Steele skipping Log Cabin Republican convention.

steele.jpgLater this week, the Log Cabin Republicans are hosting their national convention in Washington, DC, which will feature appearances by former New Jersey governor Christie Todd Whitman, former congressman Tom Davis (R-VA) and Meghan McCain. In her Daily Beast column today, McCain reveals that RNC Chairman Michael Steele was invited to speak, but declined due to scheduling issues:

Former Virginia Congressman Tom Davis, a well-respected Republican lawmaker who has made no bones about his desire to see the GOP move on from its obsession over social issues, is also speaking. I understand that Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was invited to speak, but was unable to schedule an appearance.

Steele’s absence will be conspicuous considering that the Log Cabin Republicans initially cheered his election to the chairmanship, but issued a stinging rebuke of his claim that it was “crazy” for the GOP to even “consider” civil unions for same-sex couples.

    Maybe Steele is in denial.

  2. ralph the wonder locust says:

Darn. That’s one fewer chance at top-notch Republican entertainment. Any opportunity for Michael Steele to speak in public is an opportunity for another comment made with the aim of helping him to locate his place on the chess board.

  3. Luis Chapulin M says:

    Scheduling issues? How conveeeeeenient.

  4. Zimzone says:

That closet Steele lives in apparently has no doors…

Yeah, it was either that or “exhaustion”.

  6. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

Whatzamadderwidya, don’t you believe that Steele has a conflict in schedule? I do. I believe he has a very important meeting scheduled with himself to determine how he can say something else strategically stupid in the near future. Cutting edge. Hip.

  7. Teowens says:

Didn’t you guys hear? Steele and Palin are too big to show up just anywhere! They have certain preferences. Being the leaders of the GOP(Next to Limbaugh of course) they simply don’t have time for everything. Steele has to make time for his one-armed midgets and Palin is on the run from the Alaska legislature after originally rejecting stimulus funds.

  8. Toddford says:

    big tent! …in your pants.

  9. spearNmagicHelmet says:

the old skip the meeting and then see what they all say about me ploy…..we fall for that everytime.

  10. Buckie Boy says:

You da man, you da man.

    Fcuk the Republicans

  11. kasinca says:

The wingnuts get nuttier all the time. It is hilarious.

  12. CageyCretin says:

Steele’s afraid if he goes he might get some “gay’ on him. You know, first its speaking engagements, next thing you know they’ll have him in a leather miniskirt and pink, fluffy midriff shirt, lipsynching to Barbara Streisand tunes.

(Oh, wait… that was me at that party this last weekend…..)

Would it be fair to consider this move “en passant”?

  14. kpaul says:

I am still baffled that something like the log cabin republicans even exists. The GOP has taken an official stand against the gay community. They don’t want us. That has been made clear again and again, in as blunt a way as is possible.

I am gay, and have views that could be considered conservative, but I will NEVER sign on with a group whose official stance on gay people is almost entirely negative. And yet the LCR still don’t get that they are not wanted or needed in any conceivable way. Steel’s response should be no surprise, but they seem to have been surprised by it anyway.

Gay Republicans are like Jewish Nazis.

  15. Brian Crooks says:

I’m not surprised, but it is pretty weak that he won’t show up at the Log Cabin REPUBLICANS convention but begged and pleaded to get to speak at the Chicago “nonpartisan” Tax Day Tea Party. On a side note, is that not the funniest picture of Steele in existence?

  16. Trittydi says:

This man is a monumental coward. All his actions speak to this – so this certainly can’t surprise anyone, can it?

  17. KateWords says:

No, no, you don’t understand! This is part of his strategy! What Steele REALLY meant by he won’t be there, is he WILL be there. He’s just testing people’s responses, remember? It’s all part of the masterful Steele Strategy none of us can possibly hope to grasp with our limited intellects…

  18. Wiz says:

And why is there such a thing as a gay Republican?

  19. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Isn’t it funny how they always have “scheduling conflicts” whenever it comes to attending the Log Cabin conventions.

For the life of me, I don’t understand how any self-respecting gay person could ever be a Republican.

  20. cypher says:

“Gay republicans”, tee-hee, I cant help but giggle a little when i hear that. It’s almost as funny as a black man being in charge of the RNC. LOL.

  21. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

lemmie get this straight: he’c clamoring for a “big tent” repukie party yet refuses to meet with one population of his group? perhaps steel has a teabagging party to go to instead

  22. barracks9 says:

Scheduling Conflict…isn’t that the same sort of euphemism that celebrities use when they check into a facility with “exhaustion”?

Or when public officials suddenly decide to leave their post to”spend more time with their family”?

  23. nanlichi nasschagii says:

So far Steele has spotted two rooks and the king side bishop. Quite the gambit Steele, now try it blindfolded.

    You da man!

  24. Bozo The Neocootiebug says:

    hey steele,
this whole teabagging idea was developed by and practiced whole heartedly by the log cabin republicans. guess the joke’s on you, hater

  25. 5th Estate says:

    I’m not gay, so presumably I can’t be as confused.bemused as kpaul(#14).

Stay strong kpaul. Don’t think of them as gay first, think of them as deranged first. It might help.

  26. wolfsinger says:

    Mr. Steele,

Just a reminder that the Republicans have a long history of forming and maintaining “exclusionary” clubs.

How’s that working out for you?

  27. Libellula saturata Annie says:

    “Scheduling issues” my fat ASS!!!

  28. Rob says:

Further evidence to back up my claim that being gay and republican doesn’t fit. When the head of the GOP isn’t even going to meet with another GOP group, it’s time to abandon ship.

  29. Doc Rock says:

He’s probably afraid he wouldn’t be able to control himself.

  30. neoconsrscum says:

Hmmmm… Masochistic republicans would be a better term.

WHY? Vote for the party that votes against your interests?

  31. fletc3her says:

I’m conflicted about the Log Cabin Republicans. On the one hand I do appreciate that they are trying to influence the party to drop bigotry from its platform and stop using divisive hate speech to rally its members. On the other hand I can’t reconcile the notion that anyone who is gay or lesbian would belong to a party whose platform is so hateful and whose politicians revel in their bigotry.

  32. MapleStreet says:

Log Cabin republicans meet Uncle Tom’s Cabin ?

  34. Crazy Cricket Cat Lady says:

Come on, it’s easy! The LCR’s value money above all else.

  35. wldj says:

    Crazy Cricket Cat Lady Says:

Money, money, money speaks for itself. They will take the money and give you the big tax breaks just stay away from me and if you are poor vote for me because I feel you pain but you stay away unless it’s at the polls because that’s truly the only place the repugs want you.

  36. J. Fred Smug says:

Gotta love Michael Steele: he’s right out in front, narrowing the tent of the GOP even further.

  37. flight says:

Steele, a man of character, a leader in his own mind. I believe he has the stuff all good republicans are made of,
    Bullsh#$.

  38. marlow says:

Careful, Mikey, no one knows about your penchant for stall-tapping…yet.
