CNN anchor ‘commends’ Sanford’s ‘responsible’ decision to partially reject stimulus funding.

Guest-hosting Lou Dobbs’ show last night, CNN’s Kitty Pilgrim asked Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) to explain why he rejected $700 million in stimulus funding “meant for school funding and public safety.” Sanford claimed turning down the money would allow South Carolina to become “more competitive economically going forward.” Rather than challenging any of Sanford’s dubious justifications or noting the fact that the governor is now attempting to pay off the state debt largely created by the disastrous tax cuts he championed, Pilgrim “commended” Sanford for his “responsible position” and said he defended his stance “well”:

SANFORD: [W]hat we looked at was if you spend every dime of this thing, we’re not going to make some reforms that are absolutely essential to South Carolina becoming more competitive going forward. And I could give you a laundry list of other reasons why we laid out the position that we did. [...]

PILGRIM: This is such a hard position to take, such a responsible position to take. … Well, we commend you for the tough position you’ve taken and you defend it well.

Watch it:

Sanford’s decision to partially reject the stimulus funding has put thousands of teacher and other public servant jobs at risk. The “mixed” reaction to Sanford’s decision has resulted in public protests, criticism from the state legislature, a public rebuke from President Obama, and a lawsuit by an 18-year-old high-school student.

“And while we’re at”, continued Pilgrim, “would you like me to polish your balls or suck your ****?”

    GD liberal media!

How can CNN claim to be “the most trusted name in news” and have someone like Lou Dobbs??? Wouldn’t Lou and Kitty fit in better on FIXED News? =P

And when the 18 yr old high school student’s lawsuit spanks him, what will he say?

Weren’t the Sanfords originally from North Carolina? So that would make South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford a bit of a carpetbagger from the North?

  8. upside99 says:

Maybe he and Perry can get together and have both S. Carolina and Texas secede, now that would clean up a lot of the problems we have in this country!! Then they could both get foreign aid from us.

  9. pastcaring says:

Was Sandford tea-bagging Pigrim when she said this?

BTW no grown woman should ever let herself be called kitty on t.v….that’s for private business only…

  10. Lisa FTW says:

Sanford’s as clueless as “good hair” perry, the TX governor who wants to reject millions in stimulus unemployment funds. The way our local paper explained it, in 5 years TX would have to match every $5 of federal funding with $1 in state funding to supply these benefits to the unemployed.

It seems like $5 received for every dollar spent is a good deal to me….makes me wonder why perry doesn’t reject the current federal system in which TX receives more than a dollar for every dollar paid in fed. taxes?

I’m afraid Pilgrim is a numbskull. A taken aback numbskull.

This had to be said again in case the CNN producers missed it the first time.

  13. AlphaLiberal says:

CNN has thoroughly destroyed their own credibility.

  14. AlphaLiberal says:

    I wonder what happened?

She saw the writing on the wall and realized what it takes to get ahead at the right-wing CNN.

    The old CNN is dead.

  15. kdgamergirl says:

Can’t we just send Sanford to Texas when they leave and let the rest of SC have the money?

Frankly, I’m running out of commentary on the wingnut politicians and their brown-nosed “journalists” in the media. It’s just the same old stupid “conservative” drivel on one side and the “please don’t call me a liberal!” drivel on the other.

So much for the Fourth Estate.

  18. backup says:

I understand the political motivation for Sanford to refuse the money. And I understand why South Carolinians could be upset. But, on a national level, why would Americans criticize the Governor of South Carolina for not taking federal money?

If the governor takes less for South Carolina, wouldn’t it relieve some of the federal burden?

probably pointing out the obvious, but:

  21. Scott Schindler says:

Thank you for standing up for wingnuts. It is this type of self-aggrandizement that will really help Democrats win more seats in 2010 and your help is appreciated.

  24. fire _ant_chavis says:

Wow CNN has sunk to an all new low. CNN should merge with Fake News Network. Sanford is such a grandstanding, teabagging turd. Sanford should go to hell and take Perry with him. There’s nothing tough about the cowardly position Sanford is taking Kitty! Kitty, another dumb broad!

  25. Hoodathunktick says:

so, just what is the problem with your post at 18?

  26. Hoodathunktick says:

ok, now it is at 22

  27. barfly says:

Sanford claimed turning down the money would allow South Carolina to become “more competitive economically going forward.”

To all but the most obtuse, it’s clear he means stiffing the unemployed and those on welfare, so that they leave the state and so reduce the state’s overhead.

    backup:

But, on a national level, why would Americans criticize the Governor of South Carolina for not taking federal money?

Because it will mean many of the state’s poor will eventually be forced to leave, thereby fattening the state’s bottom line, and relocate in other nearby states, making THEIR welfare rolls surge as a consequence. I find it hard to believe that a supposedly thoughtful poster would fail to see this, in an instant. Are you really brainwashed? Is that why you missed this easy connection between cause and effect? If so, I’m really astounded, and will have to place you far downscale, as far as intellectual acuity is concerned.

  28. ElBruce says:

I think he was reaching for a different word, like “principled” or something, and it came out “responsible.” Still…

    ladybastet Says:

How can CNN claim to be “the most trusted name in news” and have someone like Lou Dobbs???

The same reason MSNBC has Scarborough: they get tax credits for hiring the developmentally disabled, so they keep a token wingnut on staff.

If the governor takes less for South Carolina, wouldn’t it relieve some of the federal burden?

Well, I don’t think it quite works that way. It kind of messes up the legalities. For one thing, what happens to money they don’t take? Just because they didn’t accept it doesn’t mean it wasn’t allocated, so where does it go? The next question is, what legal right is the governor using to invoke refusal of moneys allocated to specific state programs? Can they do that, or would it need to be handled by the state legislature? Do state governors have the power to override Congress? If so, what are the other legal implications? … and various other serious consequences that never seem to trouble your little wingnut heads.

Frankly, this kind of grandstanding is about as irresponsible as it gets.

  29. kdgamergirl says:

I just think it’s disgusting that he’s refusing money to help fund schools. If he wants to grandstand, fine but this is the wrong thing to do it on. When he’s negatively affecting the lives of people in his state, he needs to go.

Like someone said Lou Dobbs & Kitty Pilgrim would be better suited for FauxNews. But moreover, the likes of Pilgrim & Dobbs hate poor people how the heck you can call something done by a Governor that keeps education out of the reach of the poor kids is just disgusting.Shows what kind of sick b…h Pilgrim is.

  36. notime4lies says:

Kitty is sycophantic tool. If Dobbs says the earth is flat, she nods her head approvingly. How anyone can watch that show is beyond me; at least Rush and Glen are funny; she’s just pathetic.

  37. RealityCheck says:

another great example of the left’s tolerance of opposing viewpoints just splattered all over this thread. I admire Mark Sanford in standing up to the Goose Stepping Storm Troopers of the B.O. administration…in their attempt to write new rules…on States Issues.

B.O. takes the money from the States (taxes)…then gives it back to them with his own set of conditions…thereby bypassing the standard laws of letting each state decide on how to treat their unemployment benefits.

And as far as you liberals jumping all over Fox News nutsacks…it’s only because Fox puts the truth out there and lets people see what you liberals are really up to…and it pisses you off to no end.

You even eat one of you’re own on CNN…if you have a disagreement on their view of a particular issue!

    So funny I LMAO.

  38. pbeeg says:

    Wow, reality.
Your first sentence attacks us for not being tolerant–and your second sentence talks about Goose Stepping Storm Troopers.
    Nice.
