FreedomWorks Orchestrates ‘Grassroots’ Movements To Serve Dick Armey’s Corporate Clients

armey1.gifThinkProgress reported last week that corporate lobbyists are helping to orchestrate the anti-Obama tea party protests. These lobbying-run front groups, along with promotion help from Fox News, are organizing the tea parties by calling right-wing activists and asking them to organize. They are also coordinating conference calls among activists, writing press releases, providing sign ideas, building websites supporting the protests, and distributing talking points so that the protesters can stay on message.

Today, FreedomWork’s Adam Brandon responded to the criticism that its efforts to organize these anti-Obama protests are ‘astroturf,’ saying that the organization’s work in coordinating and planning the events would be akin to “MoveOn’s model.” However, MoveOn is not run by corporate lobbyists and is funded by actual grassroots activists. On the other hand, the leader of FreedomWorks, Dick Armey, who is ranked as one of DC’s top “hired guns,” is a corporate lobbyist with a history of directing FreedomWorks to support the goals of his lobbying clients. For example:

– Armey’s FreedomWorks is actively organizing against health care reform. Indeed, Armey’s lobbying firm represents pharmaceutical companies, such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, that oppose comparative effectiveness research in the health reform plan because such a program may cut into revenue for branded drugs.

– Armey’s lobbying firm represents the trade group for the life insurance industry. Indeed, FreedomWorks mobilizes its members for deregulated life insurance reform.

– Currently, FreedomWorks is focusing their energy activism on supporting the status quo reliance on fossil fuels. In addition to working for various domestic oil companies with a vested interest in opposing change, Armey’s lobbying firm represents Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE, on energy related issues such as maintaining the U.S.-UAE relationship where “U.S companies have played major roles in the development of UAE energy resources, which represent about 10 percent of global oil reserves.”

– In 2006, Armey’s lobbying firm represented the Senado de Republica (Mexican Senate) on “enhancing U.S.-Mexico relations,” and specifically on immigration policy. Curiously, during the same period, Armey’s Freedom Works stood out as one of the few right wing organizations to boldly support comprehensive immigration reform.

Last year, the Wall Street Journal exposed FreedomWorks for building “amateur-looking” websites to promote the lobbying interests of Armey.

FreedomWorks represents a top-down, corporate-friendly approach that has been the norm for conservative organizations for years. As Obama prepares to push to close corporate tax loopholes, reform health care, and transition to a clean energy economy, we can expect more corporate lobbyists to create astroturf protests to oppose change.

Update Armey's FreedomWorks gave Fox News the following statement today, acknowledging their role in organizing the movement:

We'd like to say we are one of the main driving forces, but we are not THE driving force behind the protests. We're mainly helping activists get in touch with each other.

Why would anyone, any working american support a group like Freedomworks. I’ve lived in Boston, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and small town in between.

I’ve meet thousands of people and only a few have I known who were uber rich.

All of the working people I’ve met were worried about tuiton, rent, mortgage and healthcare. Taxes never entered the conversation because taxes had nothing to do with our everyday living situation. Almost no one goes home and says “I wish I had an extra $10. but they took it out in taxes.”

Taxes aren’t what’s making us broke, it’s the policies of these fools at FreedomWorks and the fools that fall for their bullshi* hook, line and sinker.

I don’t give a f- one way or the other about these tea parties. Their stupid to begin with.

But, if they really are protesting taxes and government spending, then I don’t see why they deserve ridicule for that.

I mean, who here is in favor of the bailouts? That added immensely to the national debt. Now, every man woman and child in the US “owes” about $38,000 to the public debt right now. Every “taxpayer” owes about $146,000. Who here is willing or able to pony that up? And for what? Needless wars to make contractors rich, bailouts to keep bankers rich? Waste fraud and abuse? We’re all cool with that?

What I’m asking is what is the problem with protesting excessive government spending and taxation?

  11. barfly says:

When it was 12 billion per month in Iraq, these concerned folks didn’t even let out an anguished peep. When it was low bid, no cost contracts, they were silent. When Bush shoveled money into boondoggles like missile defense, they had other priorities that complaining about profligate government spending. And now that they are politically powerless, suddenly they are to be taken seriously about government spending? You are either a political neophyte, or a concern troll.

You’re caught in the two party paradigm. You think that every single one of these people is a Republican? Hey, even if every single one of them were Republican, maybe some of them are waking up and breaking out of the left/right paradigm. I’ve seen plenty of people doing that in the past couple of years.

Let me ask you in a different way. Do you agree with massive spending and taxation by the government? If not, then do you feel the need to protest it?

Because what I see are a bunch of ‘progressives’ appearing to be FOR massive spending and taxation. But it’s just because they see people protesting their glorious leaders. They get offended by that, just like the pro-Bush idiots got offended when people protested the war.

It’s not clear what’s being protested exactly. What constitutes “massive?” What percent of the GDP should be invested in America’s infrastructure, and how? Once you start considering those questions, disagreements become matters of nuts-and-bolts, and not overarching matters of belief.

Typical Liberal response, Ignore the question, bring up old presidents. Bush is not the president anymore, Obama is.

Not at all. After Dubya tanked the economy (the crash happened in September, you will recall), it was clear that temporary extra spending was the only way to dig ourselves out of it. The problem is that while tanking the economy, Dubya also ran up the deficit, leaving the next President behind the proverbial eight-ball.

I’m assuming that you had nothing to say about Dubya’s profligate deficits at the time. But all of a sudden now that somebody needs to use the deficit to get ourselves out of this mess, you’re all up in arms. It’s relevant.

It’s not just about a number, it’s about whether that number is necessary and what it will be used for.

The conservative plan is 300 BILLION more costly.

According to the Citizens For Tax Justice, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research and advocacy organization, the plan proposed by the Republicans in the House far exceeds the spend proposed by the President’s plan. CTJ compared the two plans and the GOP didn’t fair too well. After a week of criticising the president for the amount required under his plan, it turns out that the GOP’s plan spends significantly more, $300 billion more. The GOP does hypocrisy so well. Below are the highlights of the GOP plan that the House Republicans will announce on the steps of the Capitol today.

    * Over a fourth of taxpayers, mostly low-income families, would pay more in taxes under the House GOP plan than they would under the President’s plan

    * The richest one percent of taxpayers would pay $100,000 less, on average, under the House GOP plan than they would under the President’s plan.

    * The income tax proposals in the House GOP plan, which is presented as a fiscally responsible alternative to the President’s plan, would cost over $300 billion more than the Obama income tax cuts in 2011 alone

You’re getting warmer. But copy/pasting articles from McCain’s campaign website isn’t the same thing as making a point. What you should have done is explain the point more briefly in your own words, and provide a link to the article. I ain’t reading some crap you copy/pasted just because you can’t actually think of what to say for yourself. Some research would help too, as that article doesn’t seem to cite any other sources for its own claims.

    By the way, McCain lost.

Furthermore, now I can just post this in response. Obama pretty much automatically wins any argument regarding what he is or is not proposing for a tax structure. It’s like arguing with someone else about whether they like ice cream or not. You’d think you’d at least have gone and look up his actual proposal, instead of what his campaign opponent said his proposal was.

The NH Democrats are 100% funded by groups outside of NH, and even from outside the country… talk about not being grassroots! And the idiots in congress have never seen a tea bag before and are going crazy over the ones being mailed to them in protest. It’s really funny to watch Carol Shea-Porter who has an IQ of about 10…

If you get between a Democrat and other people’s money you will likely be killed for it. They will do anything to steal from those who worked to give it to those who don’t work or worse yet, as the worst president in history to his foreign banker friends who put him in office. Why do Democrats support people who are detrimental to their success? Not too bright.

Alejandro: The answer to your question is because Democrats are not too bright? Obama has fully tanked the economy and our debt will be in the QUADRILLIONS. Plus he has escalated the war effort and stepped up secret wiretapping worse than anything Bush ever did.

And you are right, there are NOT all Republicans at our party — and most do not support Obama’s WAR.

I find it very hypocritical that Obama is worse than Bush but you don’t hear peep. He congratulated the soldiers for winning the war in Iraq and liberating the people, but I guess the MSM did not hear about it? Amazing.

Face it all you duped zombie hypocrites — Obama is the new boss, WORSE THAN THE OLD BOSS, and he snowed you with his teleprompter skills. Reason he has the teleprompter is so he can do everything George Soros and Henry Kissinger (two Nazis) tell him to do and say. He can’t be without it. The markets were crashed on purpose to get the desired effect — our 401ks looted so the cabal of foreign bankers could be paid off, thanks to their puppet Obama. It’s worse than Chavez’s Venezuela!

He handed our sovereignty back to the Queen at the G20, and we are now in need of a new 1776. AND WE WILL PREVAIL to regain our freedom again, we promise you that.

  113. hanshiro the antlion says:

Attacking Obama’s Tax Plan With Basic Dishonesty

Greg Mankiw was quite impressed with a graph from Alex Brill and Alan Viard but Jonah Gelbach was not:

From what I can tell, the Brill-Viard piece, titled “The Folly of Obama’s Tax Plan”, is one of those screeds meant to confuse rather than inform … Now, when you see someone relying on a special case like a two-earner couple with two children, one of whom is a college freshman and the other is exactly 12 and receiving after-school care, you know there’s cherry-picking going on … To understand how deeply dishonest the Brill-Viard piece is, you need only recognize that each of these three examples is a case in which Obama’s plan increases the after-tax-and-transfer income available to the people at issue. The rest of their explanation involves Obama’s proposal to increase the maximum of the current Hope Scholarship Tax Credit for college from $1,800 to $4,000 while keeping the same phaseout range … Marginal tax rates rise under Obama’s plan in this cherry-picked example (assuming that Brill and Viard haven’t cooked the numbers themselves) because credits have to be phased out at higher incomes, or else everyone will receive them, making them much more expensive. This is hardly a new concept, and Greg Mankiw surely understands it well. If he and the AEI distortion machine wanted to have an honest debate on Obama’s tax plan, they could discuss its cost, or they could provide an honest argument over why they think the disincentive effects of higher marginal rates outweigh the benefits of increasing disposable income for lower and middle income folks. Instead, their argument boils down to making a big deal about the fact that disincentive effects….exist! That sort of observation won’t win you the Nobel prize. The key point that Brill and Viard neglect to note or discuss is that even in their cherry picked example, higher marginal tax rates bring along offsetting benefits to families with lower and middle incomes. If the families don’t change their behavior, their disposable income will be higher, not lower, under Obama’s plan. If they do change their behavior, then by revealed preference, these families will still be better off, since every supposedly nefarious change in the tax code that Brill and Viard mention is an expansion in generosity. Revealed preference says that you can’t be made worse off by having more options. This is a question of basic microeconomics. It’s also a question of basic honesty.

Which at least disqualifies it as a “protest” in the modern sense of the word. Furthermore, technically they were acting against a reduction in taxes on tea provided by the British East India Company, since it amounted to “dumping” tea on the market to undercut the competing Dutch product. That is, the central issue was not whether taxes were lower or higher, but it was used to make the case that the Colonies should have a representative say in what the tax policy would be and why. Which we do today. Losing an election is not the same thing as lacking representation.

AFP reports:

Hungary’s financial supervisory watchdog announced Friday it had slapped a 1.6-million-euro fine on an investment fund founded by US billionaire George Soros, for manipulating the market.

The PSzAF “is imposing a 489-million-forint fine on Soros Fund Management LLC… for violating the rules regarding the illegal manipulation of financial markets,” the supervisory authority said in a statement on its Internet site.

This is not the first time Soros has been fined for illegal market manipulation. That he is the most significant financial backer of the American left should serve as a clarion call to Americans. Do not trust this man.”

    Huh… ChicagoTeaParty.com, registered in August 2008…

Gee… a website named “ChicagoTeaParty.Com”, organized SIX MONTHS EARLIER.

ChicagoTeaParty.com was just one part of a larger network of Republican sleeper-cell-blogs set up over the course of the past few months, all of them tied to a shady rightwing advocacy group coincidentally named the “Sam Adams Alliance,” whose backers have until now been kept hidden from public. Cached google records that we discovered show that the Sam Adams Alliance took pains to scrub its deep links to the Koch family money as well as the fake-grassroots “tea party” protests going on today. All of these roads ultimately lead back to a more notorious rightwing advocacy group, FreedomWorks, a powerful PR organization headed by former Republican House Majority leader Dick Armey and funded by Koch money.

Capitalism was raised as the hope for the underclass, when all it ever was, is the futile attempt to think you had a fighting chance at scrambling and foraging for the few crumbs the ultra-elite, Rothechilds of the world would happen to allow to fall to the ground.

Capitalism is Totalitarianism in its truest form. The hopeful endpoint of Capitalism is a monopoly on your market, ergo totalitarisnism.

Capitalism should NEVER have been allowed to thrive anywhere in the world.

I like drinking tea, so I think I’ll go out and try and find the 10 or 20 idiots who show up and get myself some free tea. I can just get a box with a sign that says “drop tea bags here” and I should be set for months. snark…

  219. DallasNE says:

The face of the Republican Party has become the washed up Dick Armey and Newt Gingrich with the mouthpieces being Rush Limbaugh and Glen Beck. Oh, and for laughs there is the imploding Sarah Palin. What a lineup. Who, in their right mind, can identify with that group of losers?

  220. Perry logan says:

Of course, there are a few real right-wing grassroots movements. They are always small, destructive, and criminal, viz: militias, white separatists, white supremacists, Neo-Nazis, anti-abortion murder and terrorism, mass purchase of firearms, hate crimes against gays and Hispanics.

Well, I see Fox is already blaming “poor weather” and “permit problems” for the low turn out so far ;)

  223. labman57 says:

The tea parties would have more credibility if the participants were not so ignorant about the merits of their cause. It would be like people protesting “illegal aliens” by holding up signs that read “Martians go home!”.

    of kooks excuse yet?

    :\

  225. labman57 says:

One of the persistent themes being voiced at the tea parties is the notion of “taxation without representation”, a concept borrowed from the original Boston Tea Party.

However, we just had an election during which every adult citizen had the opportunity to vote. So what these folks are really complaining about is that their candidate(s) LOST!

This does not invalidate the election, people. All it means is that you are SORE LOSERS. Suck it up and try again in 2010.
