VIDEO: Fox News Signs On To Tea Party Agenda, Aggressively Promotes Anti-Obama Protests

Organizers of the radical anti-Obama “tea party” protests have been trying to claim that the events are rising up spontaneously. Many of these organizers, such as Eric Odom, are claiming that the tea parties are being held by “regular American[s] in protest of government spending and extreme taxation.”

However, as Media Matters recently documented, Fox News has been aggressively promoting the anti-tax protests:

Specifically, Fox News has in dozens of instances provided attendance and organizing information for future protests, such as protest dates, locations and website URLs. Fox News websites have also posted information and publicity material for protests. Fox News hosts have repeatedly encouraged viewers to join them at several April 15 protests that they are attending and covering.

The network has also been pushing the movement’s talking points, saying that people are “angry,” “upset,” and “feeling disenfranchised,” which is why they’re organizing this “nationwide grassroots movement.” Promising “fair and balanced” coverage, hosts such as Glenn Beck, Neil Cavuto, and Sean Hannity are all planning to broadcast live from the events. The Fox broadcasts are in turn being used by the tea party organizers to promote their protests.

Think Progress has put together a video illustrating Fox News’s active role in promoting the “FNC Tax Day Tea Parties.” Watch it:

Fox News isn’t the only right-wing organization involved in building up these so-called “grassroots” events. The tea parties have been heavily backed by corporate lobbyists. The principle organizers of many of the local events are actually the lobbyist-run think tanks Americans for Prosperity, Freedom Works, and Newt Gingrich’s American Solutions. The groups are heavily staffed and well funded, and are providing all the logistical and public relations work necessary for planning coast-to-coast protests.

With its aggressive advocacy for the anti-Obama protests, it looks like Fox is quickly dropping its “fair and balanced” slogan to become the “voice of opposition” to the Obama administration.

Update Andrew Sullivan has more here on the symbiosis between the protests and Fox News.

shouldn’t that be “er” and not “or”?

  3. wags camponotus saundersi says:

And to think, all it took was letting a 3% tax cut on the wealthiest segment of society expire to send these yokels into a tailspin.

I seem to not remember them acting this way when Reagan raised taxes…

  4. Megaloptera McWars says:

The tea party maggots, far and few between, are the couch potatoes while the breadwinner in President Obama heads off to work everyday. The couch potatoes complain that President Obama isn’t working hard enough to pay off the debt they ran up with all their free time.

    I hope that’s at least a quasi-decent metaphor.

  5. diffrntdrummr says:

Shouldn’t the FCC be looking into this?? I mean between that loon Beck and this crap, they have to be violating their charter re; “The public good”.Or as Charlton Heston would say, It’s a madhouse!!

Did anyone expect anything different from the republican propaganda machine? I’d be surprised if the bully brigade wasn’t broadcasting live.

  8. Megaloptera McWars says:

Good point, wags. They’ve been led to believe all those tax increases were brought about by dems. They’ve been told to ignore factoids such as Reagan raising regressive taxes on the poor- and middle-class to compensate for irresponsible tax cuts for the rich.

  9. pastcaring ceratopogonidae says:

If these tea bagging ceremonies are as well attended as the Republican National Convention, I doubt we’ll have anything to worry about.

  12. Bob says:

Will the protesters be dressed as Indians too?

I’m really surprised that these people are so bent out of shape about the tax on tea.

  13. Tachinidae Leporello says:

These will be the finest, best organized and choreographed spontaneous demonstrations Ever! The writers have been hashing and re-hashing the impromptu speeches and the stunt doubles are ready for the action scenes! Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up!

  14. Ape-Man says:

Who does the FCC work for? What is their function? Why do they not apply to cable MSM?

  15. Gregor Samsa says:

After 8 years of pork-laden budgets, 2 disastrous invasions, and an out-of-control deficit, these twits are outraged by the current administration’s spending?

Things are really different in right-wing bizarro world…

  16. Megaloptera McWars says:

Thanks, nanlichi! This isn’t making a dent because, as Jon Stewart noted, they are confusing tyranny with losing.

  17. MrWombat says:

What a laughable concept they are teabagging themselves out of relevance.

  18. Brian Crooks says:

Two thoughts about the Tea Party “movement.” First and foremost, if MSNBC or any other outlet was telling its viewers to attend a Code Pink rally or to join MoveOn.org, that would have been an outrage (and rightfully so). Why Fox “News” thinks it’s acceptable for its anchors to actively promote a political movement and then claim that the rest of the media is too liberal completely eludes me.

The second concern I have is this: we may witness, on April 15, a violent riot erupt on the streets of major American cities. And the whole thing will be broadcast on Fox “News” with Cavuto, Hannity, VanSustren and Beck either caught in the crossfire or leading the charge. Have they given any thought to the potential for violence and mayhem? I mean, these Tea Parties are promoted by the NRA, neo-nazi groups, and far-right militias. You put those three things together, add a messianic figure like Glenn Beck, plus TV cameras, and that is a very, VERY volatile mix.

    Woodstock.

That was a grassroots movement all its own, three days of peace and music in 1969. I was thrilled by the stories my dad told me about it, since he attended one of the nearby concerts that year around the time it was going down.

It was improvisational and intended for profit, but became free when the crowd proved to be too big.

Now, remember Woodstock ‘94? When I look at what it became, I still see the original intent there, but I also see it clouded by people who looked to profit from it. MTV covered it, and companies tried to slap their own logo on the event. Because of that, I felt a little sicker, knowing that its original nostalgia had been corrupted by sponsorship.

This is what Fox is doing to protests. While the improvisation may still be there, this is not a “grassroots movement”. This is a “corporate-sponsored movement” that Fox has now branded with their own name.

While I am prepared to let these people honor their right to a free voice, I still feel that sickness I felt back in 1994. This time, the Pepsi brand has been replaced with “FNC”.

Actually I am in favor of the Fair Tax. If you would like to discuss I would be happy to. It will drastically reduce the size and power of the IRS, if not alleviate it all together. It takes power away from the bureaucrats and puts it back into he hands of the people. It gets rid of all tax loopholes and makes sure that everyone pays their fair share. Including those that earn their money illegally. Gee, why would anyone want any of that??

And where is the weak-willed limp cable news and MSM? They should be calling out FOX NEWS for manipulating and demeaning “news coverage”. Fox News is MAKING the news here, not covering it.

Closing loopholes and reforming the tax code, however, are worthy causes.

If you would take an honest look at it I believe that you would agree that it is the Fairest Form of Taxation that is in the marketplace of Ideas today.

What is wrong with drastically reducing the size and power of the IRS, if not alleviating it all together. Taking the power away from the bureaucrats and putting it back into he hands of the people. Getting rid of all tax loopholes and making sure that everyone pays their fair share. Including those that earn their money illegally. Gee, why would anyone want any of that??

Are the “patriots” of the Reichwing doing all they can to get out economy back on track? Are they working with the new President to fix the damage their guy caused? Are they even engaging in good faith negotiations?

No. They are getting together with their drinking buddies to protest tax increases that have yet to be enacted and won’t affect them anyway. They are going to protest spending that will make our country a healthier, safer, more prosperous, and a better maintained nation. And all because they are unable or unwilling to change things that aren’t working.

The cowardly creeps make me sick. While they bluster about telling the world they can kick its ass, they start every other sentence with “I’m afraid”. I don’t care about the size and power of the IRS, as long as that power is efficiently channeled. Watering down corporate audits, failing to root out tax shelters at an acceptable rate and going after poorer and middle class taxpayers with a vengeance, that is not an efficient use of power, and yet, conservatives are ok with that. If you are wealthy, you can afford the tax code w/o a reduction in your standard of living, and that’s why it makes sense to have to deal with the more complex code. And that’s why it makes sense for the IRS to come down on people who get wealthy in this country and want to evade the public interest of giving back.

Conservatives hate the sight of IRS agents walking onto a well-manicured compound for a lifestyle audit on the occupant who only reported $25,000 in income using a bunch of accounting tricks.

Yes, I do know that it would take a 30% sales tax to keep the government operating efficiently, certainly a higher rate than advertised, and you would have to account for the reduction in purchasing power for lower income people. I’m not quick to buy into the “prebate” either. This proposal, once you’ve read up on the analyzing data, is clearly pie-in-the-sky.

    1. The potential donation is sent with all required info. including a valid Social security number to the IRS-(Internal Revenue Service) for a review and verification, that includes a review to make sure the donor and social security number referenced is still alive and in good standing, and that they are paying their taxes too.
    2. After the IRS review- the donation is then sent onto the FBI-CIA (Federal Bureau of Investigation-Central Intelligence Agency): for their review to determine the contributor, is a active valid citizen and not in jail, and not on a terror listing, etc.

The way I understand it, the ‘fair tax’ doesn’t do away with the IRS, it just renames it. (I don’t have an opinion on the IRS either way)

The tax rate will be 23% in addition to the state and local taxes already being paid by consumers (including on each gallon of gas).

There are no checks on Congress raising the rate as they see necessary in the future.

It was submitted by a Republican and I don’t trust it on General Principles for that reason alone.

    April 10th, 2009 at 5:41 pm Recommend (0) | Report Abuse

I believe your way of presenting government power is much too dreary and abstract. Paying taxes in general is a good thing, but we also have a responsibility to monitor how our government uses that money to our benefit, i.e. biggest bang for the buck.

The real bureaucrats on a national level have outsourced government work to companies with shoddy records, and the tab has been far more expensive than simply hiring federal employees who will bring their salaries back to their communities.

Take $1 trillion in unaccounted spending at the pentagon.

The same senators who hate funds going toward social spending that pays for itself are the ones recently complaining about Secretary Gates’ budget proposal reforming military contracting. The fiscal restraints they supposedly champion should not be applied to weapons systems we don’t need, or need more of. Those are their views. Next to that, after you buy the systems, you have to maintain them, which is a further drain on the taxpayer. They don’t care if the weapons spending actually plays a part in defending the country, as long as the military contractors keep their profits.

That’s not how I want my money spent, yet the biggest bureaucrats in the world aren’t Chicago-style dems, they are the southern Republicans who send a disproportionate of tax dollars to the pentagon even if they’re actually just throwing money at the problem.

A flat tax is wrong in concept. The wealthy GET more out of societies investment on everyones ability to make money and OUGHT to pay a higher percentage. It is raping the poor and working class to give more to those who already have much and take from those who have the least and those who work hardest which ISNT the rich but the working class. The big problem with libertarian philosophy in general is it is niave. It THINKS that what power you take from the government will naturally flow to the people in general and that is just silly. When power is available it will be competed for and those who already have the most will get it, that is corporations and Wealth. The ONLY entity that can stand up to corporations and STOP them from exploiting their workforce, consumers and the environment is the government which is at least somewhat responsive to the people because of elections. Corporations are fascist entities by design and they are NOT responsive to the needs of the people in general they are responsive ONLY to the needs of maximizing profits The libertarian ideal would lead to more Pintos, Love Canals and MORE superfund cleanups where the CORPORATIONS pass THEIR costs onto the taxpayer in order to maximize THEIR profits

If YOU cant realize you are a moron and that barfly was RIGHT then what can I say other than feel free to wallow in your stupidity. The housing crisis was brought on by a lot more than irresponsible buyers. I could go into it AGAIN but it has been done at least a hundred times. Take your head out of your ASS as that is where your posts imply it is currently located and try to learn something useful. For instance Ebenezer Scrooge? He wasnt supposed to be a role model

  156. Mathazar says:

So let me get this straight .

These T-bagers, and faux were fine with W squandering a TRILLION dollars on a made up war.

They were also fine with the military completely losing 12 BILLION $ in cash in Iraq.

They don’t mind that the cost for taking care of the disabled vets will be another TRILLION $

They were A-OKAY with Bush bailouts totaling another 700 BILLION $, to avert a disaster that his party was reponsible for.

But when Obama tries to pull the economy out of the doldrums by using tax dollars to create jobs, and repair infrastructure
    Faux suddenly becomes outraged.

They’ve truly become the bizzaro network.

  157. The New Patriot says:

    Eugene

You show you intelligence by your name calling. A reply by myself would only institute further ignorant remarks from an ignoramus.

  158. Megaloptera McWars says:

Ah, the “tort reform” talking point. Protect people who screw up, and therefore it’ll be a little bit cheaper for more people to get screwed.

  159. The New Patriot says:

Tort reform yes. Their are reasonable damages to a claim. Sometimes no matter what a person tries to help another is enough and not their fault. There are instances of real neglect which isn’t resolved by excessive damages, for this won’t bring back the patient.

    Have you looked lately?
Doctors are quitting their practice because of unrealistic expectations of patients. We will be losing some bad doctors ( I hope) but also some very good ones also.

Government ignores all the costs of health care in order to make it easier to push the agenda of a national healthcare system. These systems fail in every country they are in. Thats why they come to America for treatment.

  160. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

    The New Patriot Says:

Another punkass troll with his WWWWWWAAAAAHHHHHHh how DARE you treat me the way I treat you. WWWAAAHHHHHHH only us conservative MORONS get to make personal attacks. Did you or did you NOT post these things?

I feel sorry for your lack of knowledge.

Don’t beat up on me, get out of the bars (as your named implies)

Maybe you will grow up to UNDERSTAND

Why YES YOU DID. NOW you want to snivel like the punk you are about namecalling? Cowboy up punk. You dont like mud thrown at you but you sure like to throw it yourself. This is such a common tactic of the REALLY brainwashed morons. I think it comes because the Rush Limbaugh screechmonkeys of the world do your thinking for you. You are clearly dumb as a post so when you hear THEM call people names and then whine that all liberals do is call names you naturally think, I appolgize to the term think for suggesting a moron like you is capable of the funtion, that YOU should be given the same privelege. Call us names then go into a deafening WWWWWWAAAAAHHHHHH that we dont just lie down and take it

So we have established you are a moron. That you only care about yourself and think YOUR selfishness is something others need to LEARN. Are you an infant or are you really this stupid?

  161. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

Well, at least this whole silliness inspired me to start writing parodies again. Please enjoy Tea Bag Party. Thank you.

  162. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

You should call yourself the new propganda parrot. You sure know the rightwing talking points you have been brainwashed with. Reality however you dont even have a passing aquaitence with. You are so quick to protect and appologize for power like you have been programmed to do. If a corporation screws up you think we should limit ITS liability for the good of all though REALLY its benifit is to corporations and power itself. If THEY kill your entire family as pretty much happened to my Uncle who lost two of his three sons and had the third permanantly disabled well he should only be able to make them pay a pittance. what a weasel you are.

You are a liar when you say Nationalized healthcare has failed everywhere it is tried. We spend MORE per capita on healthcare than any country in the world and yet we are 37th in healthcare rankings most of those nationalized healthcare countries YOU say have failed far surpass us on that scale. Then again you dont even KNOW what you think until the screechmonkey you tune into to do your thinking for you TELLS you to think it YET you have the gall to tell US to learn and understand. What a putz

  163. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

Very good Wayne. Shared it with my wife she laughed too.

  164. The New Patriot says:

    Eugene

You might have noticed that i didn’t initate any name calling. I only defended my position when attacked.

I have noticed that you are an avid antagonist in your earlier posts to other participants.

Let me ask you a few questions.

    Do you have a job?
Have you ever paid any taxes?

Maybe answers to these questions might enlighten us to your assine attitude. Maybe you are sucking off of the tax payers tit.

You just might want to use this money to rent a big screen tv, furniture and just maybe some appliances. Or you might make a buy for some Pot or Cocaine.

But do it on your dollar a not mine.

I think i feel good that I pissed you off tonight and will be laughing at your aggrevation

  165. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

Thanks, Eugene. It’s also good to leave a comment there, so my ego can smile when I look at it later. :)

Seriously, though, thanks for the compliment. And have a good weekend.

  166. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

    The New Patriot Says:

You are a liar. You were rude to Barfly it is that simple. You are stupid and you are brainwashed. You KNOW you are too stupid to think for yourself so you repeat this cliched moronity that Rush TOLD you to believe. You dont even KNOW what you beleive until Rush tells you. I probably put out more in TIPS than you pay in taxes moron. This is so old accusing us of not having jobs. Like it is some huge accomplishment I guess for people as stupid as you it probably seems like it is. You are clearly enough of a moron to THINK you can read my mind as tell if I am angry. That is your level of stupid. I have no emotional investment here. I amuse myself by slapping the stupid out of ignorant trolls like you. I just LOVE laughing at people as stupid as you. It makes my day.

  167. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

The New PropagandaParrot wouldnt know an original thought from a migrane headache. What a putz. He even steals his insults from Rush. He is of the Limborg hivemind

Absolutly. Pure unadulterated bullshit. No rational being could look at the facts and come up with this statement. It is just more evidence that this one is of the Limborg. He tunes into the radio to have his thinking done for him

  172. Eugene atrax robustus Debs says:

Did you think you were special Propaganda Parrot? We get morons like you here almost every day. You have listened to Rush or whatever screechmonkey does your thinking for you and it has made you THINK you are smart and you are going to come in here all condescending and show us your borrowed wisdeom. Except a couple of problems arise. First you are stupid and the liberals here are pretty smart people. Second you dont know WHY you beleive what you do other than it is what you were TOLD to believe so you cant really argue your points, just repeat them in a kind of sad demented myna bird way. So when we ANSWER your points and show you why we think you are wrong you cant answer until Rush tells you HOW. What a sad and pathetic existance you have.

  173. Megaloptera McWars says:

    Hello Eugene’s wife!

  176. turkeyfish says:

Its outrageous that Ruppert Murdoch is using his Chinese business connections to provide tea grown by Chinese prisoners for these tea parties. These tea parties are are little more than an effort by Murdoch media empire to exploit their Chinese connections to exchange media publicity for his efforts to obtain further tax breaks.

Yes they are and you OUGHT to be terrified. As bad as you were SPANKED the last two elections you will do well not to go the way of the WHIG party. There are still people stupid enough to vote Republican but if you keep being as ignorant as you have been the GOP caucus will start meeting in phonebooths

You DO realize all this nonsense coming out of the GOP and Fox Noise will do NOTHING but cause further damage during the 2010 midterms don’t you?

The only people applauding are the dwinding regional extreme elements of the base. The GOP is NEVER going to win elections by continuing to pander to them.

  184. outofthebox says:

I see hate comments on tea parties, why? I don’t vote democrat or republican for neither party has impressed me as totally truthful or honest. I do notice comments here from apparently one side, the democrats, why? Can’t real citizens stand up for what they believe in and voice their opinion without it being a conspiracy, maybe practice a little of our first amendment rights. Oh one other thing i’m not taking political sides. Why because a Republican President and his cronies pushed the first bits of “bail out” monies and a Democrat President and majority led Democratic Senate and their cronies signed it in. So neither side truly believes in the thought of “WE THE PEOPLE” and thats the real problem, thats the real issue, thats the real fight so pull yourself away from what ever it is keeping you from seeing the big picture and THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX and think for yourself. And if you don’t like what one group is doing fine, form your own tea party and get the message out IT’S YOUR RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  185. terry nash says:

You people truly amaze me with your hatred of real patriots. You’re the fools that want to placate all of the idiots resting on their backside waiting for Obama, their savior to apply a band-aid to their hemmorhoids. You are communist fools, lackeys helping to ruin this great land. Obama and his like are scurvy liars with nor morals, no character, their life contains no truth, always twisting circumstances to fit their crappy ideals. Anyone that thinks the government will save them is an absolute, bankrupt fool.

  186. terry nash says:

By the way small minded progressives, don’t bother with the faggy race card. Obama is not liked because of his brainless big government agenga, not because of any flaky thing like skin color. You stooges always twist everything when someone disagrees with you.. The only change this alien resident brought was an huge increase of the same old trash. You idiots deserve all the government handouts you can get, waiting on the mailman to bring your self esteem to you. Get real, be responsible for yourself for a change. Have a happy day mindless idiots, I’m off to the tea party to speak out against the gestapo government that we have.

  187. RomanKorvinus says:

First off the Tea party people are right to protest, for one, the main reason we revolted against the British was because of the taxes, thus in turn the US Constitution. Now here we are living in the US and are forced to accept the very same behavior we fought against when we fought the British and created the Constitution. Our government has become hypocritical at best.
Second, billions of dollars have been spent to bail out the banks. Did the government act in our, the people’s best interest? Of course not. If they ahd they would have created a department that forced the banks to act on behalf of their parton and requested a letter of appeal and letter of proposal so that the money given to the banks would have whipped the debt of the patron away, mainly school and small business loans. But what did our government do, they just gave them the money and screwed the people who gave it to them.
As for all those politicians and their veiw on why the protests are wrong, they should remember, we never wanted you in the first place.

  188. RomanKorvinus says:

And one more thing, when are we going to place a A-F grade scale on housing. Basically like the resturants. A for the very nice rental properties and F for the not so good but still livable conditions anything less then this should be considered slum lord conditions and they should have 90 days to bring it to code or the state confiscates it and offers a new building in place of the old one, yet the whole while the former tenants would have first choice at the same rental price as the former appartment or house, price gouging should not be tolerable. Personally I think that the lowest rental sales in the US should determine our scale, afterall we are all dealing with something called minumum wage, ever heard of it??? It’s little things like this that let me know our government acts against us. At least now when this comes to be you’ll know it’s wasn’t some stupid political advisor that sujested it.

  189. guzide says:

  190. corvid_left says:

Lots of us who voted for W became more and more upset and horrified as the Republican-controlled Congress and W himself spent the taxpayers’ dollars as if they were drunken sailors on liberty (no offense to the Navy for that stereotype). We had a hand in the turnover to a Democrat-controlled Congress in order to send the GOP a message. We voted for “change” in 2006, hoping the Dems would get that message, too, but they seemed to take it as a mandate for the Democratic Party platform. Personally, I left the GOP and registered Independent. I did not vote for Obama in 2008, not because he was black, but because I believe he is too liberal. I wasn’t happy that John McCain was the GOP candidate, either, and felt that I had no horse in the race. On election night, I had tears in my eyes as I watched blacks all over the country celebrate and I was moved, tremendously moved that we finally had a black president. What a point in history!

Subsequently, I did not listen to right-wing talk radio, as I did not want to hear attacks on the new president and I wanted to give him a chance to get his administration and policies going. Sadly, I am not thrilled at the billions (trillions?) of dollars our descendants are going to have to repay. This started with Bush’s administration and is just getting worse with Obama’s, I’m afraid.

That is why I participated in preparation meetings for the Colorado Springs tea party and attended it. I’ll admit I did not see many black people there, which saddened me. We did have a black speaker (D. Ed Jones), among many others. There were no riots in the streets, just honking horns from drivers who agreed with us. Before these tea parties, many of us felt we were not being heard or that our voices were being ignored. Now we’ve found people who believe similarly to each other and we feel that we are actually doing something, not just blogging on right-wing or independent websites.

I’m not against Obama because of his color; it’s because of his policies so far.
