Far Right’s New Talking Point: Obama’s Remarks In Europe Prove He Hates America

Speaking in Strasbourg, France, last Friday, President Obama sought to turn the page on the American-Europe relationship. He admitted that in the past, America had “shown arrogance” and had “been dismissive, even derisive” of Europe. He also said that Europe’s rampant anti-Americanism was “insidious.” Neither attitude, he said, was “wise,” nor do they “represent the truth.”

Apparently, maturity and nuance from a U.S. President gets interpreted as anti-American hatred to the radical right. On Friday night, Fox News’ Sean Hannity said Obama’s speech was evidence that “he harbors deep resentment” of America. The right wing continued its hysteria over the weekend and today:

KARL ROVE: There are ways to make the point that he made without running down America.

SEAN HANNITY: I am tired of Obama pandering to what I consider to be the worst instincts of those who hate this country.

NICOLE WALLACE: I think at his core he does not seem to believe in American exceptionalism, the way more Republicans define it.

Watch a compilation:

Not surprisingly, Hannity tied Obama’s comments back to his favorite topic: Rev. Jeremiah Wright. “Where did he get these ideas?” Hannity asked on Fox & Friends this morning. “Could it be that he sat in Rev. Wright’s church for 20 years? Could it be that he hung out with Father Pfleger? Could it be that he was hanging out with his buddy Tony Rezko?”

For months, the far right has sought to peg Obama as some sort of anti-American “Manchurian candidate.” In October, Michael Goldfarb said that “Obama has a long track record of being around…anti-American rhetoric.” Rep. Steve King (R-IA) warned that an Obama presidency would turn America into a “totalitarian dictatorship,” while Tom Delay prided himself on being among the first to declare Obama a Marxist. Dispensing with nuance, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) proclaimed flatly last fall, “Barack Obama’s views are against America.”

No logical, feeling person can be proud of what has been done in the name of this country over the past decade. It’s hardly anti-American to want your country to do better and be the best it can be.

Kevin Drum had a great post on Mother Jones over the weekend wherein he pondered why, exactly, so many on the far-right are feeling besieged and panicky. Why is it they feel the need to lash out at, demonize and obstruct Obama.

“Who, exactly, is their enemy these days?” Kevin asked. “I’m not sure they know themselves. But maybe that makes it worse…. like a horror movie where you’re surrounded on all sides by something you can never quite make out, I guess it seems to them like there’s something horrible going on, but it’s something so insidious that they’re only allowed to catch occasional foggy glimpses of it.”

Steve Bennen at the Washington Monthly takes this thought another step, too.

“I think this also helps explain why truly batty conservatives like Bachmann and Glenn Beck fabricate dire threats that don’t exist in our reality. They’re struggling to deal with legitimate progressive policy ideas, so they’re stuck manufacturing make-believe policy ideas that suit their worldview. Obama wants to adopt a global currency! He wants young people in government-sponsored re-education camps! He wants to take medical decisions away from doctors and give them to bureaucrats! He’s going to impose a tax on every time we flip a light switch!

“These ideas are clearly delusional, but for those who need to see a political apocalypse, they apparently don’t have a choice. Debating real ideas on the merits is proving too difficult, so they’re creating their own reality and hoping their supporters play along.”

There must be an end to the American fantasy of American exceptionalism if the world is to continue without wars of an imperialist nature.

I love my country. I’d like it back from our corrupt gutless politicians, their big money sponsors, and the smattering of media lackeys.

I’d like an order of investigative journalism as well. Rove, Hannity, and Bolton are laughable in content.

  10. Zooey Lepidoptera says:

President Obama, and we to the left of center, loves this country enough to acknowledge it’s flaws and try to make this a better place for all of us.

  11. spearNmagicHelmet says:

Hannity, Rove, Bolton et al. are talking out against the President during a time of war. Why that’s…that’s…unpatriotic.

Why do the wingnuts hate America?

  13. dargumedo says:

Here is the difference between some on the right and those on the left that critique our country. Rove, Hannity, etc. see America as a six year-old tee-ball player, you applaud him no matter what. He hits the ball and runs to third instead of first will solicit a, “Good job!” The left views America as a team in the NFL. You always look to improve, always review what you did and improve on mistakes you identify—because the other team damn well is, and it’s a cut throat league.

Criticism makes our country stronger by identifying and removing the deficiencies, head in the sand does not.

  14. Doodlebug Shayne says:

  16. stefan says:

They are terrified of people who are respectful of others and can speak intelligently, and hold their own. Anyone who has those qualities clearly hates America. Look at George W Bush, who was inarticulate and insulting – he obviously loves America more, by the way he trashed the economy and our international standing.

See? Screw America in the ass and obviously you “love” it more than someone who tries to heal and protect America.

Typical conservative hypocracy: tough-love applies to individual Americans who need to be called-out and admit that they have problems (drugs, alcoholism, unemployed).

But try to state the America as a country is imperfect and you are no longer American.

Here I thought part of the Protestant/Christian value system INCLUDED admitting that you are IMPERFECT

  20. misscoleopteramolly says:

Is it just my imagination, or are the wingnuts sounding more and more like Trajan? You know — take a remark out of context, hype it as “evidence” of something dark and sinister, and scream your “theory” as loud as you can — hoping that nobody will insist you back it up with anything solid.

Obama speaks the truth about our past relationship with Europe (and the rest of the world, for that matter) — relationships that are in tatters because of the past eight years. And while Obama is mending fences, he’s considered anti-American, an “America hater”, a “Manchurian candidate”, totalitarian, Marxist, etc. etc.

Perhaps the right just doesn’t know what to do with a President who’s more than a rah-rah sock puppet.

The idea that anyone can sincerely believe in “American exceptionalism” the way Republicans do is just absurd. And “American exceptionalism” is the reason our standing in the world has plummeted so precipitously over the past decade.

Whenever anyone expresses the belief that they are exceptional and should be treated differently because of it, it’s bound to cause resentment and disgust among those whom you’re calling unexceptional.

Exceptionalism is the perception that a country, society, institution, movement, or time period is “” (ie. unusual or extraordinary) in some way, and thus does not conform to normal rules, general principles, or the like.

An excuse to not have to abide by the rules that everyone else is expected to abide by. Can anyone say “torture, renditions, pre-emptive war, incarceration without trial, oversight, transparency, rule of law, …” shall I go on? I can…..

Countries of all kinds, including the modern United States, Great Britain at the height of the British Empire, Imperial Japan, Iran, Venezuela, Israel, the USSR and Nazi Germany have claimed manifest exceptionality, as have many historic empires such as Ancient Rome and China, and a wide range of minor kingdoms and tribes in history. In each case a basis has been presented as to why the country is exceptional compared to all other countries, drawing upon circumstance, cultural background and mythos, and self-perceived national aims.

Nice company we are in there…. how many of these countries listed that claimed exceptionalism were countries that, in thoeir period of “exceptionalism” were actually considered to be positive and productive — “good” countries?

It is interesting to observe that the attitude of exceptionalism is also the PRIMARY factor in bigotry in any of its shades — the ‘darkie’, or woman, or what have you is always perceived as “lesser” “weaker” “Not as important or significant” etc..

It is the bigot who operates from and argues for exceptionalism. For a nation to make the same argument it is really the same priciple: “We are better than you, so we don’t have to follow those rules, but you do.”

Talk about “elitism” as a dysphemism.

After 8 years of hate, torture, lies and murder one might well question President Obama’s comment. We still hear hate and racism from our Media and Law Makers again all the Muslim people. Bush labled them Axis of Evil and Americans followed that. Hate was showed for even American people of color as we watched Black Americans beg for help as the Bush Administration turned a blind eye. We hear TV Host still attack President Obama with racism and hate remarks. So why on earth would the Middle East think the US has changed. The US Civil Rights Bill was passed as Blacks were still being murdered. Bush has spent 8 years drilling hate in the mines of the American people and McCain/Palin did their best to continue the mission. The GOP shows not respect for President Obama and the TV Journalist fake/real do their best to continue the Bush mission. We have to first deal with ourselves and clean our own house. I know President Obama is talking from his heart but the US has a long way to go before we can say we don’t hate. We saw thousands of Katrina victims dead because our country didn’t think they were worth living.

  44. hanshiro the antlion says:

Anything that hints of regulation and examination will be attacked by the corporate culture.

The Corporations do not want Obama to succeed since his presidency ushers in the possibility of oversight and actual regulation to the point of investigation and laws with teeth. The revamping of the bush-corrupted regulatory agencies, the discovery and investigation of increasing salmonella cases and continuous reports of malfeasance practices by corporations threaten the hold and gains they established during the bush years.

The best antidote to that is to pay integrity-free mouthpieces in the noise machine to cast doubt and try to distort and discredit those who would seek to shed light on what corporations have been up to these past 8-10 years. Such stellar behavior as Pfizer in Kano, Nigeria–testing their drug on unknowing children, just as bush’s FDA tried in their horrific “CHEERS” program.

This is the fear that is being disseminated, and why it’s being sown amongst the country’s populace. For no other reason but to make aggressive profits at the expense of human lives.

I mean these right wing nuts have spread so many lies in the name of their God. It’s shameful. I thought it was one God and I know the God I praise would never do what the right has done.

I’m glad the Pres. O won. Can you even imagine if McCain & Palin got into office? It would be the runner up to World War III. Seems like all these people want to do is go to war and take from third world countries, at the expense of one of our most cherished, the military.

The right want total control over America, one party, that’s it, then control what we read, view, eat, and even learn. And they are the first to cry freedom of speech, yeah right, their paranoid version.

It still lingers of course, but the remedy for British exceptionalism was perhaps the 1970’s when we had deflation, inflation, general strikes, shortages, and half of the 80’s (11% unemployment, more strikes, an increase in racism).
    (I speak from personal experience).

When your country is falling apart around you, whatever admirable qualities that had existed in your society or no bloody use and the sane tend to abandon the idea—they simply can’t afford to live on nostalgia and fantasy any longer.

  55. NOLIESPLEASE says:

Read this and tell me if we are not in the midst of Republican Fascism???

Dr. Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
    1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
    2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
    3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

    4. Supremacy of the Military – Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
    5. Rampant Sexism – The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
    6. Controlled Mass Media – Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
    7. Obsession with National Security – Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
    8. Religion and Government are Intertwined – Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed
to the government’s policies or actions.
    9. Corporate Power is Protected – The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
    10. Labor Power is Suppressed – Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
    11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts – Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
    12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment – Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
    13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption – Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
    14. Fraudulent Elections – Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

The subsequent backlash of unfiltered racism brought forth by the right has lessened that feeling.
It’s $hit like this that makes me wonder if we will ever be truly UNITED as a country.

I agree with you re: election in Nov.

The backlash was always there, now, it’s just lowered its veil.

We are united more than you think. It’s just a problem that good people have more dignity and tend to remain quiet in contrast to the fascists who run their mouths on the t.v. box.

  72. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Ok, this is past being annoying and entering into the realm of dangerous. It should pop up here soon, but Michele Bachman is now saying that Obama wants to put our kids in “re-education camps and brainwash them into liberal think”. After she said that the populace should be “armed and dangerous” and all the other right wingers saying things like “strap it on” or “we have to get rid of him”, and now calling him Anti-American… all this is doing is making the right wing nut jobs more full of fear and hate and more liable to commit crimes like killing three cops with an assault weapon.

I really do fear for our country if the right keeps this up.

Because, no offense, but it was only 60 years ago that minorities could not play professional sports.
    Was that right?
Hell, it was 40 years ago that “colored” people couldn’t even drink out of the same water fountain as “whites”.

They weren’t “alienated” by any of the President’s previous actions or words?

I wanted to see who this lady was.

Now I don’t feel so bad :-> She is as made up as the idea of American exceptionalism.

OTOH, if Ali was talking about the nut who worked for Sarah Palin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolle_Wallace), then I still don’t feel bad.

Appearing on Minnesota radio station KTLK-AM, the Republican congresswoman expressed her concern that White House was trying to put in place “re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward.” Furthering the Obama-as-autocrat theme, Bachmann said the youngsters would “then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums.”

Obama is a disappointment. Yes, he did win the election with his buddies from Acorn(voter frauid indictments in 12 states). Where’s the outrage? Where’s the outrage of passing on trillions of dollars of debt to generations to come? These are just two examples of non-partisan issues that every American should be outraged about.

As neither a radical right, or radical left American, I found the President’s remarks typical of a president who wanted to appear humble, although very studied humility, before worshiping, curious, European audience. When in fact his entire career has been self-promotion (I’m from Chicago)and a lot of arrogance thrown into the mix. You don’t “write” two autobiographies with a very thin resume without just a little arrogance. I believe the right has got this man’s character spot on this go-a-round. The left refuses to study it, because they are still punch-drunk in love with, uh, words…”…words, just words.” Those words not his words.

  135. prophetelijah says:

No person ever maintains everyone’s approval. On the other hand, we cannot oversimplify the problems facing the president. To say he is a “jacka” for addressing a critical issue in American-European diplomacy is just that, an oversimplification. I am a patriot. I have been in Europe and the trip I took made me love my country more because I had an opportunity to compare it with the rest of the world. Let’s make no mistake, an Englishman loves his country as much as we do; a German loves hers as much as we do–they are all patriots, as we are. Obama is humble, yes, because too often Americans and Europeans scream at each other and that hinders progress. To deny that we have been arrogant as a country and as a culture is not a mistake. Obama is not doing that. But he is not therefor saying that Europe is not arrogant as well–a look in a history book will tell you they have had a tendency towards snobbery. Obama is offering hand, folks, a hand to these people in an attempt to end this bickering between the two halves of western culture. As to some of the other complaints against Obama, he is not perfect, and there is much more that I wish he would do. But I am not going to make a snap judgment now, only three months into his presidency. To those disappointed with him, I say, grow up and get some patience. It takes time to get things done. If in four years he’s screwed up, then we judge him, then we vote him out of office. Until then, take a deep breath and wait to see how the game plays out.

The Kool-aid Preachers preaching to an ever shrinking choir.

I don’t see as ironic that these commments come the heels of the lastest approval rating for Obama at 66. And those that are informed of such ratings, understand that’s a high approval rating.

It seems the more hate that these Kool-aid Preachers preach, the higher Obama’s rating goes.

After watching him and observing the crooks he’s installing as his cabinet,Obama sure feels like the anti-Christ.Several people I know also tell me that they feel Obama is the anti-Christ and there’s a big chance that he is.I’m still waiting to see his birth certificate as are many thousands of people.
