Dobson concedes that the far right has ‘lost’ the culture war.

In a farewell address to the staff of Focus on the Family, James Dobson conceded that evangelical conservatives had lost most of the recent so-called “culture war” battles. Attributing the right’s recent failures to the “internet” and the election of Bill Clinton, Dobson said, “Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost.” He added that the nation is now “absolutely awash in evil“:

dobson.jpgThe battles that we fought in the Eighties now, we were victorious in many of those conflicts with the culture, trying to defend righteousness, trying to defend the unborn child, trying to preserve the dignity of the family and the definition of marriage. We fought all those battles and really it was a holding action. [...]

[W]e made a lot of progress through the Eighties but then we turned into the Nineties and the internet came along and a new president came along and all of that went away and now we are absolutely awash in evil. And we are right now in the most discouraging period of that long conflict. Humanly speaking, we can say that we have lost all those battles, but God is in control and we are not going to give up now, right?

Steve Benen writes, “[W]hether Dobson and his cohorts give up now or not, his assessment about their lack of success is nevertheless accurate.”

  4. Wiz says:

By refering to the internet, what Dobson is saying is that the right lost the so-called culture war because people have enough information, from multiple sources to understand that the right is wrong, at least among those people who know how read and care to practice that skill.

  7. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

    Dr. Dobson,

I would say that your first mistake was to frame the entire situation as a “war”. Because with a “war” framework came all the violent imagery and hate-filled rhetoric, and I would suggest that it was that violence and hate that turned people away from you and your message.

I would say your second mistake was to describe your opponents as “evil”. This was a polarizing, rather than a unifying, tactic and it probably cost you the support of people in the middle. Like many other failed right wing strategies, rather than try to appeal to the middle, you chose to solidify your base.

And I would say your third mistake was to assume that the entire nation wanted to be like you, and that they should accept your views on what God wants people to do. This also cost you support.

Dr. Dobson, if you think that your way of living is what’s needed to get into Heaven, then all I can say is that a majority of the country disagrees with you.

Lastly, Dr. Dobson, I want to wish you and yours a Happy Easter.

P.S. I hope you aren’t trying to blame this on Clinton, are you? Because that would be mistake number four.

  8. ralph the wonder locust says:

So… if I understand correctly… It’s Bill Clinton’s fault, and eight years of an evangelical Christianist in the White House with a pliant Republican (the Good Guys™) Congress in the first decade of this new century, not to mention “T-Warriors” in the media like Bill O’Reilly and Glenn Beck with their “skyrocketing ratings” weren’t enough to turn the tide in this culture war?

I’d say you gave it your best shot, Dr. Dobson, and God just wasn’t on your side.

The supreme arrogance of these charlatans pretending to be speaking for God and God’s will is what appalls me most. Christ is portrayed in the gospels as a humble man who embraced the weak, the poor, the “sinner.” The only anger Christ showed was at the moneylenders and sanctimonious religious hypocrites. Dobson and his ilk learned nothing from Christ.

  12. fire _ant_chavis says:

Good riddance to bad rubbage. Discrimination against gays & lesbians still exists and people like Dobson continue to fan the flames of hatred. We’re not going back to the past. Women should have the right to choose whether they want children. Get over it Dobson – we won’t have our rights stripped away. Thank goodness people have the sense to know what’s right and how to get the facts. Where does Dobson get off referring to our nation as being “awash in evil?” There are alot of sickos right in the church – some churches are like mental hospitals.

Dobbie has some re-thinking to do. Based on results, the possibilities are:

    1. God doesn’t exist.

    2. God doesn’t give a damn what Dobbie and his friends want, and probably doesn’t give a damn about anyone else either.

    3. God approves of sex of all kinds, and has no investment in embryos. In other words, Dobbie is on the wrong side.

That sounds like a perfect solution, except that the right doesn’t “get” irony.

  24. Marie says:

Dobson doesn’t get it — he appeals to his base by saying they have lost the “war” but it was people like himself who declared this imaginary war.
From their pulpits, the religious right have preached misogyny and homphobia, while instilling unwarranted fears in the minds of their flock regarding Muslims and other religions. In the face of all evidence to the contrary, they have denied science from carbon dating to test tubes and climate change.
Their narrow views on politics and their unending pressure to turn our secular nation into a theocracy have been detrimental to the freedoms and liberty guaranteed to all Americans.
I don’t think this is a white flag from Dobson – he and his ilk have not given up their “war” – I think this is a way to rally his sheeple.

  25. corsair says:

I disagree. I think Dobson and Company have been mostly victorious. They had 8 years of the idiot Bush, a “glorious” Iraq war, the criminalization of marijuana, the ongoing militarization of American culture and Fox News.

there are many things wrong in america but I doubt religion is the answer.

maybe spiritual awareness as we learn from karma.

And I respectfully disagree with you. What Dobson and his ilk (such a perfect word) wanted, they didn’t get. They did a poor job of displaying the righteousness they wanted the rest of us to exhibit, abortion is still legal, and gays are not being shot on sight. In those goals, they definitely failed.

But as for the other stuff you mentioned, that wasn’t Dobson’s success, that was Rove’s. Rove used Dobson and the Christian Right to get us “8 years of the idiot Bush, a “glorious” Iraq war, the criminalization of marijuana, the ongoing militarization of American culture and Fox News.”

Until Saturday, that was the main impression neighbors and family had of 28-year-old Melissa Huckaby.

What they apparently never suspected was that the brown-haired single mother with the quiet smile might kill an 8-year-old girl, then stuff the body in a suitcase and hide it in a pond – but that’s just what Tracy police say Huckaby did.

I don’t think that Dr. Dobson is implying that he’s awash in evil, so he must be talking about other people—-and that sir, is judging. When you set out to do “God’s will” by disobeying His written word, then you shouldn’t be surprised if things don’t work out. All Jesus ever asked of you was to live your life with love and to manage your own life. When people start trying to rip the mote out of other people’s eyes, they usually do a poor job of it because the tree in their own eye makes it hard to see. If the Christian right actually lived the life of love that Jesus displayed instead of trying to force their views on others, more people would be attracted to Jesus because the fruits of love would be so sweet. It takes more love to accept another person as they are and trust that God is reaching out to their hearts, as much as he is reaching out to yours, than it does to pray fervently——that they will do just what you say they should do. God doesn’t prevent us from praying unwisely, but unwise prayers aren’t the most powerful either.

These are the same faith-based bullies and hypocrites who believe the earth is somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 years old despite the fact that it’s actually 4,500,000,000 years old.

It’s always amazed me that the believers who claim to live their lives by the living words of one of the multiple interpretations of the bible pick and choose which words ARE and ARE NOT to be interpreted literally.

The “explanation” that the word “years” may not mean 365 24 hour days is self-contradictory and an admission that the bible IS NOT a literal document but one that is literally dependent on the reader’s subjective interpretation rather than a verbatim dissemination of the objective universal living words of god.

And, by the way, why should a book that has been interpreted and translated numerous times from numerous languages by numerous biased and fallible human beings over a period of more than 2,000 years be necessary as proof and or a justification of religious faith? When faith itself is so completely ethereal, why do so many people need to draw comfort and or proof of anything, let alone argue about the true meanings of the words in a book?

If people are true in their beliefs, they should live them rather than debate them. Therein lies the hypocrisy of Christianity and religion in general. It’s not a competition or a popularity contest or proving your god is the one true god. And it’s certainly not a political, cultural or societal weapon.

The vast majority of religious believers who place so much emphasis on a bible/book neither faithfully practice their so-called beliefs nor do they project the temperament, values or spiritual enlightenment that all bibles/books of religion contain. Where in any interpretation of and bible/book does it suggest that god wants people to use their religious faith as a tool, weapon and or political litmus test? The “Christians” who do that aren’t just misinterpreting the words of the bible, they are perverting them into political/cultural sledge hammers of unrighteousness.

Dobson perverted Christianity! Christ stood for love, Dobson, not so much. The fear and hate-mongering did the phoney Dobson in. The evil, yes, of the phoney right-wingnut Christians.

  90. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

He’s right about that, and the evil is the Republican party and their evangelical base.

  91. Stephanurus says:

  92. Hawkeye says:

The more people learn the less they are buying what the religious right is trying to sell. Of course people like Dobson see education as an evil because it means less money for him.

  93. Barb C. says:

    In honor of Easter:

Founding fathers and mothers left us a mandate
We’ve got to separate the church and the state
So get your head straight before it’s too late
And you drop it in the plate, you must appreciate

Jesus and money make a man speak in tongues
Scream out his lungs, roll in the dung
And when the song is sung, he moves up another rung
And the deaf and the dumb are the ones who get stung

Here comes the sex police, they’re at your bedroom door
Movin’ in next door, searchin’ from floor to floor
You know what they’re lookin’ for
Someone’s always keepin’ score every time you dip the oar

    Love isn’t fun no more

Fascist christ, come to the rescue
Gimme that old time religion, here it comes

Let’s get fundamental about this strange philosophy
In which God and man are enemies
In which there is no serenity unless you happen to believe
Precisely what they want you to believe, and no diversity

Come join the army and learn the noises
That drown out the others’ voices and please the devil
Who rejoices when mankind has no choices
And power exploits us, and peace avoids us

Guess who to the rescue on a holy mission
To uphold the tradition of the spanish inquisition
And preempt your decision by forcing your confession
Now let that be a lesson

Who do you think you’re messin’ with?

    Somebody took our God away

    –Todd Rundgren/ Fascist Christ

and so the exaggerated height of church steeples…not to mention their flammable wooden construction…presented a puzzling but undeniable reality:

the Almighty seemed to have a perverse appetite for burning down the buildings erected in his honor.”

  95. JNA1982 says:

I don’t think that the values are the bulk of the problem. I think it’s that the extreme right wing values are embraced by the same types of people that wished we could go back to the times of forced segregation, ethnocentrism, and other types of pointless discrimination. IF these people were so Christian, they would know that they are to love everyone in the world as Christ has loved them. That means that it’s NOT okay to verbally or physically abuse people because they are gay, ethnic/racial minority, non-Christian, or not an American citizen. These are things that people with a conscience would consider wrong.

Christianity has as much validity as Scientology, witchcraft, or satan worshipping. All are based on a bunch of voodoo, black magic, and superstitious nonsense.

Well, what do you think? Pretty outrageous statement, eh?

What you are experiencing is some of the pain, anger, and outrage felt by the homosexual community when their lifestyle is equated with pedophilia or bestiality.

Of course, you will no doubt claim that your comparisons are justified whereas the other one is not. Just further evidence of the holier-than-thou self-righteousness, prejudice, and hypocrisy of the so-called “religious right”.

Fundamentalists always regard knowledge and inquiry “evil,” because, according to their creation myth, humans were thrown out of Eden for daring to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, which was the one tree forbade them to eat from.

This is an interesting insight, sort of a God wants us to be stupid theology.

  102. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    .

    Dear James Dobson,
The mission of being a Christian is about seeking the goodness and glory in each person within society. That is where you have lost the struggle. Not with society nor with the people, but within yourself. You let your instinctive reflex focus on the evils among us thus clinging to the inherent evil within you as your guiding principle, seeking outwardly answers that only can be found within.

    May God bless us all…

  107. marlow says:

Looking at the picture of Dobby there, let me just say I’d be skeptical of ANY human being who would stand in an expensive suit in a pulpit with a golden cross plastered on the front. 112. gdunn says:

Dr. Dobson has a selective view of Christianity. His Family Research Council promoted four or five “non-negotiable” items for this past election (and I would guess for many elections).

It was the typical right wing stuff. I asked about the economy and jobs–that was “negotiable.” These church people were actually going to go canvass a neighborhood, in which, the majority of jobs were linked to the domestic auto industry and they were not going to promote a candidate who supported 1) Jobs and 2) helping the auto industry.

What was their focus was; 1) abortion, 2) gay marriage, 3) stem cell research; 4) against legalizing marijuana, and I believe there was one more.

Helping the poor was off limits. A lot of what is Biblically true was off limits.

Dobson and others can speak of wedge issues all they want, with some success, when we all have jobs. When we don’t have jobs and he keeps talking about wedge issues, that will only last so long.

  115. www.fikrinne.blogspot.com says:

I would say your second mistake was to describe your opponents as “evil”. This was a polarizing, rather than a unifying, tactic and it probably cost you the support of people in the middle. Like many other failed right wing strategies, rather than try to appeal to the middle, you chose to solidify your base.

  116. curious says:

When any group, Christian or otherwise decides to take over and sets itself up as the conscience of an entire country, they deserve to lose. This fascist coalition of groups banded together and sought to become the arbiter of everyones morals, they must lose.

No philosophy exists that should speak for an entire country. No group should be allowed to force their beliefs on everyone. And no religion should be foremost as a rule of government. Surely the middle east is a prime example of what happens when religion rules a country. Our Constitution was set up to protect us from that abuse.

And what did the guardians of our morality do? The men like Dobson who pressed their vision of right and wrong on others?
They promoted the administration of Bush. They condoned his illegal excursion into war. They sat quietly as he shredded our rights. They said nothing as he advocated torture in our name. All in the name of our Christian president. They have been so wedded to the thought of power, with access to the president. All because he claimed Christianity.

And they promoted intolerance, fascism, sexism in the name of god. (small g). This group of evangelical morally moribund terrorists. These nuts that seek to regress intellectually to some backward time, when thinkers were jailed and witches were burned. Dobson should resign.

But there are more like him and worse out there. We never seem to run short of these people that fear everything not in the bible. He represents this ministers of intolerance. He is a man of no moral consequence.

It’s not simply that they lost the so called culture war, they lost their way entirely. They see it as a lost war. I see it as kind of referendum on their practices. Their shallow grasp of what the teacher Jesus actually taught. They do no speak the words of Jesus. They do not represent the actions of love. They are so far removed from what his teachings were, they are doomed to fail.

I am one of those secular humanists they so detest. They failed because there are some us that do not fear reason. Some of us do not feel blind obedience is the way to live. Reason, and decency and love do not exist only in religion. It is possible to care and to nurture without the chaining of the mind and heart. Spirituality can exist without religion the way it is practiced in this world.

  118. AlexLawyer says:

Dobson is absolutely correct! The nation is awash with evil. A vicious war of aggression for oil in Iraq, summary executions, forced disappearances, torture, massive tax breaks for the rich and reduction of services for the poor, moralistically enforcing scientifically unsound policies leading to the spread of HIV and unwanted pregnancies, destruction of the environment and refusal to take action, legalizing fraud by Wall Street and now refusal to confront those responsible for the 8 year crime spree known as the Bush Administration are pure evil, and all have been enthusiastically supported by Dobson and his fellow conservative Christians.

  119. flight says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t if Franklin who said “Not a country of God, but a country of Godly people”. I consider myself a good Christian and Mr. Dobson failed to speak of or for Christianity. Christ gave the direct command “render to Caesar’s what is Caesar’s, and render to the Lord what is the Lord’s”. What Mr. Dobson was to cozy up a little to close to Caesar, and now he is wringing his hands because the effort bared no fruit. I don’t think we have as a culture failed, but in those areas where guidance was needed, yours was poorly given, Mr.Dobson. It is not up to this government to provide moral compass, nor is it societies. You and your collages are charged with that mission. If you think you have failed, better look inward!

Actually I was referring to the fact that Osama hates things like Porn & Homo’s & all the other vices that the left holds in reverence so well. Could it be that the Left is the reason that Osama decided to attack those poor defenseless people on 9/11? I have read with complete shock the evil things a lot of you have written about people and blaming everyone from Republicans to Bush to Cheny to you name it…when maybe you should just look inward to yourselves as the cause?

You don’t have to worry about Dobson. He sounds more positive if you actually get a representative view of the address:

“But God is in control and we are not going to give up now, right? (Applause) The world has turned colder for the family in recent years and there is such hostility to anyone who holds to a faith. And we are going to take the heat. But I have been assured by the board, and by many of you, that we’re not going to cow, we’re not going to be discouraged.
