As ThinkProgress and others have pointed out, the Fox News Channel has staked out its position as the “voice of opposition” to the Obama administration by aggressively promoting the radical anti-Obama “tea party” protests set for April 15. Fox News hosts like Neil Cavuto claim that they are only broadcasting live from the events in order to “cover” them. But as Media Matters’ Karl Frisch pointed out in his column yesterday, Cavuto’s colleague, Glenn Beck, announced on his radio show this week that he is raising money for the protests as well:
Beck isn’t just helping with turnout. Discussing his participation in the upcoming protest at the Alamo in San Antonio on his syndicated radio program, Beck announced, “I’m going to do a fundraiser for them” to help defray costs. “So you can come and you can have lunch with me. … I don’t know any of the details, but I’ve heard it’s like $500 a plate or something like that.”

April 11th, 2009 at 3:03 pmI don’t think these Tea Bag Parties are going to be a big deal. They sound kind of silly to me. Especially considering who’s making a big deal out of them, Fox Newsless Channel.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:04 pmIf these guys would just smoke the tea instead of drinking it maybe we would be on the same page .
April 11th, 2009 at 3:05 pmThey look pretty peaceful to me. Mostly old rich people with time on their hands is all so far.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:06 pmBeck must be joking – $500 a plate – LMMFAO!
April 11th, 2009 at 3:07 pmI can’t wait til this shyte blows up in Beck’s face!
All this teabagging nonsense!
500 bucks to have lunch with becky? do you at least get to slam him in the face with a pie at the end?
April 11th, 2009 at 3:08 pmCan any of these teabaggers (who came up with that name anyway) afford $500?
April 11th, 2009 at 3:08 pmBeck better be careful at that dinner — one of those guys NBC hired to hurt him might poison his food.

Can any of these teabaggers afford $500?
They could use their Obama Tax Cuts.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:15 pmThe tea baggers seem quite motivated to do something. Maybe the meeting will be a productive one. Maybe they will put together their “tea baggers budget to recovery plan” and present it to their representatives. Maybe they will come up with something useful that president Obama can apply. Cross your fingers.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:15 pmIt’s a free country. Beck can do what he wants when it comes to tea parties. He can march in them like Michelle Malkin did with anti-Obama demonstrators in Colorado (although I would stay away from posing for pictures with people sporting swastikas). I could care less about these parties, since it appears FNC has already tried to pawn them off as their own.
However.
Charging $500 for a person to eat lunch with Glenn Beck sounds…almost governmental in approach. Beck better be putting this money where the money’s supposed to go. 100%.
And that food better be sitting on a gold plate.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:16 pmThose are some pretty expensive tea bags…

April 11th, 2009 at 3:23 pmWhen Bush was in office we were told to support him.
We were told not supporting him was “unpatriotic” and even “treason”.
President Obama has been in office for less than 90 days and the right wing is organizing protests “why” exactly?
What exactly is patriotic about these protests again, …given the man has been in office less than 3 short months?
April 11th, 2009 at 3:23 pmBeck to attend $500 a plate fundraiser for ‘tea party’ protests.

April 11th, 2009 at 3:32 pm“non-consensual conservative tea-bagging”…
ah hahahahaha!
April 11th, 2009 at 3:33 pmThis foolishness baffles me. Beck & Co. and several repug congressmen are determined to make a spectacle of something that is illogical.
1. The debt and deficit that they are now so worried about occurred under Bush’s rule. They sat on their thumbs for 8 years while he squandered a surplus, and brought the deficit to $1 trillion — while he advocated everyone to join the ownership society, and deregulators not only allowed anyone to buy a home, they also allowed for investment banks to enter the banking industry and the insurance industry as well, plus allowing the giant AIG to “insure” all the bad business that started it all.
2. The Obama administration inherited this, and since corporate America and the financial industry, like the general public, are over-extended and cannot make a move, the only entity left with any money is the federal government.
(During the Depression when Hoover chose to let the chips fall where they may and therefore exacerbated a crisis, Obama is being proactive, as the only reasonable choice in the bag full of bad choices left on the White House doorstep.)
3. Obama is the advocate for the average American, paradoxically those average Americans who are buying tea bags by the carton are blaming him. They are not the millionaires of the nation who will see their taxes raised 3%, but they are the average Americans who will all see a tax cut – some of which have already begun with payroll taxes 4/1/09.
So what is with these protestors – are they that stupid?
It should be the repugs as their target; the ones who got us here. Instead, they believe the distortions and lies from Fox, and the repugs in congress, and are continuing to act against their own best interests.
And Fox will be there to exploit it all.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:34 pmCheck out the old Sex and the City video for an explanation of what teabagging is — or just Google it.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:36 pmFor $500, Beck includes a souvenir teacup of your very own…
April 11th, 2009 at 3:36 pmAnd a great big thank you from The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company (A&P), Lipton Tea, Tetley Tea, and Constant Comment Tea. It is nice to see our patriotic brethren trying their best to stimulate our economy by buying tea, not for drinking but for fouling the local waters with tannins. This is a form of conspicuous consumption, as pointed out by Thorstein Veblen many, many years ago in 1899 in his brilliant book, The Theory of the Leisure Class.
April 11th, 2009 at 3:39 pmJust what has Obama done in 75 days that deserves such protestations?
April 11th, 2009 at 3:39 pmNow, if they want to protest Bush – albeit after the fact – there may be some delayed logic in that.
Will he be bringing two turntables and a microphone?
April 11th, 2009 at 3:40 pmOh sorry you ment the idiot Beck not the genius Beck…
28. Marie Says: This foolishness baffles me.
It fairly simple, really. If Obama and the dems succeeds where the entire republican-controlled 8-year circus belly-flopped, they will never live it down. (I’ll help see to that…)
The republicans want a do-over, and they’ll destroy any possibility of Obama’s or dem success any way they can. The entire country has remarried, and the abusive ‘ex’ is still stalking and sabotaging the new union, trying to prove it wasn’t his fault. Nothing is his fault….

A common man doesn’t attend a political fundraiser while ponying up $500 for dinner.
A man with an uncommon forked tongue does attend a $500 a plate dinner while pretending to be an everyman though. I bet this is why Glenn was so afraid to spend money on his staffer’s wedding present.
I guess Glenn now has a self-dousing of gasoline fetish after last Thursday’s show.

April 11th, 2009 at 4:52 pmFirst – I’d like to compare what the median taxpayer would gain in retained taxes if the tea baggers prevail vs. $ 500. What is the ROI ?
Then, even if I were inclined to held the tea baggers defray their costs (which appear to be heavily subsidized by Faux), I can’t imagine going on the basis of “I think its $ 500 or something like that” and I think there is lunch involved.
April 11th, 2009 at 5:03 pmThe more I see the Faux astroturfing, the more I wonder if Faux or other wealthy donor will be paying actors to appear at these events as “little people”.
Then the days of the events are staggered – be on the lookout for the same people appearing in the crowds of multiple events.

April 11th, 2009 at 5:18 pmSo what “expenses” are they talking about? A grass roots gathering doesn’t cost anything. People make their own signs and show up at a certain place at a certain time. Do you think the need the money to fly protesters into the state and put them up in hotels? If so, that’s not what I would call a “grass roots” protest.

Written by: Limpballs, Jindal, Alan Keyes and Sanford.
Narratives by: Cry-baby Beck, Hypocrite Palin and Jeb “baby-boy swindler” Bush.
Music by: Condolezza Rice
Some proceeds will help fund Bush’s “Lie’s and Thoughtless Governing” Policy Institute.
And the rest of the proceeds will go toward our cause to push the “Individualistic Culture of Hate” for America.
We also like to thank our participants the “Tea-Beggers” for their stupidity and money to fund our cause.

April 11th, 2009 at 6:22 pmHow dare these right wingers? To think they would protest something peacefully, do they have no shame? And to think corporations would also protest and help raise funds for the protest. Don’t corporations know that they are evil and have no rights? It’s not like they employ many Americans and provide goods and services that everybody uses.
It really is sad to think that anybody would protest historic government spending if they don’t agree with it. That is not what this country is about, one should not be able to protest if they don’t agree with the government.

April 12th, 2009 at 11:04 amThey are just out to sling mud, facts be dam*ed.
Do any of the Teabaggers actually know what the Boston Tea Party, that they are so pathetically trying to emulate, was about? The East India Company (an 18th century “corporation”) was the largest in England and going bankrupt. They were the largest supplier of tea in the world. The British government abolished the tea tax for East India, thereby subsidizing them and allowing them to sell their tea cheaper than the competitors. Then the government passed a law saying the colonies could ONLY buy their tea from East India, preventing colonial tea growers and buyers from plying their trade. THAT’S why the tea was thrown into the harbor! Not “taxation without representation.” Not raised taxes. A government protecting the corporation and screwing the people. Sound familiar, you teabagging morons?

NEW YORK – Glenn Beck, Fox News Channel’s latest sensation, is taking a comedy show on the road for six live performances over six days during the first week of June.
Beck calls his act a “poor man’s Seinfeld” and intends to mix topical humor with his modern-day reimagining of Thomas Paine’s 1776 pamphlet “Common Sense.”
April 12th, 2009 at 1:31 pmWhat if they held a tea bag party and no body came? Or better yet, the news media just ignored it. We all know that Fox will make a big deal about. We should just invalidate this tea bag party by ignoring any and all coverage.

April 12th, 2009 at 9:14 pmOne begins to wonder if FOX hiring Beck is just a money laundering scheme.
Like this, Hire Beck and pay him alot of money for crap performances. Make sure he channels a good portion of that salary he is paid to republican causes and campaigns.
Just a wondering mind…………….

Was your answer to me a JOKE? Because it certainly was STUPID and it certainly WASNT Olbermann ADVOCATING protests. He wasnt telling people to take to the streets and protest the war he was telling REPUBLICANS its time for THEM to speak up about the war. That is hardly the same thing as Fox is doing ADVOCATING participation in a particular organized protest. Please tell me you arent so STUPID that you cant see the difference

What do you think Olbermann was doing there? Typical hypocrisy.

He was telling Republicans to speak out against the war he WASNT advocating a specific anti war protest. His post wasnt hypocrisy because you are so stupid you cant tell the difference between those two things
