Burr drops his still-unexplained opposition to Duckworth nomination.

Last week, Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) announced that he was delaying the “nomination of Tammy Duckworth, an injured Iraq war helicopter pilot, to be an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs.” Burr’s office claimed that the senator was simply “doing some due diligence…to ensure veterans have the best representation,” but would not disclose what that “due diligence” was. Now, however, Burr is ready to let Duckworth’s nomination go forward. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported last night:

MADDOW: Today, the senator’s office relented. Still not clear on what the “due diligence” was on a decorated helicopter pilot, double amputee, experienced veterans advocate, supported by all the veterans service organizations, and nationally known for her work. But it is done. At last.

Maddow noted, however, that this does not seem to signal “smoother sailing for the rest of the high-level nominations that are still stuck in the senate.” Watch it:

Contacted by ThinkProgress, Burr’s press secretary, David Ward, said that the senator was satisfied with Duckworth’s responses to a number of last-minute questions. Ward added that the senator is “looking forward to moving forward with [Duckworth's] nomination.”

The Grand Old Party of NOpe.

Ms Duckworth is beyond qualified for this position.

    Mr. Burr, not so much.

    The Republic Party didn’t just get their hand in the cookie jar;

they took the whole damn bakery!

  2. christopher wiwi says:

As a member of the party of NO he was following party edict because he hasn`t an ounce of courage caompared what Ms. Duckworth and our other veterans and those who lost their lives in battle have to tell his RE-PUKE buddies to go to HELL.

  3. fire _ant_chavis says:

I guess Burr had a moment of clarity and decided he’d better do the right thing! It must be hard being a part of the the Grand Old Party of No Nothing, Nonsense Politicking!

Well, it is mighty nice of Senator Burr to allow this decorated, severely injured, intelligent, X-helicopter pilot to continue to serve the country she loves. Just mighty fine!

  8. Marie says:

How convenient – now that he has waited until the two week recess – so his unnecessary stalling tactic gained an additional two weeks delay.

  9. Marie says:

    Gen.Ripper,
If you look at her resume` she has much more in qualifications than being a pilot in Iraq. Burr was being obstructionist for no reason other than party politics.

  10. unbelievable says:

I guess the Fedealists, I mean Whigs, or rather, the Republicans pulled tehir heads out of tehir hinneys long enough to understand that voting against a wounded war hero probably wasn’t a good idea…

  11. deebaser says:

No offense to Ms. Duckworth, but the fact that anyone would give enough of a crap who was appointed “assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs” just shows the out and out obstructionism of the red team of late.

Well the President of the United States nominated her. That is the ONLY actual qualification for the position.

    – - Burr got confused, imagined his first name was Raymond, and figured Duckworth and her prosthetic legs were trying to horn in on his Ironsides persona.

  15. Gen. Jack "P" Ripper says:

    Marie,

I’m sure that’s true. If you didn’t pick up what I was laying down, the whole “getting shot down in not a qualification” criticism was used against McCain by Obama’s crew during election season.

Translation: Burr realized he’d picked the wrong target to wage his portion of the GOP war against President Obama. He needed to find somebody to block that would inspire others to get behind his opposition. Tammy Duckworth isn’t a person who would inspire a whole lot of opposition against her.

All we’re seeing now is Burr trying to backpedal as quietly and inconspicuously as he can.

BTW — Burr is up for re-election in 2010. If this is how he gets into the news, it’s going to be an uphill battle for him.

Funny, it didn’t seem to inhibit McCain, in fact, it’s all the Reichtwing bragged about for months.

Got stupid, or just “head-up-the-ass” syndrome, which makes it difficult to recall simple facts?

  18. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

President Obama seems on the surface to be enjoying many of the “Presidential powers” that his predecessor relished in. May I suggest one of Bush’s favorite tools to President Obama, one that is legal and not un-Constitutional and quite effective…RECESS APPOINTMENTS! Is there an Easter recess coming up?

Tammy Duckworth has done more than getting “shot down”. She was active in helping Illinois veterans. BTW, she is only going for assistant to the Director. I believe the Republicans touted the war record of one John McCain as a qualification for president.

    ____________________________________________________________

Nor is getting shot down or wounded in battle anywhere. That, all by itself, didn’t qualify John F. Kennedy, George H.W. Bush, John McCain, Max Cleland, Bob Dole, or Bob Kerrey for their positions in government.

Fortunately, Tammy Duckworth, like many of the gentlemen mentioned above, has plenty of other qualifications.

Is this just a troll turd you dropped in this morning, or would you like to explain in a rational, adult manner why Ms. Duckworth is unqualified for the position she has been appointed to?

What you posted is pure drivel. Our regular trolls can do better than that.

  33. A Patriotic Anopheles Acting says:

Duck Kunter and General Jack Pricklicker: Ms. Duckworth has sacrificed more for her Country than either of you two idiots. Her experience more than qualifies her for the position in Veteran’s Affairs. You both seem very bitter that Senator Johnny McNeocon wasn’t elected POTUS. Is this the basis for your inanity or is there another reason why you both came here today to belittle this woman?
