Gov. Paterson to introduce marriage equality legislation in New York.

New York Gov. David Paterson (D) today said that he plans to re-introduce legislation making same-sex marriage legal in the state. “We’ll put a bill out and let the people decide one way or the other,” Paterson told WHCU-AM in Ithaca. In 2007, then-governor Eliot Spitzer introduced similar legislation, but it stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate. The state Senate is now controlled by Democrats but “still appears a few votes shy from having the 32 votes needed for passage.” New York state currently recognizes same-sex marriages performed legally in other states.

    Best news I’ve read all day. It was always curious that New York (my state) has been lagging behind.. Iowa. But I suppose that rat’s nest of politics in Albany has a great deal to do with it. Paterson has made such a botch of things recently, I wonder if he feels he has nothing to lose to introduce this while he can.

    In any case, long overdue, and we’ll see how it goes.

    That’s great, Governor Paterson, and while you’re at it, why not have New York State ratify the Child Labor Amendment to the Constitution? It’s still out there, and it’s still active (it had no expiration date built in), and it still hasn’t been ratified by our great state. I totally support the rights of gay people to marry each other and enjoy all the benefits of marriage, but I would be even prouder of you if you would get the Legislature (or referendum vote of the people) to ratify the Child Labor Amendment.     I don’t know if you know this about New York State, but nothing, and I mean nothing, gets passed unless the Governor, the Speaker of the Assembly, and the Senate Majority Leader all agree to it. Until recently, the Senate was controlled by the Republicans (while the Democrats had the Governorship and the Assembly, and still do), and they weren’t eager to have New York be the first state to legalize or recognize same-sex marriages.

    I doubt it’ll pass. The Dem majority has a few nuts in it when the Dems won majority rule last Novemeber; the Dem majority is by around three seats or so and a few senators threatened to vote with the other folks if same gender marriage came up for a vote.

Also, Paterson’s move does not cater to the mainstream thus it won’t help his poll numbers. At best he would break even and I doubt that. Paterson is being politically brave. This is the right thing to do.

    As Ray Taliaferro says, 2/3 of marriages end in divorce and 1/2 of the 1/3 mot divorced wished they were.

    But absolutely, if one really wants to get married, the law should allow it regardless of orientation.

    Personally, I feel the business arrangement created by marriage license kills the relationship.

    As for the “spewing”, we’ve got a small sample here:

    This qualification “..by a loving, tolerant, giving same sex couple…” does nothing to make an unnatural marriage – a so-called same-same gender marriage – any more natural. It doesn’t make the homosexual participants less sinful. In addition, this phrase describes very few homosexuals.

    Many are diseased because of their behavior. Some are even “bug chasers” – deliberately trying to become HIV+.

A devotee of the white supremacist Web site Stormfront, Poplawski believed that the United States was controlled by a secret Jewish cabal that had a master plan to abrogate freedom of speech and use the U.S. military to police Americans.

    It would be easy for us to cordon Poplawski off, pretend that his ugly and paranoid worldview had nothing to do with the Obama hatred spouted by the American right. But the truth is that Poplawski’s hateful views cannot be separated from the increasingly extreme ideology and rhetoric that characterize the contemporary American conservative movement. As his friend, Edward Perkovic, told the Associated Press, Poplawski feared “the Obama gun ban that’s on the way” and “didn’t like our rights being infringed upon.”

    Such obsessions don’t come out of a vacuum. Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and the GOP have been whipping up hatred and fear of Obama and “liberal Democrats” for years. Joined by the National Rifle Association, which has run false and irresponsible ads claiming that Obama is planning to take away Americans’ guns, they have encouraged and helped to create a pathological right-wing subculture in which free-floating hatred of “the government” mixes with a maniacal fetish for guns. Poplawski is the diseased fruit of that ugly tree.

    An example would be Roy Masters. Very different type of show and very anti gay.

    at times while listening to kgo 810 am at night, the am signal from SF, CA. to my home in Oregon is frequently interrupted by a homo phobe hateful crazed Christian station going on and on about those who are damned to hell.

    And then there is the am radio Sunday morning church shows.

    First of all let me say that I am not a New York state resident. But I am, as a mother of a gay son, an active Gay Rights supporter and activist. From my point of view, it doesn’t matter why Patterson is making this move. Hell, it doesn’t even matter if it passes (although that would be great).Along with the Iowa and Vermont’s passing of same-sex marriage and Washington DC’s announcement that they will now recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states all in the past week, this announcement from Gov. Patterson just puts this issue out in the public. Publicity never hurts.
    Now, I have a point about the equal rights for gltb community that, to my surprise and dissapointment, NOBODY as of yet has brought up. I first had this thought a few years ago when the Bush admin first bashed gays rights (in my opinion anyway). The main point that Bush made back then, is the point that anti-gay right supporters are making now, is that it will destroy the family because GOD and the BIBLE state that marriage should be between a man and a woman….but wasn’t one of the cornerstones of our country’s founding to keep all americans free from tyranny and RELIGOUS persecution by SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE
    I was taught in school that this is one of the major things that sets us apart from other nations. That we are free to worship, love and live however we choose with no threat of persecution or discrimination from the government. The fact that this is an issue at all in this nation is an abomination.

    darr, I have been arguing the separation of church and state part of the gay marriage issue for years, including here at TP. I do so to protect the rights of gays (and any other minority) but also to protect religious rights. Any law based on any religious doctrine is discriminatory against other religious doctrine.

    Many of us here at TP argue for gay rights very strongly. The gay rights threads are often our longest and most passionate. You might want to look at some of the archives to see what I mean. You can check just the last two days for examples.

But when I said “nobody” as of yet has brought up the separation of church and state in regards to gay rights, I meant nobody who has authority, ie no political representative, high ranking attorney or any major news anchor has brought this up. Don’t you think it’s time someone in authority should be screaming about this…besides Herrara, the city attorney for San Francisco.

I challenge you to review the 62 counties in New York State for the level of service provided by the individual Health Departments and then look at the Health Department servicing NYC.     It’s about time!! The time is now for NY… when Iowa is more progressive than NY it really speaks loudly!! The Mid-West is known for its conservative attitudes. Now, we have a state in the Mid-West that has done the right thing. It really is time for NY to come to terms with this issue. This has nothing to do with religion… although same-sex unions were celebrated at the alter IN the church (about) 500 years BEFORE straight marriages were!!
