Perino: ‘Where Is The Proof’ That Bush ‘Alienated’ People Around The World?

In an interview with CNN earlier this week, Vice President Biden responded to former Vice President Cheney’s criticism that the Obama administration has made America less safe by saying that “the last administration left us in a weaker posture than we’ve been in any time since World War II.” Biden added that when Bush left office, America was “less regarded” and garnered “virtually no respect in entire parts of the world.”

Former Bush Press Secretary Dana Perino responded to Biden on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor last night, claiming it was “absolutely not” true. “I actually think that we are respected in the world,” said Perino.

Asked by O’Reilly if it was “a valid point” that the Bush administration “alienated” allies with “its swaggering” at a time that “we need cooperation to defeat terrorists,” Perino replied, “Where is the proof of that?”:

O’REILLY: But they feel — the Obama administration says look, we need cooperation to defeat terrorists. And we weren’t getting it because the Bush administration alienated so many people by its swaggering and its cowboy and the Dick Cheney stuff . Isn’t that a valid point ?

PERINO: Where is the proof of that?

O’REILLY: There isn’t any proof. It’s total speculation.

PERINO: Right.

Perino then asserted that the Bush administration “had allies all over the world helping us,” so Biden is either “not being honest about the briefs that he has gotten, or he just doesn’t know.” Watch it:

In fact, there is no doubt that the Bush administration lowered America’s standing in the eyes of much of the world. In December 2008, the Pew Global Attitudes Project released a report showing that “the U.S. image abroad is suffering almost everywhere“:

Opposition to key elements of American foreign policy is widespread in Western Europe, and positive views of the U.S. have declined steeply among many of America’s longtime European allies. In Muslim nations, the wars in Afghanistan and particularly Iraq have driven negative ratings nearly off the charts. The United States earns positive ratings in several Asian and Latin American nations, but usually by declining margins.

The problems created by Bush’s “swaggering” were evident in Europe last week when President Obama convinced NATO allies to send roughly 5,000 more soldiers to Afghanistan. One analyst noted that while the troop increase was modest, Obama was able to secure “a lot more than Bush could have gotten.”

Transcript:

O’REILLY: And in the impact segment tonight, a controversy raging between Vice President Biden and former Vice President Cheney, who has said the Obama administration’s policies will make America less safe. Now, this has been going on for a while. The Obama team criticizing the Bush administration, Mr. Cheney replying. Throughout history, this kind of stuff usually did not happen, but it is occurring now.(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARACK OBAMA, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney? It hasn’t made us safer. What it has been is a great advertisement for anti-American sentiment.

JOE BIDEN, VICE PRESIDENT: The last administration left us in a weaker posture than we’ve been in any time since World War II. Less regarded in the world. Stretched more thinly than we ever had been in the past. Two wars underway. Virtually no respect in entire parts of the world.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

O’REILLY: All right. Joining us now from Washington to reply, the former spokesperson for President Obama, Dana Perino. So virtually no respect in parts of the world for the USA. Do you buy that?

DANA PERINO, FMR. WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY: Absolutely not. I think that that is — just perpetuates a myth that isn’t good for America. And it’s hard to believe that the vice president of the United States, no matter who he or she is, would ever say such a thing . I actually think that we are respected in the world. We might not always be liked, but when it comes to fighting terrorists, I’ve never seen it as a popularity contest. And I would hope that the new administration doesn’t either.

O’REILLY: But.

PERINO: Well, absolutely.

O’REILLY: .wait, wait.

PERINO: .but (INAUDIBLE).

O’REILLY: .that’s an excellent question. That’s an excellent question you just asked me. You should be doing The Factor, Dana. The Dana Factor.

(LAUGHTER)

Excellent question. It’s just speculation. That’s what Biden is saying. Total speculation.

PERINO: And it’s not true.

O’REILLY: But Cheney says the Obama policies are making America less safe. That’s speculation, too, is it not?

PERINO: Well, if you just look at the proof, for seven and a half years after 9/11, President Bush led the charge to make sure that we did what the 9/11 Commission suggested. Break down the barrier to make sure that intelligence in law enforcement can talk to one another.

The other thing we did is try to disrupt terrorist financing. We didn’t do that on our own. We had allies all over the world helping us, people that they wouldn’t even suspect. And so either he is not being honest about the briefs that he has gotten, or he just doesn’t know. and I don’t know which one is worse.

As someone who had access to AP, AFP and Reuters Wire photos for all of the administration’s destructive tenure, I saw, first hand, the hundreds of thousands of demonstrators that turned out around the World to protest George Bush’s presence in their country! The anti-Bush posters comparing him with Satan, Hitler, etc… where in the millions! Hundreds of thousands of people in every part of the World hate Bush !

This is one of the favorite tactics of trolls here when they know they have nothing (which is, let’s face it, pretty much all the time).

They take a statement of opinion or analysis and demand “proof”. And of course, they’re not asking for a well-constructed valid argument in support of the statement; they’re looking for objective, clinical proof, which doesn’t exist.

It’s a not-very-clever way of dismissing the validity of an assessment without actually challenging it.

It comes as no surprise that dear Dana is, at heart, a troll.

  22. livelongandprosper says:

PERINO: Where is the proof of that?

Besides paying attention to what the rest of world has said over the last 8 years, you could look at the “coalition of the willing” and the fact that this small group of countries grew smaller, rather than larger, with time.

Just because you ignore facts doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

When the publics of the 16 nations covered by the survey were asked to give favorability ratings of five major leading nations the United States, Germany, China, Japan, and France the U.S. fared the worst of the group

This from a 2005 study by Pew
    http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?PageID=801

    Which further states:
Perceptions of U.S. unilateralism remain widespread among the publics of America’s traditional allies. In Germany, only 38% of respondents think the U.S. takes their country’s interests into account, the highest percentage in Europe. In Canada, just 19% feel the U.S. takes Canadian interests into account to any substantial degree when making policy.

  32. misscoleopteramolly says:

Hmmm…let’s see. Numerous world polls showing how attitudes toward America have pretty much gone south all over the globe during the Bush administration (with a few exceptions — Albania and some places in Africa). Bush getting shoes thrown at him. Bush effigies being burned. Bush getting no cooperation from the U.N. when he wanted to invade Iraq and very little help from other countries (and the ones who did help have mostly bailed). And that’s just for starters.

Is Perino really sure she wants to play this game?

  33. TeleMan says:

“I actually think that we are respected in the world,” said Perino.

Respected? More like a feared playground bully with a club.

  34. Winski says:

Let’s see Dana…why not spend a little time reading something in the foreign press (ANY foreign press) OR better yet, get off your lazy backside, get on an airplane and go ask them! Wouldn’t take you very long to find out that Chimpy (and YOU by association) are some of the most despised people ON EARTH!

The “proof” is not very hard to find…IF you’re willing to spend five minutes just browsing….how lame is she…yikes…

  35. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Proof, like the thousands of people who were holding anti Bush demonstrations when Bush visited other countries while President?

  36. Xisithrus says:

  40. Purple State says:

Now hooooooold on there, Ms. Perino, Mr. O’Reilly:

I don’t think the Bush Administration left us with “virtually no respect”, so I’ll have to agree with Perino there, but I don’t believe that the loss in respect is entirely due to “swagger” from the Bush Administration. I believe part of the loss of respect is the general bad decisions made by the Bush Administration in their wars and the economic meltdown that affected other countries.

You won’t find “proof” of how respect has been lost, but doesn’t the fact that a high majority of the world approved of Obama over McCain during the election prove that there is much more respect for the Democratic Party than that of the Republican party?

How convenient of Perino to avert her eyes from proof she doesn’t want to see, only to have “proof” of the Bush Admistration’s safety records on hand. I think she must have accidentally looked into the Men-In-Black memory erasing flash on the Daily Show.

Because the world’s only superpower learned (the hard way) that it can’t change the world by “going it alone” like a cowboy in the ol’ West. The polls that have been taken across the world since 9/11 have indicated the lack of respect and confidence of the United States.

Once again this demonstrates that there will be no reconciliation between the right and the left in this country. Our nation will not be safe until the Republican party and their adherents are gathered up and sent to GITMO.

  86. WAYNEBRO says:

I’m so sick of that stupid “prove it” argument by the right wing. Perino is so stupid she didn’t know what the Cuban Missile Crisis was and now she’s claiming there’s no proof that Bush lowered our opinion internationally and alienated people overseas?

Well, just because O’reilly doesn’t know anything doesn’t mean there is no proof. There’s TONS.

First, there’s the fact that whenever Bush went ANYWHERE, he was greeted with throngs thousands and even tens of thousands strong of demonstrators shouting hate and condemnation to America and his administration.

In contrast, President Obama is being met with the same crowds, only their cheering, and throwing flowers instead of shoes.

There’s proof. And there’s plenty more where that came from.

Like all the polls, which all show proof that the Bush administration alienated the people of the world.

Like this poll, from the Pew Research Center’s “GLOBAL ATTITUDES PROJECT” which included more than 175,000 interviews in 55 countries.

And here’s what the results “proved”.

In 2000 83 percent of Britain’s held a favorable opinion of the US. That number steadily dropped under Bush each year. By 2006 that number was down to 56 percent. And that’s ENGLAND!

In 2000 62 percent of the French people had a favorable opinion of the US. Under the Bush rule that number declined steadily until by 2006 that number had dropped to a dismal 39 percent.

In 2000 78 percent of the German people had a favorable opinion of the US. That number dropped steadily until by 2006 that number dropped all the way down to 37 percent.

In 2000 50 percent of the people of Spain held a favorable opinion of the US. Under Bush rule that number steadily declined until by 2006, only a miserable 23 percent remained favorable.

And in 2000 52 percent of the people of Turkey held the US in a favorable light. But under the rule of Bush and the republicans, that number declined until by 2006, a mere 12 percent of the population still held that opinion.

    :|

    So there’s your proof Dana.

There’s your proof that Bush DID alienate the international community, and there’s plenty more where that came from.

See Dana, just because the right wing is stupid enough to listen to you and Bill Oreilly, doesn’t mean the rest of us are.

    THERE’S your “proof”.

    Now choke on it.

  90. Purple State says:

    Beautiful research, Waynebro.

  91. J. Fred Smug says:

I snorted up half a can of Diet Coke when I read that Dana P. went on BILLO THE INSANE CLOWN’S SHOW to pitch for GWB’s legacy tour.

Hey Dana, if you’re just going to preach to the choir, why bother?

P.S. Until January 20, 2009, I didn’t realize how much I loathed you. Thanks for leaving 1600 Pennsylvania. I mean it.

  92. teri3157 says:

Dana Perino is just another mean girl on Bush’s play ground, like Condi and Cheney’s old lady. Nobody will play with her anymore so she’s trying to kick dirt and start a fight.

    Dumb little bully…

  93. WAYNEBRO says:

    Want more “proof” Dana?

In 2007 a BBC World Service Poll conducted in 27 countries showed that respect for the US had dropped so low that even CHINA was significantly ahead of the US in world opinion.

In 2007 42 percent of the worlds population viewed China in a generally favorable light, as opposed to a mere 30 percent who viewed the US in a favorable light.

And the same poll shows that while only 32 percent of the world saw China in a negative light, a whopping 51 percent of the global population saw the US in a negative one!

So how’s THAT for “proof” Dana?

  94. noseeum says:

    (END VIDEO CLIP)
O’REILLY: All right. Joining us now from Washington to reply, the former spokesperson for President Obama, Dana Perino. So virtually no respect in parts of the world for the USA. Do you buy that?

    What?
Is this a TP typo or did O’Really actually say this?
    And no one caught it?

  95. diffrntdrummr says:

  97. fire _ant_chavis says:

Perino is a dingbat! This Byatch lives in outerspace. To make matters worse, Perino makes these insane claims on O’SillyHo the media whore’s show! Too trifling and foolish! We’ll get proof of how much Dumbya Bush is approved of around the world – let his a$$ board a plane and leave the country.

  98. LEGALIZEIT says:

Why doesn’t this mindless repug asshat have a show on fox? Seriously, she’s blond, she’s stupid, she’s utterly self-delusional=she’s perfect for fox!!!! One problem: Unlike the blond anchorwomen for fox, she doesn’t seem to be part cobra, part hyena, but i’m sure she could take some “faux-populist-anger” classes given by o’lielly or beck. Someone should tell ailes that Fox is missing out on some top-notch conservatard talent.

  99. Trittydi says:

Well – we’ve always known she’s dumb as a stump.

    Re-Thugs have their own reality.

Well, Perino ain’t manly enough to have a show on Fake News! LOL

  101. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Leave Dana alone, she is only auditioning for the hostess position at Bush’s liebrary:)

  102. LibertyLover says:

I’d say that of all of our 44 Presidents, no one except President Bush has had shoes thrown at him. Did you see that last summit that Bush was at? No one even wanted to acknowledge that he was there. Face it Perino, Bush was in a job that was WAY over his head.

  103. WAYNEBRO says:

  104. Robt says:

    WELL Dana,

Haven’t found one of those great paying career conservative jobs yet?

How about the Bush Administration alienating me. As an American, I am part of “around the world”. Try that for starters?

Then you can consider France with all the “Freedom Fries” “with us or against us” mental illness.

Start here Dana! Seek and you shall find…….

  105. Wang111 says:

    Perino makes me feel sick.

    Perino is disgusting.

Perino is like a loathsome disease.

Vincent Bugliosi (renowned former prosecutor) wrote a book indicating that George W. Bush murdered more than 4,000 U.S. service members and that Bush should be prosecuted for murder.

    Bush lied, and thousands died.

Bush lied and wrongfully caused the deaths of more than one million innocent Iraqi people.

Bush is widely thought of as the worst president ever.

Yet, Perino has the nerve to defend Bush.

Perino belongs in an insane asylum.
