During his primetime press conference last month, reporters repeatedly asked President Obama whether he would have to abandon his priorities in order to grapple with the budget deficit. But in a new survey, Pew Research finds that a strong majority of the American people prioritize increased spending on most of Obama’s goals over cutting the deficit. 59 percent say that when it comes to budget tradeoffs, they “would place a higher priority on spending more money to make health care more accessible and affordable than on reducing the budget deficit.” A nearly identical majority (58 percent) also said that they place a higher priority on investing to improve education than on deficit reduction.

I, for one, am shocked. Shocked I say.
April 8th, 2009 at 4:42 pmThe Right Wing won’t care. After all, it’s not like this is a democracy….

April 8th, 2009 at 4:44 pmWhat do we want? Health care. When do we want it? NOW! Say it again, louder.
April 8th, 2009 at 4:50 pmThe funny thing is that the right wing lead by Joe Scarborough has been waving around a Pew poll about President Obama being so polarizing and how the Republicans hate his guys but Democrats love him, blah blah blah. I’ll bet dollars to donuts they don’t even acknowledge that this poll exists.
April 8th, 2009 at 4:55 pmHealth care reform and education? HELL YEAH!
April 8th, 2009 at 4:58 pmThe long term salvation of the country lies in addressing these issues. It must be done soon. If we continue to punt these issues as the republicans seem bent on doing. We will regret it in the long run. The majority of the people seem to get it. We fall further and further behind in these areas with devastating consequences. Plans need to be made with more than a few years in mind. That is what I saw in Obama and I still believe that is his vision. We ignore these items at our peril.
April 8th, 2009 at 4:59 pmWow…real people want real solutions for real people.
Spin that you right wing Bitc$es!

April 8th, 2009 at 5:08 pmOkay so Scarborough is their leader? I have been having such a hard time finding out who their skipper is. I ask but they seem really unsure…

That’s because terrorist networks don’t have any ONE leader — its a netwok of “cells”.
April 8th, 2009 at 5:11 pmRepublicans want to reduce the deficit since they’re the ones that caused it, right? That would makes since, but becuase of the choices, it’s more likely that they are choosing ‘the lesser of two evils’.
April 8th, 2009 at 5:20 pmoops, first ’since’ should be sense
April 8th, 2009 at 5:21 pmWait, the last eight years it was spend, spend, spend, de-regulate, tax cuts for the rich, less government and NOW it’s cut spending, decrease taxes for the rich, even less government (by the Democrats) & more military spending for Haliburton/KBR and the like during a depression?
I am so confused. They screwed us over for eight years now and the greed caught up to them and they want to screw us over even worse? REPUBLICANS, you lost. You know that sh*t sandwich the democrats have been eating and smelling for the last eight years? It’s your turn and we hope you enjoy the aroma. The big difference is we care about ALL AMERICANS, not just the REPUBLICANS and their rich friends.
April 8th, 2009 at 5:23 pmI got it Cagey Cretin…on the first glance!
April 8th, 2009 at 5:23 pmThat survey reflects what real people think.
April 8th, 2009 at 5:26 pmWhat repugs think is another story.
Let’s get it straight:
Conservative philosophy says deficit spending is good for the economy.
Either it is or it isn’t. It can’t be both; and it can’t change just because the economy tanks.
If anything, government spending boosts the economy when the vaunted unregulated free-market Capitalism established by those backing Conservatism totally collapses.
To get it straight, here’s what happened:
April 8th, 2009 at 6:14 pmthe Congress and the Supreme Court rigged American Capitalism to favor the wealthy and powerful and corporations over the Common Good of the People who live and work here. The rich got richer by stealing the economic resources of the Common Man and looting the public treasury. In fact, the looting is still going on. In the meantime, the so-called Conservatives are upset that the masses are being tossed a few crumbs; they’re upset that they may not be able to steal those crumbs as well.
Democrats wont health care and RepubliCons wont military spending and war. Conservatives deny Americans health care, which causes Americans to die at home, and conservatives support phoney Iraq War, which causes Americans to die overseas. The RepubliCon Party is the party of the Grim Reaper! You have to be a real sicko to still be a member of the RepubliCon Party.
April 8th, 2009 at 8:00 pmI’d take the cries for deficit reduction much, much more seriously if Bush and republican congress had done anything toward this in the last 8 years.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:28 pmMore spending on education? We already spend more per student than nearly every nation in the world. Montana spends much less per student on education than Washington DC does, but students in Montana perform much better on the standardized tests. Why? Maybe it has something to do with the social structure? The US also spends more per capita on health care than any other country in the world. We have the best doctors and technology in the world here. If you want second rate care, go socialized. MapleStreet-The Republicans did not hold Congress for the last 8 years. The first two of Bush’s administration, the Dems held the Senate and they held Congress the last two. Look what Obama has spent in the first two months of his administration. Makes Bush look like a miser.
April 9th, 2009 at 9:32 amJust the Facts,
Please get the facts first. We spend more per student than most of the 3rd world. However, many countries are leaving us in the dust both in amount spent on education and their educational scores. Seek for example, most of the nordic countries.
April 9th, 2009 at 3:55 pmSo, I was just reading an article posted on Change.org. It was talking about how we need to tax soda and other sugary drinks because they are obviously unhealthy. Does anyone realize that by going to social healthcare, we will have a whole slew of stupid laws like this being passed in order to force people to be more healthy so the healthcare isn’t too expensive. Do you smoke? Are you overweight? Any family histories of diabetes? The possibilities are endless. How much of your freedom to choose without penalty are you willing to give up so you can save money on health care. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Someone has to pay for the healthcare. Just because you aren’t paying it to an insurance company doesn’t mean you won’t pay even more to the federal government. Only now you won’t get a discount for being healthy and not smoking. They’ll decide how much you pay based on your income. Class Warfare. All the supporters of this social health care are idiots.
