DeLay defends Gov. Perry, explains how Texas could secede from the Union.

Yesterday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) raised the specter of his state seceding from the Union “if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people.” Today on MSNBC, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay offered a staunch defense of Perry’s statement, saying the Texas governor was “standing up for [Texas's] sovereignty.” DeLay elaborately explained how Texas could secede:

Q: You can’t secede from the Union!

DeLAY: Texas was a republic. It joined the Union by treaty. There’s a process in the treaty by which Texas could divide into five states. If we invoke that, and the last time it was voted on was 1985, the United States Senate would kick us out and nullify the treaty because they’re not going to allow 10 new Texas senators into the Senate. That’s how you secede.

“So we would kick them out of the Union? That’s nutty!” asked Matthews. “Yeah…it’s not nutty!” DeLay responded. Watch it:

That would be excellent if Texas secedes. I strongly encourage it. All the liberals would move out, and their places would be filled by rabid republicons.

It would be high comedy to watch Texas turn slowly into a dysfunctional, third-world country. Is there a petition I could sign?

  10. DavidDvorkin says:

Texas is a diverse place, with a history of liberalism and a growing Hispanic population. If it divided into a few smaller states, it’s not at all clear that the additional senators would be rightwing wackos. The result could be a net gain for the good guys.

. . . and the GOP are wondering why their arses were kicked in 2006 and 2008. What a sad song these clowns are singing.

  13. barkleyg says:

Even Chris had to say: “This is crazy talk”, and Delay told Chris he was wrong. These guys are NUTS, totally NUTS in their hatred of Obama. The guy has been in office less than 90 days, and these NUTS are talking secession.

How many on our side ever talked secession during the reign of King George, while he destroyed his Kingdom ( OUR country) for 8 long years?

And Delay is not just the usual NUT Job. This Traitor was the Leader of the Republican House members during his time in Congress.

  14. WAYNEBRO says:

During his Presidency, Andrew Jackson offered to send Federal troops down to South Carolina and hang the leaders of the secessionist movement.

  15. pd says:

All of this talk about tea party protests, socialism/fascism/communism and succeeding from the Union is just a stylized form of the right-wingers laying on their backs, holding their breath and kicking their feet like children having a tantrum. They lost and they can’t cope. They want everyone to pay attention to them and sympathize, and they don’t care if it’s the KKK, Nazis or Birchers.

  16. WAYNEBRO says:

Course, that won’t be necessary here.

Because as I said earlier, neocons and Christian conservatives are great at “talking” about going to war.

But as their leaders history shows us they’re just not too keen on actually doing it.

  17. gummble-bee-itch says:

    From my comment yesterday:

But the gov has to promise to give up this. And these. And these.

    For starters.

    From the first link:

Dollar Amount of Defense Contracts Awarded to Contractors in this State from 2000 to 2008 $255,920,123,107

Number of Defense Contracts Awarded to Contractors in this State from 2000 to 2008 165,610

The second link is to all the military bases in Texas. And that’s the US Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, deLay, not the Texas Republic Army. More than 100,000 active duty military personnel stationed in Texas. You can say goodbye to them and all the money they’ve been spending in your state, along with whatever taxes they’ve been paying. Have a great life!

  28. Wonko the Sane says:

Sooooooo……what are you waiting for, Texas, a kiss goodbye?

  29. Hoodathunktick says:

Ok, Texas thinks it should secede. Start the negotiations.

First they have to agree to take all of the remaining 25 percenters from all the other red states.

Second, they have to agree to free passage to all of the sane Texans.

Finally, they also have to agree that the border between the US and Texas should be permanently closed and a Cuba-like embargo put in place.

Good-bye, Tom DeLay, don’t let the door hit you in the ass! Just be sure to take G.W. Bush, Governor Perry, Tom Delay, Karl Rove, and any of the other rightwingnut Texas policians with you. Just don’t come crying when a hurricane, tornado, or other disaster hits. Good riddance!

  41. piltdown says:

    Go ahead and secede.

You’ve seen what the US does to small, defenseless oil-bearing countries.

We’d come “liberate” them in no time.

  42. swordsbane says:

Finally, they also have to agree that the border between the US and Texas should be permanently closed and a Cuba-like embargo put in place.

There wouldn’t be much they could do about that. It would be up to the rest of us.

Texas isn’t going to secede. Every single state has a secessionist movement. There’s even some Northern Californians who want to make a new state out of part of California and part of Oregon. Nothing ever came of it, and nothing ever will, despite prayers to the contrary offered by some of us. There is way too much that both the leaving state and the United States would lose if something like that happened. Especially from Texas (can anyone say “oil fields”)

The only possible way would be if one side or the other was willing to risk war to do it. Even these Texans aren’t that crazy, although there might be enough senators in the rest of the country to do another Civil War to “keep our national resources intact.”

  74. Jackie says:

  106. scamon01 says:

Just to pretend this is serious:
The “5 state” option was not in the treaty of annexation, so Texas has no right to “invoke” anything. It was in the joint resolution approving annexation by Congress – not signed or voted on by Texas, since they weren’t in the Union yet. Once Texas was admitted into the Union, that option is negated by Art IV, Sec 3, Cl 1 of the US Constitution, which says that to form a new state within an existing state or by joining all or part of existing states, the state legislature(s) involved AND the US Congress must approve. Barring a Congressional majority voting to cut ‘em loose (and I don’t rule out the possibility), they’re not splitting into multiple states. DeLay is talking out of his Texas bum.

They know they will have serious problems if they disrupt our government. teabaggers want to overthrow the government for their big companies but mainly because they have a aching need to be superior racist. Yeah, I really think that it’s that simple. As I said to Wayne tonight, if Senator Clinton, another moderate Democrat, had won the nomination and the election, and her first 2-1/2 months took even just a similar path, would all of these people, be spewing this kind of shite? I’d kinda like to know what our resident trolls think.

O/T but seriously: I hope that none of our friends here who live in Texas or have family there are in the tornado watch/severe weather areas. I was watching the Weather Channel, several counties are still under watches. All joking about Texas aside, I hope no one was seriously hurt.

    Xisithrus…

“Texas is doing quite well, thank you.”

Is Texass doing so well because of their shoddy public education, or is it because the illiteracy rate is through the roof?

Is Texass doing quite well because of it’s notoriously high crime rate? Or, is it the incarceration rate?

Is it because Texas has one of the highest pollution rates in the country?

Maybe, it’s the obesity epidemic in Texass that makes it so great. It’s just like they say, “Everything is bigger in Texas, especially the trucks, the belt buckles, and the women.”

If Texass is doing so well why did the people of that state elect an idiot who would actually threaten to secede?

As for talking about the need for Texass to secede; If it’s such a non-story, why would an elected official make such a ridiculous statement to the media.

The Governer of Texass created the story. He also did it for a reason. He did it so that the right wing lunatics on the radio and Fox, would jump all over this and start some bone-headed movement toward state sovereignty and possible secession.

Is that going to happen? Absolutely not.

That also doesn’t mean that the roundheads who listen to that drivel are going to take it and run with it.

Just like they believe Obama is a Socialist.

Just like they believe the Liberals are going to take their guns away.

Just like they believe Obama is an Arab, and possibly a terrorist.

Maybe, it’s just like when the right wing nut-jobs convince their sheep-like followers to attend an anti tax rally, when those protesting are, in fact, going to receive a tax break.

Except of course, the rich people who funded these events. They might have to pay a little bit more.

One more thing. I am glad to hear that the destruction caused by hurricane Ike was resolved. I’m also glad that the Federal response to that crisis was efficient and solved the problems there.

Finally, to say the remarks of an elected public official are a “non-story”. I will disagree completely. We are currently trying to recover from the policies imposed by a former, right wing, doofus Governer from Texass. And, we don’t want another radical nim-wit to have the chance to ruin this country even further.

  141. Alecto says:

In New York there are those that wish to secede from NY, not from the US. They wish to make a NEW 51st state called Long Island, with NYC as its capital. But, I guess that it would become the 56st state. ALso if California would allow that portion to secede into a new state then there is 4 new left senators to the “possible” 10 new “formerly called Texas” 10 state senators that teh bugkiller talks about, and then again as others have said, those 5 new states do not ALL turn RED. More than likely 2 of them would be Blue, so ther you have it, equality. 8 new Blue senators and 8 new Red senators.
But I doubt even 3 of those Formerly called Texas states would even be Red. Without Delay’s Gerrymandering of seats they will be lucky if they get 1 of the new formerly called Texas states Red. And boy, would that place be a sight to see. Fear and famine and tax cuts as far as the eye can see.

Senators voted 22-9 in favor of a bill by Sen. Kevin Eltife, R-Tyler, that would authorize state officials to receive the stimulus money to shore up Texas’ trust fund for unemployed workers.

3.Money for social programs(welfare, social security, disablity) – for Americans only

8.No FEMA or other disaster assistance, would have to get help from UN and other international sources since they are no long part of the United States.

Delay has no brain so he does not count and Perry needs to really think before he opens his mouth again. It might sound like a plan but the repercussions would be over the top.

As for the rest of the new states they would have no problem paying for necessary programs, there would be a lot of people moving to this new, Free Country and there would be an exodus of people that can, but choose not to work leaving as fast as their Government paid for transportation, could find a way to pass yet a new TAX, right after spending the even more Free money on setting up yet another program. Job grown in Texas between 2007-2008 was 60% of the entire nation. http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/fpposted/archive/2008/07/29/even-the-job-growth-is-big-in-texas.aspx

Texas has very good infrastructure. The power generation grid is superior to most other states. http://www.slate.com/id/2087133/ Texas produces more power than it uses and sells the remaining to other states. The Oil and Gas infrastructure links natural gas (LNG) supplies and oil from the gulf to neighboring states. http://www.txoga.org/ Oh, and the Freeways are also excellent.

Texas produces some of the best health care professionals in the world at University of Texas and Baylor and they would be happy to be spared from working in obama’s low pay controlled universal health care system. They also are home to a very stout high tech industry. And let us not forget about NASA’s Johnson Space Center headquartered in

Texas is also home to more corporate head quarters than all other states. Because of this, Texas would assume all corporate taxes now being taken by the federal government. Corporations and working Americans have been fleeing the high tax liberal blue states like California and New York to Texas for years and the exodus continues today.

Anyone who says that Texas could not make it if they seceded is ignorant of the facts. Texas would do just fine if they seceded. The US would take a major hit and obama would be forced to scale way back on his socialist state plans.

Moreover, Texas democrats are far different than the left wing liberal brand of democrat that you see in san fransisco, vermont or massachusets. As the radical-left-wing of the democrat party continues to push through the socialist agenda you will see Texas blue-dog democrats distance themselves in droves.

  168. jedzep says:

  169. nygenxer says:

    Tim43:

“Texas has very good infrastructure…the Oil and Gas infrastructure links natural gas (LNG) supplies and oil from the gulf to neighboring states. Oh, and the Freeways are also excellent.”

The rights to the oil and gas have been sold to the international oil conglomerates. As for the pipelines themselves: any attempt to take control of those pipelines would be considered an act of war. BTW, that infrastructure you mentioned was paid for by the other 49 states. (Did you know that most of Houston’s office space was built with S&L money. Remember that banking scandal? The one with the other moron, Neil Bush? We’re still paying that off.)

You continue, “They also are home to a very stout high tech industry…And let us not forget about NASA’s Johnson Space Center headquartered in”

Yes, the high tech industry that is part of the military industrial complex of the United States of America. All those companies and all of those employees would be forced to leave Texas. No more Bell Helicopter or any U.S. military bases. Of course, NASA would be gone, as would the US Mint. How would you print your own money, and what would you back up the currency with?

“Texas is also home to more corporate head quarters than all other states.”

Yes, and I think they would have to relocate back to the United States.

“Corporations and working Americans have been fleeing the high tax liberal blue states like California and New York to Texas for years and the exodus continues today.”

So what you’re saying is that all the people fleeing California and New York don’t actually want to live in Texas? It’s just that but they can’t afford to live in California or New York? I agree with you there 100%.

Texas would not make it on its own and it is foolish to suggest otherwise.

This is likely too late to be noticed, but I have to speak as a proud liberal from Texas …

Most of the comments here are well intended but silly. Texas won’t secede, obviously. No Constitutional right exists, either by treaty or other arrangement. The abject hate for this state is pretty embarrassing, though. For those of you who rejoice that liberals might leave the state to embrace a community sympathetic to their political opinions, please grow a spine. Some people prefer to try to change the political climate where they live, even if it is challenging. Tom DeLay was not from my district, but I would no more vote for him than I would for Robert Byrd. Please don’t conform to monolithic ideas about political parties or states.

Texas is still the state of Willie Nelson, Kinky Friedman, and Ann Richards. Wouldn’t any of you enjoy claiming them as political brethren? And that’s not even denting the cultural legacy …

Grow up and stop regurgitating hackneyed ideas about Mexico reclaiming our state. We fought a revolution to claim independence. Respect that struggle, and don’t forget the result.
