Right Wing Hysterical Over Obama’s ‘Not At War With Islam’ Remarks: ‘We Have Nothing To Apologize For’

President Obama’s outreach to the Muslim world has been a welcome development after eight years of President Bush’s “us vs. them” approach. “Let me say this as clearly as I can,” he told the Turkish parliament yesterday. “The United States is not and will never be at war with Islam.” He told Turkish students today, “You will find a partner and a supporter and a friend in the United States of America.” Middle Eastern leaders are embracing Obama’s outreach already.

But apparently, the conservative establishment finds such outreach objectionable. On Fox News yesterday, John Bolton, Bill Kristol, and Sean Hannity all derided Obama’s comments to the Turkish parliament. They argued that in fact, the Iraq war served as evidence of America’s concern for Muslims. CNN’s Lou Dobbs also decried Obama’s praise for the “great civilization of Iran”:

BOLTON:There are an enormous amount of things we’ve done to benefit Muslims in countries all over the world. We have nothing to apologize for.

KRISTOL: But could Barack Obama say something that would be mildly unpopular to an audience which he was speaking? No. Could he say that the war in Afghanistan or the war in Iraq are just and that we have fought for Muslims, incidentally under President Clinton we fought for Muslims in Bosnia and Kosovo?

HANNITY: It seemed to me…that this was an attempt to apologize for toppling Saddam Hussein and the war on terror.

DOBBS: In his efforts to charm our allies, President Obama noted that Islam helped shape the world for the better, including the United States. He even declared Iran to be a great civilization.

Charles Krauthammer said Obama’s parliament speech was “not original and not terribly important.” Kristol responded that Krauthammer was being “too nice.” Watch a compilation:

In his first trip abroad, Obama also extended a hand towards Europe, saying that America had “shown arrogance” and had “been dismissive, even derisive” towards Europeans in the past. Again, the right wing saw this as evidence of Obama’s anti-Americanism.

The outreach is desperately needed. Over “70 percent of Egyptians, Pakistanis, Indonesians and Moroccans believe the United States is trying to weaken and divide the Islamic world,” an April 2007 WorldPublicOpinion poll said. It seems that for the far right, however, the best outreach is always through bullets and bombs.

Update In a press conference alongside Obama in Iraq today, Iraqi PM Nouri al-Maliki remarked: "I appreciate very much the call for dialogue that President Obama mentioned, especially between East and West, between Islam and Christianity, and also work to solve the Palestinian issue that will help reduce violence in the area drastically. It will help in giving people their rights also produce peace that we’ve been looking forward for a few years."

But Obama didn’t demounce the wars. In fact he is pursuing more of them with gusto. Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman reported some time back that the claimed withdrawal of troops isn’t exactly what it is advertised to be. Some 50 to 100K US led combat forces will remain in Iraq until 12-31-2011, just being renamed “assistance advisory brigades”. Yesterday Glen Greenwald opined that Obama is now looking worse than Bush on the domestic spying issue.

  6. Danny Noonan says:

It’s not so much that the conservative establishment finds such outreach objectionable. It’s that they find it usable. The right wing doesn’t care about policy prescriptions insomuch as it cares about being the ones prescribing the policies.

  9. misscoleopteramolly says:

As usual, the wingnuts are proving the “nuts” part. Kristol suggests that Obama declare the Iraq war to be “just” and demonstrative of how we’ve “fought for Muslims”. Kind of hard to convince them that we’re fighting “for” them when about a hundred thousand of them have died since our invasion.

And then there’s Hannity — still valiantly trying to conflate Saddam Hussein and the war on terror by putting them in the same sentence every chance he gets.

Let the right get hysterical. Obama is saying things that should be said — and more people are listening to them than to the ravings from the insane right.

Most sane people would compare those within the Muslim faith who exploit and contort the message of Islam with our version here in America: The Christian Taliban. Both cults are a small number within a greater universe of folks who adhere to the teachings and try and follow those teachings throughout their lives. A small sub-set of fanatics are both the Muslim AND the American Taliban. They are of the same mindset, but also do not speak for the greater universe of spiritual followers. Quite a lot, actually. Art, music, culture, and literature, to start, plus outreach in print and broadcast media by clerics and religious scholars. Oh, and through civil society participation in cross-cultural dialogue and international events.

And there have been a great many Muslims who have used all of these methods to decry acts of violence and intolerance committed in their name, as have a great many peace-minded Christians and Jews. The sad fact is that these outreach efforts – particularly ones undertaken by Muslims, are ignored in Western media, hence the widespread perception that they don’t exist.

Conservative talking heads, ie. Limbaugh, Beck, Dobbs, Hannity, Kristol, O’Reilly, Krauthammer, etc. and many Republican/Conservative politicians, ie. Bolton, Bachmann, Cheney, McCain, Palin, Boehner, etc. are money and/or power hungry and are willing to suck up to the “end-timer” base to get their money and/or power, even if their positions reduce America’s chances to improve.

I think the current “bunch” in power in America, increases America’s, awa the whole world’s, chances for improvement.

Those money/power mongers are simply trying to sell us (Americans) another bill of goods. I hope the people that bought into the “monger” fact munipulations in the past, have learned that the “just say no” or the “us or them” mentality doesn’s help us improve.

Yes after we used them we turned our backs on them so they would be killed. When even our soldiers asked for help for their news friends the Bush Administration said no. Many run to other countries in fear of their lives. Some said their families were murdered for them helping the United States. American Muslims get stopped and harrassed for no reason but because their Muslim. He is a socialist….or a communist…..or a fascist…..or a Muslim…or the son of Satan.”

And their right-wing base jumps up and down and gets their blood boiling.

And the other 85% of the American public shake their heads, give a heavy sigh, and go about their business trying to help Obama make the world a healthier, safer, more economically vibrant place to live.

We’ve demonized an entire group of people in this nation, based soley on what a few radical members of their fringe did.

They’ve “demonized” themselves in not having the courage to stand up to what these fringe terrorists did. They’d rather complain on how mainstream America is treating them. It makes us feel guilty.

Nothing wrong with reaching out and starting a dialog. But the next question should be why are Muslims at war with everyone that is not a Muslim? I think the Muslims have some reaching out to do also and not just to America. Their intolerance of others needs to be examined.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Osama and the nutbag Muslims no more represent Islam than Ann Coulter and Micheal Savage represent America. Islam is NOT overall intolerant of others. Islam is NOT the problem. Nutbugs within the religion are twisting it like David Koresh and Jim Jones twisted Christianity. Muslims all over ARE reaching out. I have more than once put up links to more than fifty statements by mainstream Muslim organizations doint EXACTLY THAT.

    10hourday Says:

tombaker -I have read up on the subject and I read the international news every day. A day doesn’t go by when I don’t read of a Muslim killing of a non-believer -in the following conflicts: Sudan, Kashmir, Congo, Ivory Coast, New Caledonia, Sarajevo, Chechnya… then there is the Sunni-Shiite conflict where they are killing each other over an interpretation of their religion. They slaughtered a cartoonist because he published a stupid cartoon of their Mohammad -how intolerant is that?
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

You are a moron. Reading is only half of the answer UNDERSTANDING what you read would help. The Sudan is a north south civil war they have muslims FIGHTING the government which is the problem there. Chechnya is a long standing civil war with Russia and is NOT muslim in origin. Kashmir is an India Pakistan thing. You are an idiot who doesnt know what you are talking about. No one is denying there are extremist nutbags out there but that doesnt mean Islam is the problem. In the 40s the worlds most violent terrorists were Jews. They blew up the King David hotel, the Semiramis HOtel, the Cairo to Haifa railroad several times, the SS Patria, they assasinated Lord Moyne and Folke Burnadotte. No one blamed Judaism. When the IRA were the worst terrorists in the world blowing up marketplaces and stores and restaurants no one blamed Catholocism. When the Red Brigade and Eta were killing people wholesale in the 70s no one blamed secularism. NOW that the political terrorism is done by Muslims bigots like YOU want to blame Islam. Your simplemindedness is sad. It is also part of the problem.

Maybe you are stupid and brainwashed and just believe what you are TOLD to believe. No one is saying there arent nutbags out there or that they arent a problem. I could post Savage saying he is tired of hearing there are a billion Muslims in the world and we need to kill one hundred million of them or Coulter saying we should drop daisy cutters at random through the middle east. I remember Jim Jones getting almost a thousand people to commit suicide. What does that prove? NOTHING except to bigoted morons like YOU that want to take some examples and paint the entire religion with it. You are stupid. You are a propaganda parrot. You are part of the problem. You arent telling us anything we dont already know we ALSO know that doesnt represent ONE BILLION MUSLIMS YoU MORON. 90. batbird says:

kassandrasduplexcommented that even though Obama said it was time to leave Iraq to the Iraqis we would still have 50k to 100k troops in Iraq until 2011. That is the date that the Iraqis set in the SOFA that all troops will leave.

No one is speculating what will happen after that date.
I think that if the majority of the troops are out by the end of 2010 as per Obama’s plan, everyone will be good with leaving the 50k or so troops in place for contingencies.
Actually it would be a waste of time to try to stir up opposition to this plan. Everyone is in agreement –
Maliki, Obama, and even Bush. And I think the right and left are in a wait and see mode.

  91. Mark701 says:

What I want to know is how the likes of Hannity, Bolton, Kristol and Dobbs ever were allowed on the air. Are these people and the idiots they speak for really so twisted and arrogant that they cannot understand what Obama is trying to do?

I have a theory. With the exception of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the United States has never had an foriegn enemy army on its soil. We nevered suffered the bombings like England did in WW II or a land invasion like Russia did. We are blessed by having oceans to the east and west and friends to the north and south. This kind of geographic and geopolitical safety has lead to the birth of an arrogant, egotistical out of touch group of people who at their core believe NOTHING can touch them (personally). If Hannity, Bolton, Kristol, Dobbs et al had family members and/or killed and mained in wars that swept across our nation you can bet your ass they would be singing a different tune. In other words the core of their idocity is that nothing has ever hurt them personally, therefore, nothing ever will. It’s ironic that thousands have died in foreign wars to prevent idiots like them from getting into positions of authority.

  92. maxamillion says:

Can someone please explain to me why President Obama “broke bread” with these right-wing crack-pots? SUre I understand that they would be critical of him but WTF dude??

  93. Chicano2nd says:

These idiots don’t know the difference between Islam and Muslim.

  94. kenlee says:

I don’t care about the difference between Muslim and Islam. I had a sort of friend in college who was a refugee from Iran, but he called himself a Persian. Lord help any poor slob who forgot and called him Iranian though that was indeed where he came from. He was a major league jerk. If you want to play those stupid word games it only shows how lame your brain really is.

The muslims keep saying ‘you don’t understand.’ No, I don’t. I don’t understand diving a plane full of innocent people into a building full of innocent people in the name of God. I don’t understand a people who explode bombs in market places full of women shopping for supper or who are so proud of beheading helpless hostages that they make home movies of it. I don’t understand. Thank God. Thank God.

But let’s leave the murder of non-muslims and terror attacks aside. They way you guys treat your own is enough to make Hitler grow pale. You let fundamentalist pricks roam the streets with sticks and the right to beat anyone they disagree with, especially the women. You kill each other proudly over slight differences in interpretations of scripture. You brainwash your own children in blowing themselves up. Amnesty International tells us how you treat defendants and prisoners in your prisons, especially the women. You still behead and stone and mutilate people in the name of your God. You oppress anyone with differing opinions and your armies are infamous for the rape, torture and murder of civilians whenever they get a chance.

It seems that Saddam’s torture chambers are a normal feature of arab jurisprudence.

The arguments in other comments that since the Christians did this, it justifies this is schoolground logic and insulting to grown men. I certainly agree the way the Middle East has been treated by the West for so many years is a disgrance, but it doesn’t justify anything. Hundreds of years ago when Europeans basically lived in holes in the ground the Muslim world was the bright light of civilization, wisdom and humanity for the world. This makes it even more disgraceful the way modern Muslims have turned off the light and climbed proudly into their own holes.

Of course there is a counter arguement that people like me are speaking from a bias encouraged by a manipulated media and this is probably true to some extent. I understand there are moderate, intellectual and kind Muslims, but they had better get off of their fat asses and start making noise. We are supposed to understand and forgive, but have no grounds to believe that tolerance and undertanding have anything to due with Muslim culture. We evil westerners have never sworn to wipe muslims off the face of the earth they way they have pedged to do Christians and Jews, and especially not in the name of our God. The muslims need to quit waiting to be understood and stand on their own two feet and take responsibility for themselves.

In college I married into the immigrant community and, by taking an interest, was lucky to meet people from many countries and I know any group has its own example of good men and pricks, but I have to also say, from my own personal experience, the arabs seem to produce a bumper crop of pricks, arrogant, childish and intensely racist men who take pride in beating their wives and hating Jews. They made me want to spit.

I believe that the war in Iraq is a crime. I believe that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld should be tried for crimes against humanity in the world court and tried for treason by our own congress. I am a Vietnam era vet and know that there are plenty of war criminals running free in America collecting their veterans’ benefits when they should be in prison. I know that the West has consistently and brutally sinned against againt the arab world for centuries, but this does not justify any bombing or raids.

I would like to be there when you show up before God and He learns of all the shit you’ve done in His name. There will probably be a special hole in hell for you guys, the one into which Christians and Jews piss.
