He is a socialist….or a communist…..or a fascist…..or a Muslim…or the son of Satan.”

And their right-wing base jumps up and down and gets their blood boiling.

And the other 85% of the American public shake their heads, give a heavy sigh, and go about their business trying to help Obama make the world a healthier, safer, more economically vibrant place to live.

Notice how she like many repugs uses projection and labels her OPPONENTS fascists when she and her Neo Con brethren are the closest thing to fascists since her hero Joe McCarthy and the Dulles brothers who actually helped finance the rise of the fascist we went to war with.

As for ever realizing the destructive impact of her words thats the intent of this manipulative facist witch.

  123. AlexLawyer says:

Now wait! Bachmann has a point! The government is already conducting camps to brainwash vulnerable young people and turn them into brutal killers. They’re called military boot camps.

  124. pete says:

Thank you, mike31. As a, sometimes, proud Minnesotan (though I don’t live in her District) I cringe every time I see/hear her name. Rest assured I do all I can to thwart her. And I would greatly appreciate the efforts of all good people to have the Congress censor her for her anti-American BS.

Heck! While you’re at it. These are the media outlets that I regularly beg to honestly report her bat scat. If you feel like taking a few minutes to send some emails? Lots of sane Minnesotans would appreciate the effort.

Pete, i’ve sent e-mails to tv stations and to Congress to censor that wack job………in fact I even donated $50 to some guy named Elwin Tinkleburger that was running against her and i’ll donate $100 to the next person that runs against that fascist wack job and I dont even live within 1000 miles of Minnesota thats how much I loathe that dispicable woman.

  127. pete says:

    Thanks, again, mike.

Unfortunately, that’s all that we sane people can really do. We just have to keep the pressure on and counteract the bat scat with logic and reason. On the bright side, it’s entirely possible that any reasonable candidate who doesn’t have the unfortunate name of Elwin Tincklenberg, or however the Hell it’s spelled, might get the job done.

It’s only a two year term and she only has one vote. Let’s all hope she doesn’t inspire any murderers before her crap catches up with her.

I’m a lefty who believes in the social safetey net, medical care as a right and I’ve been a Democrat since 1978, but if you think this is not the first step toward universal mandatory service, you haven’t been watching the Democratic party.

While Bachman clearly is batshit about re-education camps, the draft is going to become wildly popular, probably in Obama’s second term. I’ve had a lot of conversations with many of usually “liberal” friends, and you’ll be surprised how many of them think a mandatory two to four years is a good idea.

I just hope that there is someway to insure it’s their kids that get greased in the coming wars. (And for those of you who argue that Congress will start less wars with their kids in the service, that does not square with the historic record.)

Not wearing seatbelts was suposed to be only a secondary offence. Now it’s primary just about everywhere.

Awww.. now isn’t that special? “Lefty”? Really? Any particular reason that you needed to add your “lefty credentials”? Does that legitimize your “leftiness”? You may be a “lefty”, but I doubt that you are a progressive or liberal… or democrat for that matter.

but if you think this is not the first step toward universal mandatory service, you haven’t been watching the Democratic party. While Bachman clearly is batshit about re-education camps, the draft is going to become wildly popular, probably in Obama’s second term. I’ve had a lot of conversations with many of usually “liberal” friends, and you’ll be surprised how many of them think a mandatory two to four years is a good idea.

Oh, and HERE is the reason why. We have been watching (denigrate people in general terms often?), and if you read the posts here, NO ONE who is a progressive or liberal, or self-declared “lefty” is saying this at all — except for YOU. I sense some concern. Your “liberal” friends who agree with mandantory service… why the quotes? Are you saying that they are actually conservatives? And how do you imagine that the draft will become widely popular? And if it DOES become “widely popular”, then that would make you, at least, one of the minority in a democracy.

I just hope that there is someway to insure it’s their kids that get greased in the coming wars. (And for those of you who argue that Congress will start less wars with their kids in the service, that does not square with the historic record.)

Very moral of you. Hope you’re not a christian, because just that comment is enough for a bit of damnation. And “greased”? Why use a euphamism? Why not just say “killed”, like the thousands who have died — were killed — in these “wars” that Bush started? By your theory it should have been all republican children being killed over in Iraq and Afghanistan, but that is not the case. Did you make a case for that when those conflicts started? I’d bet not.

Not wearing seatbelts was suposed to be only a secondary offence. Now it’s primary just about everywhere.

Well, this just proves that you are not very bright. This comment is incorrect.

I’m picking up on a lot of concern here…. very concerned, you are….. and popping in so late to the conversation, and posting something that you probably assumed would not be responded to. In some ways, that is fair enough. I probably won’t return to this thread myself.

I read through the comments and the only argument most people seem to have is that she is crazy or needs medication or should be sent to a camp herself. No one seemed to argue that the fact congress was attempting to make it mandatory. Many of you talked about serving in Americorps. That is fine, you volunteered. The issue with the bill was that people would be forced to volunteer.

Volunteering in of itself is an act of charity. It is an overt declaration of assistance from one person to another. The Serve America Act was initially going to make everyone volunteer and only to Government approved service organizations. Forcing someone to service without due process or compensation is akin to slavery.
I am a conservative. My belief is the Government should NOT be in the charity business. We are the most generous nation on the planet (private donations). People will give to causes and volunteer for organizations they feel are worthy. The people, not government, should decide who to give their time and money to. The Government deciding who you should give your time and money to smacks of fascism.(From Wkipidia Fascism-advocate the creation of a single-party state, forbid and suppress criticism and opposition to the government, opposes class conflict and blames capitalist liberal democracies for creating class conflict, reject the individualism and self-interest of laissez-faire capitalism, fascist leaders have claimed to support a “Third Way” in economic policy this was to be achieved by a form of government control over business and labor)
