Scarborough: Obama Is ‘More Focused On Targeting Veterans’ Than Fighting Al Qaeda

Yesterday, a copy of a Department of Homeland Security report was leaked, detailing the increasing radicaliziation of “rightwing extremists.” One portion of the report warned that “rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to exploit their skills and knowledge derived from military training and combat.”

This morning on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” host Joe Scarborough expressed fury at the report’s mention of veterans. Ignoring the report’s conclusion that right-wing groups would try to recruit veterans, Scarborough declared that the Obama administration was “targeting veterans” and waging a “war on veterans”:

When you have a president and you have the Department of Homeland Security more focused on targeting veterans than on protecting our border on the South where a war is breaking out, or protecting us from, I don’t know, al Qaeda? Isn’t this interesting: they no longer want to use the term “war on terror”? They don’t want to use “the war on terror” because that makes them feel uncomfortable, but they have no problem targeting veterans returning from war. This is perverse. … There’s not a war on terror but there may be a war on veterans.

Watch it:

Scarborough declared that if Dick Cheney had done something similar, the entire media would have been appalled.

What if Dick Cheney decided that he was going to target liberals? … Can you imagine what certain newspapers and cable news shows would do if George Bush and Dick Cheney decided to target democratic loyalists, and say that they may be a terror threat?

Of course, DHS already wrote a report on “left-wing extremists,” completed earlier this year. “This is the job of DHS, to assess what is happening in this country, with regard to homegrown terrorism, and determine whether it’s an actual threat or not, and that’s what these assessments do. This is nothing unusual,” a DHS official told Fox News.

More importantly, the report did not target “conservatives” or “Republican loyalists.” Indeed, it’s odd that conservatives like Scarborough would willingly group themselves and Republicans in with “rightwing extremist activity, specifically the white supremacist and militia movements” — the actual focus of the DHS report. Scarborough is not alone in this lumping, however; yesterday, Michelle Malkin declared that the report a “hit job on conservatives,” while Fox News linked the report to the conservative “tea parties.”

sort of like when obama and the democrats voted against the 21st century G.I. bill as being too generous right, joe? oooppss that’s right, those were suscribers of your ideology joe, the repukies.

  2. Brian Crooks says:

This was the first thing I saw when I woke up this morning and it absolutely turned my stomach. To watch him take a report about growing right-wing extremism and make it an attack on our veterans had me literally shouting at the TV screen. And what made matters worse, neither Mike Brezinski nor Mike Barnicle actually said anything about it. They never mentioned that Timothy McVeigh, the Branch Davidians, the Atlanta Olympic bomber, nor the Unabomber were ALL right-wing extremists. There was no mention that neo-nazis, Klansmen, nor the myriad of militant militas are ALL right-wing extremists. They couldn’t even be bothered to explain that a similar report came out in January about the rise of left-wing extremists and cyberterror, nor the fact that the report played off of one a few months ago under the Bush Administration detailing VETERANS BECOMING EXTREMISTS.

Maybe we should take the KKK and neo-nazi groups more seriously than al-Qaeda. They’re already here, they’re already killing Americans, and we know exactly where they are and how to find them. I absolutely hope that MSNBC lets Keith Olbermann name Joe Scarborough today’s Worst Person in the World.

  4. bonat says:

scarborough didn’t comprehend the report at all just like the republicans don’t comprehend why they lost.

  5. tom says:

Most of the right-wing rant-jockeys like Joey, Rush the Lush and Seanie Vanity are really thin-skinned prima donas who wake up daily in search of something . . . anything . . . to be offended about.

They make their living p*ssing and moaning about imaginary stuff. This is why they are generally more vitriolic and dangerous when their party is the minority . . . they can find more imaginary stuff to take offense at.

  6. deals says:

The “editorial” meetings at FOX must be hilarious. I wonder how these knuckleheads sleep at night.

  7. i420 says:

Someone should remind him it was that this time 13 ears ago, just months after taking office, that Scarborough and the nation were shocked at what a couple of prior military service extremists committed in Oklahoma City.

  8. larkohio says:

Nonsense! Obama is targeting the veterans by going to Iraq, is that how? Or how about Michelle Obama focusing on helping veteran’s families, is that how? Give me a break here, the government is concerned about folks like Timothy McVey, and well they should be.

Joe is out of touch and out to lunch!

  9. i420 says:

    Ermmm…14 years ago.

  10. galmud says:

Well these reports confirm what people on the right have been saying all along. The rightwing extremist report proves Obama is a communist. The leftwing extremist report proves Obama is a fascist.

  11. Marlowe says:

I gotta say, I love the tacit admission that Dick Cheney was the president the last eight years.

  12. fire _ant_chavis says:

Joe Scarborough is just plain STUPID! I don’t watch his show because his ignorant ranting makes my headache. Shyte, we’ve got terrorist groups right here in the USofA. Thank goodness for this report from the DHS. We need to be aware of all extremist groups – most of whom are on the RIGHT WING! It’s the truth whether Silly Joe and Madwoman Malkin want to admit it or not. They can stick that in their teabags and smoke it!

  13. ChicagoSox says:

Their problem is the only people left supporting the GOP are the 29%ers, i.e., extremists.

They are appealing to the most base instincts of the racists to secure the “base”.

They have to try to conflate ‘conservative’ with whackadoodle b/c any sane conservative wants extremists and terrorists locked up. That’s why they claim it’s a report about ‘conservatives’ despite the fact the report doesn’t use that word at all.

Timothy McVeigh was a home-grown, right-wing terrorist. When Clinton’s folks initially suspected “Muslims” they were laughed at for wagging the dog some more by GOP idiots.

Thing is, Clinton’s folks weren’t wrong to look at Muslim terrorists as well as home-grown ones. Today, it’s important to look at home-grown terrorists as well as foreign ones–especially since the worst of the home-grown terrorists are losing their shit over a black man not only being elected President, but continuing to have high poll numbers.

  14. pbeeg says:

    Fighting Al Qaeda?
Not a topic Republicans should bring up, Joe.

  15. redroad55 says:

I see an empty studio set with “Goodbye Joe” placard an an ice latte with a dildo in it

  16. KateWords says:

I’m surprised. Joe is usually better informed. I believe the report said that extremists may target veterans for recruitment, not that the DHS will target veterans as terrorists. Seems he just saw the words “target” and “veterans” in the same paragraph and ran with it. Methinks he’s auditioning for a transfer to Fox perhaps?

  17. tokin librul says:

If Joe were, in fact, actually a veteran his whine might be slightly more tolerable…

    but guess what?

    Bawk-bawk, bu-gawk!

    He’s just another chickenshit chickenhawk!!!

  18. spencers butterfly mom says:

MSNBC needs to rethink their morning show. Joe should have been removed after he said “phuck” (sorry for using the correct spelling first time, mods) during the “morning in the kitchen with the kids” time slot, and he’s becoming increasingly incoherent.

And where was Joe during the tenure of BushCo and the GOOP congress? Dems, liberals and people advocating for peace and adherence to the US Constitution were smeared at every turn!

    STFU, Joe. Thank you.

    PEACE

  19. kasinca says:

Joe Scarborough is the dumbest link in the chain on that morning show. Joe is right wing and an idiot. I refuse to watch the show when I see him on it.

  20. paleolib says:

Just another example of Republicans expressing hostility and disbelief that an administration can perform multiple tasks at once. This isn’t an either/or situation Joe. After Timothy McVeigh it would be stunningly [Bushlike]incompetent not to keep an eye on infiltration of the military by extremist elements. This report was not done at the expense of DHS work regarding al qaeda or the Mexican border. Get used to a competent administration Joe. Looks like it’s going to be around for quite some time.

  21. tokin librul says:

Responding to Scarborough, Barnicle notes that DHS is “not targeting veterans,” but is “is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities”

Something’s changed in the world, here, folks…

After my war, we veterans were 1) pre-radicalized by the craziness, terror, and murderous craqp in which we had been forced to participate, adn 2) were ‘recruited’ by the VVAW, not that they had to try very hard.

Any OTHER group identified as a potential threat by DHS would be cause for the likes of Joe S to fearmonger, hide in the basement and rail against.

But when it is right wing radical groups, it now all of a sudden becomes time to protect the accused terrorist threat.

    Real nice.

Kind of like all of a sudden railing against deficits and bailouts AFTER a republican does those things and a DEM is in office, ain’t it?

  25. tokin librul says:

McVeigh was no radical when he enlisted.

He was a frustrated Ranger, who couldn’t “cut it.”

That’s what “radicalized” him…his own failure, which like all rightards he blamed on the favors granted to others, rather than his own mediocrity.

Moron, they also released a report in January about dangerous left-wing groups and cyberterrorism. Moron, this report was released by a conservative blogger, not the Administration. Moron, it’s not politicized to report that radical groups are increasing their ranks because of the economy and a Black President. I am contacting to STRONGLY object to the infantile, inappropriate and absolutely false accusation spewed forth by Joe Scarborough on “Morning Joe” on 4/15/09 that President Obama is “more interested in targeting veterans than in fighting Al Qaeda.”

This is not what the report from DHS says, and if he would bother to read the report, initiated by the Bush administration (a fact not surprisingly left out of Mr. Scarborough’s vile screed) he would know that. The only conclusion I can draw from this and other vile diatribes to which viewers are subjected each morning by this charlatan gone berserk is that what used to be a legitimate news organization is now more interested in fashioning itself to look like Fox News Channel.

It saddens and angers me that in seeking to keep themselves informed by patronizing your organization, American citizens are bombarded with rants the likes of which I witnessed this morning. Speaking for myself, I am not interested in the opinions of persons such as Mr. Scarborough, who is either too lazy too actually gather facts to relate to his audience or too biased to care if what he is spewing is true.

I’m disappointed that our friend Daryll, aka RaptureReady, aka Future Whitley County Councilman, has turned into a hit-and-run troll like Troll John Kerry. (Anybody seen Troll JK lately, by the way?)

Daryll has so much insight he could offer us if he’d only stick around and chat, but I guess what with his wife’s pregnancy (shouldn’t she be in at least her second trimester by now?) and setting up his exploratory committee, he probably doesn’t have the time.

  85. jeevmon says:

Joe Scarborough is a piece of work. Where was his outrage about the war on veterans when Bush/ Cheney/ Rumsfeld were sending American soldiers to die for neocon wet dreams, extending their deployments under “stop-loss” programs, and cutting their benefits on their return? Republicans have been waging a war on veterans for years, and covering it up by sending our sons and daughters to die in stupid wars.

  86. Xisithrus says:

Where is Joes outrage when vets dont get the medical care they deserve?

BTW, Joe, if your not doing anything wrong what do you have to worry about?

    Sound familiar?

  87. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Oh I get it. Just because it says the word “veterans” in the report, that’s an attack on veterans.

These people really don’t have a clue how stupid they sound. They also don’t realize that the more the pull crap like this, the more the American public turns against them. I had a talk with a Republican the other day and I asked him how it felt to be a Republican today. He told me that he rarely admits he’s a Republican and he’s embarrassed by what the party has become. It’s no wonder the percentage of people in this country who call themselves Republicans is at 35% and dropping daily. Today there are more people who call themselves Independents than Republicans.

  88. DRxJapanese Beetle says:

Daryll, I don’t think this “teabag” gathering is exactly what you think it is.
You can close your mouth now!

  89. freeman says:

What if Dick Cheney decided that he was going to target liberals?
    ……………..
Guess Joe missed the declassified OLC legal opinions on which Bush based his actions which declared the constitution null and void during our war/conflict (?) on terror .
The violent radicalization and homegrown terrorist act always made me feel all warm and fuzzy about my exercising my inalienable right of free expression in the face of an administration who we now know proceeded on the assumption that you could be arrested on no charges for dissent .

  90. MrBrown says:

Ah, Joe’s back to his old ways. Guess all of the bi-partisan talk for the last week must have gotten him some bad emails in his box.

Maybe he apologized to Rush as well.

  91. spring heeled jack says:

Joe, you big fat head! [noogie] I know you suffer from Chickenhawk Guilt Syndrome, but has it ever occurred to you that there are a few bad men that sign up for the armed forces? -Who fantasize about shooting people and blowing things up? If Columbine’s Eric Harris hadn’t been on an anti-depressant, he would have been accepted into the Marine Corps.

  92. GizmoD10E says:

I tried to contact MSNBC execs using the e-mails above. Delivery failed.

    _____________________________________________________________

OK, this is a bit fresher than RR’s usual blather. Let’s break it down…

“Hey, everyone! I am a terrorist!”
    – I wouldn’t proclaim that too loudly. But if it makes you feel better…

“I want to tear down this nation…”
    – Patriotism a little weak today? Most Americans want to do what we think is best for the nation — even if we disagree on what that is.

“…by pressuring officials to limit spending and excessive taxation.”
    – Where were you when Bush was funneling billions and billions of dollars into wars he created? Somehow THAT spending is more noble than spending to lift up our economy? And your “excessive taxation” meme is a myth on almost every level.

“I want to militarize our borders.”
    – Good luck with that. We barely have enough military to fight the battles we have going on overseas. Where are you going to get all this extra military? And with what money — since you object to “spending”?

    “Today, I am attending a terrorist movement…”
    – No, I think you’re attending a teabagging event. But they both begin with T, so I can see how you might get confused. Let me see if I can explain. A TERRORIST is one whose objective is to cause TERROR through violence or causing harm to enough people to motivate fear in the rest. The protest events today aren’t terrorizing anyone (but they certainly are providing a lot of humor for many of us).

“…that will harm lives by decreasing taxation on our children and grandchildren.”
    – No, decreasing the debt burden for future generations is a good thing, not a harmful one. We’ve been preaching this for the past eight years as Bush’s spending has gone through the roof (during which time you and your ilk were curiously quiet on the issue). This is why it’s important that we repair our economy so the economic engine will be healthy for our children and grandchildren.

“I am dangerous, I tell you. DANGEROUS!”
    – Nah, you’re not even worrisome. You’re mostly just laughable.

“This report was authorized by a woman who previously had the highest kidnapping/crime in her state because of drug cartels/illegal immigrants.”
    – I assume you’re talking about the recent DHS report on right-wing extremism? What, exactly, is your point here? If you are accusing this woman of — well, I don’t know what exactly you’re accusing her of — you’ll have to connect the dots in some coherent manner.

“To categorize American service members as terrorist is disgusting and a huge stain on the Democratic party.”
    – Nobody is categorizing our service members as terrorist. If we did so without cause, that would indeed be disgusting. The report merely said that veterans tended to have skills that crackpot groups bent on violence would find useful, and they may be targeted for membership in these groups. The report made no claim that they’re signing up in droves. Furthermore, the report came from the Department of Homeland Security, not the Democratic Party. And the DHS has done similar research on potential left-wing extremism. Would you believe this is part of their job?

“Anyway, I am off to the Washington Mall (Driving to the Orange line metro).”
    – Ironic that you’re using transportation subsidized by your taxes to go complain about paying said taxes. But I do applaud your choice of a transportation mode that’s more energy efficient and less polluting than driving an automobile.

“Based on today’s movement, I sense a change in policies. God Bless.”
    – I doubt seriously you’re going to get much in the way of policy change. More people support President Obama’s policies than oppose them — take a look at any legitimate poll. Do you really think Obama is going to look at your little tea parties and say, “Oh wow — I’d better scrap all my plans and do what the Republicans say”? Get real.

    ________________________________________________________

I believe there are many Republicans out there who do NOT identify with the Limbaughs, the Hannitys, the Coulters, etc.

People ask, “where are all the reasonable Republicans, and why are they allowing their party to be hijacked by the nutcases?”

It’s because they’re being drowned out. The nutcases have all the microphones.

  95. APEC not OPEC says:

Guilty conscious Joe? I do not recall any outrage when the DHS published a similar report on LeftWing extremists on Feb. 26,2009.

  96. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

To all you right wing trolls out there:

Please tell us how many acts of domestic terrorism have been committed by Liberals in the last 20 years. And, no, you can’t call burning a vacant building an act of domestic terrorism. The act has to be aimed at people, like blowing up buildings with children in them.

    Anxiously awaiting your answer.

It’s because they’re being drowned out. The nutcases have all the microphones.

I also think it is because they are truly scared of the right wing nutcases. Its a pretty sad state of affairs when you have to be afraid of your own party.

  98. Dailyfare says:

It’s telling that Scarborough and Malking group right-wing extremistand Conservatives together. They’ve exposed their true colors; it’s called projection.

  99. maxamillion says:

I see “douch-borough” and his side kick “Dumb-Blonde” are at it again.

  100. iamwhoiam says:

Why isn’t this guy on Fox? He’s the only lunatic they have yet to hire.

  101. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

So, Fixed News is starting the spin as to why their tea bagging parties are a fizzle:

Poor weather and permit problems are threatening to put a damper on the kick-off to anti-tax “tea party” protests Wednesday.

    Priceless.

  102. Linus says:

Scarborough reads the DHS report and the conclusion he draws is that President Obama and DHS are “targeting veterans”?!?!? Sounds more like Scarborough, as usual, has been reading GOP talking points, not the DHS report. But seriously, what is it with Republicans and their appalling lack of elemental reading comprehension skills? Is it congenital? Genetic? Learned? Or are they really just that perverse?

  103. LeeHope says:

Joe Scarborough cannot hide his radical RW tendencies no matter how much he tries to prove he is in the mainstream! He must be in denial, I would have to hope at least that is all it is….but he is and will always be a far Right-wing lunatic! Does he not know that it was the Democratic majority in Congress that voted into law the most sweeping benefits for veterans in the Sen. Jim Webb [D-Va] GI Bill, and that pres. Obama is putting it into fuition. Does he not know that First Lady Michelle Obama has made military families and returning veterans one of her staples that she cares deeply about! Does he not know that Pres. Obama has made the issue of PTSD a primary issue in the Veterans Affairs Dept. which has long been neglected….If that is “targeting veterans” I would have to agree with him!!!!

  104. delafield says:

Joe Scarborough’s hate filled rhetoric against President Obama grows stronger every day.

It sounds as though Scarborough’s dream come true would be the assasination of Barack Obama.

  105. Impolitic says:

Conservatives seem to believe that there is no such thing as a right-wing extremist. Extremists only exist on the left, and anyone to the left of Glen Beck is an extremist, including of course, our president, who is leading the country into socialist enslavement.

Hannity, Limbaugh, and Beck notwithstanding, historical facts show that the greatest domestic terror threat is not from the left; It is from the right just as the greatest foreign terror threat is from Islamic extremists. Left-wing extremists seem to content themselves with the occasional attempt to hit people like Anne Coulter in the face with a pie. (Sadly, none have been very good aims so far in Coulter’s case).

  106. Baloney says:

Janet “Idiot” Napolitano should be fired for her remarks about our veterans. She who loves open borders, allowing anyone from all over the world to sneak into our country and expecting taxpayers to then pay for their care, doesn’t worry about terroist coming in this way, but she targets vets, this is appalling and is symptonmatic of this Obami administration trying to control our every move. I am telling everyone I know to call congress demanding this woman be kicked out.

  107. Marie says:

Gizmo, mine went through OK to MSNBC.

  108. Marie says:

Baloney – your moniker is appropriate — you’re full of it.
Come back when you know what you’re tlaking about — right now we have had enough from sausage heads like you.

  109. Progressive Republican says:

Is he saying its ok to be a radical terrorist as long as you’re a veteran? I guess vets don’t have to abide by the law.

An extremist is an extremist, no matter what they did before.

  110. 1ChanceOnly says:

Here we go, it is obvious that the Republiconeheads are reving up this story. Yet they don’t mention the numerous threats against our President and the First Family. Nor do they mention the efforts of the right to continue calling President Obama racist names. For Scarbourough to state what he said from reading headlines is indicative of his ignorance and emblematic of the talking ditto heads he appeals to. Look at the Tea Party…the same thing. “Stupid is what stupid says.” Most of the idiots are getting tax cuts while the rich lobbyist (ARMEY and the like) are trying to cut taxes for the wealthy and corporations who hide money in the off shore accounts.

  111. chaking says:

It’s weird… the left wing extremist report linked to in this post stated that anarchists are considered left wing extremists. How exactly do anarchists fit into the left side of the political spectrum… don’t they kind of fall off the political spectrum altogether seeing as how they don’t want government?

  112. Chocolate Jesus says:

And lets not forget….Al Queda, as a fundamentalist group, is extremely right wing…no womans rights, they hate gay marriage, they beleive violence solves problems, they think government should be based on religious texts thousands of years old, and anyone who disagrees with them are traitors, heretics and blasphemers…sounds prettty right wing
    to me..

  113. Chapalody says:

If President Obama can tell the Muslims we’re not at war with Islam, he can surely tell our returning soldiers we’re not at war with you. Not all Muslims are alike and not all returning soldiers are alike either. President Obama should know this. If he can respect the nation of Islam to make such a statement, I think he can show our returning troops the same respect.

  114. ElBruce says:

    Chapalody Says:

Chick-fil-A is in business to do what. Make money.

You’d think that, but there are a number of businesses which still put their owner’s politics ahead of the long term best interest of their company. Some on the left as well. It happens. Over time, such businesses tend to cease to exist, but new imbeciles pop up spontaneously.

Actually, most of the righ-wingers lately complain about any amount of taxation, which means that they ultimately support a 0% tax rate, which means they’re anarchists too. So I guess anarchy is a right-wing movement these days. Go figure.

Err, duh? He’s their Commander-In-Chief. It’s not like he’s at odds with them in any way.

Hey, I’ve got a crazy (left-wing) idea! Let’s actually take care of our returning veterans and take their medical and psychological conditions seriously upon return! That would involve actually funding the VA, though. But who knows, it might actually work! It’s not like it’s ever been tried before!

Go go Shinseki! (and wasn’t that an awesome pick, btw?)
