Obama will be the first U.S. president to attend a White House Seder.

ap0807240676.jpg Last night, the White House released President Obama’s schedule for the remainder of the week, which included participation in the White House Seder on Thursday:

On Thursday, President Obama will participate in an event at the White House where he will discuss the need to enhance the quality of healthcare afforded to members of our Armed Forces and our Veterans. The Press Secretary will brief in the afternoon. President Obama and his family will mark the beginning of Passover with a Seder at the White House with friends and staff.

The Jerusalem Post notes that Thursday’s event is “believed to be the first White House Seder attended by an American president.” Yesterday, Obama also issued an official White House letter with his “warmest wishes to all celebrating the sacred festival of Passover.” “Chag sameach,” he added. And a little FYI, it’s pronounced \?s?-d?r\, does not rhyme with “feeder”.

Mmmm, pickled fish paste goes great with Borsht (vomits in mouth).

At least Matzo ball soup rocks, when you add plenty of chicken stock.

  6. stateofthedivision says:

It’s nice for President Obama to honor his Jewish high level staffers in the White House.

Just don’t invite the new Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.

  7. larkohio says:

Good for him. I was lucky enough to attend one once, and found it moving and very interesting.

  8. paleolib says:

Let’s see if this is enough for Glenn Beck to finally lose his last tenuous grip on reality and start blaming the Jews for everything.

  9. NOLIESPLEASE says:

Total class act!!!! Respect and tollerance is all we ask. I’m not religious but I respect others wishes as long as they respect mine and others.

    Thank You Obama.

Now…lets discuss the wire tapping issue sir????? There are unanswered questions.

THE White House Seder? Is this an annual event? I know Steve Rabinowitz held one during the Clinton days (mentioned in the linked article), but I’m curious to know how often the White House has one.

It’s good President Obama is doing this. I have always welcomed the opportunity to participate in rituals and observances practiced by faiths and cultures other than my own. Horizons are for broadening.

  13. fergus says:

Barak Hussein Obama will be kicked out of his secret mosque for this. The UberChristians over at FoxSpews are going to twist themselves into knots figuring out how to spin this one.

Way to Go President Obama – I believe we’re going to have the change we need!

  16. Marie says:

Obama has shown more class in 8 weeks than Bush showed in 8 years. He returns from the Muslim world, and he joins in the Jewish Passover. I expect he will attend a christian church on Sunday.

  18. YoungSloshee says:

Thomas Jefferson held that, if one religion is afforded protection in this country, all religions deserve equal protection and treatment. Tolerance and understanding should not be thought of as dirty words. Good move on attending the Seder, Obama!

On a side note, ironic that G. Beck will rail against working with other cultural groups as a move towards facism, all the while playing footage of Nazi rallies on a thirty-foot screen behind him.

  31. ralph the wonder locust says:

angels, no, “PromotePeace” is not for real. he’s a familiar, sad troll who every once in a while shows up with some lame handle (it usually has “Progress” capitalized in its name. Today it’s “Peace” instead) and he spouts these lame reactionary screeds that are supposed to be parodies of what right-wingers think are progressive positions. Then he over-cranks the nut, stripping the threads, as he adds the same kind of violent rhetoric that the right favors.

He can’t understand why his cover doesn’t last for even a single post.

Maybe if he didn’t have his pointed hood on under his baseball cap…

I think having the Pesach Seder at the White House is a wonderful event. It shows how inclusive Pres. Obama truly is. It is unfortunate that other Presidents before him were creative enough to do this. WTG! Mr. Obama.

    Flagging, …flagging…. flagging….

Man, I feel like I’m prepping the ski slopes.

I’ve planted more flags here today than I have EVER in the years I’ve been here.

And, I am no lover of Israel (the nation and its policies, nor the extent to which America supports and aids them) — however, this troll is truly, truly offensive.

Please remove this idiot, and soon….

  47. YoungSloshee says:

There are more effective ways to argue against the promotion of Zionism, which I strongly doubt is the aim of Obama’s attendance of this event. Every religion has its share of dishing out and receiving s#!& in regards to “non-believers”, so we should take a step back and see this as an act of reconciliation, not condemnation of others.

The left has enough on its hands dealing with kneejerk reactions from Fox News, the Nation, Drudge Report, etc. Thinking this as a Jewish plot by the president against those of Arabic heritage is, at the very least, paranoid.

  48. angels81 says:

Thanks to TP for removing and banning the racist troll. I don’t like flagging people who I disagree with, but this clown was way over the top.

    Yay. Thank you TP.

Can I be done flagging for a while? I don’t particualrly enjoy it.

And I just don’t have a lot to say on this — I am glad to see the president acting in a professional statesman manner, and working his butt off.

Now — could the REST of our politicians actaully start working THEIR butts off (and, by the rod of Priapus, a LOT of them could lose a bit of butt).

  50. angels81 says:

  56. Hoodathunktick says:

Proud Says: Why is this even a topic for discussion?

Contrary to trollish belief, all discussion is not negative. After 8 years, it is a welcome relief to have a President acting in a civilized manner. And the open hand is not just for face slapping, bible thumping and other forms of violent behavior.

A pat on the back gets much more done.

  59. Jackie says:

Our President comes with the respect and manners he learned as a child. How easy it is for people to forget God is not a Religion but Reiligions try to follow the teachings of God. Yes many use God’s name in vain as we’ve seen but their are those that truely believe and do their best. America is made up of many Religions but One God. The respect President Obama is showing is not only for his Jewish Staff but for all American Jews and the Jewish people around the World. It’s often said actions speak louder then words. Bush spoke and used God’s name but not action was done for 8 years. Last then 3 months in office President Obama has shown not only respect/manners but he’s allowed the World to see we have an American President who now works for the people and will guide us in the right direction.

  60. freeman says:

Perhaps Fox should collaborate with Think Progress and do a series of reports on Obama’s justice department’s burying the lawsuits and information needed to conduct them, on wireless wiretapping and extraordinary rendition ?
Obama has done some VERY amazing things in a very short time which have exceeded my expectation .However these are not among them !
National security is not enhanced by leaving the rest of the planet and our own citizenry the impression that we do not abide by our international or constitutional agreements and that when our elected officials act illegally torturing and acting in such a way as to lead to the deaths of a million people their criminality is protected by the very officials who have sworn to uphold the law !

Dumb Question about the inevitable criticism of Obama extending Passover observances, Muslim greetings, etc:

Let’s imagine the next elected president is an orthodox, observant, jew.
