Rep. Bachus: There are 17 socialists in the House.

bachus-pledge.gifWhile touring his district yesterday, Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL), the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, declared that 17 of his House colleagues “are socialists”, according to the Birmingham News:

But he said he is worried that he is being steered too far by the Congress: “Some of the men and women I work with in Congress are socialists.”

Asked to clarify his comments after the breakfast speech at the Trussville Civic Center, Bachus said 17 members of the U.S. House are socialists.

Roll Call reports, “An e-mail to Bachus’ spokesman about the names of those 17 Members was not returned.” Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) could ask Bachus if he would support her call for a McCarthy-like investigation into the “anti-American” views of her peers in Congress.

Why would she? Being socialist isnt being un-American. Americans have every right to be Socialists. A Socialist wrote the Pledge of Allegience

There is socialism for average/poor Americans and then there is socialism for wealthy Americans. Rep. Bachus and the GOP support only socialism for the latter.

  5. Marie says:

Of course repugs would do this. They are dredging everything in history from WWII forward and twisting it to suit their purposes; why not dredge up the anti-red scare from the 1950’s, the blacklists of Hollywood, and join the infamous ranks of Joe McCarthy and Martin Dies.

It’s just that they can’t make up their minds if Democrats are socialists, fascists, or Marxists.

WHat a pathetic bunch of losers, who now have a poster boy in Bachus.

  6. misscoleopteramolly says:

Considering that the word “socialist” is defined by some right-wingers as anybody who supports raising taxes on the rich, anybody who supports Social Security or Medicare, anybody who supports health care reform, anybody who supports President Obama’s stimulus package and budget, etc., I’m surprised there are only 17 “socialists” in the HOR.

For all the wingnut sheeple who plan to have their teabagging parties next week to protest taxation — which is actually misplaced, because the Boston Tea Party was to protest taxation without representation — and furthermore, those who are protesting are working people; the very ones Obama is planning to help with his tax cuts for them and his 3% increase on the wealthy of America — I want to know if any of them are aware of the slang meaning of teabagging?
It’s getting to be hilarious to watch the rightwingers on Fox go crazy over this.

  20. paleolib says:

While they are at it, perhaps Roll Call could ask if Rep. Bachus can count to 17.

Then they can ask if Rep. Bachus opposes socialist programs such as Medicare, Social Security and unemployment compensation (well, we know he opposes that last one because Republicans know that it’s your fault if you lost your job unless your name is Norm Coleman or Ted Stevens).

  21. Hawkeye says:

Well there are a lot more Fascists in the Republican caucus but I guess that doesn’t bother Bachus. Probably because he’s on that list too.

    ____________________________________________________________

I don’t agree that we’re losing. It’s because we’re winning that the wingnuts are having to scrape the bottom of their toolbox, and all they can come up with are loony labeling tactics, absurd conspiracy theories, and ludicrous accusations.

However, your point is well taken that we can’t just sit by and allow this. McCarthyism destroyed careers and lives, robbed Americans of freedoms, and put Americans in the position of having to answer questions (in the words of Pete Seeger) “no American should have to answer.”

We need not only to let our elected officials know exactly what we think of these tactics (even though they reek of desperation), we need to remind our society what the McCarthy days were like — especially since there are a couple of generations out there who weren’t alive then. We need to bring back movies like “Storm Center” (1956) that showed the negative effects of fearmongering.

We have one Congressman who has organized Republican aides to smear new Dems in Congress by videotaping them while being ambushed with off-topic, irrelevant strawman questions and then posts them on youtube (nice use of taxpayer money Mr. Cantor)
Then we have a Republican nutjob from Texas (is there any other kind of TX Rep?) requesting that asian Americans change their names to something a bit more English-sounding so she can pronounce their names.
Now we have the looney Mr. Bachus making lists and not naming names over a tinhat conspiracy theory.

This is how they spend their taxpayer funded days in DC rather than attempting to solve the problems facing American citizens? Maybe the teabaggers have misdirected their anger to the wrong side of the aisle when they complain about waisted dollars and a lack of action in fixing the myriad problems caused by the Republican Party. Talk about taxation without representation, elected Republican officials have not spent one ounce of effort on solutions and every ounce of their energy is focussed on grinding progress to a halt an sabotaging the President’s efforts and the will of an overwhelming majority of the citizens. If they’re not in DC playing childish games on the people’s dime they are clogging the media airwaves (with the “librul media’s” assistance) waisting more of the people’s money and time rehashing the same failed policies and degrading a President who has record approval.

    Think reality, not ideology
    By H.D.S. Greenway | November 5, 2004

    CONGRATULATIONS, Mr. President.

I would hope, now that you no longer have to face an electorate ever again, that your second term might be based a bit more on reality than ideology. One of your senior advisers told writer Ron Suskind that people such as Suskind were “what we call the reality-based community . . . [people who] believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.” That, according to your adviser, was old hat. “We’re an empire now,” he said, “and when we act, we create our own reality. We’re history’s actor’s, and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

I have no problem with Obama using signing statements for their traditional purpose – to point out where a law passed by Congress may violate the Constitution. Presidents since Jefferson have done this.

It is a very slimy tactic the Republicans use, in the past to great success, and that is to label their opponents with a term that they can load with all sorts of negative connotations. For instance, they used to call Democrats “Liberals”, this meant to be a tree hugging, weak kneed (pretend to be intellectual), snob, who would not fight for his country, (embarassing drug using fools), who do not have the slightest knowledge of how to protect and defend this country and who couldn’t earn a dime on their own and therefore expects the country to provide welfare for them to suck off the tit of the true producers (the wealthy, who are already over taxed, especially by the dreaded DEATH TAX).
We “liberals” on the other hand, retreated, not wanting to be tagged by such a derogatory term. But we are not “liberals” as they have defined it and that’s the problem. That’s the way they defeated our much superior candidates in the past.
Today, I don’t see “liberal” as the stigma it was only a few years ago. I believe this is because they, The Republicans and Wingnuts have lost their credibility and most of the American people see through that type of demonizing. So the Republicans, instead of seeing their tactics are no longer efective, just go along and try to find another term, searching through their minimal minds and coming up with McCarthyite terms such as “Socialist”, “Marxist”, and “Commie”. Come on now, is that the best they can do, name-call? That’s why they have failed so decisively to govern effectively. They really have no competent basis on which to govern. They are the party of POWER, and, I hate to get into the same terminology definition, but really, they are the closest party to a fascist party we have seen in this country.
I must tell them: Keep it up. You sound just like the squealing pigs you are. I’ve never seen anything so disgusting in political discourse since Joe McCarthy. Republicans have nothing of substance to offer and they seem intent on proving it. Keep up the good work.

No court cases can proceed on either extraordinary rendition or torture and this morning we learn that even operatives who are responsible for torturing people to death after holding them for years without charges can not be investigated .

  92. Hoodathunktick says:

Is there a natural gas leak on the Right side of the floor in the House that no one has detected????!!!!

They’ve detected it but even the Republicans have a right to speak.

  93. JoeBridgeman says:

ohhhhh, is jesus on the list? he should be.

  94. Buckie Boy says:

    Armed Forces = Socialism
    Police Forces = Socialism
    Fire Departments = Socialism
    Social Security = Socialism
    Transportation Department = Socialism
    Medicade = Socialism

So just what part of Socialism do scum sucking Repukes have a problem with?

    Fcuk the Republicans

  95. Hoodathunktick says:

this article from the socialists seems to think Obama is not using the signing statement “traditionally” .
    Is he ?

  97. nanlichi nasschagii says:

Socialist is intended to be the slur of the week I guess. NPR aired an interview with a gun dealer from Texas (I know, it’s hard to believe) and when asked why people are buying up guns his answer was to protect themselves from the Socialists. Dumbfck.

How many of these idiots will be at the d*uchebag party next Wednesday?

  98. JMOHR says:

Buckie Boy, Candide and the others who want to equate government programs to Socialism:

I respect where you are coming from. However, you are wrong. You are doing the work of the Republicans and right wing.

None of the programs that you have described are Socialistic. I am not going to argue whether Socialism is good or bad. It is sufficient to understand that the Republicans are purposefully misrepresenting these programs. Please do not make it harder for us to achieve our goals.

  99. ralph the wonder locust says:

JMOHR, if I can interject, I suspect that when Buckie Boy describes police services and highways are “socialist” he’s leaning on the right-wing’s hysterical standard of the term (i e., any tax increase above current rates, by the look of it) in order to demonstrate how, under that standard, pretty much anything the government touches could be construed as “socialism”.

  100. Doc Rock says:

  101. tombaker says:

Giving away the Western States’ real estate to railroaders, timber interests, miners, ranchers, and farmers in the 1880’s was sure as hell Socialism, thus making Socialism an integral part of our National Heritage.

The USA was built on Socialism, and Socialism has saved us from going broke and falling apart twice since Westward Expansion was complete.

Hows the restoration of posse comitatus going ?

  104. ralph the wonder locust says:

Apparently, freeman is unclear on the concept of the daily “ThinkFast” thread.

  105. loris says:

If Baccus has a list of 17 socialist, can the Democrats say they have a list of 200 scared, crazy, racist, terrorist Republicans in the house and senate combined? The Republicans have gone completly off the deep end, and the press is treating them like their behaivor is normal. This is not normal and and they need to be called on it. The American press is the most useless press in the world. It is down right shameful!

  106. freeman says:

There’s alot I’m unclear on ralph ….. Ever read the apology by Plato ?

I see the chicken little fear factor sector of congress is STILL using the same M.O.

  108. dzinn1264 says:

The best way to deal with these Republican stunts – because that is what they are – is to ignore them – give them no aire time. But the mews media needs controversy to function, so idiots like Bachus get to stand on their soap box and spread their vile propoganda.

  109. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    freeman,
Change only counts when it’s nameplates and underwear…
… Besides, even a two-bit coin has two sides. Turning it over to expose the polished side does not change it’s value. Yet many people are struck at the increased value a new shiny side adds.

  110. Xisithrus says:

The republicans have always been big business leg humpers and its why the media allows them to rant and rave against socialism even though alot of businesses are subsidized from big oil to farmers to the MIC to Wallstreet..

Its okay when fat cats [hoi oligoi] get a bailout for their too big too fail schemes but not the masses [hoi polloi]

  111. smidget says:

    @Reality Check 45.

That’s strange, considering it’s not what the actual data says.

He’s holding remarkably steady, following the time period immediately leading up to and following the inaugeration. Where are you getting your information, because no one else seems to agree with you.

    Here’s Bush’s historical approval ratings:
    http://www.hist.umn.edu/~ruggles/Approval.htm

Hmm. For this time period, they are pretty damn close to Obama’s.

Here’s a hint for understanding the charts:
If you pull your head out of your ass, you may have an easier time reading them.

  112. Zooey Lepidoptera says:

    smidget,

I can assure you, though, I did not vote for either of these @ssholes.

  118. TeleMan says:

I said it before and I will say it again–Republicans are NOT capable of governing in a TWOparty system.

I don’t remember which poster originally said this but (paraphrasing):

Republicans don’t want to govern; they want to rule.

  119. Yankeluh says:

This guy wouldn’t know a socialist even if it bit him on the ass.

  120. aljr1947 says:

Big deal Bachus. Everyone in my house is a Socialist. Everyone who collects Social Security is a Socialist. Everyone who purchases any form of insurance is a Socialist. They are everywhere. Run away, run away.

  121. Libellula saturata Annie says:

Poor Rep. Bachus has a socialist under his bed…

    *eyeroll*

I’d suggest a ’scrip for Xanax.

  122. dbadass says:

socialists in the house! Give it up for the socialists in the house! Can I hear a woot…

  123. MapleStreet says:

Wasn’t there, like, an FBI director who liked to dress up in women’s clothing. But also go on the news and say vague things about how he had irrefutable proof that there were commies in the government. And also make pronouncements against people he didn’t like, like saying he had irrefutable proof that MLK was a Marxist ?

  124. Tachinidae Leporello says:

Jeebus! Socialists in the House! Good Lord, the Red China’s still in the dish washer! Oh, the Humanity!

  125. Xisithrus says:

Bachus is a socialist…for the financial elite.

  127. The Moderate Squad says:

The Reich likes to imagine that Reagan ended the Cold War, but still wants us to be frightened of commies? The people who turned a budget surplus into a huge deficit want to lecture us on capitalism? And – let me just get this straight – the same people who’s policies have led to the highest rate of unemployment in more than half a century want us to get on board for tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent?

No wonder the GOPinheaads want to abolish the Dept. of Education – stupid people are so easy to fool.

  128. flight says:

I find it hard to imagine that this is the same party that governed the country for 8 years. They are throwing the kitchen sinks into this. 17 Socialists in the house, the government is overrun with the vermin. The only vermin I see right now are a bunch of stupid fascists calling themselves the Republican Party. Let’s see how many run out and join their buffoonery cause.

  129. MapleStreet says:

According to the good Texas repub, Bachus needs to change his name. Wasn’t Bachus a Greek or Roman god of drunken orgies ? And how many Americans can handle the gutteral CH sound ?

  130. turkeyfish says:

    I agree with JMOHR.

We need to call out the republicans for advocating the undermining of the US military simply because it is a socialist institution.

Its outrageous that Rep Bachus is advocating that Alabama based defense contractors should receive priority treatment over better pay, veterans benefits, and more support for the critical military tools our forces need on the battlefield, , simply because he wants to further impose his brand of corporate capitalism on our military in exchange for campaign contributions.

Bachus should resign in shame! He’s another republican Cunningham clone.

  131. nleath says:

    Sound familiar?

Bacchus – The Roman god of wine and intoxication, equated with the Greek Dionysus. His festival was celebrated on March 16 and 17. The Bacchanalia, orgies in honor of Dionysus, were introduced in Rome around 200 BCE. These infamous celebrations, notorious for their sexual and criminal character, got so out of hand that they were forbidden by the Roman Senate in 186 BCE. Bacchus is also identified with the old-Italian god Liber.
