Spontaneous Uprising? Corporate Lobbyists Helping To Orchestrate Radical Anti-Obama Tea Party Protests

Yesterday, Think Progress reported on Republican lawmakers planning to speak at anti-Obama “tea party” protests taking place nationwide on April 15. Last night, Eric Odom of the DontGo website — one of the organizers of the protests — wrote a blog post stressing that these protests are displays of “regular American[s] in protest of government spending and extreme taxation,” rather than something affiliated with a political party or special interest agenda.

Today on Fox News — which has actively been promoting the protests — Glenn Beck pushed the tea party talking points, similarly claiming that the protests aren’t “coordinated” and are fully organized by “regular” people. Watch it:

Despite these attempts to make the “movement” appear organic, the principle organizers of the local events are actually the lobbyist-run think tanks Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works. The two groups are heavily staffed and well funded, and are providing all the logistical and public relations work necessary for planning coast-to-coast protests:

Freedom Works staffers coordinate conference calls among protesters, contacting conservative activists to give them “sign ideas, sample press releases, and a map of events around the country.”

Freedom Works staffers apparently moved to “take over” the planning of local events in Florida.

Freedom Works provides how-to guides for delivering a “clear message” to the public and media.

Freedom Works has several domain addresses — some of them made to look like they were set up by amateurs — to promote the protests.

Americans for Prosperity is writing press releases and planning the events in New Jersey, Arizona, New Hampshire, Missouri, Kansas, and several other states.

This type of corporate ‘astroturfing‘ is nothing new to either organization. While working to promote Social Security privatization, Freedom Works was caught planting one of its operatives as a “single mom” to ask questions to President Bush in a town hall on the subject. Last year, the Wall Street Journal exposed Freedom Works for similarly building “amateur-looking” websites to promote the lobbying interests of Dick Armey, the former Republican Majority Leader who now leads Freedom Works and is a lobbyist for the firm DLA Piper.

Americans for Prosperity is run by Tim Phillips, who was Ralph Reed’s former partner in the lobbying firm Century Strategies. The group is funded by Koch family foundations — a family whose wealth is derived from the oil industry. Indeed Americans for Prosperity has coordinated pro-drilling ‘grassroots‘ events around the country.

Update This afternoon, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, leader of the corporate-funded American Solutions for Winning the Futures (ASWF), blasted an e-mail to his supporters with a reminder to attend the protests, along with a "Toolkit" of talking points. Gingrich's ASWF is funded by polluters and helped orchestrate the "Drill Here, Drill Now" campaign last summer. ASWF has been an official "partner" in the tea party effort since at least March.

  4. misscoleopteramolly says:

Yeah, this whole thing is about as spontaneous as a shuttle launch. And I’m not even sure what the organizers think they’re going to accomplish, because the premise is so stupid.

They’re not going to convince President Obama of anything.

I would be willing to bet that the vast majority of the people participating in one of these events won’t fully grasp the issues at hand. Oh, wait — that’s it! This isn’t so much an effort to let Washington know of the people’s dissatisfaction (like the Civil Rights march in Washington in 1963). It’s more like a giant marketing effort to sell the public a pack of lies. And they’re counting on their audience not knowing what the original Boston Tea Party was really about. Got it.

  10. Purple State says:

The problem with the Tea Parties is that they are not spontaneous nor grassroots, no matter how much Beck protests. These tea parties are starting to feel like the second Woodstock festival–complete with sponsorship from the “fair and balanced” Fox News Channel.

The good news for Griff Jenkins is that he might not find himself in a progressive march this time.

I wish I could find confirmation of this, but I once heard that in a poll (yes, I disagree with poll results), something like 19% of the population thinks they are in the top 1% of income earners. That would be funny if it weren’t so tragically idiotic.

  26. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

    johnfive,

I never said you liked Bush. I asked why President Obama frightens you so much. And it is completely false to suggest that “he is doing the same things as Bush. Only more accelerated…”.

  27. johnfive says:

@Purple State – I started to hate Bush after he started to exploit 9/11. Which was fairly soon after he took office.
    But anyways…
My observation is that many people in America are desperately looking for a miracle worker and they fully expect Obama to be that person. The reality is neither Obama or any other president is a miracle worker. In America Congress and the president pander to the public to get elected and re-elected by making promises they never plan to keep. This is the norm for most politicians. Americans as a group are very naive. The sad reality is Obama and friends on Capitol Hill didn’t even know the country was in a recession for over 12 months until they got a memo in Dec. ‘08 None of these politicians has any clue how to create permanent U.S. jobs to build a stable economy. Instead they plan to throw trillions at welfare programs and drive up the national debt. This will just extend the economic depression to a full decade or more.

Hes going to resume the ’security and prosperity partnership’ with Mexico and Canada that Bush started. If you thought NAFTA was bad then this would be NAFTA on steroids.

    Scary if you ask me.

  33. teri3157 says:

This is some sort of counter revolution ala’ Merry Prankster style that the socially retarded multi-generational republicans never “grokked” during the 60’s…this is how far behind the curve the wing nuts actually are (yes, I know this is a poor sentence, but it was the best way to state my premise). They are trying to act like 60’s protesters, but, they don’t have anything to say. If indeed they did, then why would they have to lay out a premise of hate and lies as the theme for their protest? Huh?

I don’t get it, but, I do know they will probably be armed and dangerous and run around the streets like gang thugs
…hope they get arrested and held on conspiracy to overthrow the government.

  34. Purple State says:

Here’s an email address we can ALL send our “What do you think?” responses to, for Glen Beck and his team of winners. Let’s applaud his comments on how we feel about why the 911 victims and family members are so horrible and worthless, commend him on instigating the shooting of police officers in PA, let’s tell him how we don’t understand what it’s like to work paycheck to paycheck, how we don’t get it on why others have to use credit cards to buy food or how some just can’t
do anything for fun anymore for it’s too expensive. The middle of the country is hurting yes, just like the East & West coasts like everywhere else, except to those at Fix Noise.

  37. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

    johnfive,

Well, at least you seem to have reasons. I do not agree that ALL of his cabinet members are “tied to Wall Street” though I am aware that Timothy Geithner headed the New York Federal Reserve Board. Want to hear something that may surprise you? I’m not happy with Geithner, either.

As for the “’security and prosperity partnership’ with Mexico and Canada”, I am unaware of anything about that. If I were allowed to guess, I would guess that he is simply continuing current policies until he can decide how best to change them within the context of all the other changes that need to be made.

Let me ask you something. How do you feel about repealing the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act of 1999? It was a major cause of the current financial crisis.

  38. Xisithrus says:

Obama’s plan to lower mortgage payments would never have occurred under a republican president.

And the plan will start taking applicants on the 15th of this month according to Wells Fargo, so it’s promise made, promise kept.

    *****
I agree this wouldn’t be a plan done on the rupublicons watch, however, there are a few catches here. First, to refinance you have to pay closing costs all over again, which can be as high as 10K in states like NJ so that gets added to the principal balance. Second, after a few years the interest rate goes back to where it was. So after those few years you’ve actually increased your principal balance. Third, the program isn’t available to people who have two mortgages such as an 80/10/10. Really isn’t worth it in the end.

    I’ll bite. I like skunk.

TP and CAP are not claiming to be “spontaneous grassroots” experessions of “the average citizen”. They are progressive and political, and admittedly so. Posters are not organized to come and post on this site — you are free to find it and post, or not.

The extent and accuracy of your “lobbyist and corporate” claims I am not familiar with. However, again, I don’t perceive any deception from TP or CAP on that matter, either.

What is clear is that framing of these tea protests is intentioanlly deceptive, claiming that they are spontaneous eruptions of like minded citizenry of the average worker-type who have “had enough”, when the FACT is that these are being advertised, organized and orchestrated by lobbyists and corporations, all the while denying the lobby and corporate influence — these are partizan protests. And it is just fine to have a peaceful partizan protest, but it is not fine to try to claim that these are not partizan, not organized/funded by partizan or corporate interests, and representative of the average citizen, because all three of those are lies.

And note well, many, MANY peaceful protesters, who demonstrated in a purely peaceful way, have been beaten, gassed and arrested by the police. For my own part I hope to see some justice served, as many of those attending these events will be those who laugh at images of peaceful protesters being beaten by the police. …. and that these events remain peaceful is highly doubtful, considering the predelictions of some of the organizers and their followers who will be attendees.

TP and CAP are not protests. Comparing either to organized protests is impossible — there is no basis for comparison. So, no, there is NO “pot and kettle” here.

Discussed. Have a nice day, stinkybutt.

I would gladly attend a counterprotest or something, but being that I’m an accountant, I actually have to work to get these whiners their refunds. The VAST majority of people get refunds, many of them good sized, yet they still manage to complain about it. I can understand complaints coming from people who are getting a tax increase, though I find that more than slightly selfish, but these people are complaining about policies that are designed to help them.

I’m going to go as a Republican for Halloween this year. I’m just going to walk around chastising people for what they’re doing, then proceed to do exactly the same thing. If I’m feeling extra self-destructive, I may carry a BB gun around with me and repeatedly shoot myself in the foot, then complain about the pain.

  136. Rodeskawler says:

The Tea Party Protests are actually Republican affirmative action protests.

Republicans, which include DINO’s like Bayh, Lincoln and NAFTA Nancy, think that Chinese, Vietnam, Guam, Vietnam and Mexico peasants have more of a right to your job than you do, since they gave the multi-national corporations tax inventives to send your job to them.

These tea parties are not meant to be anti-Obama even though a small minority will make them that. I am the mother of 3 and my husband and I are doing pretty good with a combined income of 50,000 a year. So we aren’t super rich, but we aren’t poor either. I am not a Republican or Democrat. I wish we could please stop this “left” vs. “right”, Dems vs. Republicans and vise versa war. I try to look at raw facts when forming my opinions. That having been said, I am going to my local tea party. My first ever protest. I am not doing this because Fox news, any talking head told me to. The problems our nation face did not start with George Bush or Barack Obama. The trajectory began almost 100 years ago and has slowly been building. I should have been out protesting earlier, but I believed that surely our leaders would come to their senses on both sides of the isle and start reigning in spending. We have a huge unfunded commitment to Social Security and we stole from it to continue spending and to delay the inevitable pain. Blame can be laid at many people’s feet, but ultimately we must lay it at our own for failing to act. I blame myself for being silent too long. I was appalled by the Patriot Act and the assault to our liberties it represents, but I just complained! I was frustrated over increases in spending and the Iraqi war under Bush, but again I just complained! Then came the bailout and TARP fiasco and I became alarmed and I finally did something and contacted my representatives, but they voted for it anyway. Then came the huge stimulus plan and again I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. They hadn’t even read it! Our debt soaring, just when the Baby Boomers will soon come calling for their promised benefits and also begin withdrawing from the tax paying work force. Again I contacted my lawmakers, but again they all voted for it! Then what I really hoped for, troop withdraw, is being delayed and the troops in Afghanistan increased. I was so hopeful that Pres. Obama would bring our troops home. I have to go and share my concern that our country is debasing our Dollar and amassing a debt that our GDP can’t support. Even by raising taxes, we can’t cover increasing debt and our SS obligations. I must stand up and say at least I tried to stop the reckless spending on ALL sides of the isle. This isn’t sustainable. We have to act now. I know that many of you will think I am ignorant and perhaps you are right. I just love my country and I can’t bear to see her spent into oblivion. My voice is small, but I must try no matter how useless others think it is. Maybe nothing will change, but I know it can’t if we don’t speak up and take a stand. I will go to this tea party out of love for my country and not hatred for others. I won’t be shouting or screaming, just quietly saying, “I’m here! Please listen!”

  147. mosby12 says:

The truth is that we will need much greater tax increases and social programs to undo the greed of the Bush administration. We need to punish the greedy, help the homeless, the children and the inner city. Corporations are destroying America. Health care, food, medicine, housing and transportation should all be FREE.

  148. colinjames says:

    miller123-

Go if you want to go; just be aware that this “protest” tea-party thing isn’t what it’s advertised to be. In fact, it’s just about the opposite- not a grassroots movement by ordinary americans to protest spending, but a corporate-sponsored farce to derail adminstration policies which may hurt corporate profits by limiting their ability to exploit workers, pollute the environment, and hide their money in the Cayman Islands. More than anything it’s just a cynical attempt by the Right to cause Obama to fail at all costs, because on top of the GOP losing recent elections, they’re hemorraghing membership, and thus campaign contributions. They have no solutions, no vision, and no ideas on how to get America out of the mess that THEY have largely created- with a bit of help from Democrats, but- it WAS their policies which have basically ruined us.

The ONLY way to dig ourselves out of this whole as a country is for the Federal Govt. to spend massive amounts of money to kick-start the economy. Will it work? Time will tell. But to do nothing, or to cut spending and slash corporate taxes as the Republicans would have us do, would be disastrous. Do what you will, just please don’t be fooled by reich-wing hypocrites.

  149. miller123 says:

mosby12 what you are saying sounds like socialism to me. Please understand that I am not name-calling. If you prescribe to Socialism, that is certainly your right as an American and doesn’t make you evil! I just want you to understand that all those things you list (Health care, food, medicine, housing and transportation) can never be “FREE” because SOMEONE will have to pay for them. I have a disabled child and we could get “Free” health care via a medical card from the state if we wanted to, but chose not to since we are able to acquire private insurance for him. We pay the premiums and deductibles ourselves because WE are responsible for his care, not the government or others. If we were in a destitute position, or course we would have no choice but to accept help, but just because it would be “free” for us to take the help now doesn’t make it right. I would rather that money be used for people who really need it and not wasted on my family out of personal greed or the belief “someone” else will pay.

I agree that we have greedy individuals, but we have so many generous people as well. I can personally attest to American generosity. My son goes to Shriner’s Hospital for some of his treatments and it is 100% free to us because of the generous donations of thousands of American’s, but the main reason we go there is because their treatments are hands down THE BEST in the nation! (And yes I do work actively to repay my “debt” to them by working charity events whenever I can!)

Would you agree that “Greed” didn’t start in the Bush administration and it won’t go away now that he is gone? I wish it were that simple. Also how do we decide what “greed” is? Who makes that decision? Remember government can also be a greedy and oppressive instrument, except that it can do so lawfully and backed by force. You see with great power comes corruption, favoritism, and lucrative kickbacks. (And yes it can get worse than it already is!) You loose control of your hard earned wealth and someone else decides what is “best” for you and society and how best your money should be spent. When you lose your economic freedom, you cease to be free, as denying someone the fruits of their labor is the very definition of slavery.

I have an acquaintance that emigrated here from Russia. He grew up under the Soviet Union and told me of the utter failure of “state control”. Those who had connections got what they wanted and the others got what was left. He had never seen a Banana until he came to this country! Sure his housing, health care, and food where “free”, but he was often hungry and lived in cramped and poor conditions. And the hospitals often did not have supplies, so you had to purchase your own on the black market. Does this sound like freedom to you? How about prosperity? It didn’t matter how hard he worked, his lot in life would not improve, and it also wouldn’t get any worse if he slacked off. I know this is an extreme example, but it really happened, and isn’t it conceivable that it could happen again?

Please understand that this is not a personal attack, rather an open debate. I believe that if we all start talking we can find a solution that throws out the extremes of both sides and puts us on a path to common sense.

Sorry this is so long! It is good to talk to people of differing beliefs. Keeps you mentally flexible!

  150. Curtis L Walker says:

Frankly, this should be front page news in every news outlet in the US.

  151. miller123 says:

colinjames I want to note that I am not going to the tea party to protest taxes. Unfortunately with our current situation, lower taxes would be difficult, especially without substantial cuts in spending which is not going to happen, in fact spending has increased. Myself and a large group are actually going to encourage support for a house bill that would require the Federal Reserve be audited and make known who its funds are going to and how much money these groups have received. (Something that they currently do not have to disclose.) Start with something small and doable. Accountability in government is SO important!

Also just a “what if”: What if the government worked like a home economist. They spent less than they took in and put away the extra money (especially during the good times) in an emergency fund that would cover one year of services in case of hard times. Then instead of borrowing money and paying interest on debt, they could use their emergency money to take care of temporary short falls. If short falls are longer term, then they have to cut back on their spending to bring their budge into balance. Not increase taxes at the worst possible time.

Now let’s really dream and say that after the emergency fund is in place, government continues to put surpluses into a savings account. So now not only would the government not have to pay interest on debt, but it would also have interest payments and dividends PAID TO IT, and would therefore have more funds available to add additional services, do public infrastructure projects etc. So in essence become “independently wealthy” so that some or eventually all of the spending could be covered by interest from its investments. They are often referred to as “Sovereign Funds”. Countries like China do this and have almost two trillion in savings, I believe. Then you could either cut taxes to allow more of the citizens to keep their money and spend it in the marketplace, thereby boosting the economy, or you can keep the taxes steady and keep building up your savings. Eventually you could in theory have a large enough nest egg to pay for things like health care, college education and other social programs without raising taxes.

Of course you would NEVER want to dip into the principle investment, so you would have to make sure they stick to their budget and exercise fiscal discipline and not raid the savings funds. (Like what was done to social security!) Remember that is what the emergency fund is for.

Is this so crazy? It would take a lot of sacrifice on our part NOW, but the payoff would be a better country for future generations. Are we willing to sacrifice for our children’s future? Of course we are in deep right now, so we have to stop the bleeding first. I wish we were working harder to cut spending, but that isn’t popular right now.

  152. KCThinker says:

    miller123:

I am right there with you. I did not like the Patriot Act. I thought Iraq was a foolish gamble. I was against the Bush tax cuts. I have long been against spending recklessly. We cannot spend our way out of this recession. It has never worked and will not work now. Just like tax cuts do not stimulate an economy, pumping trillions of fake dollars into the economy will not help and it will have serious long-term consequences to the value of the dollar (but Americans are not able to look beyond their weekly TV guides anyway so why should they care). Although things appear to be looking brighter now (I would not trust the stock market to gauge the health of an economy), I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel and I would certainly not credit anyone in our government with getting us out of this mess; especially when they are the reason we are in this mess to begin with (of course along with every American that spent more than they made and bought houses and cars and boats and other crap they could not afford). Next bubble – government spending bubble.

I intend to go to the Tea Party in Kansas City. I am against spending more than we can afford. I am against an $11 trillion and rising national debt. I am against a budget deficit. I am for decreasing the defense budget by 25%, closing all foreign bases, and securing our borders. I am for a 10% across the board slashing of the remaining federal budget. I am for term limits in Congress. I am for a balanced budget amendment. I am for serious campaign finance reform. I am for a comprehensive solution to our current sick care system – we could save a lot of money by taking the friction out of health care. I am for securing social security. I am for smaller federal government.

We need to address the unsustainability of our federal government now and not push this problem on our children. If we do not address this our children (maybe even us) will have very high federal taxes (>50% at all income levels) and all the government will be able to afford will be Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, and interest on debt. Nothing else. Have you seen I.O.U.S.A.? If you have not, you should.

My worst fear is that the social conservatives trot out at the tea party and make this about abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research. This is not the time for those inconsequential issues. This is the time to demand real change that will secure the country for future generations.

Every generation should leave the world better than they found it for the next generation. Well, the baby boomers have failed by all accounts and will be leaving us a huge, sloppy mess.

witness the (possibly) above concerns about “fixing” the economy… really?
At the teabagging with Fox’s friends?
    Find another venue.

Does anyone know what the #Teaparty is about other than corporate/GOP greed? I’ve posted an article about it but I honestly cannot tell you what they’re about.

Time to attend the parties and demand that Ruppert Murdoch pay his taxes instead of finding imaginitive ways to fund republicans to help him avoid his taxes!

    Wow..
This is a joke website.. right?

To have so much liberal folly in one place is amazing…

I am laughing my butt off with some of these half-baked comments.

This is great.. keep it up!

I just listened to ThinkProgress comments on Cspan. For me the problem with your argument is your smooth dismissal of those you disagree with. The argument does not go to the party who most effectively demonizes or dismisses the opponent. It goes to the party who most effectively hears and embraces the legitimate issues of the opposition and provides more compelling answers.

When either the Tea Parties or you fail to do that, what becomes evident is a greater interest in winning a fight than in advancing strategy that effectively addresses legitimate issues and goals. Why not have confidence your proactive stance can legitimately address the legitimate issues of those you oppose?

    watchdog Says:

The participators of the original Boston tea party in 1773 did so because they felt the Tea Act violated their constitutional right to be taxed only by their own elected representatives.

And also during this time the phrase was coined “No taxation without representation”.

So, calling this a tea party is extremely relevant to the current government power intoxication.

    They’re intoxicated…..that explains some things

If the illegal aliens had been demonstrating yesterday would Nancy Peelosi have dismissed them like she disgracefully did to WE THE PEOPLE. Would she have asked them who sponsored their demonstration –LAAA RAAAAAAAZZZA. She’d be slobbering all over them. It is a sad day in American when this loon speaker of the house treats american citizens in this matter.

Why didnt, YOU THE FOOLS, protest when it was necessary! The nerve of these people who have no integrity, nor do they have respect for our government and its consisted effort in fixing this mess that our former bonehead president and his teabagging cohorts got us in!

Not only did Charles Koch senior make his initial money from design and installation of refineries in Russia in the 30’s, but he was at one time in the 60’s on the board of MIT and the John Birch Society at the same time.

They succeeded in not only getting books eliminated from the Wichita KS (home of Koch Industries) school system but even a couple of teachers removed.

The beat goes on with Charles Jr., listed by Forbes as one of the 5 richest people in the US. With tens of billions of sales each year in oil, they will surely pull out every stop to block green industries.
