After CNBC’s Jim Cramer sat down for a brutal confrontation with The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart in March, he originally replied to criticism by saying that he was glad his head “was still attached” after the interview and that he was “thrilled to have been in the tourney.” But Cramer soon took a more aggressive tone towards Stewart, calling his criticism “naive and misleading.” Apparently, Cramer hasn’t let go of his frustration over the interview. In an interview Ohio State’s The Lantern last week, Cramer said that Stewart “came on strictly to try to humiliate me“:
“It was a complete and utter ambush,” Cramer said in an interview with The Lantern. “He told my staff that it was going to be fun, convivial, no clips, but [it] doesn’t matter, he’s a comedian, he can do whatever he wants.” [...]
“Was it a fair fight? No, it wasn’t even a fight. I came on with the idea of taking a high road approach and discussing the issues, obviously [Stewart] came on strictly to try to humiliate me,” Cramer said. “It was brutal. Was he stand-up? Absolutely not. Did he comport himself as a gentleman? Hardly. It was a deposition; he wants to be a prosecutor.”
In the interview with The Lantern, Cramer also claimed that he believed Stewart’s goal was to get him fired: “His goal was just to humiliate and destroy me and probably get me fired, and last I looked, I still have a show.” (HT: Howard Kurtz)
So it’s Jon Stewart’s fault that you couldn’t answer the questions he posed to you?
April 14th, 2009 at 2:26 pm…”last I looked, I still have a show.”
For now, Jim, for now.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:28 pmFirst we’ve got to get Kudlow and Santelli.
A month later and he’s still grousing. Such a thin skin for a loudmouth.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:29 pmThat Cramer is an obnoxious loudmouth (who was consistently wrong in presenting bizzness news in his own show-bizzy way) had nothing to do with it, I am absolutely certain.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:30 pmI thought Jon Stewart was a son asking questions on behalf of his parents, who just experienced a severe haircut in their retirement savings.
Kramer purports to offer those same folks advice on his show. Why the mismatch, Jimbo?
April 14th, 2009 at 2:33 pmJon wasn’t stand up? Well, much of his show he does sit down. And I suppose it is difficult to wrap one’s head around the idea that a comedian might actually have the instincts and style of a real…gasp…journalist.
Face it, Cramer, he so owned you and that is why you are whining.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:34 pmCramer, please, this was no ambush. You knew exactly what you were going to face when you accepted the invite to appear on The Daily Show. Every media outlet was publicizing the spat between you and Jon and you helped fueled fire by talking sh!t on Morning Joe. Now you’ve gotten your ass handed to you and you’re trying to save face. Everyone who saw the interview saw that you are pitiful human being.
Don’t blame Jon for that, blame your parents
April 14th, 2009 at 2:34 pmWHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, CRAMER.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:35 pmIsn’t that pretty much typical of a bully? To complain when someone beats up on you the same way you are toward others?
April 14th, 2009 at 2:36 pmSome call that journalism.

April 14th, 2009 at 2:37 pmMan I hate to hear a grown man whine so.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:38 pmI certainly did not think it was Stewart’s intent to get Cramer fired, I think he merely wanted him to tell the truth, and admit that he made some HUGE mistakes.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:39 pmif there’s any ONE person that i wish Jim Cramer would pick a fight with…..it’s Jon Stewart.
thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you

“but it doesn’t matter, he’s (Cramer) a stock / investment advisor, he can do whatever he wants”. [...]“
April 14th, 2009 at 2:40 pmWhat a puss! It’s over, dude. Move on.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:40 pmAs I recall, during the Stewart interview, Cramer was not claiming that he was ambushed. In fact, when presented with the videotape, Cramer was meek, shocked that he was caught. Now that Cramer has had time to think about it, he’s outraged and claims that he was ambushed. Jim Cramer represents all that’s wrong with Wall Street. It’s an ego problem. He thinks he’s too savy, too smart, too cocky, too connected to be held accountable. He thought he was bulletproof.

April 14th, 2009 at 2:41 pmWaitaminnit, Jim — you’re claiming that Stewart promised “no clips”? Are you claiming that he LIED? Hmmm…you may have grounds for a lawsuit. Are you going to go that route?
No — apparently you’re going to tell everybody and anybody how unfairly you were treated, when what you really need to do is suck it up, learn from the experience, and be ready for the next battle in your life.
Stewart had been lobbing criticisms of CNBC in general and you in particular for several days before your interview. Did you really think it was going to be a puff piece interview? And you claim HE was naive!
Stewart had clips of you, exposing your lies and your hypocrisy. If you don’t like it when people do that, I’d suggest that you don’t say anything on camera you’re not prepared to stand behind and back up. The best way to avoid embarrassing clips is not to make any.
Stewart did his homework before your interview. Why didn’t you? You were so unprepared it was pathetic. Learn from this. And have your ducks in a row next time.
Oh, and one other thing. If you have some legitimate and specific criticism of what Stewart said during the interview, or if you have any rebuttal of any points he made, let us hear it. But so far we haven’t heard anything from you except general whining about an “ambush”. And this just makes you look like a weenie.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:42 pmWhen will Cramer get another shtick? It is highly humorous to see an investment advisor with his sleeves rolled up, like he’s about to fix the copier, or something. If he tried being a blue collar worker, he’d last about ten minutes, before saying “it’s too hot/loud/dangerous,” and then head back to the air-conditioned comfort of his office.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pmSomebody call the whaaaambulance, Cramer’s cracking up.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:45 pmFor crying out loud, get over it.
It wasn’t Stewart,s fault you could not give a rational answer to anything he asked. It is just that your used to shooting off your mouth about things you don’t understand, to people who know as little as you do.
Your organization set you up as an expert. You go online promoting what your told to promote. And you have done it for so long and never had to answer for the opinions you give. You are no expert. All Stewart did was point that out.

April 14th, 2009 at 2:50 pmIf he went on The Daily Show expecting anything else, then this guy was born in a barrell and just let out.
I still find it incredible that anyone ever took this man seriously about anything at all.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:51 pmIs it a bad thing when someone like Kramer, who’s supposed to be this Wall Street whiz and can instantly respond to anything thrown at him on the floor of the stock exchange, gets rattled by a comedian?
April 14th, 2009 at 2:52 pmThat the Man Cramer) still has his “show” is absolutely incredible to me. After his performance the last six months, followed by the Steuart fiasco, who in their right mind would listen to any financial “advice” this man would offer??
April 14th, 2009 at 2:53 pmThankyou Spencers Mom for pointing that out, i just voted, the F grade is up to 45%. Obviously wingnuts are hitting it hard.
April 14th, 2009 at 2:55 pmTHAT was an ambush? Did Jon turn off Cramer’s mic (Billo’s favorite trick)? Did he rant and yell at poor lil’ Jimmy? No, he just presented the facts along with his personal insight and let the truth drip all over that screaming wack job.
Anyone who goes on with Stewart or Colbert and think they are ‘just comedians’ will get their arse handed to them in a brown paper sack.
Heh Heh
April 14th, 2009 at 2:56 pmCramer was too busy playing suck up “You’re right John.” “We’re in the same boat John.” etc to actually talk about the issues. He kept bringing it back to “TV is hard to do. We try.”
Nonsense. Like all these CEOs he should get the boot…

April 14th, 2009 at 3:01 pmCramer – you deserved every word and more.
Grow up you frickin’ baby – time to move on. Maybe you can become the better person you obviously need to be. I’m sorry it took Stewart to point out the deficiencies – but you were coasting along at full mediocre and the guy has done you a favor and someday you might realize it. Unless you’re too small-minded that is.

Let it go, gang.
This is the Information Age and your side can’t compete.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:05 pmJim Cramer: “Waaaa!! Jon is such a meanie. Waaaa!!”
April 14th, 2009 at 3:07 pmYou humiliated yourself, Cramer. What the f. Are you a sociopath too. Can’t take responsibility for your actions?

April 14th, 2009 at 3:18 pm“Was it a fair fight?”
Nope. Jon is a lot smarter than you. If you wanted a fair fight you should have accepted an invitation to a Faux program.
Or from a second grader at PS 112.

April 14th, 2009 at 3:22 pmAh, I think I get it now. It’s no longer cool to blame Clinton. We now have to blame Stewart.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:27 pmSorry, Cramer, but when you agree to come on someone’s show after he just EMASCULATED you and you sit in front of him 1:1 with your head down admitting your foolishness … THAT IS NOT AN AMBUSH.
Bill O’Reilly’s girly producers sneaking up on someone out of the blue … THAT IS AN AMBUSH
April 14th, 2009 at 3:28 pmHis goal was just to humiliate and destroy me…
….sorta like you did to everyone who took your investing advice, uh?
April 14th, 2009 at 3:30 pmFace it, Jim – You got punked (using your own words against you) by a comedian.
Welcome to Norm Coleman!
BOOOO-YAH!
April 14th, 2009 at 3:32 pmWhat an awesome strategy — defining the win criteria for your opponent ex post facto.
A bully kicked my butt up, down and sideways in the schoolyard yesterday. Today, I’ll take to my soapbox in the cafeteria: “Jimbo’s goal was to knock all of my teeth out. Last I looked, I still have three teeth!”
April 14th, 2009 at 3:36 pmSomehow I’ve got to wonder if the whole “feud” aspect isn’t manufactured for the ratings (similar to, back during the writers’ strike when there was a feud with talk-show hosts that included a ninja scene).
After all, what did he think was gonna happen.
It would be like my being interviewed by Colbert for “Better know a district” and expect that it was going to be a straight-ball interview.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:48 pmO’Reilly said ambushing people was good journalism..but only, apparently, if its done paparazzi style, which he disapproves of.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:50 pmLet’s see here –
Jim Cramer accused Jon Stewart of misleading him.
Jon Stewart accused Jim Cramer of misleading the American people.
How does it feel to be on the receiving end of being misled, Jim? Imagine how screwed your viewers must have felt with their worthless Bear Stearns stock. You may feel ambushed and humiliated because of a guy on television, but you didn’t lose your life savings because of a guy on television.
You may want to reflect on this, instead of feeling sorry for yourself.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:51 pmIn Cramer’s defense — I can’t believe I’m saying this, but here it comes — I’d bet that he wasn’t the one who raised the Stewart encounter in his interview. He was almost certainly asked about it (and why would anyone else interview him this month, anyway?) so the fact that he had something to say about it isn’t really evidence of anything. What he said is certainly fair game, but I’m sure he didn’t sit down thinking “today I’ll say something about Stewart” — he does, as he pointed out, still have a TV show on which he could do that anytime he wanted (assuming his corporate overlords haven’t actually forbidden him).
April 14th, 2009 at 3:53 pmI wonder what he saw the last time he looked at the people that have taken his financial advice.
April 14th, 2009 at 3:55 pmBoo Hoo Cramer.
I’ll save my sympathy for the trusting fools who lost their savings by following your ‘expert’ advice.
Like every other loudmouth bully I’ve ever encountered, you’re nothing but a whiny punk when someone stands up to you.
By the way, YOU VOLUNTEERED for this beat down.
Crybaby!
April 14th, 2009 at 4:12 pmThis Stewart Cramer thing reminded me of when Stewart handed Tucker Carlson his ass way back when on “Crossfire” then Media Matters comes out with this piece:
Tucker Carlson’s Jerk Store
by Jamison Foser
In the Seinfeld episode “The Comeback,” George Costanza is embarrassed by his inability to think of a response to a co-worker who made fun of his overconsumption of shrimp cocktail by saying, “Hey George, the ocean called. They’re running out of shrimp.” George later thinks up what he believes is the ideal comeback, “Well, the Jerk Store called, and they’re running out of you,” and becomes obsessed with gaining an opportunity to use the line, eventually flying to Ohio in order to do so.
George’s long-planned zinger falls flat, however, when the co-worker responds, “What’s the difference? You’re their all-time best seller.” Flustered, and again unable to think of a witty response, George blurts out: “Oh yeah? Well I had sex with your wife!” — a jibe that blows up in his face when he is told the man’s wife is in a coma. The episode ends with George driving home, plotting yet another attempt to win the verbal battle.
Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson has been doing his best George Costanza impersonation for the past week, as he lashes out again and again at Jon Stewart, who humiliated Carlson on national television more than four years ago.
In October 2004, Stewart appeared on Crossfire, the long-running CNN debate show Carlson co-hosted at the time. It didn’t go well — either for Crossfire, which was canceled shortly thereafter, or for Carlson. Stewart said Crossfire, and cable shout-fests like it, were “hurting America.” Things went downhill from there, with Carlson telling Stewart he should be more aggressive in questioning politicians, and Stewart responding, “[I]t’s interesting to hear you talk about my responsibility. I didn’t realize that … the news organizations look to Comedy Central for their cues on integrity. … You’re on CNN. The show that leads into me is puppets making crank phone calls.” Exasperated, Carlson sarcastically told Stewart, “You need to get a job at a journalism school,” leading to the response: “You need to go to one.”
At that point, Carlson was reduced to pleading for mercy: “I thought you were going to be funny. Come on. Be funny.” But Stewart wasn’t finished, telling him, “No. No. I’m not going to be your monkey.”
It now seems Carlson has spent the past four years seething — and looking for an opportunity to finally put Stewart in his place. And with Stewart in the spotlight following his criticism of financial reporting at CNBC, Carlson pounced — or tried to.
Carlson began last Friday, telling Politico: “Jim Cramer may be sweaty and pathetic … but he’s not responsible for the current recession. … His real sin was attacking Obama’s economic policies. If he hadn’t done that, Stewart never would have gone after him. Stewart’s doing Obama’s bidding. It’s that simple.”

Funny stuff!
April 14th, 2009 at 4:16 pmI think Cramer feels he should have been rewarded more for taking the bullet.
Stewart was making trenchant powerful comments about thefinancial media in general and asking dangerous questions: why did everyone cheerlead like crazy up until the roof caved in?, for example. So Cramer took it on himself to set up a diversion: make it all about him personally, so that the MSM could spin it as a celebrity personality squabble, which they promptly did. Mission accomplished.
(If Stewart was actually out to get someone fired, it was that turd Santelli. Jon just used Cramer as an example,)
But the deflection didn’t quite work–because Jon really didn’t play that game. He didn’t administer a smackdown, really–he used the interview to push the larger questions more forcefully. And those general questions resonate with the public right about now.
this does make me wonder if Cramer is about to lose his job…

April 14th, 2009 at 4:40 pmCramer, didn’t your mommy ever teach you that if you keep picking at a scab that it will never heal? Stewart sliced and diced your stupid ass and you know it. So, put a band-aid on your bruised little ego, try to learn from the experience and get on with your life. Whining is for pussies.
April 14th, 2009 at 4:46 pmLooks like Cramer know as much about an ambush as he does about the stock market.
April 14th, 2009 at 4:46 pmYou got worked, Cramer. Stewart went up your right side and down your left. You had DAYS to put together your case, and you couldn’t, because there was no case you could make. I was impressed you actually showed up for the beating, though. Which makes your whining now even more pathetic to watch.
April 14th, 2009 at 7:45 pmIdiots like cramer just think it’s a tickle and giggle show. The bunch of idiots is all they are!
April 14th, 2009 at 8:18 pmHonestly, I think Stewart was hoping Cramer would stand up for himself. There were arguments to be made in his defense. Maybe he should have taken some time to prepare them instead of going on Morning Joe and Martha Stewart beforehand.
Instead, he just sat there sheepishly like a kid being called into the principal’s office, then complains about “unfair treatment” after it’s all over.
Pussy.
April 14th, 2009 at 8:52 pmSuch a thin skin for such an a$$hole.
Isn’t it always like that?
April 14th, 2009 at 11:39 pmYeah, I guess Kramer got his comeuppance; truth to power and all that schitck. Why Jim Cramer is about as big as big “gets,” even though on its bestest day ever, CNBC is hard pressed to find 500,000 viewers while “Comedy Central” regularly rakes in 2 million viewers or more.
And I’m absolutely sure the nasty little rumor that it wasn’t until Cramer started blaspheming against Obama that Stewart went into uncontrollable convulsions and started vomiting bile on the airwaves. All in jest for fun, of course.
