Gov. Rick Perry: Texas might have to secede.

perry-finger1.jpgGov. Rick Perry (R-TX) was one of the dozens of Republican lawmakers who are addressing the anti-Obama tea parties today. He told the crowd he didn’t believe they were all “right-wing extremists,” as others had sought to portray them. “But if you are, I’m with you!” he shouted. After, he told reporters that Texas might have to secede from the union:

Perry told reporters following his speech that Texans might get so frustrated with the government they would want to secede from the union.

“There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that.”

Earlier this week, Perry signed onto a nonbinding resolution claiming the federal government had overstepped its Constitutional authority. “I believe the federal government has become oppressive. I believe it’s become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state,” Perry declared.

  7. Uosdwis says:

Texas USED to be sort of alright (I grew up there until 1979), but, goddamn, it has been ruined by Karl Rove and George Bush and Rick Perry and Tom Delay and Phil Gramm and every other Repubican. Now, I don’t think I will ever set foot there again, unless they regain their senses. Else, fine, cut ‘em loose- but you get NO GOVERNMENT HELP in the next hurricane. Try to handle them with no state income tax..

  8. P.D. says:

OK. The Repugs can have the South and will take the progressive North. Sounds like a deal. After 2004, I seriously considered going to Canada. Kind of hard to do when you’re broke.

  10. J. Fred Smug says:

Hey Rick, I hope that this is a PROMISE and not just an idle threat. Please let me know if you need any financial help with this – I’d love to contribute to such an effort. Texas = home of Tom DeLay and George W. Bush. You’d better secede the hell out of my country!

  12. Robert M. says:

    Let ‘em go.

Then we can turn around and bill Texas for the cost of protecting the Middle East investments of Texas oil men with the treasure of taxpaying Citizens and the blood of the U.S. Military.

    Holy crap.

That’s the best news I’ve ever heard! Let all the Repugnicans move to Texas and secede. We’ll name it Traitorland. Then we’ll wall it off and start an organization called the Second-Men to shoot any illegal immigration over the border!

    Heheh. I’m kidding!

  23. nofltwlt says:

All of you Texans who wish to secede along with Rick Perry, just pack up a bag and walk across the border. Leave those who do not agree with you and Rick Perry right where they wish to be.

  24. lpeggy says:

Didn’t the same government they want to secede from…give them federal aid for Hurricane Ike?

  25. pastcaring ceratopogonidae says:

No no no no….the headline is wrong…Bush’s old lt. gov. Perry can’t think…He meant to say “Texass might have to succeed.”

As in, it might have to actually stop taking out more federal tax dollars than it pays in.

OTOH Rick Perry is just flat out dumb. I’ll paraphrase an oft used idiom here:

You can take a bore to school but you can’t make him think.

  26. Marie says:

Fine, Perry. Go away. Don’t come calling when the next hurricane hits – or when you want to build your fence around your border.
Between Perry and Palin – they are both demagogues, panderers and politicians in the worst sense. No hint of working with others, cooperation on legislation, no, no, no.

Just strut and swagger, appeal to your least common denominator — the ones who don’t think straight — and collect their votes. That’s all you want anyway. Permanent power.

When you go away, do you promise to take George Bush – the one who created this abysmal disaster with you, and his ridiculous library/museum — never to be seen or heard from again?

  30. 1st Republic 14th Star says:

Perry’s complaint might seem more credible if he hadn’t supported the administration of George W. Bush. Election stealing, bad faith prosecutions of political opponents, warrantless wiretapping, sneak and peek searches, rendition, and American citizens held as enemy combatants? No problem. 10 weeks later, when those abuses are being rolled back, Perry thinks we’re facing the threat of fascism? The hypocrisy is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Oh, one condition: they MUST take Fox with them as their State News Network.

They jsut can’t stand that can they.
I do believe they view Barack Obama like Clevon Little.

Anyone care to venture a guess how Faux News might have greeted such a suggestion from, say Bernie Sanders regarding Vermont in 2004?

Think the word “treason” might have been bandied about?

  48. Wayne says:

Sorry Perry, but Texas lost the right to secede when it rejoined the Union after seceding during the Civil war.

Also a Supreme Court case decided sucession in 1869,Chief Justice Salmon Chase, writing the majority opinion of the 5-3 decision, stated that the Union is “composed of indestructible states,” and established on behalf of the high court of the land that secession is illegal.

Too bad Republicans are so f-king stupid.

  49. KingCranky says:

As a resident of the red-headed stepchild part of Texas, El Paso-the GOP will NEVER be a majority party in this city-I don’t blame anyone for being upset with Perry, but he won’t be in a position as the state’s figurehead past the foreseeable future, he’s gonna get his clock cleaned by fellow GOP slug Kay Bailey Hutchison in the Republican primary next year.

Texas is also trending bluer with every election, as the Dems are just three seats away from gaining the majority in the House.

And unlike far too many of the Dems on Capitol Hill, who wet themselves in terror at the thought of the Repubs saying mean things about them, the Dems here in Texas are more willing to scrap and fight and make the GOP earn it’s victories, rather than just rolling over on far too active a basis.

What’s gonna really hurt Gov. Goodhair in the GOP primary is that voters in one party can cross over and vote in another party’s primary, but they wouldn’t be able to vote in their own party’s primary if they crossover vote.

    Something else to consider.

It was Tom DeLay’s most audacious stunt, the redistricting BS that resulted in an additional 5 GOP seats, which led to his indictment, and the end of his political career.

And that comment about college football keeping Texas from seceding was dead on target, football’s the only thing as loved & worshiped as guns in this state.

  50. ElBruce says:

Its not a single party state with 100% Republicans. Perry is a figgerhaid.

And when their district gerrymandering expires, they’re toast. It’s the only thing that’s been propping them up all this time. The insane Texas districting scheme is the most artificial travesty of Democracy in the modern world. If any other country set up their voting districts like that, we wouldn’t even call them a democracy.

  51. STL Cynic says:

I think Rick Perry should understand that we’ll take all of our arms and munitions before they declare their autonomy. We will take all property of the Federal Government and we won’t lift a hand to help them when Mexico attacks their arrogant a$$es. If they think they’re over-taxed, let them pay for their own roads. We’ll refuse to honor their requests for Social Security and Medicare. The US will come out way ahead in this transaction.

They have low taxes and no state income tax and they are still thriving as a state while liberal-democrat-run states like California and New York are taxing their citizens to death and still cannot pay the bills.

Moreover, corporations and their highly skilled workers are fleeing states like California and New York because of high tax and spend policies.

HUH, imagine that. Texas has the oil and Texas has the majority of Corporate head quarters in the US. Perhaps Obama could learn from Texas.

If Texas succeeds, Half of Americans will flock to move there leaving the welfare state whiners behind. How will you feed yourselves when the government hand has no more to give?

If Texas succeeds i’d place my bet on multiple southern states following suit. Let us not forget that the southern states own the oil in the ground and the gulf. Obama’s little social experiment would be brought to its knees when there is no one left to tax.

Most states like California and New York can’t even balance a budget but simply force the people to pay higher taxes to foot the bill.

A: No such provision is found in the current Texas Constitution[1](adopted in 1876) or the terms of annexation.[2] However, it does state (in Article 1, Section 1) that “Texas is a free and independent State, subject only to the Constitution of the United States…” (note that it does not state “…subject to the President of the United States…” or “…subject to the Congress of the United States…” or “…subject to the collective will of one or more of the other States…”)

Neither the Texas Constitution, nor the Constitution of the united States, explicitly or implicitly disallows the secession of Texas (or any other “free and independent State”) from the United States. Joining the “Union” was ever and always voluntary, rendering voluntary withdrawal an equally lawful and viable option (regardless of what any self-appointed academic, media, or government “experts”—including Abraham Lincoln himself—may have ever said).

Both the original (1836) and the current (1876) Texas Constitutions also state that “All political power is inherent in the people … they have at all times the inalienable right to alter their government in such manner as they might think proper.”

Likewise, each of the united States is “united” with the others explicitly on the principle that “governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed” and “whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends [i.e., protecting life, liberty, and property], it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government” and “when a long train of abuses and usurpations…evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.” [3]

Sure Texas is known as one of the 50 states now, but it is the ONLY one that actually can secede legally, at least by the common definition.

Tim, you seem to be under the misconception that Texas’s former status as a nation (one that went widely unrecognized at the time) somehow affects Texas’s current abilities as one of the states of the USA. It ain’t so, bro. Not sure where you got this idea.

Texas is equal under the law to all other states in the union, per the US Constitution. Again, if you know of some magical source that states otherwise, please post us a link.

The president was given the benefit of the doubt, he was our president. As it turns out Bush squandered this moment and many American lives and destroyed a sovereign country.
President Obama has put forth a plan to restart an economy that was damaged. He is concerned about the welfare of people.
I believe he is sincere about a love of country and of solving our problems. Better than half of this country is willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt.
What is so hard for the Republican Party to reciprocate, especially in this time of need? Your party is stretching the argument beyond reasonable. You may very well pay for this at the voting booth. This is not a country of extremists, and the country has always voted that way.
You Governor Perry have become a well paid hoar, prostituting yourself for a set of values that are UN American.

Except the part in the actual Texas Constitution doesn’t say anything about secession, either. It does state that it is “subject only to the Constitution of the Unites States,” which document provides for all 3 branches of government, making all 3 branches of government sovereign to it.

Again, it does not say that Texas gets to secede later. It does not say this, nor is that logically implied from anything that it does say. Your thesis is nothing more than utter fantasy.

However, if you wish to fight a civil war to settle the matter, we’ll be more than happy to. Us true American patriots know how to deal with treasonous seditionists like yourself.

    Okay…

    Amendment 10
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

So, for anything the Federal Government doesn’t pass a law on, the states or individuals get to decide. Sorry, that doesn’t say what you want it to say. On your side: a bunch of uneducated wackjobs. On my side: over two centuries of Supreme Court rulings. I win. You suck.

    .

    Tim Vaculik Says:

There is nothing seditious at all about seceding from the union, my friend.

    Let’s check:

    se?di?tion
    /s??d???n/ [si-dish-uhn]
    –noun
    1. incitement of discontent or rebellion against a government.
    2. any action, esp. in speech or writing, promoting such discontent or rebellion.
    3. Archaic. rebellious disorder.

    Or, this:

Sedition is a term of law which refers to covert conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority as tending toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interests of sedition.

I believe the last time it was an open question as to whether seceding from the United States of America constituted sedition, we settled it through violence. Now you claim, yet again, that seceding is not seditious. I claim that it is. You give no reasoning for your claim whatsoever. I stand on history and legal precedent. If you wish to re-settle the matter the same way again, I’m more than willing to go there.

Freedom isn’t free, mofo. It costs a buck or five.

Perry’s not fooling anyone (or at least, not anyone who still has two functional brain cells to rub together). 250. Democrat Soldier says:

Funny how Gov. Perry coudln’t bring himself to say these words when Fmr. Pres. Bush was increasing the size of Federal government to the largest seen in decades. It seems it was the excessive “intrusion” of the Federal Government under Fmr. Pres. Bush that is the culprit, and nobody has allowed Pres. Obama time to decrease that excessive “intrusion” before they all started to b!t@# like whiney conservatives.

  251. lefty says:

    Please f#@%ing go! Please!

What a bunch of crybabies. They lose a couple of elections and they want to leave the Union. Grow up.

    http://www.texassecede.com/Texas%20Secession%20Facts.pdf

The majority of Texans, do not want to secede. The bandwagon attack of all Texans by the majority of you is appauling to witness as a citizen of a supposedly UNITED states. Most of you are using explatives and incompletel grammer. you sound as ignorant as you make Texans seem.

The Texas ecomony IS very stable. We do not take nearly as much Ferderal aid and assistance as other states and in fact (though perry has never been my choice for the office of Gov), Perry tried to decline the stimuls money stating that it would come with too many federal strings and would not be a good deal in the long run for our state. The feds FORCED our state to take money, which has gotten a lot fot his mess fired up.

As for the digs on Federal aid with Hurricane Ike. The government swooped in to forgo a repeat lashing at their incompetence with Hurricane Katrina. We did not petition them for assistance and have already made public declarations that we will not accept federal assistance in the face of another hurricane. Texans take pride in being able to take care of themselves. And in fact, lets not forget that we sent more aid immediately following Hurricane katrina than the federal government did initially. We harbored the refugees from New Orleans in the aftermath as well.

You can all critizize Texas and continue to believe that we are all ignorant Bush Supporters, but that is not the truth. I hated the Bush administration, as did many of my friends and family. We were decieved and misled just like the rest of the country. But, that doesn’t mean that the new administration is going to be a “savior to the union.” Socialism is not democracy….

Texans as a whole are seeking to re-establish the true intent of the U.S. Constitution in which each state is soveriegn and the people govern. We are ALL made up of the UNITED STATED OF AMERICA, not the States Governed By Washington.

God Bless America, and God Bless TEXAS.

Damn I missed all the other posters claiming to be perfect. Nor did I see any posters claiming that all Texans think the same. You are right, you are not perfect. The fact is that the Governor of Texas said:

“There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that.”

The attacks on the President and the United States by teabaggers is extremely hypocritical coming from a group that called any Bush criticism anti-american.

  261. Akio says:

This really says alot about Gov. Rick Perry’s character. When the going gets tough, RUN.

And who are any of you to call anyone who attacks the policies of this president as being un-american. Aren’t you the same people who attacked Bush?

This is why I am now an independent. I didn’t like Bush and I don’t like Obama. Why blindly follow any man or party. Neither side is right!

Did I say that or did I point out that the teabaggers said that?

I completely agree with you. I don’t like politicians period. Given the choice of McCain (or Bush) and Obama, given what I can gather from each candidate and what they stand for, I picked Obama. And I still would.

  264. texasproud2009 says:

Oh one more thing for “livelongandprosper”

You apparenlty don’t truly believe in your own screen name. Obama claims to want everyone to prosper, but only to certain degree. LOL. if you become to prosperous, he will take your money and give it someone on welfare.

Are you one those who actually think he will pay your mortgage?

Do you agree with Geitner that the government should have the right to force a CEO to resign from his own company?

Does the government have the right to step into your house and tell you how to balance your check book, watch you while you sleep, and tell you how to think?

Government is overstepping… plain and simple.

  265. Akio says:

    @Powkat

The South is going to secede? Again? Are they bringing back slavery, too?

I bet if you poll the teabaggers, you’ll find a substantial number who think that the outcome of last November’s election clearly shows that getting rid of slavery was a very bad idea.

  269. Scott McNamara says:

Texas doesn’t have the right to secede: Neither did the 13 colonies, the founding fathers were traitors to the British crown.

Texas will be conquered by Mexico: Mexico can’t conquer Chiapas or clamp down on the cartels for that matter, I think we’ll hold our own should our Mexican friends cross the Rio Grande in anger.

I’m really digging all the Texas hate in this thread from so called enlightened progressives especially the stuff regarding George Bush, that boy is a Connecticut yankee who couldn’t wipe his ass without his daddy’s help, he is not a reflection of Texas as a whole.

When we leave, and it’s only a matter of time at this rate, you’ll miss our industries, natural resources and infrastructure. Texas is home to 58 of the Forbes top 500 companies, the port of Houston is the second largest in the country. Texas’ oil and gas industry leads the nation in the number of active land rigs (912 as of July ‘08), which is about 50 percent of the U.S. total. Texas is also number one in crude oil refining capacity (4,509,196 barrels/day).

I look forward to all you mean spirited, ‘enlightened’ yankees paying out the nose for your heating oil, gasoline and petroleum products while looking down on us poor, backward, ignorant Texans.

  272. Scott McNamara says:

    Xisithrus,

Cervical cancer is a terrible disease, and I’d support the initiative if the vaccine was a known quantity. But would you really want to require the administration of a new (and relatively expensive) vaccine to children when possible long term consequences are unknown?

    STL Cynic Says:
I think Rick Perry should understand that we’ll take all of our arms and munitions before they declare their autonomy. We will take all property of the Federal Government and we won’t lift a hand to help them when Mexico attacks their arrogant a$$es. If they think they’re over-taxed, let them pay for their own roads. We’ll refuse to honor their requests for Social Security and Medicare. The US will come out way ahead in this transaction.

First off, Your UNITES STATES LAW States, possession is 9/10th the law. Try and take em, the US might have another war on there hands. I really do hope Texas becomes Independant. Like I said, Texas would have NO RESTRICTIONS on kickin anyones a$$, including, Mexico, which im a proud Mexican as well. Mexico can try, but after several of there cities are blown to hell they’ll call it off. Listen Mexicos got its own shit to worry about, and since Texas would be Independent from the Fed, and all that we can the secure the boarders properly. Another thing, whos to say that Mexico doesnt allie-up against America, or just allow Mexicans to wonder freely over to America, id help em, what are you going to do about it? not a thing, so before you go saying that Mexico will go to war with Texas, remember most of us are, already Mexican!

  274. Texas Aggie says:

“I believe the federal government has become oppressive. You want oppressive? I’ll give you oppressive.”

Thanks, ricky, but you’ve already given us oppressive. You are the one who decided that poor kids in Texas didn’t need SCHIP. You are the one who has put all the information being collected on Texans under your office’s control instead of the police. You are the one who decided to make Texas the most polluted state in the country. You are the one who decided that contaminating drinking water in South Texas with uranium mining waste is perfectly ok. You are the one who decided that Texans who qualified for Food Stamps should have no way to sign up for them. You are the one who decided that Texans should pay more than three times as much for their electricity as they used to. You were the one who decided that insurance companies should be allowed to screw over Texans.

If you want a running commentary on the way ricky boy and his moneybag supporters have been screwing over average Texans, go to the Texas Observer. It’s enough to make you wonder if this guy isn’t a Nazi government official who fled Germany after the war.

  275. Texas Aggie says:

The background of the “required” HPV vaccinations is that the vaccine is made by Merck and Merck had donated tons of money to Perry’s last campaign for governor. This decision was pay back for their investment in Perry’s career.

  276. Texas Aggie says:

I keep reading about “socialism”, but none of the people whining about it give any indication that they even begin to understand the concept. It’s like a thousand Kevin James’ going on with a talking point hoping that they’ll never be asked to explain what they’re talking about.

As for Texans backing ricky boy, remember that he got around 36% of the vote in the last election. And remember that all the major metropolitan areas and the Valley went blue, and that Democrats are within one vote of parity in the State government.

The ones making all the noise thumping their chests and beating on the ground with clubs are mainly the right wing bible thumpers whose whole outlook on life is one of belief rather than reality and knowledge. They are the ones who get all excited about slogans without actually knowing what they are talking about. See “socialism” above.

First off, i think its funny that you feel that the Texas economy will fail when it seems that its the only surviving.

Secondly, I doubt that the companies will move, reason is because with them there the economy will be stable firstly as i said before, and also because there law that states that we can fire someone nor does it say that we can ‘pressure’ someone into an early retirement. So with Texas staying out of the companies business and the Fed’s taking total control over the US I see them running to us. But dont worry, well send all the immigrants to the US just like they were trying to before.

  283. tankapples says:

Well when you try and figure out another way to make us feel bad for leaving ill be here mikala.

Dont worry I bet we’d still be friends with the US, just clean-up your whole economy crisis over there and well think about returning your call…

  284. tankapples says:

Also, about the oil rigging, yeah there might be some stuff from the company thats within the US, thats not the issue, the issue is that, TEXAS itself, not combined with all the oil companies assests else where. Texas, itself produces half of the US oil that it needs daily.

  285. Undead_Gus_Hall says:

  286. Scott McNamara says:

    Mikala,

If you reread my statement you’ll notice I’m talking about oil rigs located within the territorial boundaries of Texas, not those offshore rigs located in the Gulf of Mexico or inside other states. An independent Texas would have territorial waters and the right to those natural resources located therein.

As for those corporations leaving, that’s a possibility but quite a few of those corporations are the sort that can’t just pack up and move overnight such as shipping, petroleum extraction and refinement, manufacturing, etc.

  287. hendrix says:

Oh man its hilarious reading some of these boneheaded statements calling Texans unpatriotic, treasonous, and what have you. You are complete fools. We believe in the constitution. Remember that piece of paper that started our country to greatness? Yea, the US government no longer gives a rats ass over that.
And guess what, we can legally leave the union. LEGALLY.
Before you say something idiotic, learn your history.

TEXAS was its own country (Republic of Texas). The USA begged us to join, yes begged, I’m sorry if that offends you but we have plenty of resources and land, which the USA wanted. Texas DID NOT want to be a part of the union. The USA begged and finally Texas did join, BUT AFTER we got a few clauses: The right to fly our flag as high as the USA flag (we are the only ones who can do that) and the right to secede the union, and continue being an independent REPUBLIC (we are also the only ones who can do that, and the only ones who apparently know and understand what a republic is).

So continue acting completely ignorant over these issues. You’re just showing jealously, misjudgment, and idiocy, and it only makes me hope for secession even more.

Why would we want to stay apart of this over-sized encroaching government any longer? We have our own natural resources and our own power grid. We don’t need the USA, they always needed us.

But… I do love the USA. What is happening right now is sad, I would rather things turn around and Texas stay in the Union. But with people like you in the general public and running our country, I don’t think there is any hope for that.

Wake up, READ. Don’t create you’re world view off of anything you see on TV, it all has agendas, and all corrupted. Read a god damn book and learn, work your brain, and open your eyes.

So, have fun, while we accept the responsibility of creating the only legitimate republic and democracy in the world.

  288. hendrix says:

AND ALSO: I am not a republican or democrat. I hate both parties, and believe both generally want the same thing. The past four presidents have all pushed the same agendas, and it makes me feel that each successor is taught by the previous president before they come into office.

I also have never liked Rick Perry one bit. I’m from Dallas in case you couldn’t figure it out. Oh we also have the best football team in the country… but that’s nor here or there. I don’t believe Rick Perry is a good governor, and believed that he was going to lead us down the same road as Obama, Bush, Clinton, and Bush 1.

This is the FIRST time I have liked one thing he said. He didn’t come out and say we were going to secede either, he just gave something for Obama to think about.

    Way to go Rick.

  290. hendrix says:

    Oh and one more thing.
George Bush was ***NOT*** born in Texas. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut. The University of Texas declined his application, and he went up North to Yale.

HE IS NOT A TEXAN. IS NOT. He has some fascination with us and pretends to move brush whenever he can to prove it. He is now hiding in Dallas, hoping we won’t know hes there but soon we will kick his ass out.

STOP FIGHTING FOR YOUR SIDE. DEMOCRAT/REPUBLICAN its always the same thing. Red is in power blue hates everything. Blue is in power red hates everything. I agree this is happening, but all the people protesting and believing in America don’t care about each other political sides.

This is about the government. WHOEVER is in power. I was against Bush and now I’m against Obama. He’s doing the same things Bush did… So wake up and look around. READ READ READ READ READ.

We won’t get much $$$ for it, what with all those thieves, liars, and radicals calling it home, but we’ll get enough to finally put up a fence making sure those nuts can’t sneak back in. 295. LORDDOLOZA says:

Have any of you read the Declaration of Independence?…The constitution?…The 10th Amendment for starters? That great document gives any state the right to leave the Union.
The 10th Amendment…The powers not delegated to the United States by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people. That is what this is about…no where in the Constitution does it grant Obama or any other presidents the powers to do what he is doing and what others have done over at least the past 80 years. We believe in the Constitution and that’s why our State Constitution almost exact copy. Texas is the only state that entered the Union in a Treaty not an annexation. Texas was a free and Independent State when it enter the Union and that alone give Texas the right to leave anytime it wants to… and if you disagree then you don’t believe in the Declaration of Independence because that’s what our founding fathers did and that is what Texans are doing. Over thirty States have passed resolutions expressing the tyrannical behavior of this government…it no longer follows the constitution, or have you all forgotten We the people for the people by the people. By the powers granted in the Constitution the people have all the power and government are granted rights by the people not government gives you rights…We have the rights not them, the are our servants. Since the government chooses to follow the Constitution we no longer recognize them as a rightful government and we want out. And why do you all care if Texas leave…you dont like us so let us go and we will live peacefully and watch you destroy your own country by socializing it.

I was born and raised in Texas, although I’ve spent a lot of time in other states and countries in my life. I’m a registered independent voter, but I vote Democratic 90% of the time. I’m often called a socialist by my right-wing friends, although that’s not true.
There are a lot of great people in Texas. Unfortunately, there is also a sizeable faction who like to speak first and think later. Or even worse, not think at all. These people are also very vocal.
By my best estimates, I think the Texas I.Q.(Idiot Quotient) is about 20-25% of the overall population. That leaves a lot of sensible, rational people. Rick Perry knows we can’t secede, he’s just grasping at straws. He recieved 39% of the popular vote last time. He’s done.
I am an American first, and I’m embarassed by this idiot. Please don’t judge us all by his irresponsible behavior. Peace.

  301. tevish says:

    jerseyboyblue Says:

History repeats itself. Remember what happened the last time a state tried to secede, Governor.

Indeed. The Confederacy decided it would be fun to attack a union held fort and started a war. Sometimes people tend to forget the little details such as who started what war.

And anyways if Texas did leave the union, as is their right, and the US attacked then what do you suppose would happen? This would be the second time in recent years that the US blatantly attacked another country for no good reason. How long would it be before the UN declares the United States a global threat?

That crap could start another world war, and this time the oppressors would be us, not the Germans.

  302. tevish says:

Hmm, I feel I must admit a mistake. As it seems, in the 1868 case of Texas vs. White the United States Supreme Court ruled that secession was illegal. The only way a state could leave the union was “through revolution, or consent of the States”.

So, where does this leave Texas? Well, let’s look at it in both ways, either the guy is a)completely bananas as most of you suspect, or b)it’s a scare tactic to try to get the government to reform.

    a) The guy’s two fries short of a happy meal. Ok, protest. Get him the heck outta office. If we wanna fix this country it would start by getting the idiots out of office. This isn’t unique to Republicans. This “idiot phenomenon” isn’t unique to Republicans. I know plenty of Democrats that don’t deserve to set foot in any sort of office (sorry, Kerry, you switch sides more times per day then the average computer processor switch does in a minute, we don’t need that)

b)slap his wrists. Scare tactics are cheap. He doesn’t like the government, fine. Personally, I don’t like Obama’s spending policies either. I didn’t like Bush’s policies. It is the right of the people to petition the government, but what good is one voice against several million?

People can champion Obama all they want. While he might be brighter and more stable then Bush he hasn’t really been effective in doing anything. The recession isn’t getting better, we still have an annoying pirate problem apparently, there is still rampant corruption in all areas of the government and business. Obviously prison isn’t phasing these guys one bit. I’d almost advocate bringing back the guillotine and hosting public executions of corrupt business men and law makers with mandatory attendance to drill a zero tolerance policy to this kind of crap. The slogan could be “Do your damn job correctly or your head’ll be in this basket”. Bush and his cronies wouldn’t have lasted a week under that policy and the guys coming in to office would know not to screw around.
