Pastor Rick Warren, who drew criticism from both the left and the right when he was chosen to give the invocation at President Obama’s Inauguration, explained on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show last night how he deals with being “a pretty big target” in public life. “My number one goal in life is to have a Christ-like ministry,” said Warren, pointing out that Jesus “hung out” with questionable people such as prostitutes and tax collectors. Warren then said that Jesus “would have hung out with Democrats” today. Before Warren could finish his thought, Hewitt interjected with, “and Republicans,” prompting Warren to include more than just Democrats in his comparison:
HH: But does it surprise you?
RW: No, because as much as I want…my number one goal in life is to have a Christ-like ministry, to treat people the way Jesus did. And Jesus hung out with prostitutes, tax collectors and all different kinds of people. Today, he would have hung out with Democrats…
HH: And Republicans.
RW: …and Republicans, and he would have hung out with gays and with…
HH: Illegal immigrants.
RW: …Muslims and Jews and Christians. And today, so much of the pickiness is look who he ate with, look who he associated with. And if you’re going to have a Christ-like ministry, you’re going to be criticized like Christ.
Listen here:
Fourteen Defining Characteristics of Fascism
#8. Religion and ruling elite tied together.
Unlike communist regimes, the fascist and protofascist regimes were never proclaimed as godless by their opponents. In fact, most of the regimes attached themselves to the predominant religion of the country and chose to portray themselves as militant defenders of that religion. The fact that the ruling elite’s behavior was incompatible with the precepts of the religion was generally swept under the rug. Propaganda kept up the illusion that the ruling elites were defenders of the faith and opponents of the “godless.” A perception was manufactured that opposing the power elite was tantamount to an attack on religion.

:)
April 8th, 2009 at 2:37 pmnot just “hung out with” Rick…
…loved. And stood up for – against the priests, and against the royalty and the monied classes.
Looks like Rick’s still got a ways to go to achieve that “Christ-like” appellation.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:40 pmSomehow, I think Jesus would have had the same opinion of some Republicans as he had of the Pharisees: people who put on the outward appearance of religious devotion without having a similar feeling for their fellow men (and women), not to mention God, in their hearts.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:40 pmThat begs the question: would he have hung out with Rick Warren? I’m just asking.
wrong again, Mr. Dogwash, but Jesus loves you just the same.

Let’s see how long people like Rick Warren would be preaching if there was no MONEY involed ????? as long as it takes for me to finish this joint with jesus. Back to you jc…no hogging remember.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:43 pmOh, and RW should stay out of politics completely.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:43 pmI find this to be a bit difficult to categorize, a bit of a stretch if you want to produce metaphors. Warren did not directly compare Democrats to prostitutes; he was basically saying that Jesus associates with all likes of people. It was perhaps his mistake to end on Democrats without including Republicans, but it might have been on his tongue when Hewett interjected.
I take more offense that Warren’s comparing himself to Jesus Christ.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:43 pmWhy is Rick Warren relevant?
April 8th, 2009 at 2:45 pmIt appears Warren, as so many like him, has to put more effort into staying away from the perverse and evil.

It’s the biggest scam in history.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:46 pmI’ll have to (painfully) agree with watchdog in regard to the title of this post. It seems a bit out of context. It could just as easily read “Did Rick Warren compare Democrats to tax collectors?”.
watchdog says:
April 8th, 2009 at 2:47 pmHe is simply stating that the democrats are least in line with core principals of Jesus teachings.
And here I disagree. Nowhere is he stating that.
The mind set of conservatives like Warren are FAR from being even close to Christ-like.
Their bigotry, general stupidity and ignorance will always hold them back.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:48 pmtheir supposedly all-powerful god sure seems to need a lot of salesmen – seems pretty weak to me
April 8th, 2009 at 2:48 pmShort answer: No
Long answer: It’s telling that when Pastor Warren was making his statement regarding the ministry of Jesus, that the first group that leapt off his tongue with prostitutes, tax collectors, etc. was Democrats. It may be that he would have added other groups like Republicans to his list had he been allowed to continue uninterrupted, but I actually find it hard to believe the Hugh Hewitt would leap to Warren’s rescue like that….
April 8th, 2009 at 2:49 pmhe didn’t say “he would have hung out with gays”

watchdog Says:
He is simply stating that the democrats are least in line with core principals of Jesus teachings.
I don’t get that from this quote alone. I get the idea that Jesus Christ would associate with people of different races, beliefs, and political affiliations. If anything, I have a feeling Jesus would have honored and respected the separation of church and state and viewed the common man and woman as humans in need of guidance.

April 8th, 2009 at 2:56 pmPRick Warren proved himself to be a liar and a hypocrit on national TV just last summer. After promising that McCain was secreted in the “cone of silence” (liar) he went on grill Obama on his past while giving McCain a total pass on his adultery, his divorcing the disabled mother of his children for rich, young drug-addicted Arizona Barbie.
Jesus had quite a thing about liars and hypocrits.

____________________________________________________________
Rick Warren is either delusional or he’s spinning so much he’s going to need a chiropractor.
Warren is criticized — yes. But not because he “hangs out” with prostitutes, Democrats, tax collectors, etc. It’s because of his bigotry and intolerance toward certain groups of people that’s made him a target.
If he were to sincerely try and emulate Jesus Christ, I doubt he’d get much criticism at all. Except maybe from pompous evangelicals (today’s Pharisees).

Based on that, I don’t take any offense to Mr. Warren’s comment.

Jesus would not be happy with how you treat your fellow man or woman by choosing your followers based on their skin color or for whom they sleep with or who they might be deep down inside. Jesus was not in it for the ALMIGHTY dollar.

I will admit that there might not be much relevance with this entry on Warren. I don’t see the point in reporting what he says as being notable, but one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
As far as Rush is concerned, let’s not forget that ThinkProgress stands for “media accountability” and is not simply a news medium. You won’t necessarily find BREAKING NEWS here. When you claim I’m the sinner, are you not judging me, then?
No matter how well you mask that damnation with your false love of me, people see through that mask for what it hides…
… A JUDGMENT OF ME!

Still haven’t quite mastered the art of that response, eh bud? I do admire your persistence, though, and appreciate you being a consistent source of amusement. ;)
You still failed to give your opinion of those who have suggested that our President is weak minded or has a mental disorder. I know that you disagree with them and that you have the utmost respect for our President and his intellectual abilities. ;)

Hey max, how’s it going? God and His Word are definitely the only valid source of identification of sin. Calling someone judgmental is usually effective in a discussion. It’s somewhat important, though, that the person has actually judged you. Feel free to show where I posted anything in reference to you. ;)
Calling a sin a sin, as stated by the Bible, is hardly being judgmental. Otherwise, it would be judgmental to say that murder is a sin. I would be judgmental if I acted as though I’m free from sin or that the sin of another is any worse than my sin. Your sins and mine are equally abhorrent to the Lord.

April 9th, 2009 at 11:24 amupright left,
Christian? Let go of the Old Testament.
Christian? Follow Christ’s commandments.
Christian? Hold on tight to that stone.
Christian? Accept that judgment back.
Look upright,
No where did Christ say to judge your brother for their sins? No where. And the moment you take a position of superiority over what your brother does and lay a condemnation upon him for it labeling him a sinner, is the very moment you’ve judged him. For you do not know what God deems to be sinful. You only know what was written by man, edited by man, and published by man.
Which is a greater sin, then…
… Fornication or playing God?
Now that you know my “sin”, will you tell us yours?

Since you don’t believe the Bible is God’s Word, it won’t do us any good to discuss what we think He considers sin.
You are right. I’m not called to judge you, so I don’t. I didn’t call you a sinner, the Bible does. We are all sinners. I don’t assume superiority over anyone. Perhaps you missed my comment that our sins are equally abhorrent to the Lord. I can’t make it much clearer than that. Talking about a sin doesn’t mean you are being judged. The difference is that I’m not asking the govt to legitimize my sin.
As for my sins? They are largely the same ones of which the majority of people are guilty; nothing out of the ordinary. I assume you are looking to start a discussion of whether or not I adhere to the cultural requirements of the Jews in the Old Testament? I’m not Jewish, so, no I don’t. ;)
