D.C. City Council votes to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
On the same day that Vermont legalized same-sex marriage — and just five days after the Iowa Supreme Court did the same — the D.C. Council voted today “to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.” While domestic partnerships are currently legal in the Capital, the bill will allow D.C. couples to marry in one of four states that allow same-sex marriages and have that marriage recognized under city law. Council member David Catania (I) said the vote was a “march” towards legalizing same-sex marriage. The 12-0 vote “sets the stage for…a clash with Congress, which approves the city’s laws under Home Rule.” Asked if he would sign the bill, Mayor Fenty said he would review the legislation but added, “I support gay marriage.”

April 7th, 2009 at 3:44 pmI’m starting to wonder what “recognizing” a legally performed gay marriage in another state will really mean.
Washington DC has a lot of federal workers. Does this “recognition” mean that gay federal workers will get the same benefits for their spouses as straight workers? If not, I suppose they’ll still get things like hospital visitation, inheritance, etc. But if so, I would imagine that will result in a push to recognize the marriages of gay federal workers (for benefits purposes) wherever they may be.
