Tea baggers joke about Obama being waterboarded, shining the shoes of the Saudi king.

Tea party organizers and participants have repeatedly insisted that their nationwide protests today are completely non-partisan and not meant to be anti-Obama. However, there didn’t seem to be any anti-Republican or anti-Bush signs at the protests. Instead, not only were there signs/clothing protest Obama’s policies, but some had violent or racist rhetoric. One participant even asked Joe the Plumber about waterboarding Obama:

Q: If you could waterboard Obama this weekend, what would you try to get out of him? What would you ask him?

WURZELBACHER: (LAUGHTER) Well, I don’t want to waterboard Obama.

Watch it:

Blogger Oliver Willis also saw a sign at the DC protest referencing Obama’s alleged bow to Saudi King Abdullah, saying that if he wasn’t bowing, “then he must have been polishing his shoes.” Dave Weigel from the Washington Independent saw another sign reading, “homey don’t play dat“:

signs2s.jpg

Ironically, the AP reports that Greg Budell — a talk radio host in Montgomery, AL — said that the tea parties could “have the same impact that Montgomerian Rosa Parks had when she refused to move to the back of a city bus during segregation.”

Update Matt Yglesias writes, "[O]ne of the hallmarks of contemporary American conservatism is that while it’s no longer a white supremacist movement, it is a movement marked by a combination of tolerance for racism with massive oversensitivity about the idea that 'PC' forces are stifling freedom."

Right. ‘Cause being the rump minority of a failed political program is just like asking for equal rights.

I doubt that. I’m pretty sure the self-imposed segregation between conservatives and the reality-based community will continue long after the last tea has been bagged.

I HAVE TO POST THIS…COPIED FROM ANOTHER POST.

    Enjoy my friends,

The Republicans strip and form a huge naked pile – a gay sex orgy in an attempt to stop the Obama Socialist future – preventing themselves from reproducing.

A few Democrats come along, and start making some reasonable suggestions: resolving our differences with diplomacy, nuclear disarmament, economic stimulus, coming together, holding hands, singing Kumbaya.

People are starting to agree, then one of the Republicans interrupts saying “Wait! This is gay!”

“OK everyone, back in the pile!”

  9. Brian Crooks says:

The analogy would make more sense if Rosa Parks had been heavily subsidized by PAC money and if there had been a two-week ad campaign on a cable news network promoting her refusal to get up before it happened.

Perhaps they could have the same impact — if the teabagger parties actually inspired people to take action, rather than being the laughable non-events that they were, inspiring people only to ignore them and go on with their lives…

They don’t have to support their President if they don’t want to. They have every right to dissent. That’s patriotism.

These teabagging orgies, however, are neither. They’re just a pathetic marketing gimmick masquerading as genuine dissent.

Well, it was a hectic day at work but I bopped in from time to time to hear about this fiasco. I didn’t think I would really care, but truth be told, I got sucked into this drama.

The bottom line for me here is a departure from my earlier sorrow. I was so sorry these people would not think for themselves. I was so sorry these people cannot form their own critical thoughts.

    But I’m over it.

I’ve seen them challenged, “what do you stand for, what are you protesting, why are you protesting it” and all I hear are bumper-sticker gibberish impaired mewing.

You’ve let your country down, nimtards. Theses are hard times, we need collaboration and innovation. You’ve spat in the face of the founding mothers and fathers. You’ve spat in every service-persons face. You don’t deserve freedom, I’m glad you are cowering with fear over shadows and tree branches. You are lamenting your ill-bred grandmoron’s “debt”? You deserve your fear. You think the boogah-boogahs are watching you? You have earned your panic. You chose to be what you are now, a vulnerable, lost sheep.

I wasn’t suggesting they “had” to support their President.

And there’s nothing patriotic about failing to support a President who’s been in office less than 90 days during a time of war.

    NOTHING.

  16. SlappyBastinado says:

What I saw mainly was child abuse, parents made signs for their kids that said things like “I owe Obama $15,000.00 and I’m 6 years old, don’t have a job yet and won’t for 10 more years, how am I going to pay?” We need camps to start putting these people in, just like Napolitano said, these people are dangerous and need to be locked up.

  17. WAYNEBRO says:

If this was a year or two down the road and he’d had a chance to actually “do something”, then fine.

But less than 90 days out?

Hell he hasn’t even had time to warm the chair.

And lets make no mistake about this.

They’re not protesting tax increases, as the rhetoric coming in demonstrates.

    They’re protesting HIM.

  19. Mike71654 says:

  20. WAYNEBRO says:

These protests are organized racism. It’s about his color. It’s the unspoken dirty little secret that rears its ugly head in statements like “shining shoes”.

Shining shoes of course is for anyone over 40 who’s lived in a big city knows, is a profession that at one time was strictly associated with black people. And to this day its used as a racial slur.

This is nothing but a bunch of lily white neoconservative Christians holding hands with a bunch of neo-nazi’s and skin heads thinking they’re doing some good while really just shilling for the rich wealthy fat cats who are afraid of paying 3 percent more on their fortunes.

  21. ElBruce says:

    Mike71654 Says:

Correct. But there’s no point in complaining about the fact that there are stupid people in the world. What’s worth being upset about is that fact that people who know better are exploiting and taking advantage of those stupid people.

  22. misscoleopteramolly says:

Greg Budell — a talk radio host in Montgomery, AL — said that the tea parties could “have the same impact that Montgomerian Rosa Parks had when she refused to move to the back of a city bus during segregation.”
    ___________________________________________________________

Budell fails to recognize that there’s virtually no similarity between today’s tea parties and Rosa Parks’ act of civil disobedience years ago.

When Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white person, it was a protest about a specific thing. And the boycott it inspired was toward a specific objective. And because it was kept simple, it never lost focus. And because it never lost focus, it was ultimately successful.

Imagine if protesters in support of Parks had brought a lot of other issues into the fray. Imagine if, instead of focusing on the treatment of black citizens on city buses, they yelled and screamed about taxes, Communism, McCarthyism, the Cold War, and any other unrelated issue they could think of. The movement would have become fragmented and their original message lost.

Fast forward to today. What are these people protesting? I see signs about taxes, spending, the stimulus package — which is what I thought these tea parties were about. But I also see signs about illegal immigration, gun rights, the Employee Free Choice Act, President Obama bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia, and virtually every other wingnut issue. As well as signs just randomly slamming Obama with no specific reason (”Obama Bin Lyin”, “Maobama”, etc.). Instead of people focused with a single purpose, it just looks like a GOP whine-fest with a message of WAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!

There’s no similarity between these tea parties and Rosa Parks. None.

I actually agree with Yglesia’s in that this isn’t about white supremacy (tho there is still some of that involved), its really about the fear of something ‘different’. Different color, difference religion, different politics… anything different is seen as ‘wrong’. The danger in this is that, eventually, the only person left who isn’t ‘different’ is yourself… and thus is born a psychopath.

    1. President Obama will raise taxes on small businesses.
    2. The estate tax devastates small businesses and family farms.
    3. 40% of Americans pay no taxes.
    4. Tax cuts always increase revenue.
    5. The GOP is the party of fiscal discipline.
    6. Ronald Reagan was the greatest tax cutter of all time.
    7. FDR caused the Great Depression, or at least made it worse.
    8. Obama’s cap-and-trade plan will cost each American family $3,100 a year.
    9. Obama’s tax proposals will undermine charitable giving.

  56. cheewizz says:

I happen to live in a Southern state (ugh…) and here’s my take on all these tea parties. For the most part, they’re a bunch of racists who are looking for a reason to protest having a black man in the white house. (Before you ask, I’m white.) The things they’re protesting against just don’t make sense if they bothered to listen to what Obama has to say and look at what he’s doing. Middle-class people protesting higher taxes for the wealthy? Pul-eeze… Don’t want government spending — in this recession?? Really??! These protestors don’t look like economists to me. Anti-socialism?? How many have family members on disability or medicare? This looks to me like rich Republicans giving middle-class and poor white people a reason (but not really a valid one) to do what they wanted to anyway, which is protest an African American president. And I’m ashamed to say a couple of fools in my own family are out there basking in their own ignorance…

  57. JohnM says:

“Alas, they do pay for them. As FactCheck among others noted, Republican conveniently ignore sales, excise and most of all, payroll taxes. Starting with the first dollar they earn, virtually all American workers pay the 6.2% Social Security tax (on income up to $97,000) and another 1.45% for Medicare. An analysis by the Tax Policy Center concluded, “three quarters of filers pay more in payroll taxes than in income taxes.”

The statement regarding payroll taxes is such straw man.

    http://www.moneychimp.com/glossary/payroll_tax.htm

“A huge number of people pay far more in payroll taxes than they do in income taxes. On the other hand, the payroll tax isn’t a true “tax” in the sense that it isn’t supposed to be a source of revenue for the government – it’s supposed to be a contribution to an account that you’ll be entitled to withdraw benefits from at a later date. For that reason payroll taxes generally aren’t included in discussions about tax cuts: the only way you can get a cut in your contributions is to (a) accept a corresponding cut in benefits, or (b) have your benefits subsidized by somebody else, or (c) reform the entire system.”

To include social security into what is taxed would be like including 401K contributions. Income taxes fund the government, not social security taxes and 40% of Americans do not pay income taxes.

  58. wiley says:

Just a few words about Rosa Parks—I’ve heard a recording of her telling the story, and it’s very different from what we usually hear.

She was sitting in the black section of the bus. The bus was full. There was a rule that when the bus was full, that blacks had to give up their seats to whites on request. A man asked for her seat. At that moment, she refused to give up her seat. She had no intention of protesting when she got on the bus. She was moved very deeply by her own experience and when the man asked for her seat she was hit that wall of quiet resolve in which she could no longer give in to abuse.

Rosa Parks story does not in any way compare to these stupid little protests.

  64. Xisithrus says:

Reagan was the greatest tax-cutter of all time

Reagan reduced income tax rates, with the largest rate reductions on the highest incomes;[1][2] in a time of battling inflation,[citation needed] Reagan raised deficit spending to its highest level (relative to GDP) since World War II.

Reagan did cut taxes, but he also increased the debt..which, you know, is generational theft.[using Malkin logic here] But the reason for taxes is federal debt. But as the same with Dubya he cut taxes for the wealthy and increased spending [creating more 'generational theft']

So what good are these tax cuts if it doesnt stop increased spending? If you dont pay down the debt then interest raises the amount of debt even higher. Its like getting car loan for 10k dollars and then taking 100 years to pay it off while the interest makes the car, which is devaluing, cost much more than 10k.

Ennyhooo, the people that showed up to the tea bagging, by their signs and shirts arent really interested in taxes or spending and, apparently, think its an election year.

They should save some of that fearful energy for 2012

Oh Jesus, I’m having too much fun with this.

Hey JohnM, I’m slated to get a reduction in my mortgage payments because of Obama’s program. Are you paying for that?

If so, thanks for your contribution.

Good for you, I hope the government helps you pay for other legally binding contracts you signed.

  72. barfly says:

You are way off because the money will go back to the people that pay into it when they are eligible, income taxes do not. To compare income taxes to social security taxes is simply ridiculous.

You really don’t know how your country’s tax system works, do you? SSI goes into the general operating fund, and the SSI fund is issued an IOU for the funds, payable at the time the worker retires, plus interest. They are used the same as tax funds, so your point is moot.

  73. backup says:

Those protesting deficit spending should not single out Obama. Bush spent too much. There should be a recognition that Obama inherited poor financial conditions, that he will be judged on how he addresses.

People have a right to voice their opposition to increases in debt or more significant deficit spending or even budget priorities. The Obama administration should communicate how the interim deficit spending will enable a stronger recovery and future fiscal discipline.

If people are unwilling to support Obama’s spending initiatives, the Obama administration can make the claim that it was that lack of support that prevented a quicker or more robust recovery.

The attempts to generalize the tea party attendees as racists or partisans only postpones the need to address those legitimately concerned about our increasing debt and its impact.

Tell me, if Democrats are spending Socialists – why is nearly 100% of the federal debt under GOP presidential signature?

I am actually a libertarian and did not vote for Bush in either election. My dislike for Obama’s policies have nothing to do with his skin color. I thought the debt Bush created was horrible and I think Obama’s is adding to that at an alarming rate.

Fine. As longs as they temper their criticisism with an understanding that this mess is very complicated and inevitably very expensive, just like previous republican failures have been. If they must show their concern so soon, it appears as if they aren’t really interested in success of the economy, so much as democratic failure.

Have you seen any democratic representatives at these? Any Blue Dogs? I don’t know, I’m just curious if any “moderate” dems have been in attendance at any of these little spitefests.

Don’t forget that the mess we are in now was caused by Bush and that is still fresh in our memories.

Why the ‘tea baggers’ were silent all these years about Bush administration?!.
Bush always got more money than what he asked for under Republican Congress, with no hesitation from Republicans lawmakers.
‘Tea baggers’ are now making noise they should have made long time ago when Bush started his spending spree, and neglected the economy when he was in charge ,if they are to be trusted and believed that this is not simply an anti Obama stunt, organized by the same Republican leaders who wrecked the economy and US budget to begin with.

Of course they are different in that respect. My point was that it is paying toward your retirement and talking about all the taxes you are paying when the benefit of social security will be paid back to you. Face it the richest people in the country pay for the bottom feeders and have for quite awhile. Whining about social security taxes and sales tax will not change that.

You’re way off, again. I was going by the example you provided, sport. Look up the definition of “tax” and get back to me. SSI is a tax, because it is used the same as a tax, once it hits the general operating fund. See JohnM, there’s a thing called the TAX BURDEN and this is ALL TAXES PAID. You WHINE about SSI being DIFFERENT because YOU’LL GET SOMETHING BACK – but that’s the INTENTION of ALL TAXES! And SSI has NO GUARANTEES you’ll EVER GET ANYTHING BACK like PRETTY MUCH ALL TAXES…

When you INCLUDE *ALL* taxes, Sales, SSI, Income, etc., then POOR PEOPLE are MUCH MORE BURDENED than RICH – ESPECIALLY relative TO THEIR ABILITY to PAY TAXES. This means it’s actually the POOR PEOPLE that are LETTING THE RICH largely SUCK OFF THE TEET and LIVE THE HIGH LIFE at THE EXPENSE of THEIR LABOR!

As USUAL you HAVE IT REVERSED – MORON!

That was a very incoherent post. The amount that the average person gets from their ssi compared to what they pay far exceeds what rich people receive and pay. No matter how much you compare ssi taxes to income taxes they will never be the same and you know this. Unfortunately you have painted yourself into a corner and you have no place else to go. Social security is a retirement fund created by a democratic president that has proven to have shortcomings. Now people want to get out of paying it and still receive the retirement funds.

I love your comment about ability to pay taxes. That is classic. I wonder how well economies have done that adopted the philosophy “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” If only there was some history to base that off of to see how well it worked out.

    Bad Eye Says:

    How about this:

I was just reading a story in our local rag about one of the Tea Parties in town, and it mentioned that the NRA was there signing up members.

    WTF?

Hey, if you worked for PETA, wouldn’t you show up at an anti-Iraq-War rally? You go where lots of your most likely prospects are.

  137. DNFP says:

It’s no joke, especially to complete shit-heels like Rick Perry:

Perry dismissed characterizations that those attending Wednesday’s “tea party” rallies in Texas and around the country are “a bunch of right-wing extremists.”

“But if you are, I’m with you,” he said

Could Repukes be any more oblivious to their hypocrisy?

  138. DNFP says:

Wanna’ quiz me? Ask me anything at all about aircraft part fabrication. Anything at all.

Oh yea Shirly? Which part of a Rolls Royce high-bypass turbafan is repairable by replacing a “fetzer valve and using some gauze”?

I parse that as him saying “you guys aren’t right-wing extremists, but I am.”

  140. upright left says:

“…it is a movement marked by a combination of tolerance for racism with massive oversensitivity about the idea that ‘PC’ forces are stifling freedom.”

That massive oversensitivity is a response to the massive oversensitivity of those who would use terms like “man-caused disaster” to avoid offending terrorists. ;)

So sorry to burst your tightly-gripped stereotype, but if you’ll look at my profile you’ll see I work in aerospace manufacturing. Have been for 14 years. Wanna’ quiz me? Ask me anything at all about aircraft part fabrication. Anything at all.

How many cherwittles does it take to reverse a canonigoggle on the fore tail wing? Surprise quiz: left-handed, please.

  142. Caro says:

Your headline is misleading, Amanda, and plays in to this ridiculous obsession that some on the left have with ridiculing the tea parties, which by the way mocks gay people at the same time.

We cannot object to the right’s twisting of our motives and terms if we twist theirs.

It’s really funny how the right is SO obsessed about Obama bowing to the Saudi king (it would be ok if he bowed to a Japanese businessman, I assume). Has everybody forgotten this picture?

    http://my2bucks.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/bush-saudi-hand-holding-1.jpg

Where was the outrage then from the right? These idiots don’t even realize how closely-involved the Bushes are with the Saudi royal family (which funded 9-11, according to many). It all comes down to racism…dark skin + dark skin = conspiracy. White = Right. Let them secede.

  144. kevin1 says:

None of you guys get it!!!!!
The tea parties have nothing to do with Obama himself; it’s about his policies of hi taxation.

No one wants to pay higher taxes; Obama has spent more in his first 90 days than every President combined!!!!

You know what’s funny, Obama said me wouldn’t raise taxes on anyone who makes less than 250,000.00- well he sure did ,with those cig taxes. He just raised tax on almost every person making less than 20,000.00 a year.

The minute the republicans have one rally you lefties start freaking out, you guys protest everything-
G8 summit, Nuclear energy, animal rights, save the earth, anti war, anti Oil and the list go on and on.
