This morning on MSNBC, Joe Scarborough ranted about President Obama’s economic plans (even though 56 percent of Americans approve). His latest talking point: that Obama “has never received a paycheck” in his entire life:
SCARBOROUGH: Think about this: We have a president who has never received a paycheck. … This guy — think about it — he’s running Detroit, he’s running Wall Street, he’s gonna run other sectors of our economy. Andrew, he’s never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life. Not one check. … Think about the radicalism of that!
Watch it:
In fact, much like Scarborough himself, Obama has spent most of his career in legal and political work. Still, a significant portion of Obama’s career was indeed in the private sector, where he presumably earned many paychecks:
– Business International Corp.: In 1984, Obama wrote for the publisher’s weekly newsletter, Business International Money Report, covering currency issues and monetary policy.
– Sidley Austin: Obama was a summer associate at the private law firm in 1989, where he was supervised by his future wife, Michelle.
– Hopkins & Sutter: Obama was a summer associate for the Chicago law firm in 1990.
– Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Gallard: Obama was hired by the private law firm in 1993, working on voting rights and civil rights but also real estate transactions and incorporation.
Obama had all this private-sector experience before earning millions writing two best-selling books — books that were published by a for-profit, private-sector publishing company that paid him royalties directly related to his products’ performance.
The larger point, of course, is that the question of private sector experience is irrelevant when it comes to judging public servants. Indeed, Americans continue to reap the disasters sown by an oilman who owned a major league baseball franchise and boasted a Harvard MBA.
LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES LIES.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pmHas Scarborough ever received a check? THAT is the REAL question.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:04 pmYeah Joe because having an “MBA President” worked out SO well for America. Hey Joe, anyone asked you about Lori Klausutis lately? Whatever happened with that, Joe?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:07 pmLike there is some great and magical mystery knowledge to be gained Joe?
Joe sounds like yet another sycophantic brown-nose, who thinks that Boards of Directors are “like unto wizards, beyond our mortal comprehension”.
Can we stop idolizing dickheads in suits yet??
April 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pmTPM is calling such stuff “journalistic malpractice”. I would think, with Obama’s popularity steadily at high levels, the news would want to try to hitch their wagons to his star, to shine in its reflected light, rather than try to become overground Rush Limbaughs and right wing talk radio for the mainstream… An odd choice they are making, and I think it shows how impotent they not only feel but are.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:08 pmHas Scarborough ever deserved a check? THAT is the REAL question.
I fixed it for you, Uncle Ho
April 7th, 2009 at 12:09 pmHey SCARBOROUGH! Everytime you move your lips we know that you’re lying. For 8 long Bush jr. years, I don’t remember you making the statement that jr. never recieved a brain…at least that story would have given you some creditability, based upon his decision making.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pmUncle Ho Says:

You mean, has Scarborough ever EARNED a check?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pmJoe needs to go work at Fake News Network! He would fit right in at Fake News – mostly talk with no facts to back up their ’stories’.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pmJoe the Liar, Joe the Scumbag, Joe the Sh!thead, Joe the Dishonest…
…just another reason not to watch Corporate Neocon News.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:15 pmI still don’t understand why Scarborough is still at MSNBC. When will MSNBC’s morning program match it’s evening programming?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pmStop! How will Joe’s lazy-black-man-on-welfare meme ever gain traction with basic, easily provable facts such as this?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pmJoe Says:
We Have A President Who Has Never Received A Paycheck.
Whatever.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:18 pmWe also have an ex politician from Florida who had a dead girl in his office.
What’s that about?
He also worked for Baskin Robbins as a teenager in Hawaii, where he was born.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:18 pmLies aside, I just love it how these guys keep trying to invent “critical” issues. Now the issue du jour is the number of paychecks received from the private sector.
I couldn’t help noticing that this very important talking point (snark) didn’t surface until well after the election. Otherwise it would have brought up some uncomfortable comparisons to McCain — a guy who’s been on the government payroll most of his life.
Is it possible for a president to preside over economic recovery if he’s never owned his own business? Or didn’t spend his life working in the private sector? Of course it is. Just the same as it’s possible for a president who never fought in combat to be Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces.
But that won’t stop the talking heads. They will continue in their relentless search to find something — anything — President Obama is (or is not), and claim this makes him unfit to lead the nation.
It’s really pathetic how deep they’ve had to dig to find crumbs.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:19 pmMy first thought was Obama as a Constitutional Law professor.
I’m fairly certain that wasn’t a volunteer position.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:20 pmMaybe Joes contract is almost up at MSNBC. Hes getting ready for his move to Fox lies.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:20 pmAnd W. received paychecks for jobs at companies that failed. So what’s Scar’s point? That experience at failing in the private sector means you’ll be a failure at president? We know that! But there were other presidents who did not do much in the business world, either, and yet were decent presidents, such as Johnson and arguably (except for Monica), Clinton. Governing is a function of leadership, and the Wall Street and Detroit CEOs have been miserable at leading. Obama so far is doing just fine without an MBA.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:20 pmI find Joe Scarborough dumber than a bag of rocks. That is why I cannot watch his show when he is on there. I watch sometimes when he is off.

_____________________________________________________________
Simple. Joe and his ilk preach to those who don’t bother with fact checking. They just mindlessly absorb the sound coming out of whatever voice is the loudest, as long as it reinforces their prejudices.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:21 pmIt is a strawman anyway. Barack Obama is not “running” these companies. They are under temporary receivership until they pay back the bailout emergencies loans they have received from the U.S. govt.
This is not difficult to understand. Either Morning Joe is very ignorant in regards to these basic govt and economic issues or he is deliberately being obtuse. Neither of which is a good situation for our cable news mess.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:21 pmUncle Ho Says:
Has Scarborough ever received a check?
– - There certainly wasn’t a lot of checking done on the dead intern in Joe’s Congressional office.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:24 pmActually, Smokin Joe, Limpballs, BillO, Shammity, Darth Coulter are participating in a new reality show – Who’s the Craziest Pundit?
Each day, participants are judged on: How much press coverage they obtain, Most ludicrous utterings – print, online, radio, TV divisions. Participants can earn extra points for inciting riots, massacres, stock market failures, political/military incidents abroad…
The winner will be selected by a panel of righteous men – Daddy Dobson, not Joe not the Plumber and Todd Palin (baby needs new shoez!). Tune in 24/7 and watch the fun!
April 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pmLet me guess, ‘Meeka’ and the other right wing dopes sitting around the table were shaking their heads in agreement.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pmhe’s never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life.
– - Uh huh. And George Bush never fought in a war yet he was in charge of two of them.
Ok, wait, maybe that’s a bad example…
April 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pmAs a practicing bohemian I consider such a charge nothing less than a glowing indication of Obama’s intelligence !
April 7th, 2009 at 12:26 pmWork for peace , you already own enough appliances !
Scarborough seems to have bought into the right-wing meme that Obama went from being a “community organizer” to be president, with no more relevant experience in between.
The sad thing, Scarborough is one of the more reasonable wingnut talking heads out there. This is what passes for “reasonable” among wingnuts.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:26 pmThese Reich Wing wacko`s still can`t get past Novembers loses and are making themselves less and less relevant and are putting their ideologies and dogma more and more in the category of marginalization along with Faux News and their luminaries.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pmWhat I find amazing is that apparently no one sitting around the table challenged him on this.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pmIf Bush hadn’t been so fiscally irresponsible, receiving a check as a Senator could have been considered to have come from a “profit-making” entity.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pmIf Joe keeps this irresponsible blather going, somebody should do something about HIS paycheck. He GETS PAID for this?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pmRepublican TV talking heads lying — what a surprise.
But geez, what an idiotic thing to say. What a jerk he is.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pmJoe talks so Mika can’t. And I appreciate that. ;)
April 7th, 2009 at 12:28 pmWhy is Joe Scarborough still receiving a paycheck from MSNBC? Don’t the MSNBC executives ever watch Morning Joe?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:30 pmOne Thousand Billion Says:
Joe talks so Mika can’t. And I appreciate that. ;)
– - Snork. I wonder if Mika’s dad watches the show with a permanent facepalm.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:31 pmWhy do you find that amazing? Republican lies are nearly always readily accepted by members of the mainstream news media. That is why they continue to lie about every subject under the Sun, including the Sun itself.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:33 pmhe’s never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life
– - Those CEOs and Wall St. cretins aren’t exactly operating in the black, either.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:33 pmAt least MSNBC put the ED show on last night; that will offset ‘Ly’n Joe’ somewhat.
MSNBC should rid itself of it’s schizophrenic tendencies, though. Wingnuts in the morning & Progressive hosts in the evening is bizarre, imho.
But, we got Ed!
April 7th, 2009 at 12:34 pm“Scarborough Lies…”
No news there.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:36 pmWhat an a$$clown. I like the MSNBC evening lineup but this morning guy has GOT to go!
April 7th, 2009 at 12:36 pmPlease be mindful that Joe Scarborough is not a very credible person, when it comes to his facts….Mika’s dad can attest to that. Scarborough is more like a windsock….blowing in the direction of the wind, not against it~given the fact that GOPer “lap-dog” Sen. John Cornyn was the guest…and this was no doubt done for his benefit, because Cornyn it is well documented, is not a big fan of Pres. Obama or the Democrats. it is really quite disgusting the lengths these Right-wingnuts will stoop in trying to bring this very popular President down. And they do it through blatant hypocrisy and mindless rhetoric. This leads to another response….what has Scarborough ever accomplished….has he ever recieved a “paycheck from a profit-making business in the private sector?” He has spent half his adult life as a congressman from FL, and was never a senior member of the U.S. House, he is a lawyer only by virtue of a law degreee…and now he is on cable tv….and not even in prime time!!! Nice resume for a mindless blowhard!!

Scarborough is a liar, a shill and a dooshbag.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:43 pmJoe, Obama had direct deposit rather than paper paychecks. Have you got a problem with that?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:45 pmThink about the radicalism of that!
~Scarborough
I can never stop wondering if reichwingers even understand the terms they use. What in the world does “radicalism” even mean in this context?
By those standards, several people in the previous administration, as well as in Congress, were/are die-hard “radicals” who have never received a paycheck from a for-profit business in their lives.
(No, trollies, positions in think-tanks and short stints as overpaid executives or directive board members don’t count, stop fooling yourselves)
April 7th, 2009 at 12:48 pmWhat does the private sector even mean anymore? Everyone knows htat Bush’s work experience consisted entirely of trading on the family name. But what about Cheney and his tenure at Halliburton? The oil drilling and servicing business amounts to trading on opportunities and concessions granted by or secured by governments. He was a good CEO because he could leverage his Rolodex (unlike Bush’s Rolodex, it was one that he acquired without relying entirely on the family) but that is not the same as being a self-made man.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:51 pmSince when was receiving a paycheck an absolute indication of right thinking?
Aren’t there more indicators than that?
April 7th, 2009 at 12:53 pmI am willing to listen to conservatives talk IF they can do so without lying to make their points. I am still waiting for that to happen.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:53 pmYou know, I’m just now starting to get this nagging feeling that, quite often, Jow Scaryboy doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
That would explain the time I saw him walking out of a public restroom wiping his elbow…
April 7th, 2009 at 12:56 pmThis is what Obama’s ‘critics’ are reduced to–quibbling over how he receives his earnings.
Too bad they weren’t so choosy with those in prev. admins.
April 7th, 2009 at 12:57 pmNot to mention the most recent Republican nominee for the office Obama now holds.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:03 pmWhat has that got to do with anything? Does he think Obama lived in a vacuum?
April 7th, 2009 at 1:03 pmDoes not Obama have in his resume: a successful lawyer, professor and author, and state senator? But that is beside the point.
Scarborough is really scraping the barrel here in a futile search for claims against Obama — he better not scrape too much, though, because his own slimey past may be at the bottom.
Time for MSNBC to get rid of Joe Scarborough. Send that jackass packing! Plenty of room for his giant head on the Fox Insurgency Channel.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:05 pmPerhaps we ought to take a page from Adalai Stevenson and offer a deal: if they stop telling lies about us, we’ll stop telling the truth about them.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pmhenryde Says:
But what about Cheney and his tenure at Halliburton?
Cheney was exactly the person I had in mind when I wrote my comment.
Cheney’s tenure was a once-time-only, 6-year influence peddling gig -which is why I believe his “experience” in a for-profit company doesn’t count.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:07 pmI’m a big fan of MSNBC shows, especially Hardball, Countdown and Rachel Maddow. Getting up at three or four each morning there’s not much on and Morning Joe is entertaining on occasion. Joe is a legend in his own mind and needs to change to decaf, he’s losing it. Maybe Fox Noise is looking for a new host after Bill O the Clown gets kicked off the air? I know that will never happen. Dick Cheney would send his Blackwater “hit squad” after Fox exec’s, or Karl Rove could complain and scare the crap out of Fox. I hate to say this but Osama doesn’t quite scare me as much as the right wing nuts, they are like Killer Bees. We needs ome professional exterminators.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:09 pmralph the wonder locust Says:
Not to mention the most recent Republican nominee for the office Obama now holds.
Exactly. Plus, this so-called experience in the private sector is largely irrelevant.
If reichwingers don’t like the fact that Pres Obama is running the economy -which happens to be public (gasp!) policy- then their good-for-nothing-fat-cats-turned-rightwing-role-models shouldn’t be asking for money out of the public treasury to save the companies they managed to run into the ground.
So much for the private sector “experience”. Talk about an over rated skill.
Scarborough is an idiot. Not that there was any doubt left.

I agree. Mika’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but the day’s she’s got the show alone or Joe is somewhere else, it seems to be a bit more interesting. Joe’s arrogant tone makes it hard to bear certain days…
April 7th, 2009 at 1:14 pmIndeed, Americans continue to reap the disasters sown by an oilman who owned a major league baseball franchise and boasted a Harvard MBA.
1. He failed at every oil business he attempted.
2. He “invested” $600,000 of money borrowed on his name alone for a 2% stake in the Rangers and received $15 million, which was much greater than the 2% ownership share he bought and the bulk of his personal fortune at the time.
3. Once one is admitted to graduate school one “graduates” unless one quits, regardless of one’s performance.
4. As a dénouement to his terms in office he gave a $700 BILLION tax payer funded gift to his wealthy, powerful and well connected Wall Street cronies.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:18 pmIt’s not just a lie, it’s part of an assault on anything dedicated to the public good as illegitimate. PBS doesn’t meet Joe’s standard, nor does working for a public school or state college.
These guys really do worship Mammon.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:22 pm.
Joe Scarborough and facts go together like oil and water.

This is their overall strategy. Try to gin up distrust among the people over nonsense. Obama can’t be trusted as president of the whole country, because he was born on a island!
April 7th, 2009 at 1:32 pmLori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough now that should be what Morning Joe should be worried about. When AG Eric Holder does his investigation and fines Morning Joe was up to his neck in this murder, Joe will be looking for help from President Obama. Someone should have told Joe his pass would catch up with him and you can’t always pay your way out of murder.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:34 pmLet’s get Agent Moulder to look for Obama’s pay stubs as well as his birth certificate.
“He’s not one of us, right, Joe?”
April 7th, 2009 at 1:35 pmjoe “hogwash liar” does nothing but lies, hating on president obama, and what an airhead!.every mourning, he speaks nothing but misconceptions on our president’s leadership skills and mind thinking.he hates that barack obama is our president and can’t stand the fact that we as americans voted for change and being realistic for the people. he won’t go on fox noise meaning too many buttholes are just like him.when i watch mouring joe, mika takes orders from him and doesn’t say a word.this is so unbelieveable to look at two old dorks who doesn’t have a clue what is going on.i’m glad that thinkprogress.org put the info regarding president obama’s work background and make joe”scary” scarborough look like a fool sitting on a toilet taking a huge crap while wearing a dunce cap on his head!.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:36 pmThink about this. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney lied about WMDs in Iraq. 6,000 American Marines are in the grave because of them.
Joe Scarborough actually defended Bush’s lies while our troops were dying and are still dying in Iraq.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:38 pmThere is no point to trying to figure that out – they don’t even try to make sense. The propaganda machine receieves a list of words to work into the dialogue, no matter how little sense it makes, so they sprinkle them around like cluster bombs.
This is how we get “terrorist fist jab” and other such gems.
April 7th, 2009 at 1:43 pmAbraham Lincoln worked as a lawyer prior to entering politics. Sound familiar?
April 7th, 2009 at 2:04 pm“…he’s never received a check from a profit-making business in his entire life…”
I find it interesting that Scarborough thinks that the only “paychecks” that count are paychecks from a profit-making business.
April 7th, 2009 at 2:06 pmIsn’t it John McCain who has never taken a private sector paycheck? Not counting from his wife, of course.

April 7th, 2009 at 2:16 pmScarbourough has never had an original thought.
April 7th, 2009 at 2:24 pmThis is one of those matrioshka dolls of bad statements. It’s awful in so many ways, it’s breathtaking.
1) It’s factually untrue.
2) Joe baits and switches. He says something outrageous and obviously false to anybody, and then backpedals with a modifier, for which, see #1.
3) Why is Barack Obama’s tenure as a law professor at one of the premiere law schools in the country such a blank spot? To the Right,he jumped right from community organizer to Springfield. Nor is it brought ip by the left often enough, IMHO.
4) What is the difference between working for a for-profit company and working for a private University? Both have budgets, both have to maximize resources, both charge for their services, both have to woo customers. The fact that a university ultimately reinvests its income in aid, buildings, and its endowment doesn’t make any difference to the people working the factory floor.
5) So getting a paycheck from a company qualifies you to run it? Where’s the logic in that? there are, I dare say, a fair number of people who have received a paycheck from General Motors who are unqualified to run the company–like, oh, the guy who paints the undercarriage, or the guy who designs the web ads.
6) Does Obama look like he’s doing it all himself? Hasn’t he been conspicuously hiring scads of people regarded as experts in their field? Does he resemble even faintly Tony Stark?
It’s really mind-boggling.
April 7th, 2009 at 2:29 pmto 5th Estate, what a cretin you are like the one below.

Joe Scarborough is the one blemish on the otherwise brilliant MSNBC. I think he learned to smirk from George W. He learned sarcasm from Cheney. And Newt seems to have been Joe’s mentor for convienent memory.
April 7th, 2009 at 3:43 pmAnd Mika is not much better.
April 7th, 2009 at 3:44 pmThe right wing blogosphere will now go into convulsions.
Just when they were busy painting Obama as in league with Satan to resurrect Hitler, morning Joe comes along and points out that the guy “never received a paycheck”. Obviously, he has lived his entire life off the charity of others, doing deeds regarded as sufficiently good to for people to want to make him president of the United States. He did this, all the while never accepting any money for anything he’s ever done. What can anyone conclude from this other than Obama really must be a savior like Jesus, who worked for the poor without any material benefit to himself.
Shocking. Simply shocking to have this validated. Glenn Beck’s head will now further implode, if that is even possible and Rush is no doubt rant off another 5 pounds of fat over this.
Thanks Joe. God must be smiling on you today.
PS: Is anyone going to ask Joe the obvious follow-up question? How did he manage to do it? Clearly, it must be divine intervention.

April 7th, 2009 at 6:34 pmIt’s as if the right-wingers have gone through the old blogs, 2000-2007 newspaper articles considered “lefty’ and recycled the same words the “lefty’s” used to describe Bush replacing his name with Obama. Painfully unoriginal, painfully illiberal.
It looks like the right wing is attempting child’s play, as in “rubber-glue”, or perhaps “crazy-making-tag-you’re-it”, as if they need some kind of defense to keep their persona from melting off their faces, hands and minds when lying out loud.

One thing I can say about Joe’s show is all one needs to do is tape or TIVO it once, and then put it on every morning at the same time. It is always the same converation, and the ame lies, smears and right wing innuendo spewed out by Joe. He reminds me of the guy in “Best In Show” who played that clueless announcer.
