Throughout the presidential campaign, Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) top economic adviser and former CBO director, Douglas Holtz Eakin, argued passionately for McCain’s proposal to extend the Bush tax cuts (and cut some more taxes for the wealthy on top of it). Holtz-Eakin, however, has now come out against making the tax cuts permanent, acknowledging that it would explode the deficit:
Though economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin spent the 2008 presidential campaign advising Sen. John McCain to defend the Bush-era tax cuts, he now thinks they should be allowed to expire on Dec. 31, 2010 due to “the prospect of an Argentina-style fiscal meltdown.” Said Holtz-Eakin: “If you ask: ‘Who pays the taxes?’, it’s the first step toward not having the answer be: ‘Our kids.’”
Recall, McCain also flip-flopped on the Bush tax cuts, but he opposed the cuts in 2001 and argued for them in 2008.

Reality strikes members of McCainistan.

April 10th, 2009 at 12:43 pmIts nice to see that someone has finally read the “Shock Doctrine” or a history book for that matter…
April 10th, 2009 at 12:47 pmI’d never trust an Economist who can’t decide whether to shave or grow a beard. The “Sonny Crockett” look was over a while ago, Doug – push your jacket sleeves back down, spiff up that resume, and get a real job somewhere, K, babe?
April 10th, 2009 at 12:48 pmHe will surely have the wrath of Rush upon him shortly and he will apologize.
April 10th, 2009 at 12:48 pmBurger King flips less things than McCain
April 10th, 2009 at 12:49 pm…Holtz-Eakin’s “flip flop” similar to that of his former boss. Recall, McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and argued for them in 2008.
You mean Holtz-Eakin is reversing a reversal? I’m sure that McCain would like to reverse his verersal as well, but the Republcan establishiment would be outraged and he would be forced to reverse this reveral of his first reversal to keep from being called a “flip-flopper.”
Who says the Republican ideas in disarry?
April 10th, 2009 at 12:50 pmHoltz-Eakin’s “flip flop” similar to that of his former boss. Recall, McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts in 2001 and argued for them in 2008.
Not to pick nits, but wouldn’t that be “Holtz-Eakin’s “flip flop” IS THE REVERSE of that of his former boss”?
April 10th, 2009 at 12:52 pmBut but but deficits dont matter…Dick Cheney proved it!!
April 10th, 2009 at 12:56 pmShorter Holtz-Eakin: Please love me!
April 10th, 2009 at 12:59 pmIs it that he didn’t believe the things he was selling or is it a change of mind based on some revelation (like verifiable facts)?
April 10th, 2009 at 1:04 pmCreating an argentina style meltdown here was the conservatives plan all along. just read klein’s work on disaster capitalism and the shock doctrine of their hero milton friedman
April 10th, 2009 at 1:08 pmUh oh, someone is going to get a call from Rush the Drug addict Domincan Underage Prostitute abuser, or maybe a stalking from OLielly the Falafel Pervert.
Kind of strange that both of these guys are perverts, what is it, some sort of club?

Great book by Naomi.
For those who don’t get/read the Chicago Tribune, their magazine had an interesting article recently about Obama and the U of Chicago (”home” to Friedman and his ilk):

My thoughts exactly.

I agree. I don’t think they realized, though, that by the time it happened, people would be smart enough with enough access to information to determine that it was their fault. I think their plan all along was to blame it on the durn libs.
Oh, well, neocons – welcome to the information age. We don’t have to remember what you did. We can just play back the tape. On YouTube, no less.
April 10th, 2009 at 1:56 pmAh, welcome to Chez Goop. For a starter we have Mormon crickets in a delicate whine sauce. Our soup is backwash coal sludge. The fish entree is broiled flipflop. And our main dish is crow, served with relish.

April 10th, 2009 at 3:35 pmWhy do you think they’re called the Gross Old Perverts — GOP, for short?
April 10th, 2009 at 3:40 pmAh, so sorry sir, Chez Goop has had to take oysters off the menu. It gives them ideas.
April 10th, 2009 at 3:44 pmThey were most likely lying to appease the base. More Bush politics: three lies make it true. Does anybody trust that party?
April 10th, 2009 at 4:44 pmDidn’t the conservatives in the U.S. Senate the other day (both Republicans and Democrats) vote to get rid of the Estate Tax?
Aaaah, I see. The culture of corruption conservatives essentially voted the way they did so that their own children will not have to pay for what these culture of corruption conservatives have done to our country, instead passing onto future generations, the children of poor and middle-class American citizens, the brunt of these huge budget deficits caused by irresponsible and criminal conservative policies and wars.
Well, at least these conservatives are consistent…in their evil. They only think about themselves and their children first, and to hell with the rest of our nation and our nation’s children.
