Kristol Uses Pirate Crisis To Argue For More Defense Spending

kristol-furrowed.jpgEarlier this month, Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a plan to reorient defense spending away from lucrative boondoggles for contractors and toward systems that are proven to work and are needed in present-day military situations. Conservatives immediately cried foul; Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) went so far as to claim that the Obama administration “is willing to sacrifice the lives of American military men and women for the sake of domestic programs.”

Right-wing pundit Bill Kristol was among the conservatives fearmongering about the supposed “cuts.” Following North Korea’s test launch of a missile, Kristol declared that “it is scary to have a president” talk about cutting the defense budget. “It is a very dangerous moment,” he said. Today on Bill Bennett’s radio show, Kristol said he hoped that the pirate crisis would make President Obama think twice before following through on the proposed budget reforms:

KRISTOL: Unfortunately, given the world we live in, this [military funding] is not something we can skimp. And that’s another thing I hope the president realizes

BENNETT: Budget cuts. The defense budget cuts, right?

KRISTOL: Well I hope he thinks about that. I mean, a lot of things that don’t look necessary — who needs the a big destroyer, the U.S.S. Bainbridge? Who needs Seals getting hours, weeks, months of training being snipers, isn’t that something that went out of fashion 70 years go? You can imagine people making these arguments. And it turns out, a lot of these things turn out to be important. … And I do hope it makes him sort of understand that there’s no substitute for having a strong and large military, honestly.

Listen here:

Kristol cites the pirate crisis — and the use of the U.S.S. Bainbridge — as some sort of proof that the plan to shift resources away from costly Naval destroyers is misguided. However, there was no need for a massive naval destroyer; in fact, it took “several hours” for the 8,000-ton ship to arrive at the scene. Indeed, as Matthew Yglesias noted, Gates himself mocked the idea that such ships could defend against pirates:

Gates is holding on to the Littoral Combat System project for the Navy even though the program has had a lot of cost overruns and so forth. Gates said that despite the problems, “I think it has a capability we just have to have.” Specifically, the promise of a ship that’s not only agile, but relative cheap on a per-ship basis is large. “You don’t need a $5 billion ship to go after pirates,” Gates said.

A greater number of less expensive ships would be arguably more effective than fewer, expensive naval destroyers like the Bainbridge and its even more expensive successors, the DDG-1000, which Gates is seeking to cut. Indeed, the defense budget reforms reflect the type of “reshaping,” Gates said, “that the combatant commanders are asking for.”

Kristol is not alone is seeking to use the pirate crisis to shill for increased defense spending. Last week, Fox military analyst Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney said on air that he would deploy the massively expensive and unproved F-22 to combat pirates. Conveniently, McInerney is a consultant for one of the F-22’s major contractors.

Why don’t we just have everyone here work for the military and spend all our money on warships, warplanes, missiles, bombs, etc. and then just use them indescriminately at our leisure. That seems to be what Kristol and his neocon knuckle-draggers want.
I firmly believe that most normal minded people do not want this sort of ideology to hijack our country… again.

  3. wags camponotus saundersi says:

Yes, we need to buy (hundreds!) more Mach 2 capable interceptors in order to defend against pirates in motorized canoes. Makes perfect sense.

  4. fergus says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if these motormouths were required to have active duty military personnel on the air with them when they start their chatter? You know, people who actually know what the military needs, and not some politician who’s trying to keep his share of the defense money flowing home, building unnecessary and unusable junk like the F-22.

  5. Hoodathunktick says:

Just a thought, but, if we didn’t keep selling high tech weaponry to the rest of the world, we might not have to defend against it.

Between the SEALS, the Rangers, the Green Berets, and Marine Recon the US could probably slide into the Somalian hot spots and retrieve all ships held hostage. Would there be a loss of hostages? Yup. Probably between 10-15% of them.

If we were to launch a conventional attack? More like 95-100% loss. No wonder Bolton is for the conventional.

How many wars does Bolton think we could fight at one time? Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, and Somalia? Of course, in Somalia, they would probably welcome us with flowers just like they did in Iraq.

If we were smart, we’d go in and try to help the poor people of Somalia.

The situation in Somalia is grim at best. 24% of Somali people are suffering from acute malnutrition; this level is greater than the global emergency thresholds [2]. A mere 29% of the population simply has access to safe, clean water. Although the whole population is suffering, Somali children are exceptionally affected by the current conditions.

I know that USAID claims to be feeding 3 million Somalians and that USAID supplies were on the Maersk ship ‘Alabama’. I couldn’t find anything that really assessed how successful that program is there.

It doesn’t matter. As long as Bolton and his Neocon krew are not fighting the good fight themselves, it doesn’t matter how many of YOUR children must die for their wet dreams. Always expect the Neocons to suggest another war – it is what they do.

  28. The Moderate Squad says:

Obama gave the green light and the crises ended with three bullets – pretty cost efficient, and reflective of a new, streamlined military. Kristol just yearns for the good ‘ol Bush days when an attack from Somalian pirates would have caused W. to invade, oh, let’s say Portugal. One would think that as consistently and throughly wrong as Kristol has been for the past decade on every political subject he’s touched he might STFU. But with the Reich, that’s just not how they roll…

Kristol doesnt have to be correct he just has to scare people into spending money on things that go boom.

Kristol is not alone is seeking to use the pirate crisis to shill for increased defense spending. Last week, Fox military analyst Lt. Gen. Tom McInerney said on air that he would deploy the massively expensive and unproved F-22 to combat pirates.

    This is nonsense.

The F22 would not be used to combat these pirates. Everyone knows that. You don’t have to be a military expert to know that the F22 would be the last thing we’d deploy against these pirates on the sea would be the F22.

Helicopters, special teams, destroyers, pt boats, etc, would be how we’d go after them. As Secretary Gates said, we’re fighting two wars now and we haven’t had a need to use them so why would we use them here?

This is nonsense that we’d need them against these indigent pirates.

And as sorry as I am to see the F-22 phased out (its a sweet plane despite its 189 million price tag) what the press fails to report when they report that we’re cutting spending on the F-22 is that we’re INCREASING spending on the F-35, which utilizes the F-22’s technology. Somehow the press always leaves that part of it out.

How is it North Korea demonstrates a missile that, with minor modifications, could reach Los Angles and a week later Gates cuts anti-missile development spending? Kristol would make a better Sec of Def than Gates.

What do I have to fear from North Korea? Is it the same thing I have to fear from Cuba?

  36. winddancer says:

To emphasize – the defense budget was NOT cut, in fact, it will increase by 21%. They’d have something to complain about it the budget was cut as much as I would like — at least 50% or more. All that’s happening is cutting some useless weapon systems. And Kristol would promote going to war against any country or any group, at any time, for any reason. He’s a sick man.

  37. Xisithrus says:

TOD Said: How is it North Korea demonstrates a missile that, with minor modifications, could reach Los Angles and a week later Gates cuts anti-missile development spending?

Cause we got that super expenesive Star Wars system to shoot down missiles!! Im sure Kristol also supported that.

  38. Chuck U. Farley says:

Now that is some great original thinking. Outsource our own missile production to North Korea. We make friends with Kim and we spend less on defense. But we loose all that fear. We could give a couple of missiles to the Somalia pirates just to keep Kristol and the neocons scared.

Maybe someone should tell them that Bush is no longer president!

  69. MapleStreet says:

It seems rather inane for Kristol to be arguing this at this time:

    1) Obama budget increases defense spending.

    2) Gates downgraded the F-22 program.

    3) The hostages of the Somali Pirates were rescued just fine without the F-22s that the wingnuts said were needed.

    4) Hostages were rescued by a handful of old-fashioned snipers. I’m sure their scopes cost a lot of money, but hopefully less than $ 1 billion each.

  89. Cal Malenky says:

Slow drones do a better job of aerial surveillance than supersonic F-22s. The Air Force is dead set against unmanned aircraft, so their generals will do whatever they can to push expensive piloted planes.

  90. dsmith says:

Ya know these necons who push for wars, like Kristol, are always trying to get our military to fight wars that Israel wants, but is to chicken to start themselves. Israel likes to bomb countries with little or no defenses. They know they can get away with mass attacks on the Palestinians, Lebanon, and Syria who cannot match their US supplied aircraft and chemical bombs.

Funny you never see names like Kristol, Krauthammer, Wolfowitz, Goldberg on the list of soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan…why is that?

  91. guzide says:
